NORTH LANDS CREATIVE

North Lands Creative is an international centre dedicated to the study and development of glass as an art form and fosters a strong community among the participating artists and audiences. The charity offers both self-motivated and structured opportunities for artists requiring often massive and complex facilities for their work, and looking to further engage with their fellow peers. As a national charity North Lands Creative encourages an appreciation and understanding of contemporary glass. With the help of our supporters we raise funds to provide opportunity for artistic innovation and potential. As a not for profit our income goes directly in to helping build a stronger glass community which benefits many artists and crafts makers globally. We are proud to celebrate the outstanding British and international creativity in glass. All the artists at Collect have a connection to North Lands Alastair Pilkington Studio, and the work has been inspired by their immersive time on the artist-in-residence program or as a collaborative process on our associate artist projects. North Lands Creative is distinguished for its expertise in the field of contemporary glass. For more than 24 years our organisation has represented distinguished master crafts people and artists selling to private collectors and museums alongside facilitating private commissions.

collect 2020 origin stories

In 2020 the gallery will represent the work of Martin Janecký (Czech), Emma Baker (UK), Laura Quinn (Ireland), Alberto Lago (Italy), Alexandra Mureșan (Romania) and James Maskrey (UK). The history of glass is full of ‘origin stories’: stories of how and where glass began. North Lands Creative at Collect 2020 takes this as a starting-pointing for the six artists exhibiting, each exploring a fundamental component of contemporary glass blowing. The Future of Making – Tradition to Liberation and how the artists have each broken the mould by creating ground-breaking work which sees traditional techniques evolving. How does the glass community start to create a new language and support the freedom of artists, makers and curators to break the conventions around tradition. Guiding the creative process for glass blowing, North Lands Creative uses the studio and gallery as a freespace for people to gather and exchange, with new networks emerging, new possibilities taking shape and achieve a global dialogue that can weave through gender, social politics and sustainability. The exhibition will be playful, witty and provocative, Origins asks us to look again at the myths, conventions and histories that guide how glass is created and experienced.

NORTH LANDS CREATIVE

Martin Janecký, began working with glass at the age of thirteen at his father’s factory in the Czech Republic. After graduating from the Glass School in Nový Bor he gained experiences in South Africa, Sweden, the Netherlands, and chiefly in the US, where he studied at the Pilchuck Glass School under Richard Royal and William Morris. It wasn’t long before Martin Janecký himself became a highly sought teacher in his field. He has been a visiting artist and instructor at various glass programs all over the world, such as The Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass, Pilchuck Glass School, Penland School of Craft, University of Toyama. Among his most recognized strengths is an ability to master the glass moulding technology of so-called blowing and sculpting “inside the bubble”, a technique used to create startling original works. Martin Janecky is considered to be one of the best glass sculptors working today. He has exhibited his artwork in galleries and museums all over the world.

James Maskrey started working with glass in 1990. He originally trained as an apprentice and subsequently worked for 7 years at a hot glass studio in Dorset. In 1997 he embarked on a three dimensional design degree in glass at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, Surrey. After graduating in 2000 he was appointed as Artist in Residence at the University. In 2001 James joined the Glass and Ceramics department at The University of Sunderland and in 2002 he started his Masters in glass at the University, graduating in 2004. James continues to work for the University. He has exhibited his work in the UK, Europe, The USA and China. His work is held in many public and private collections including The Crafts Council and the Victoria and Albert Museum. “I use predominantly hot glass to create factual and imagined objects that often take the form of individual pieces or collections of curiosities. Inspiration comes from many sources. Personal experiences, peculiar facts, elaborate hoaxes and voyages of discovery, all help to inform whilst a passion for both traditional craft skills and innovative new technologies plays an important part in the execution of the work. James Maskrey.

alberto lago alberto lago

Alberto Lago is a designer and artist based in Venice. Starting from designing skyscrapers to working with craftsman his creative process is based on understanding the human and social impact on the surroundings through community interaction. His background range from architecture, engineering, carpentry, illustration and design. Alberto creative process is based on traditional craftsmanship in relation with natural materials (ceramic, fabric, glass, marble, metal, and wood). The starting point is having a direct interaction with skilled artisans to understand their techniques, passions and dreams. These knowledges are then used in symbiosis with digital technologies to inform the design process in a unique manner. In 2018, he took part of the Venice Architecture Biennale for the Scottish exhibition, as an artist and coordinator, where he collaborated to explore the theme of free space through bringing to Venice not another exhibition but a resource for Venetians and anyone coming into the space. Currently, he is Art Director and designer of Salviati a 160 years-old Murano glass

“Origin means understanding the base behind the tradition and the history of glass. In Murano this is quite obvious given the millenary glass culture. Indeed, in Murano many things have not been changed and all traditional techniques are still alive. However, even in Lybster traditions have a strong bases since almost 60 years Murano glass masters came in this remote part of northern Scotland to teach how to make glass. This strong correlation is nowadays still alive through a more direct connection that resemble the elements of the project in a link that start from the past to reach the future of glass network in Europe and all around the world.

combining the traditional production with a research department where people and ideas grow. Salviati, Venice, Est 1859

Salviati’s production is divided into artistic glass, tableware, lighting and a special interiors section open to designers using glass and its in nite shapes for bespoke solutions.

In 1859 a lawyer from Vicenza, Antonio Salviati, began his successful glass business, founding the Salviati & C. which combined the production of mosaics, enamels and blown glass, becoming an international reference point soon. Salviati was a tireless researcher: his furnace production ranged between very re ned “lattimi”, ligree with very complex weaves and opalescent glasses embellished with oral decorations and aventurine threads. The manufacturing accuracy and precision, highly recommended by Salviati in some correspondence of that time, can be found throughout all the production of its furnace whose regulation required the mandatory attendance of the internal drawing school.

salviati & Abate Zanetti

Today Salviati is a company that every day respects and celebrates the thousand-year- old Murano tradition

Abate Zanetti Venice, Est 1862 The School of Glass Abate Zanetti of Murano is the heir of an ancient Glass institution, the Drawing School for Glass Makers, founded back in the year 1862 by the abbot Vincenzo Zanetti. The School of Glass remains today more than ever the meeting place between the past and future of the art of glass with the purpose to join the multiple realities of the contemporary glass panorama, looking at the world of design, culture, art. In this way, research and experimentation combine with the custody of a thousand year’ of tradition and technical skill typical of the Island of Murano. The headquarters are in Murano, in an industrial architecture building of the 30s situated at the heart of the island, transformed for the current purposes thanks to an operation of architectural restoration. The building has got wide spaces used as laboratories, classrooms, conference room, library with Wi-Fiworkstation, coffee bar. Direct docking on the lagoon. The structure is equipped for all the typical Murano glass works: furnace, lampworking, glass fusing and grinding. There is a spacious outdoor garden with thepossibility to fitting up to 200 seats.
