FALL 2021 EVENTS NEWSLETTER
SCHOOL OF MUSIC, ART, AND THEATRE The Carlson Tower Art Gallery presents exhibitions throughout the year and is open to the public every day from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. Featured exhibitions this fall include works by NPU alumni Steven Signa-Aviles, Ashley Gies, and Dhalia Salgado. Please follow the Gallery website, www.carlsontowergallery.org, for updated information on all exhibits. Following a year of adaptive virtual performances, the Music and Theatre departments will return to live performance this year with a wide variety of presentations to suit every taste. The always popular Project 24, written, directed, and acted by students, all within a 24hour period, will be presented on November 6, and the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols will return “home” to Anderson Chapel. Performances may be live streamed or recorded and released at a later date. Visit our event calendar for the most up to date information. For live performances, audience members will be required to wear masks at all times, regardless of vaccination status, and may be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result to attend.

PROJECT 24 NOVEMBER 6, 7:30 PM
The first exhibition will feature the works of alumnus Steven Signa-Aviles C’2012, who recently completed his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Illinois and accepted a teaching position at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. An artist’s talk and reception will be held in the gallery on Tuesday, September 28, 4:00-7:00 p.m. Music department faculty step out from the teaching studio to demonstrate their performance acumen. This concert will be held as a part of North Park’s 2021 Homecoming celebration. An evening of music for small ensembles of varying instrumentation, led by instructor of saxophone, Richard Brasseale, and including members of the North Park music faculty and other musicians from throughout the Chicagoland area. The artwork of long-time faculty member Gayle Bradley-Johnson, who retired from North Park in 2001. This is the first exhibit of Professor BradleyJohnson’s artwork in the Carlson Tower Gallery since her retirement. An artist’s talk and reception will be held in the gallery on Tuesday, October 5, 4:30-7:00 p.m., and a virtual artist talk will be livestreamed* on Thursday, October 7, 5:00-7:00 p.m. as a part of North Park’s 2021 Homecoming celebration. A collaborative arts event showcasing student work in Wilson Hall. The University Choir and Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Julia Davids, and the Women’s Chorale directed by Dr. Tom Tropp, will explore the theme of “Renaissance” (Rebirth) through a variety of choral repertoire from the sixteenth century through the present day. The Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Joe Lill, and two jazz combos, directed by Audrey Morrison and Christopher White, will present jazz favorites. A student-written, student-directed, and studentacted performance completely conceived, written, and produced within a 24-hour period. Come see the caffeine-fueled creativity of North Park’s talented students.

Two exhibits by NPU alumni of the class of 2020, including works produced while in residence at North Park. Ms. Gies’s and Ms. Salgado’s Senior Exhibits were disrupted due to the pandemic. An artist’s talk and reception will be held in the gallery on Tuesday, October 26, 4:00-7:00 p.m. for Ms. Gies and on Tuesday, November 9, 4:00-7:00 p.m. for Ms. Salgado. Directed by Dr. Tom Zelle, the University Orchestra presents a program built out of last year’s Human Values theme, “Climate, Water, Rain….” Works will include the J.S. Bach Double Concerto for Oboe and Violin, BWV 1060.

Designed for a digital platform, graduate students present a new, 90-minute version of Handel’s early opera “Faramondo”. The Concert Band will be presenting a performance of wide-ranging styles including contemporary wind compositions, music from the stage or screen, and an uplifting march to finish the concert!

We welcome Advent this year with an on-campus celebration as well as a video release, to engage and connect our community in the anticipation of the coming of Christ. This beloved tradition will return “home” to Anderson Chapel. The Gospel Choir, University Choir, Women’s Chorale, Chamber Singers, University Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and Concert Band will join University Organist, Dr. John W.W. Sherer, to reflect upon the “Greatest Story Ever Told.”
