FROM OUR EDITOR Every year, around this time, I have an overwhelming desire to grow my own patch of greenery. And every year, I fail. When I lived in an apartment, I tried to create a private green space for myself, grown in pots on the deck -- an oasis in the concrete jungle. I bought a couple dozen small pots to create a fragrant herb garden. I planted oregano, basil, chives, parsley and mint. Those plants seemed too small so I graduated to lettuce and tomatoes. I had visions of greenery creeping up the deck rails, offering me complete privacy from the street below. And then I watched those plants grow – to about 4 inches tall. It was hardly worth getting my hands dirty. Gardening articles and television shows promised it was easy, but I am yet to understand what I went wrong. I watered, I fertilized, I talked to them and they hated me and died. My green thumb doesn’t fare any better inside the house. While my friends boast about the size of their African violets and various ivies, my one and only indoor plant – a shamrock – is always on its death bed, in constant need of reviving and reassurance – barely hanging on. Since it is abundantly clear that a garden cannot survive under my supervision, we purchased green space in the country, where deciduous trees like birch, alder and maple thrive, and should be unaffected by my gardening skills or lack thereof. Wild raspberries, blackberries, Oregon grape, innumerable ground covers and !"##$#%&'(')*+(,&-(*$&)*.&/0&+0$$#&)11&'0"2&"*&"30&/4$&),0$&-1"+5&&67$&3*.$0803#7&(#& thick enough to hide the farm house below from sight. At least, that was the case when we moved here two and a half years ago. Today, I can see the corner of that house, just barely, but the writing is on the shed. In two and a half years I have already managed to scare the natural ecosystem half to death. The plants have discovered that a brown thumb lives in the house at the top of the hill and they are running for their lives. It started with the pine beetle. They’ve been munching on a couple of those lovely majestic ponderosa pine trees. So, we were forced to cut down, buck up, and wrap +7$&1"'#&(*&7$)49&-1)#+(,5&&:"+&+"&-)*(,;&(*&)&#(*'1$&#$)#"*&+7$&3*.$0803#7&/11$.&(*& where the pine trees had been. <--)0$*+19%&+7)+=#&*"+&*$,$##)0(19&)&'"".&+7(*'5&&>(4(*'&"3+&7$0$%&+7$&/0$&0(#?&2$('7#& high and we have a responsibility to properly manage the vegetation on our land. Despite my love of shrubbery, I have to consider ways to clear the brush and reduce ladder fuels. Hence - the goats. WITH THE WIND IN YOUR FACE Story & Photos by Dawn Renaud OUR SECONDARY HIGHWAYS and rural roads take us through some of the most scenic countryside in the world. One of the best ways to experience it is from the back of a motorcycle. Perched behind a competent rider with the wind in your face and nothing but leather between you and +7$&#,$*$09%&(+=#&+7$&*$)0$#+&+7(*'&+"&K9(*'5&L"3*.&+""&0(#?9M& Like anything involving calculated risk, that’s part of the exhilaration. Come along for a ride.

Leaning through twists and turns, you’re still climbing. The engine between your knees changes pitch with each shift "B&+7$&'$)0#;&*"2&+7$&#"3*.&(#&)!-1(/$.%&$,7"(*'&8),?&B0"!& the rock face to the left and from the cement barrier lining the right edge of the road. Then the sound from the right falls away. Here there is no barrier—just a sheer drop to the lake, far below. Your view is broken only by the occasional ponderosa tall enough to rise above the road’s edge.

We’re heading north on Westside Road. Look down to your right. Inches from the sole of your boot, the asphalt is a blur. Sway with the rider as the bike leans through corner after corner. you’ve travelled together, the rider has become accustomed to your signal for him to slow down—the sudden tightening of your knees and the tap of your hand against his thigh, right or left depending on where you’ve spotted risk—and before you say “deer” he’s already reacting. The more challenging the road, the more focused the rider must be. This is the true bliss of the motorcycle: multitasking simply isn’t an option. Even conversation becomes limited as you focus along with him; Westside Road always requires a rider’s full attention. On a bad day, there’s heavy +0)B/,P#1"2Q!"4(*'&4$7(,1$#&)7$).%&+)(1')+$0#&8$7(*.P and there is always loose gravel sprayed onto the pavement at driveways and where other vehicles have cut the insides of corners. The rider’s gear had fared better, but the leather was completely gone from the toe of his boot; the protective shield gleamed white and raw. You still shudder to think what the pavement would have done to feet encased only in tennis shoes—or to bare skin. A sudden blast of cold air. You’re alongside a creek, and it’s running full-speed with the melt. A few more tight corners, then the road descends, gradually straightening. ENDERBY ARTS FESTIVAL by Alyson Witts

Enderby will be the fun place to be on Saturday, July 23, a day of markets, music, magic and arts. The 2011 Enderby Arts Festival runs from 9 am to 4 pm downtown, and the organizers ~ volunteers from the Enderby & District Arts Council ~ are promising an unusual collection of free entertainments. Near the top of the list is the Raiden Taiko Japanese drumming group from Kamloops, scheduled to perform in Cliff Avenue at 1.30, 2.30 and 3.30 pm If you were lucky enough to see them in action at Vernon Performing Arts Centre early 2010 you will know this is a rare opportunity to hear extraordinary music.

RAILWAY TALES THE BRAVEST BRAKEMAN By Jack Godwin MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE that on April 29th, 1903 the town of Frank Alberta was covered by a massive rockslide and that the only survivor was a baby girl who was subsequently named “Frankie Slide”. In fact, while the disaster killed 86 people and many outbuildings were covered, Frank itself was spared and little Frankie’s story is a myth. Local natives referred to Turtle Mountain as “the mountain that moves” and they refused to camp under its shadow. However, it contained rich deposits of coal and by 1901 the bustling mining town of Frank was well established. On the night of the slide a freight train had just loaded up with coal and was ordered on to a siding (“waiting in the hole” in train slang) so that a passenger train that had been held up by a blizzard could speed through Frank and make up valuable time. That was the plan until--at 4:10 am--90 million tons of rock broke loose from the peak and thundered into the valley below. Ahead of the deadly rock fall, a hurricane-force wind raced across the valley, toppling houses, shacks and tents. Those asleep had no time to waken, and those awake never knew what hit them. One man who did not lose his wits during this crisis was brakeman Sid Choquette aboard the coal train waiting in the siding. As he gazed in horror at the mass of rock covering the C.P.R.’s track Choquette realized that another disaster was looming as the highballing passenger train raced toward Frank. With rock still falling and people screaming in anguish, the brakeman grabbed his lantern and 8$')*&,0)21(*'&),0"##&+7$&.$80(#&(*&"0.$0&+"&K)'&."2*&+7$& oncoming train. One experiment suggests that men (but not women!) literally enjoy seeing bad people suffer. When subjects observed a person experiencing physical pain, the male’s brain’s pleasure centers lit up if he thought it was well-deserved. Other studies suggest that schadenfreude is correlated with envy, and, perhaps most tellingly, low self-esteem.

The confident, relaxed demeanor of all who live here attests to a clear sense of development long ago accomplished. In a tangible, knowable human sense, Lviv is filled with substance and vitality. Freedom Square is the showcase centre of town, a half kilometre long stretch of trees, grass, and concrete with a boulevard lane to each side for restricted traffic. At the head is the majestic, Opera House, four tiers of culture crafted in immaculate grandeur more than a century ago. Then comes a fountain throwing finely sprayed water into the air along with the outstretched arms of the young people laughing for photos in front of this landmark. Next, an open bare stretch where parents rent plastic, remote control cars for their toddlers to sit in and drive, believing it is their hands doing the steering. The square narrows then to a long walk with a row of benches at each side facing to the middle. Finally, the stately monument to Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s great poet and thinker of the early 1800’s. Everywhere, people stroll, talk, sit, and play. The few pigeons and their droppings and the occasional, but more unsightly, organic remnants of walked dogs don’t deter young lovers at their lawn picnics. And the benches especially call forth the chess players. Often, older men. Like the pair I watched, rapt in focus at their game, a mechanical timer at the side as official stamp of seriousness. The younger of the two in a suit sitting upright and glaring at the board while his adversary pondered his move. That one, dishevelled, slouching forward, long curl of ash about to crumple from the cigarette in his fingers, his mind scanning the precise next step to gain advantage, that one leaning in such intensity is the game itself. Then his move, and “SMACK!” the timer plunger is whacked down. The suit, more quickly, flashes his own move and “SMACK!” the timer returns it to the slouching man.

STAYCATIONS

50° 42’ N

A staycation is a bit like being a tourist in your own town. Instead of travelling afar for a vacation, you stay home and relax, taking day trips close to home. Living in the Thompson Okanagan is a bonus for staycationers, considering all there is to do here. Plan your staycation just like you would a regular vacation. Set a time and date for your ‘departure’. Buy a local guidebook. Go on a winery tour. Spend a day at the beach. Have dinner out. Visit a museum or art gallery. Check out one of the world class ski hills in the Thompson Okanagan. Experience live theatre. Attend a musical festival or sports event. Find a new hiking trail. The trick to enjoying a staycation is to make sure you do what you would do if you were on vacation: relax and explore!

A DAY IN SALMON ARM ... EXTREME! Story & Photos by Jim Couper

WHO WOULD EXPECT the little town of Salmon Arm e-"-31)+("*&hk%]]]f&+"&8$&)&-1),$&"B&$X+0$!$#M&67$&*)!$& itself is extreme. Along with Moose Jaw and Medicine Hat, Salmon Arm oft gets cited among oddest names in the west. 67$&+"2*=#&)--$11)+("*&,"!$#&B0"!&(+#&1",)+("*&"*&+7$&K"".& plain of the Salmon River at the southern arm of Shuswap Lake (another odd name). Salmon Arm has shallow marshy land in abundance and the western grebe, a large water-bird from the coast, dives right in. Part of its mating ritual calls for an arm-in-arm (or wing-in-wing) scoot across the surface of the water. Nevertheless a stroll to the end is pure pleasure. My day in Salmon Arm involved another extreme: Larch Hills Winery. Here the claim is highest elevation winery in North America (at 2,300 feet), and most northerly grape winery. Alas, the proprietor could not declare who resided in second place. The winery comes at the end of some scenic,

winding lanes and even if you don’t tip the bottle the scenery makes the short drive worthwhile. The next extreme challenges the imagination: a lawnmower 18 feet high and 11 feet wide that weighs 4158 lbs. (pictured on page 28). The creation of Herb Higginbottom, proprietor of the Tool Museum, sits in front of his place in Deep Creek on the outskirts of Salmon Arm. “Surely it’s the biggest lawnmower on Planet Earth,” I state. lJ"2&!)*9&,)*&+7$0$&8$Mm&J$08&2(11&)'0$$&+"&*"&,1)(!&3*+(1& +7$&G3(**$##&0$,"0.&?$$-$0#&-0"4(.$&4$0(/,)+("*5&67$&\`&B$$& to tour his museum stands as the best bargain in the land excepting free things. A DAY IN ANTIGUA, GUATEMALA northof50.com 29

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY. Our group of ten chanted that ditty, whilst the driver of our rented passenger van weaved through and around fallen trees and debris, the result of mudslides that had washed out large sections of the road from Puerto Quetzal to Antigua. Heavy rains have been pummeling this area for several weeks and news sources report more than 30 separate landslides have cut across the Inter-American Highway, one of Guatemala’s main roads. And it’s still raining. The very fact that we are here, on this road, is a minor miracle. There had been some question about whether or not our cruise ship – Holland America’s Ryndam – hampered by high winds, would be able to enter +7$&7)08"305&&F3+&2(+7&#"!$&#?(11B31&!)*$34$0(*'#&)*.&)& lucky break in the weather, Captain Mark Rowden was able to dock. All the passengers are duly impressed; this display of expertise validates that Captain Rowden, who demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for pizza making in the ship’s Culinary Arts Centre the day before, truly deserves the fan base he has accumulated on the ship.

Miguel, our tour guide, is also gaining fans. He talks a mile a minute like the Sham-wow pitchman on TV. Some passengers fret about the state of the roads, but Miguel offers assurances: No no no not to worry not to worry. A couple of passengers groan, imagining Cousin Eduardo’s factory in positively negative terms. There is no doubt you take your chances when you book private tours, not through the ship. The cruise ship we’d sailed in on guarantees its tours – and if your bus is delayed for any reason (say, a mudslide) the ship will wait for you. It won’t wait for us rebels. As soon as we are inside, I am whisked away to a backroom where two women dress me in traditional Guatemalan garb, and then parade me in front of my fellow passengers while Miguel explains what I am wearing. In Guatemala, he says, indigenous women produce traditional fabrics in over 350 different designs and a huge variety of colors. Each design is unique to its village of origin and has a ceremonial symbolism inherited from Mayan ancestors. We spend about a half hour at Cousin Eduardo’s before continuing on to Antigua, known for its stunning monasteries, colonial architecture and cobblestone streets. Miguel tells us that Antigua is nestled between three volcanoes; the last major eruption occurred in 1972. Our group is to meet at the hired van by 2 o’clock to ensure we make it back to the ship before it sails at 4 pm. Conversation revolves around the weather and the morning’s iffy trip into the harbour, as well as speculation about whether we will leave Guatemala tonight. And then, we hear the thrusters pushing us away from the pier, and we make a lumpy exit from the harbour.

Poison ivy, oak and sumac are plants that contain an oil that may cause a rash on many people’s skin. Urushiol, the irritant oil in these plants, need only be present in a billionth of a gram to cause a rash. It is the most common allergy -- affecting half of the population, according to the Poison Ivy, Oak & Sumac Information Center. Here are some other things to know about these poisonous plants.

played well. I have friends who puttered nervously around their homes, loading dishwashers or planting herb gardens or folding laundry, averting their eyes from the TV screen (but certainly listening intently). They were, of course, just being complete cowards, but they had convinced themselves that if they watched the game, the result would be disastrous. I have a friend who knew that the Canucks only had a chance of winning a game if he did not sit down. He had to stand up during each and every game, for the entire three hours. This man had to go to Finland on a business trip during the third round, and in a stunning display of deluded superstitious conviction, stood up in his hotel room at 3 a.m. local time, watching the game. Genuine wisdom would induce our political and business leaders to stop plundering and poisoning the planet and concentrate their efforts instead on repairing the ecosphere they have so terribly mutilated. It’s late for such a transformation from self-destruction to sustainability, but perhaps not yet too late. Our 81)+)*+&B)3X&-)#&7)#&8$$*&+7$&'1"0(/,)+("*&"B&'0$$.&)*.& power that runs rampant through what we pathetically call our civilization. A few billionaires have belatedly decided to “donate” as much as half the wealth they have accrued from “free enterprise” to philanthropic efforts. It would be more appropriate for them to dispense their philanthropy according to the tenets of justice. A central problem is an ancient one that began with recognition of the need for the separation of church and state. Religious convictions, it was recognized, should not interfere with or hobble a judicious and caring management of state. Unfortunately, an economic “religion” based on deifying greed and power was instead embraced by our political and business leaders. It is called “Corporatism.” Its god is lC0"/+m&)*.&(+#&-0(!$&,"!!)*.!$*+&(#&+"&$1$4)+$&)4)0(,$& as the highest economic virtue. It makes saints and heroes of those who accumulate the most wealth. It wages wars, causes famines, impoverishes billions, contaminates our air and water. It has already driven many of our fellow creatures into extinction, and now herds our own species toward the same fate. Today’s “economy” is thus a perversion of what an economy should be, and so planetary destruction is well under way. Profound change in the prevailing self-destructive worldview is clearly needed if we wish to have some continuance of life on Earth. How could this be

),,"!-1(#7$.M There are two basic approaches to life. One is called materialism, the other idealism. Movement from materialism to idealism has been recognized as evolution toward spiritual growth. The famous philosopher Immanuel Kant coined the term “transcendentalism” to describe this growth in human perception. Various creeds and philosophies, through the ages, have suggested that an individual may embrace divinity by surrendering to an association with nature, to the entity which provides for personal existence, sustains it throughout this life, and possibly through many lives. Those who believe in things of a higher nature than materialism and wealth have inherited the formidable task of somehow reversing the perilous ethical stagnancy that now prevails. Whether or not it appears clearly, a dream of social decency is building as a reaction against the destructive belief in the accumulation of wealth as the supreme goal of human life. Many now see the chaos and enormous harm that proceeds from what we have called progress. They now realize that renewal on a global scale is urgent and essential. It remains to be seen, however, if this dawning awareness will spread as fast and effectively as the magnitude of our present plight demands. HEALTH MATTERS Sun safety guidelines get an update For years doctors and safety experts have preached the importance of being smart about sun exposure. Considering skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Canada and the U.S., according to statistics published by the leading cancer organizations in both countries, many people have long heeded the warnings. Although many of the precautions remain the same, this season individuals may want to pay attention to some of the newer information about sun safety. UV Rays and the Ozone Layer The sun is responsible for life on the planet as we know it. Without sunlight, plants would fail to thrive and there would not be adequate warmth to heat up the planet. Still, the sun is a double-edged sword. The warming rays responsible for life can also be detrimental. A primary component of sun rays -- ultraviolet rays -- can cause skin and eye damage. UV rays come in three types: 1. UVA: These rays cause skin aging and wrinkling and contribute to skin cancer, such as melanoma. They are the most common UV rays to reach people. W5&^RFj&67$#$&0)9#&)0$&)1#"&.)!)'(*'%&83+&+7$&"D"*$&1)9$0& blocks much of them from passing through. Some do make it through and can be harmful. 3. UVC: These rays might be lesser known to the general public, but they are the most harmful. These rays are blocked by the ozone layer in the atmosphere and don’t reach the earth. <1+7"3'7&+7$&"D"*$&1)9$0&/1+$0#&!3,7&"B&+7$&7)0!B31& ultraviolet radiation, the thinning of the ozone layer due to greenhouse gases and other effects of human life poses a problem. Some portions of the ozone layer are depleting. Contrary to what some people may think, thinning of the ozone layer is more pronounced at the poles of the earth rather than in the equator region. There is a large area of thinning over Antarctica, which some scientists believe correlates to a weather phenomenon called a “polar vortex.” This is when air is blown around the planet and atmosphere and is isolated over Antarctica during the winter. This air contains global pollutants, which break down the ozone layer. 38 northof50.com

Guidelines for being safe when out in the sun are evolving. Changes to Sun Protection Guidelines Although very thin patches in the ozone layer are sparsely located at the poles, the overall concentration of ozone (*&+7$&#+0)+"#-7$0$&K3,+3)+$#5&67(**(*'&0$#31+(*'&B0"!& ,71"0"K3"0",)08"*#%&"0&ETE#%&)*.&*(+0"'$*&"X(.$#&(*&+7$& air has compromised the ozone to the point that greater precautions may be necessary to protect the body from UV rays.
