RESPOND TO GOD: SERVE OTHERS

A message from Dr. Joel C. Hunter
“Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” —Matthew 20:28 (NASB)
serve.northlandchurch.net A NEW resource to help you respond to God by serving others often. • Connect with ministry partners. • Read stories of service. • Learn about the next Local Serve Day. • Find daily ideas and inspiration to help you serve others.
“The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’” —Matthew 25:40 (NASB) Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. —Philippians 2:5-7 (NASB)

God has created me
Therefore I will trust Him.
to do Him some definite service;
Whatever … I am, I can never be thrown away.
He has committed some work to me
If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him;
which He has not committed to another.
in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him;
I have my mission—
if I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. …
He does nothing in vain; … He knows what He is about.
I am a link in a chain,
He may take away my friends,
a bond of connection between persons.
He may throw me among strangers,
He has not created me for naught.
He may make me feel desolate,
I shall do good, I shall do His work;
make my spirits sink,
I shall be an angel of peace,
hide the future from me — still
a preacher of truth in my own place,
He knows what He is about.
while not intending it, if I do but keep His commandments. …

THIS WEEK
– Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890)
WORSHIP FOCUS Worship God for who He is and what He has done. Worship Christ today for His humility. He came to earth, and though He was God, He took on the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. Our attitude should be the same as His. He calls us to respond to Him for the sake of others.
COMING NEXT WEEK RESPOND TO GOD: LIVE GENEROUSLY Next week, Dr. Hunter will be teaching us what it means to live generous lives. God has demonstrated His grace toward us, giving us what we don’t deserve and cannot earn. In this same way, in all areas of our lives — with our time, our energy and our resources — we can demonstrate His grace toward those around us.
Prepare for next week’s worship:

TALK ABOUT IT • When has someone served you in such a way that you saw God’s grace? • What role does serving others play in your life? Is it an add-on, the main thing or something in between? • What are some practical ways that you could serve someone this week — in your home, in your office or at school?

AHeart for
Africa
In June 2004, Barbara Gray lost her daughter, Wendy, to AIDS. This week, she hopes to honor her memory by serving at the World Vision Experience: AIDS, a 2,500-square-foot walk-through exhibit that will transport you to the heart of Africa ... and the life of a child. This weekend and all week long in The Rink, this full-scale replica of an African village gives you the opportunity to see, hear and experience the stories of real children whose lives have been affected by the disease. Barbara recently visited a smaller version of the exhibit in the lobby at Longwood. As she stood staring into the faces of the children pictured there, she saw the face of her daughter. She thought about how at the end of her daughter’s life, Wendy wanted to go to Africa on a Distributed Journey to tell people about Jesus and to educate them about AIDS — but doctors said she wasn’t strong enough to travel. “These children are so beautiful,” Barbara says, fighting back tears. “Wendy would have loved this. ... She wanted to help these kids.” Wendy’s story is a testament to God’s redeeming grace, Barbara adds: “She walked the wrong way for many years, using drugs and living life on her own terms. She was the type of person that whatever direction she was going in, she went 100 miles an hour. So when Jesus turned her life around, she went the other way so fast.” During the final years of her life, Wendy did her best to make up for lost time. She attended Northland faithfully and shared her faith everywhere she went. And while Barbara is heartbroken that Wendy never got to go to Africa, Barbara hopes that serving at the exhibit this week will in some way help to fulfill her daughter’s dream. “She was driven, and when it was used for good, it was great,” Barbara remembers. “I can just see her standing there and talking to people. She would say, ‘Look at these kids. They’re suffering. They need Jesus. And they need us to help them!’ She would be right there in the midst of it.” According to World Vision, three-quarters of all AIDS-related deaths are in Africa — in a place that’s home to just over one-tenth of the world’s population. AIDS endangers a family’s health, a child’s future and a community’s efforts to have a reliable food supply, clean water, education and economic development. As parents get sick and can’t work or grow food, children must leave school to care for their family’s needs. Children who leave school often are forced into livelihoods that put them at greater risk of HIV infection. As orphaned children struggle to survive, they spiral even deeper into poverty.
By 2010, the number of children orphaned by AIDS will be more than 20 million. Among those will be a staggering 10 million in sub-Saharan Africa who have lost both parents. “I feel such sadness for these children,” Barbara says. “When you read about them living without a mom and a dad .... What are they going to do? Who’s going to hug them? There’s nobody there.” About 33 million people globally are living with HIV or AIDS (nearly the population of Canada), and more than 28 million have already died of AIDS. The pandemic is the greatest medical, social and economic challenge the world as a whole now faces — and it will only get worse unless we respond. Barbara concludes, “I hope people don’t look at the exhibit and distance themselves and say, ‘Well, that’s way over there, and I feel bad about it, but what can I do?’ It’s all of our problem, and it’s not just over there; it’s here. I’m praying that people’s hearts will be touched.”
RESPOND. • Pray for the AIDS crisis in Africa.
• Attend or volunteer at the World Vision Experience: AIDS October 30 through November 5.
• Prayerfully consider going on a Distributed Journey to Africa.

About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible
— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)
God
— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)
The Means of Salvation
— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)
Security, Assurance and Responsibility
— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Vision Statement
To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.
Mission Statement
To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.
What is a “Church Distributed”? Put simply: It means that church isn’t a building ... it’s people “being the church,” everywhere, every day — responding to God for who He is and what He has done. It also means that, in recognition of how God distributes different gifts among people (1 Corinthians 12:11), we connect with individuals and organizations outside our four walls for long-term support and effectiveness — without blurring distinctions. Pastor Hunter puts it this way: “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish kingdom purposes.” “There are many parts, yet one body,” the Bible says (1 Corinthians 12:20, ESV). Parts of Northland meet as Distributed churches in Central Florida (Longwood, Mount Dora and Oviedo) and online throughout the world for worship, fellowship and to be regularly distributed in service to their local communities.

¿Habla español?
— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

Man
— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)
Join us for LIVE online worship at
The Christian’s Walk
— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)
The Eternal State
— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)
