Baptism by fire is an understatement for the type of season the North Park football team endured in the 2014 campaign. But with so many weapons returning from last year’s squad – in addition to many new faces – the Vikings could possibly be the youngest team with the most experience in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in 2015. “That is what we have to do as a program – develop players,” third-year head coach Mike Conway said. “Sometimes you have to throw them to the fire sooner than you want but they come out stronger because of it.” Although the Vikings ended the year with a 2-8 overall record, they finished tied for fifth in the CCIW while earning five conference victories over a twoyear period – the most since the 1979-80 seasons. What’s more is they boasted six All-CCIW players, the most for a North Park squad in the last 14 seasons. “You cannot get any better if you are not c h a l l e n g e d ,” Conway said. “So that’s what we are going to continue to do - challenge our program, challenge our kids and challenge ourselves as coaches.” A host of true freshmen and first-year players cut their teeth against top competition last season due to various injuries to veteran players but with that key experience it just may be what the squad needs to take that next step. “Our program is built on team principles,” Conway said. “We have a lot of defensive and offensive players who have developed over the last two years, which we are very excited about. They have developed to the point where they are ready to contribute in a big way which is exciting for the future of our program.” One of those first-year players – Devin Childress, a Second Team All-CCIW wide receiver who tied the NPU single season record for touchdown receptions (14) and led the team and the conference with 59 receptions – returns for his sophomore year among a receiving corp with numerous weapons. “With 2013 All-CCIW receiver, Dakota (Conway) returning and the emergence of Anthony Burton as well as the young talent in Jordan Turner, Delano Braxton, Cody Hood, Dylan Delgado and Mark
Ojomu, we should have some depth that we have been lacking in recent years,” Conway said. “We have enough talent at this position to where we can pose a legitimate threat to our opponents in the passing game. This offense is built on balance and throwing the ball to different receivers, which is something we are going to utilize at every opportunity.” While the receiving corps is built for speed and agility the Vikings downhill running game will get a shot in the arm with the return of senior, Filo Langkilde and John Wilkinson who will be accompanied by an infusion of some exciting newcomers. “Our running game was something we wanted to address this year because we put a lot of pressure on our quarterback and our receivers in the past,” Conway said. “This year it is going to be different - our offensive line will return intact, and our quarterback has developed to be able to make better decisions on the field and put us in the right plays. Five players, three of which were freshmen last season, return to the offensive line anchored by seniors Matt Davis and Epafara Moananu. “Those guys have a year under their belt,” he said. “They did an excellent job of learning and staying with it. We feel better that we have some continuity with five returning starters.” It is just the element needed for junior quarterback T.D. Conway – who led the conference with 2,649 yards passing and 26 touchdowns all while breaking the NPU single-season records for pass completions, attempts, passing yards and touchdowns – to continue his progress as the offensive signal caller. “As long as we can keep T.D. upright and keep him healthy, we are going to have a well-balanced attack,” the coach said. “T.D.’s in a good place moving into his third year as the starter. Being a two-time all-conference player, we still think he has yet to reach his potential.” Neither has the overall core of the team. We will need to continue to build on the foundation that has been laid the last two seasons. “We have built this program on sound principles of discipline, accountability and commitment,” Conway said. “We have endured some difficulties this past season, but those struggles have only served to make us stronger.” Defensively, Conway thinks there is room for

improvement and is in the process of finding the right combinations in developing a new standard of defense.” “We have put in a lot of hard work, and I feel good about the system we have in place,” he said. “The linebacker position brings back four starters with Brendon Dull, Joe Butz, Chaun Maiava and Wilson Ray. At defensive line the returners are Hunter Corrigan, Austin Regel, Kejahn Joseph, Daniel Roman and Mark Mamola. Returning at safety positions are Nick French, Matt DeFecchio, Ronnie Mase, Chris Washington and George Rodis. They will be supported by talented newcomers and transfer Frantz Dorcely. At the corner positions juniors Mike Harris, Justin Davis and former receiver Jamel Banks will be joined by talented transfer David Simmons, Jr. The special teams will be led by seniors Noah Moore (placekicker) and John Gieseking (punter) will be relied upon this upcoming season. “This is going to be a big year for Noah,” Conway said. “He is excited about having the opportunity to perform at a high level. He is worked really hard this spring and is poised to contribute in a big way in the kicking game. John meanwhile could prove to be one of the best punters in the league. We are depending upon him to continue to be efficient in
the punting game. The challenging conference slate won’t change in the least with two squads nationally-ranked in the Division III Top 25. “We are going to do everything we can to compete against our opponents who represent one of the most competitive conferences in Division III football.” North Park opens the season with a trip to Mequon, Wisconsin to face a solid Concordia University Wisconsin squad before hosting St. Norbert’s College. The Vikings then travel to face UWOshkosh, a team that has consistently ranked in the top three of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. “Outside of conference play, we face some great non-conference teams this season starting with Concordia Wisconsin, who had one of top offenses in the nation last year. “St. Norbert’s, is an outstanding opponent, which will also provide a big test for us in week two. Our third n o n - c o n fe r e n c e opponent, UWOshkosh is an established national program that we will be able to measure ourselves against. Our nonconference competition will definitely pose a great challenge as we prepare for our conference schedule.

CCIW The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) enters 2015-16 as its 70th season of competition, 30th for women’s sports. During the 2013-14 academic year, the CCIW honored over 1,400 academic all-conference recipients, 14 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, 33 CoSIDA Academic All-District recipients and 87 all-Americans. CCIW schools have accounted for 47 national championships in NCAA Division III competition, including 16 in men’s cross country, six in men’s basketball, six in men’s outdoor track and field, four in football and men’s indoor track and field, three in women’s soccer, two in women’s outdoor track & field, women’s basketball and men’s soccer and one apiece in baseball and women’s indoor track and field. The conference was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946, in Jacksonville, Ill., and opened competition in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois. In 1967, the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, to recognize Carthage, which moved to Kenosha, Wis., in 1962 and Carroll, which entered the conference in 1955. The CCIW sponsors 23 sports, including baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country,
football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, volleyball and wrestling. CCIW membership has experienced several changes since its inception. After Carthage left in 1952, Illinois College withdrew the following year. Elmhurst and Wheaton withdrew following the 1959-60 academic year. Wheaton rejoined for all sports but football in 1967 and for football in 1970. Elmhurst rejoined in the fall of 1967 for all sports but football and for football in the 1968 season. Carroll joined during the 1955 spring sports season. Carthage returned in the fall of 1961 and North Park entered the following fall. Lake Forest dropped out at the end of the 1962-63 academic year. The last member to leave the CCIW was Carroll following the 1991-92 academic year, but Carroll will return to the CCIW beginning in 2016-17 and will serve as an associate member for men’s & women’s lacrosse in 2015-16. In 2015, Washington University in St. Louis became the CCIW’s fourth associate member as the Bears will join the conference for football beginning in the fall of 2018. Now eight members and four associate members strong, the CCIW continues its tradition of athletic and academic excellence.

Concordia (Wis.) North Park
The Vikings opened the 2014 season with a 31-28 loss to visiting Concordia University Wisconsin. Senior David Gonzalez’ 25-yard field goal with 40 seconds remaining spoiled an otherwise memorable offensive performance from North Park quarterback T.D. Conway and the Vikings’ contingent. Conway nearly broke his own single-game record for pass completions, going 35 of 62 for 397 yards and two touchdowns. North Park fell behind 14-0 to start the contest, but showed the resiliency champions are made of by nearly capping a complete T.D. Conway comeback. The Vikings began their rally in the second quarter when D.J. Jones’ three-yard run completed a 10-play, 74-yard drive with 10:14 left in the half. NP then closed within a point at 14-13 after Conway hooked up with older brother Dakota Conway in the back left corner of the end zone ending a 15-yard drive. The Falcons responded with a pair of scores to move ahead 28-13, but North Park fought back by putting up two more scores. T.D. found former NPU baseball player Daniel Anderson on a three-yard pass with 11:30 left in the third, and senior Drew Walkington knotted the score with a three-yard run, ending a 66yard drive with just under five minutes left in the contest. The Vikings did have one last opportunity to pull out the victory in the end when they drove 35 yards down to the Concordia 38, but T.D.’s pass down the right sideline as time expired was broken up in the end zone by three defenders. Anderson finished the day with 12 completions for 111 yards and a touchdown as North Park ran 99 offensive plays. Walkington finished with 69 yards on the ground on 12 carries, averaging nearly six yards per carry (5.8). Joe Butz also recorded eight solo tackles to lead the Viking defense.

Head football coach Mike Conway and the Vikings would like to forget about this one quickly. Hoping to rebound from a close three-point loss the week before, the Vikings instead met a high-powered Alma College offense led by four touchdowns and 460 yards of total offense en route to a 31-7 Scots victory in Michigan. Alma struck early and often, opening up a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter. North Park’s lone score in the game came at the 3:08 mark of the second when sophomore quarterback T.D. Conway connected with Devin Childress (2 catches, 39 yards) for a 38-
yard score. The Vikings offense unfortunately just couldn’t get started. North Park managed 141 yards passing, but garnered only eight first downs. Conway finished the game completing 14 of his 41 passes with no interceptions. Leading the ground game for NP was Drew Walkington and D.J. Jones, who each had 34 and 14 yards rushing, respectively. Junior wide receiver Dakota Conway also had five catches for 64 yards, while Daniel Anderson had six catches for 32 yards. Defensively the Vikings had some bright spots as senior preseason AllAmerican Philip Pendleton had six total tackles, including five unassisted. A week after leading the defensive charge with eight tackles, Joe Butz was once again solid as he matched that number with six assisted tackles, and Kyle Leibforth finished the night with 10 total tackles, including three unassisted.

Wheaton North Park
Despite over 300 yards of total offense and 24 first downs, North Park couldn’t overcome a fierce second quarter from host Washington University St. Louis in a 24-19 loss. Playing in their second meeting in the last four years, the Bears just got the better of North Park as they scored two unanswered touchdowns in the final 5:13 of the first half. After the Vikings took a 13-7 lead on a 16yard pass play from quarterback T.D. Conway to Devin Childress, WashU immediately went to work on a 61-yard, 10-play drive that ended in a two-yard scoring run for Austin Smestad, who finished the game with 60 yards rushing on Joe Butz 13 carries. Nearly four minutes later, the Bears added another score on Sam Van Doren’s 12-yard pass which ended a 49-yard drive in less than two minutes. A 36-yard field goal from WashU’s Alex Hallwachs then gave the hosts a 24-13 advantage late in the third quarter. NP did bounce back with another score early in the fourth when senior Dan Anderson caught a 14-yard strike from Conway ending a 74-yard drive at the 11:26 mark. The Vikings couldn’t generate any other offense thereafter. Conway finished the day completing 24 of his 52 passes for 224 yards, but was unfortunately sacked five times. He threw one other touchdown, a 30-yard bomb to Marcquel Hawkins, ending a 48-yard drive which gave North Park a 7-0 lead early, but WashU tied it at the 8:06 mark of the first on a five-yard run from Smestad. Childress led the receiving attack for NP with 12 catches for 99 yards, while Anderson also 42 yards on six catches. North Park’s ground game unfortunately suffered as well as they garnered only 80 yards. Drew Walkington finished with 97 to lead the charge. Defensively, Joe Butz finished with eight total tackles, while Ryan Boswell had seven and Kyle Leibforth had six. Trevor Forker also recovered a fumble for North Park.
It would be easy for coach Mike Conway and the North Park Vikings to hang their heads after the defeat at Wheaton College, a 48-21 decision in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. Led by 268 yards passing on 26 of 44 completions from sophomore quarterback T.D. Conway, the Vikings scored three touchdowns against a nationally-ranked Wheaton team (No. 19), and out-gained them 268-257 through the air. North Park tallied its first touchdown in the second quarter when Conway hooked Anthony Burton up with senior Daniel Anderson for a 15-yard pass, ending a quick 4-play, 31-yard drive with 11:33 remaining. Later in the second half, North Park put up back-to-back scores in the third quarter when Anderson caught his second touchdown pass of the day, a 36-yard strike from Conway ending a 78-yard drive with 7:31 left. Devin Childress then added the final score on a 9-yard pass from Conway not even two minutes later. Anderson finished the day with five catches for 80 yards and two scores, while Anthony Burton had seven catches for 79 yards. Defensively, senior Philip Pendleton finished with 10 total tackles, including eight solo, while both Ryan Boswell and Dylan Woods each had an interception for North Park (0-4, 0-1).

North Central North Park
It was only a matter of time before Devin Childress would have a breakout game for the Vikings. So it came as no surprise he did it against North Central College. Childress, a freshman wide receiver from Willowbrook High School, caught three touchdown passes and garnered 117 yards through the air as the Vikings returned home after a three-week road trip. Sophomore quarterback T.D. Conway also had solid day as he completed 23 of 45 passes for 349 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown pass to Terrence Wright, which was a careerDevin Childress long scoring pass for Conway. North Park garnered 404 total yards of offense and put up a pair of scores in the second quarter. Childress caught his first TD pass of the day an 11-yard toss from Conway with 13:10 remaining in the period, then snatched another 11-yard strike from Conway nearly four minutes later. After Wright excited the crowd in the third quarter with the Vikings’ third score of the game, Childress snared his final TD catch, a 17-yard pass from Conway with 2:29 left in the contest. The Vikings recorded 21 first downs, and both Daniel Anderson (90) and Wright (92) had over 90 yards receiving. Defensively, senior Philip Pendleton recorded seven solo tackles and Nick French had six and an interception while sophomore Mike Harris blocked a North Central field goal midway through the fourth quarter.

Elmhurst North Park
Elmhurst quarterback Joe Camiliere excited the Homecoming crowd at Langhorst Field as he led the Bluejay offense with over 300 yards of total offense in a 28-0 victory over the visiting Vikings. Camiliere completed 17 of his 24 passes for 262 yards while rushing for an additional 45 on the ground. He threw for two of Elmhurst’s TDs and ran for another as the Bluejays improved to 4-2 on the year and 3-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. North Park’s offense meanwhile uncharacteristically struggled unfortunately as Chaun Maiava the Vikings amassed only 166 yards of total offense. Sophomore quarterback T.D. Conway was able to connect on 11 of his 33 passes, but threw for only 104 yards. Anthony Burton was his top target as he caught four passes for 78 yards. The Vikings managed to reach the red zone twice in the second quarter, but were denied both times by the Elmhurst defense. Noah Moore had an opportunity to put NP on the scoreboard with a 29-yard field goal with 13:14 left in the period but it was blocked. North Park’s second opportunity –where they reached the Elmhurst 18-yard line—just came up short as well unfortunately. Drew Walkington led the Vikings’ ground game with 18 carries for 65 yards. Defensively, Chaun Maiava had a breakout game as he collected 11 total tackles, including eight unassisted. Trevor Forker also had five unassisted tackles and Matt Leibforth recorded a sack for the Vikings.

Last year the Vikings broke a 42-year losing streak when they defeated Millikin 35-32. This season, they set another record against Millikin, earning their second-straight victory over the Big Blue. Led by 325 yards on 29 of 53 pass completions from sophomore quarterback T.D. Conway, North Park earned a 26-7 win. The victory marked only the second time in the history of the NPU program that the Vikings have defeated Millikin in back-toback seasons. The last was during the 1967 and 1968 campaigns. North Park’s offense dazzled the NPU alumni, families and fans. The Vikings amassed nearly 530 yards of total offense and scored a touchdown in T.D. Conway every quarter. Conway gave NP the early advantage when he connected with Devin Childress for a 16-yard pass play, which ended an 80-yard drive with 7:36 left in the first quarter. Childress then caught his second TD pass of the day in the second when Conway found the freshman for a seven-yard strike ending a 68-yard drive. The Vikings held a 13-0 lead at halftime as 1 of their 2 point-after-touchdown (PATs) was successful, but NP was far from completing the task. This matchup also marked the return of junior wide receiver Dakota Conway, who returned from injury to catch eight passes for 44 yards, including a touchdown in the third quarter from brother TD, a seven-yard strike that ended a 44-yard drive. After Millikin’s lone score of the game opened the fourth quarter, North Park added its final TD of the day when Anthony Burton broke free for a 34-yard pass play down the right sideline. Childress led the Vikings air attack as he had eight catches for 114 yards, while Drew Walkington dominated the ground game, gaining just under 100 yards (92) on 17 carries. Defensively, Dylan Woods finished with five solo tackles and senior Philip Pendleton had an interception. Woods was also responsible for two pass breakups.
North Park’s bid at making it two-straight victories against host Augustana College just came up a little short. The Vikings held a 13-10 lead early in the third quarter and later 20-13, but AC came back with two scores and a field goal to pull out a 26-20 victory for its fourth win of the season. Sophomore quarterback T.D. Conway threw for three touchdowns and nearly 300 yards (284) as he completed 26 of his 38 attempts, but Augustana used a solid ground game led by 178 yards on 29 carries from Brandon Price. Brendon Dull In all, the hosts garnered 367 of their 460 yards on the ground. North Park overcame an early 10-0 deficit after Conway hooked up with Max Current for his first touchdown of the day, a three-yard pass to Current, ending a 44-yard drive. The Vikings then put together another scoring drive, this time a 78-yard scamper that ended in a nine-yard pass from Conway to Devin Childress with 12:17 left in the third. After an Augustana field goal knotted the score at 13, Conway responded with his third TD pass of the game, finding Childress once again for a 23-yard pass with just under four minutes remaining in the third. Childress led the Vikings air attack as he had nine catches for 137 yards while Dakota Conway grabbed nine catches for 49 yards. Defensively Brendon Dull had nine solo tackles, and Matt Leibforth eight. Three different Vikings recovered fumbles as well as Joe Butz, Chaun Maiava and Hunter Corrigan all recorded one.

llinois Wesleyan North Park
Led by 448 yards of total offense, North Park earned a 36-14 victory going away as it picked up its second-straight win over the Red Men, the first such streak since the 1992-’93 seasons. Freshman wide receiver Devin Childress had four catches for 79 yards, but more importantly caught three touchdown passes in leading NP to its second College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory in the last three games. Junior Anthony Burton also had seven catches for 82 yards, and sophomore quarterback T.D. Conway completed 26 of his 42 passes for an even 300 yards as he also set the single season record for pass attempts with 409, eclipsing the old record of Devin Childress 405 held by Mike Haehn in the 2004 season. After giving up an early first-quarter touchdown, the Vikings offense exploded by scoring 36 unanswered points. Childress caught his first TD pass of the day on a 23-yard strike from Conway which ended a 30-yard drive, knotting the score at 7-7 with 11:52 left in the first quarter. Exactly seven minutes later Childress caught his second touchdown of the day on a six-yard toss from Conway which ended a 33-yard drive. Defensively, North Park was stellar as its defense held Carthage to the secondlowest offensive output of the season, 182 yards of total offense. The Vikings also forced one fumble, and Ryan Boswell came up with a 37-yard interception that was nearly returned for a touchdown early in the game. North Park added its third touchdown of the day in the second when Burton caught a three-yard pass from Conway ending a 57-yard drive, and Childress nabbed his third TD of the game – a 33-yard burst down the right sideline – to give NP a 28-7 advantage with 31 seconds left in the first half. A pair of Noah Moore field goals – one from 19 yards and the other from 28 yards out – sandwiched a defensive team safety with 7:29 left in the contest. Carthage added its final touchdown with just under three minutes remaining in the game.
The North Park football team ended the 2014 season with a 35-21 loss to host Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. IWU’s offense just proved to be too much for the Vikings as the hosts garnered over 500 yards of total offense, including nearly 300 yards rushing in improving their record to 4-6 on the year. North Park ended the season with a 2-8 record. Illinois Wesleyan seized control with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter and later a third TD in the second to pull ahead 20-0, but North Park fought back late in the second quarter with a 58-yard drive that ended in a 31-yard touchdown Hunter Corrigan pass from T.D. Conway to Delano Braxton with 6:07 left. The Vikings then closed within two possessions just before halftime at 28-14 after Anthony Burton nabbed a 24-yard strike from Conway to end a 65-yard drive. The Titans weren’t going to be denied on their Senior Day however as they tallied their final score of the game early in the fourth quarter on a seven-yard run from Jack Warner. North Park did add one more touchdown on the day when Devin Childress, who had a freshman season to remember, caught a three-yard touchdown pass, his 14th of the season, ending an 86-yard drive. In all, Conway completed 27 of his 46 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns. He finished the season with 455 pass attempts, breaking the single-season school record for that category. Childress’ 14 TD catches this season also tied the NPU singleseason school record set by former NFL player, late Paul Zaeske. Defensively, senior Trevor Forker finished the day with seven solo tackles, and Philip Pendleton had one interception return for 13 yards, to go along with five solo tackles.

Academic Success LIVES OF SIGNIFICANCE AND SERVICE. The mission of North Park, as an intentionally Christian university of the Evangelical Covenant Church, is to prepare students for lives of significance and service through liberal arts, professional studies, and theological education. Our vision, building on our core institutional identity — Christian, urban, multicultural — is to fashion a university of uncommon character and enduring excellence where faith and learning meet. Our philosophy clearly identifies and develops high caliber students. We foster an atmosphere of academic excellence that allows our students the chance to pursue a multitude of options after graduation. In the past year, we have had over 50 Academic All-Conference recipients who counted themselves proud to be North Park Viking student-athletes. Through both campus and private organizations, on the local and national level, our student athletes recognize the need to give back to their community and constituencies.
Members of the Vikings’ football team and the Student Athlete Advisory Council sponsor “Viking Kids Day”, hosting underprivileged local youth at our home athletic events, as well as providing tutoring and mentorship. The Student Athlete Advisory Council and the CHAMPS/Lifeskills program nominate Viking athletes for the NCAA National Leadership Conference. North Park had the honor of recognizing 12 student-athletes as Academic All-CCIW recipients for maintaining a grade point average of 3.30 or higher. Senior Noah Moore also received the distinction of being honored as the Jack Swartz Award recipient, the highest CCIW academic award for a student-athlete, as he possessed a GPA of 3.50 or higher. In doing so, he became the first NPU football player to earn the honor in the last two years. North Park’s 12 Academic All-CCIW selections is the second-most for the program in the last nine years as only 10 or more student-athletes have been selected for the prestigious academic award for the football team three times in the last nine academic school years. In order to qualify for CCIW Academic All-Conference, a student-athlete must carry a 3.30 grade point average or higher and must have been a letter winner for the season.

President David L. Parkyn
David L. Parkyn has served as president of North Park University in Chicago since 2006. Previously he was Provost and Senior Vice President at Elizabethtown College, following two decades of service on the faculty and in administrative appointments at Messiah College. By vocation an educator, President Parkyn has dedicated his professional career to teaching undergraduates and leading institutions of higher learning. He earned a bachelor of arts from Messiah College (Grantham, Penn.), a master of divinity from GordonConwell Theological Seminary (South Hamilton, Mass.), and a doctor of philosophy from Boston College (Chestnut Hill, Mass.). He also completed post-graduate study at both Boston College and Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass.). President Parkyn is an active leader in higher education in Illinois and nationally. He has been active in the Society for College and North Park University has a rich history which has shaped the institution we are today. Established by a Swedish immigrant faith community on the far north side of Chicago, North Park is an academic community molded by a commitment of faith, located in the heart of a world-class city, and comprised of people from myriad world cultures and ethnic traditions. We summarize this heritage and present character in three short phrases: North Park University is Christian, urban, and intercultural. In his recent book, Seeing the Light: Religious Colleges in Twenty-First Century America (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2010), higher education scholar Samuel Schuman profiled North Park University and described it as a place which is “difficult to compare to others.” Schuman wrote: North Park University “is, on the one

University Planning, is a member of the Board of Directors for NAICU, is a member of the Executive Committee of the Associated Colleges of Illinois, and is a member of the Board of Directors for Illinois Campus Compact. President Parkyn also provides leadership in our athletic conference as chair of the CCIW President’s Council. President Parkyn is married to Dr. Linda Parkyn, an accomplished teacher and scholar who currently serves as professor of Spanish and director of the Honors Program at North Park University. Previously Professor Parkyn was on the faculty at Messiah College, served as a Fulbright Scholar at the Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes, Mexico, from 2001-2002, and continues as a Fulbright Senior Specialist. Married for nearly 40 years, the Parkyns have two children. Their daughter, Betsy Parkyn Cruickshank, is married to Calder Cruickshank. They have three children; Will, Anna, and Cate. The Cruickshanks reside in Marblehead, MA. Their son, Nathaniel David Parkyn, is married to Casey, and they live in Philadelphia, PA. They are the proud parents of twins, Carter and Ella.
hand, vigorously religious and strongly denominational with a continuing tie to a particular immigrant population, and yet equally strongly and vigorously open to students from the widest diversity of backgrounds. It occupies a pleasant green and historical campus, in the very middle of a bustling major American city. Perhaps most impressive and surprising, not only is North Park University Christian, urban, and multicultural, but it has managed to be all those things and also to be coherent.” As you visit the University’s web site, and as you have occasion to visit our campus and know the people who teach and learn here, I’m confident you’ll discover for yourself this distinctive character, intentional ethos, and purposeful mission and vision central to North Park University. Welcome to North Park!

During his tenure at North Park his focus has been on the improvement of facilities, staff, and programs. The River Park Soccer/Track Complex was completed in 2000 and renovated in 2013, the Holmgren Athletic Complex was dedicated in 2004 and improved in 2013, and the Helwig Recreation Center was opened in the fall of 2006. Varsity locker rooms have been renovated in 2011 and 2014. Women’s golf and rowing were added as varsity programs in 1999 and 2003. In the fall of 2014 women’s tennis returned after an eleven year hiatus. In 2008 the athletic department infrastructure was enhanced by the implementation of a graduate assistant program. This program has been expanded to seventeen positions to include all sports, athletic training, intramurals, fitness and sports information. The graduate assistant program
has been instrumental in increasing the number of athletes at North Park University from 318 to 440 in seven years. Surridge also has an extensive career in collegiate coaching (football, women’s basketball, baseball, and softball) with a combined career record of 571 - 397 including ten conference championships and seventeen tournament titles (one national championship). He holds a doctorate in zoology from the University of Nebraska and was inducted into the Concordia University–St. Paul (1994) and Concordia University–Wisconsin (2006) halls of fame. Dr. Surridge is married to Mary Surridge, who serves as the Vice President of Development at North Park University. They are the proud parents of one daughter, Jessie, a junior honors student at Von Steuben High School.
Athletic History History of Success
At North Park University, our past athletic success is considerable. We choose to honor that tradition actively because we know the roots of our historical achievements help us continue to build a vibrant, diverse, and successful offering of NCAA athletic programs. Our men’s basketball team has gained national attention by being crowned NCAA Division III national champions five times. Only four other NCAA basketball programs in any division have matched that level of success. Our baseball program has won six CCIW titles and has competed in six NCAA National Tournaments. Several Vikings hold positions in the NCAA record books for career and single season statistical accomplishments. Football, men’s basketball, and baseball have had over 50 players sign professional contracts after their Viking careers.
A Bright Future
Our present accomplishments are just as considerable. Today, we continue to garner national attention in a number of sports, and we are poised to continue the winning Viking tradition. Our men’s soccer team won CCIW titles in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2010, competed in the NCAA National Tournament in 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014 and has been nationally

ranked from 2005-2013. They have had 63 AllCCIW players since 1999. Our women’s rowing team has earned gold, silver, and bronze medals in their first three years of competition at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. This feat has been achieved by very few rowing teams. Our women’s basketball team has won seven tournament championships since 2003. Our baseball team competed in the NCAA tournament in 2012, and has had numerous All-Region and All-America award winners, including two prestigious Rawlings National “Gold Glove” recipients in the last two seasons. North Park University athletes have distinguished themselves off the playing field serving as North Park University student senate president in 2012 (Casey Smagala - football) and 2013 (Tim Ahlberg - soccer). Vikings were named Academic All Americans in 2012, 2013 and 2014.The CCIW Man of the Year in 2012 (football - Josh Startup) and 2013 (Ahlberg) were North Parkers. Recent academic recognition has gone to Fulbright Scholar Tim Ahlberg in 2013 and to Shelby Switzer (volleyball) who was the recipient of the prestigious NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship in 2014.
