WORSHIP FOCUS

Eternal Life Now

Worship Christ today as the Author of salvation. Through His death and resurrection, we have life eternal.

For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death. But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

RESPOND. NEWSPAPER worship.northlandchurch.net Next week Dr. Hunter will continue his teaching series “Freedom Begins with Christ” as he preaches from John 10:9. He will explain the adjoining world of Heaven and how Christ is the door to walk into a heavenly life.

PREPARE FOR NEXT WEEK’S WORSHIP:

Our Father in heaven, we thank you that you have led us into the

light.

We thank you for sending the

We

Savior to call us from death to life.

confess that we were dead in sin before we heard his call,

but when we heard him, like Lazarus,

we arose.

But, O Father, the grave clothes bind us

still.

Old habits that we cannot throw off, old customs that are so much a part of our lives that we are

helpless to live the new life that Christ calls us to live.

Give us

strength, O Father, to break the bonds;

give us

courage to live a new life in you;

give us

faith to believe that with your help we cannot fail.

All this we ask in the name of the

Savior

who has taught us to come to you. –Worship Sourcebook

Amen.

“The Christian life is the life of sons and daughters; it is not the life of slaves. It is freedom, not bondage. Of course, we are slaves of God, of Christ, and one another (Romans 6:22; 1 Corinthians 7:22, 23; 2 Corinthians 4:5). We belong to God, to Christ, to one another, and we love to serve those to whom we belong. But this kind of service is freedom. What the Christian life is not, is a bondage to the law, as if our salvation hung in the balance and depended on our meticulous and slavish obedience to the letter of the law. As it is, our salvation rests upon the finished work of Christ, on His sin-bearing, curse-bearing death, embraced by faith.” —John Stott, The Message of Galatians

Set Free

to Serve Others More than 300 volunteers are needed January 22. Kids welcome! A few weeks ago, Pastor Joel shared with the staff the theme for this year’s preaching series. As he unfurled his plans for “Freedom Begins With Christ,” his words struck me: “We are set free by Christ for more than ourselves. We are set free so that we have more to give to others!” As I heard those words, I thought about the disciples and their journey with Jesus. They were indeed set free by Christ and were no doubt asked to give of themselves to others. They were asked to trade in the life they knew, not for a life of comfort and ease, but rather a life of absolute sacrifice and service to others. Not only that, but they were asked to do things they had never done before. They didn’t go to school to learn how to become better speakers, teachers, healers or servants. They were just fishermen when Jesus called them, but they were willing to give all of their resources, all of themselves to God, and let Him do the rest. God asks the same of us today. He asks us to give everything we have to Him and let Him do the rest. He wants all of you—your mind, heart, resources ... and time. Yes, even your time. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that after working, caring for family, spending time with friends, running the kids to soccer practice and doing all of the other things that make up our day-to-day lives, there could possibly be any more time in the day for serving. It is also difficult to see how we can have any sort of impact when we feel we may not possess any “special skills or talents” and are uncertain what possibly could be done in just a few hours of serving. However, just like with the disciples, God has already given you everything you need to bring a small part of His Kingdom here to Earth. As I have worked alongside and talked with many Northlanders who are serving, I’ve seen that service is something that everyone can take part in—from highly skilled laborers to people who have never swung a hammer, from single moms with small children to entire families or small groups. It doesn’t matter who you are or what your skills or abilities are; there are opportunities for serving others waiting for you. As we enter into a new year, I want to encourage you to respond to God by taking the freedom He has given you and sharing it with others throughout the year. I want to challenge you to serve others regularly out of the abundance that God has given you! I know that figuring out where, when and how to serve can be a challenge, so we have lined up quarterly Local Serve Days throughout 2011. I’ve also heard many of you say you’re looking for ways to serve with your children, so there will be many opportunities to do so in the new year! Local Serve Days provide you with a practical opportunity to “be the church” in the community. No special skills or talents are required, and everything from tools to professional instruction (when needed) is provided for you.

By Dana Kobosky

Director of Life Services

The next Local Serve Day is Saturday, January 22 from 8 a.m. to noon. The day starts off with a free breakfast, live music, and a chance to meet and mingle with those serving with you. After breakfast, there will be some announcements and a word of prayer, and then you will be distributed in groups to various work sites by 9 a.m. Nearly 300 volunteers are needed, so encourage your family and friends to serve with you! To find out more about projects and to register for Local Serve Day, go to bit.ly/localserveday. Please register online by Wednesday, January 19 at 9 a.m. After that date, registration for Local Serve Day will be closed, so be sure to sign up early. Also, please be sure to sign up each person in your group (even children) individually. I am looking forward to serving with you in the new year. I can’t wait to see what God does both in our community and in our lives as we celebrate the freedom He has given us ... and share it with others!

About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Vision Statement

To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

Mission Statement

To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

What is a “church distributed”? Put simply: It means that church isn’t a building ... it’s people “being the church,” everywhere, every day — responding to God for who He is and what He has done. It also means that, in recognition of how God distributes different gifts among people (1 Corinthians 12:11), we connect with individuals and organizations outside our four walls for long-term support and effectiveness — without blurring distinctions. Pastor Hunter puts it this way: “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish kingdom purposes.” “There are many parts, yet one body,” the Bible says (1 Corinthians 12:20, ESV). Parts of Northland meet as Distributed churches in Central Florida (Longwood, Mount Dora and Oviedo) and online throughout the world for worship, fellowship and to be regularly distributed in service to their local communities.

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

Man

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)
