GLASS, MEET THE FUTURE FILM FESTIVAL 2021 Glass, Meet the Future Film Festival is dedicated to presenting a selection of new films pivoting around the medium of glass. The festival showcases a cross section of international diverse and engaging series of short films curated and directed by female identified and non-binary filmmakers using glass as the predominant feature. GMTF is a microcosm to explore the human relationship with glass and film, exploring dynamics with the physical and environmental context, together with the human and social context. The amalgamation of material and ephemeral, glass and video, are at the heart of the film festival. Exploring the stories of how art is made, how artists survive, how they think and work, and what makes creativity our most important skill.

Glass into the mould, light into the camera, body into space.
Assimilate! is a movie performance, filmed at night within an 8-meter high, haphazardly constructed crystal-palace. A protagonist clothed in wearable structures of sheet glass and mirrors, almost indiscernible from the surrounding installation, is moving about it, - partially assimilating to the point of near dissolution, then again breaking free, scaling, tearing, breaking, all in dance-like motions.
Rooted in research and experiences gathered whilst on residency at North Lands Creative in 2019, this film features a poetic imagining of the hollow space of the Grey Cairns of Camster as both a camera and mould. A digital artists book will accompany the work.
GMTF21 COMMISSION WORKS
26.03.21 I USED TO BE, Juli Bolaños-Durman
29.03.21 Woven Light, Madeline Rile Smith
This work will explore how the visceral bond between the maker, community and material permeates the creative process, guiding it to become something raw and precious at the same time. Exploring human curiosity and the instinctual need to play and create. The act of making connects us to an unlimited source of joy, comfort and elevation.
This performance-based work will highlight communal acts of creation and collective action involving hot glass and textile-inspired processes. This unspoken film will document a story of social currency, communal effort, and interpersonal connection in the glass studio. Directed by Madeline Rile Smith. Film by Trish Pickelhaupt.

GLASS, MEET THE FUTURE 2021 COMMISSION WORKS
01.04.21 What do you hear when you think about the future? Griet Beyaert
04.04.21 Lost to me, Alison Lowry & Jayne Cherry
A ‘Remote Glass Sound Workshop’ will explore the question ‘what do you hear when you think about the future? This will later be realised as a short film and glass sound piece using the collaborative soundbite submissions of participants.
This commissioned work will reflect on the numerous State and religious run institutions that operated in Ireland from 18th to the late 20th centuries, incarcerating mothers and their children. This collaborative site responsive work will be a visceral experience, using a glasswork as the investment object to provide a cognitive dissonance for the viewer.

#StayCreative with Juli: Mobile from Found Objects and Recycle Waste Juli Bolaños-Durman This workshop invites us to connect to that constant curiosity questioning where things come from, what is our impact on this planet and how everything is connected. By fostering this childlike curiosity, we allow ourselves to regenerate from a sacred space of joy. Delve into a magical world of second chances, where waste material is the starting point and curiosity is the guide. We will create raw pieces that are put together intuitively through the joyfulness of play, exploring how discarded materials can be transformed and elevated. This visceral bond between the maker/material permeates the creative process, guiding it to become something raw and authentic. The mobile will honour the instinctual need to create something of beauty with our hands, how this act of making connects us to our humanity and the power of community to get through these uncertain times. free pre-recorded activity | suitable for all ages share your creations with us at info@northlandscreative.co.uk or on social media using hashtag #gmtfmobile
GMTF 2021 CREATIVE ACTIVITIES Camera Obscura Workshop with Flora Flora deBechi In a time when so many of us have been stuck inside looking at the same view, this workshop is an opportunity for people to turn that view (literally!) upside down, bringing it’ s projected image inside to rediscover what we see and frequently take for granted. Your window becomes the lens and your room becomes a version of a camera. This workshop will bring together audiences to create a camera obscura in their homes using everyday available materials. The discovery of the camera obscura was a magical experience for Flora as child, and one which set her off on the path to photography and the subsequent investigation into the nature of light and how we see and understand its effect on our concept of our world.
