LOVE CAME DOWN: The Angelic Activity A MESSAGE FROM DR. JOEL C. HUNTER
Luke 1:11, 26; Luke 2:8-15 (NASB) LUKE 1:11 — And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense. LUKE 1:26 — Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, LUKE 2:8-15 — In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. “This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “ Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.”
Ye holy angels bright, Who wait at God’s right hand, Or through the realms of light Fly at your Lord’s command,
Let us praise our Lord Jesus Christ.
Assist our song;
At Christmas Jesus came as a baby.
For else the theme
Alleluia! Jesus is coming! Alleluia! Jesus is coming!
Too high doth seem
He came to be like us because he loves us.
For mortal tongue.
He came to save us from our sin.
Alleluia! Jesus is coming! Alleluia! Jesus is coming!
Ye blessed souls at rest, Who ran this earthly race, And now, from sin released, Behold the Savior’s face, God’s praises sound,
He died, rose from the dead, and lives in heaven. He will come again because he loves us.
Alleluia! Jesus is coming!
We praise Jesus, who came as a baby and will come again at the end of time.
Alleluia! Jesus is coming! (Worship Sourcebook)
As in his sight, With sweet delight, Ye do abound. Ye saints, who toil below, Adore your heavenly King. And onward as ye go Some joyful anthem sing;
As if to shame the mightiest human efforts and achievements, a child is placed at the center of history. A child, born of humans: a son, given by God.That is the mystery of the world’s redemption. Everything past and everything future is encompassed here. The infinite mercy of almighty God comes to us, condescends to us in the form of a child, his son. That this child has been born for us, that this son has been given, that this human child, this son of God, belongs to me; that I know him, have him, love him, that I am his and he is mine—my very life depends entirely on these things. A child has our life in his hand. –Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Take what he gives And praise him still, Through good or ill, Who ever lives!

Setfree A sneak preview from Pastor Joel C. Hunter on where we’re headed in 2011.
B
eginning in January, I’m going to talk about how Christ sets us free from bondage. There are all kinds of appetites and habits that falsely govern our lives, and it’s time to be set free. One of the reasons that Jesus came, according to Luke 4, was to set the captives free. Our culture has attractions. As a result, a whole lot of us are enslaved to our appetites and our Imaginings—everything from substance abuse, to food, to sexual addiction, to fear ... we go right back to it, we don’t feel normal without it, and DR. JOEL C. HUNTER it preoccupies our day so much that we cannot function as we were meant to function. One of the greatest types of bondage, the most powerful types of captivity in this culture, is debt. Our debt keeps us captive and keeps us from being the generous people that God wants us to be. According to The Wall Street Journal, 70 percent of the population of this country is living from paycheck to paycheck. The average citizen spends $1.26 for every dollar earned—which means most of us are living way beyond our means. The average consumer debt for each household in this country, not including the mortgage, is $38,000. So in our congregation alone, there is likely about $100 million in consumer debt. This is a crazy way to live! We are spending money we don’t have, for things we don’t need, to take on stress we don’t want, to become people we don’t admire, to impress people we don’t really like. There’s a better way. Jesus said, “I came to give you life
and life more abundantly” (John 10:10). The church ought to be the greatest resource to those who are in need. God is calling us not only to be debt-free, but debt-free for giving. Think about it ... if we don’t have to give our money to the bank, we can give it to somebody who really needs it. As part of next year’s series, “The Son Sets Free,” I’m going to challenge all of us to go through Financial Peace University. I’m your pastor, and I want you free! Anything that oppresses you, I hate. And I want you out of bondage. This is not about giving more money to the church. The chief thing about freedom from bondage is that you don’t concentrate on the bondage. Being set free isn’t the ultimate goal—that goal is a maturing relationship with the One who sets us free. We will focus on Christ—what it’s like to walk with
Christ, to abide with Christ. We’ll paint that picture of the life that lives by the “Adjoining Door,” which is Christ Himself (John 10:1-11). As we make our way through this series, we are going to be intentionally inviting a whole bunch of people who are hurting into the church. The church ought to be a safe place where people can be accepted as they are and given hope for who they can become. Once we start talking about this, we’re going to see a whole lot of people set free. My prayer is that in 2011, we not only become free in our own lives, but become conveyors of God’s grace to those who are in bondage. May it be so, Lord.
RESPOND Prayerfully consider how you can be a conveyor of God’s grace to those in need in the coming year.

Christmas Camp Sponsorship Ways to Get Involved Pray—Pray in December for what God will do in the lives of the students at Christmas Camp. Pray for safety as we travel, the counselors as they prepare for camp and build relationships with students there, the worship band as it prepares and leads students in worship, the speaker and the work crew as they serve the students. Fast—Fast and pray for the requests above. Sponsor—Enable a high school student to go to Christmas Camp. Each year more than 100 high school students attend, and God works in their lives in amazing ways. Our theme for camp last year was “Stories.” Both at camp and throughout this year, we have spoken to many students who, for the first time, were willing to give God the pen to write their story. They believe there is no one better to write their story than their Savior, Jesus Christ. Any sponsorship is welcome. Suggestions: • Sponsor one student: $199 • Sponsor five students: $995 • Sponsor 10 students: $1,990 Your generosity will help make it possible for a student to begin or grow in their relationship with Christ. (Make checks payable to Northland Church. Note “Christmas Camp Sponsorship” in the memo line and place it in one of the tithe boxes.) About Northland, A Church Distributed What We Believe The Bible
— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)
God
— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)
The Means of Salvation
— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)
Security, Assurance and Responsibility
— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Vision Statement
To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.
Mission Statement
To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.
What is a “Church Distributed”? Put simply: It means that church isn’t a building ... it’s people “being the church,” everywhere, every day — responding to God for who He is and what He has done. It also means that, in recognition of how God distributes different gifts among people (1 Corinthians 12:11), we connect with individuals and organizations outside our four walls for long-term support and effectiveness — without blurring distinctions. Pastor Hunter puts it this way: “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish kingdom purposes.” “There are many parts, yet one body,” the Bible says (1 Corinthians 12:20, ESV). Parts of Northland meet as Distributed churches in Central Florida (Longwood, Mount Dora and Oviedo) and online throughout the world for worship, fellowship and to be regularly distributed in service to their local communities.

¿Habla español?
— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

Man
— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)
Join us for LIVE online worship at
The Christian’s Walk
— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)
The Eternal State
— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)
