Faces of
NORTHLAND COLLEGE
My coaches and teammates have had my back since the day told them I wanted to join their family. The staff and faculty have been so welcoming and eager to answer my questions. You truly get the sense of community once you step on campus.

I chose Northland because of how close it is to both the national forest and Lake Superior. It’s also one of the very few four-year schools in Wisconsin to offer forestry as a degree. Being able to complete my education, while also continuing to play the sport I love at a competitive level, is what I like most about being here.

Making new friends was my biggest concern because I came from a very small community where we all knew each other. My outdoor orientation trip was what allowed me to meet new people right away and bond with them. I’m still good friends with almost everyone who was on my trip.

My favorite academic experiences came within the first few weeks of arriving at Northland. During my geology class, we took a field trip to Copper Falls (which was beautiful!), and our professor made muffins for us. It made me laugh. Like what kind of professor makes muffins for his students? An awesome one.

I haven’t had a professor that hasn’t inspired me, and I have been here for three years now. Across all subjects, they are all extremely passionate about what they do, which just makes it easier for me as a student to dive into the subject.

Being a big city kid, it was a hard transition to come to a town with 8,000 people and a school with 600 kids. It’s a huge difference. Being outdoors in the Cities is one thing—walking from home to the mall or walking to the gym. At Northland, being outdoors is completely different. I’ve actually experienced my first hiking trip, and I went fishing for the first time. Ashland has changed me for the better. Danon Briggs

There’s so much to do in the area. And because it’s a small school, you are able to be involved with so many things. You can just as easily be a member of the sailing club as environmental council. And because it’s such a tightknit campus, you always feel comfortable going to anything.

My favorite classes have been ones where we discuss global issues. Northland helps students form many connections to inequalities that persist worldwide. Global Inequalities and Sociology and Social Justice have been really life-changing.

My friends and I regularly enjoy the use of the rock climbing wall in the campus fitness center. We attend events, talks, and films on campus. Also, just chilling out and socializing in our dorms or apartments is definitely the usual. Lots of movies, games, food, art, and whatever we are feeling at the moment.

Northland has a unique environment that allows for students to get a lot of experiences that you wouldn’t get anywhere else. I really enjoy that I can do hands-on research. I can get one-on-one time with professors when I have questions. There are so many caring people around Northland.

I feel welcomed by other freshman, upperclassmen, professors, faculty, and staff on campus. A couple weeks ago, I got to ride my bike with twenty or so others in the annual Midnight Ramble. I can’t wait to further explore the abundance of opportunities here!
