2017 Season Preview Hope springs eternal for the North Park football team in 2017 campaign as this year’s squad will boast 20 seniors for the first time under fifth-year head coach Mike Conway. Resiliency has been the key for this group of four-year players, and their leadership throughout will prove vital to the success of this year’s squad. “This team has a chance to turn the corner as our leadership from our seniors and returning players is at the highest level in the last five years,” Conway said. North Park opens the season with two solid non-conference opponents in Anderson University – a team they defeated 41-13 on opening weekend last season – and NAIA foe Midland University, which started 2016 5-0 before finishing out the year with a 7-4 mark. The Vikings then return home to open College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play with Elmhurst College Homecoming weekend where they hope to earn their fourth HC win in the last five seasons.

Howson, Sidney Francois-Friis and Gary Anish all of whom received playing time in 2016. “I feel we return a great group of committed defensive players who are familiar with each other and are confident in our defensive system,” Conway said. “Our confidence level in our system and in each other is at a very high level. This should translate into defensive success in 2017.”

receiver Norman Cupicciotti who returns this season while working toward completing his grad school course work at North Park. Also, returning are juniors Travis Dworzynski, Hunter Hinkel and the versatile senior, Sean Burke. They will be supported by a talented group of upperclassmen and newcomers. Leading rusher and senior Enrique Menendez returns at the running back position along with seniors John Wilkinson and James Herron (who suffered a season-ending injury in camp last year) and a talented young group of running backs. For the first time in four years however, North Park will be looking to a new quarterback and the competition in camp has been strong between Anthony DiNardo and newcomer Frank Mauigoa as both are vying for the starting spot. “All of our quarterbacks have done well. It has been exciting to see their improvement and their development as the leaders of our offense,” Conway said.

“This team has a chance to turn the corner as our leadership from our seniors is at the highest level in the past five years.” ~ Coach Conway Similarly, the offense returns a substantial amount of top players from last year’s team. In all, nine starters will provide strong leadership to a new and exciting offensive system. The offensive line will lead the way and will be solid as the unit returns four starters, some of whom were playing in their first games in 2016. Seniors Quentyn Jackson and Derrick Mosley and sophomore Obadiah Faletoi will join last year’s starters Zach Sandlin, George Tafua Jr., and George Corey as the returning corps that are charged with improving the running game and protecting our quarterbacks. Boosting the receiving corps will be the return of senior Denton Delgado and top 2016

Chaun Maiava

Matt DiFecchio

“Each week we will be challenged in this conference. It’s up to us to rise to that challenge,” Conway said. The defense returns almost intact from last year with nine returning starters, including six seniors and All-CCIW Linebacker Chaun Maiava, All-CCIW safety Matt DiFecchio as well as 2016 All-CCIW Defensive Back David Simmons Jr. Additionally, the unit returns a foursome of senior defensive linemen in Mark Mamola, KJ Joseph, Austin Regel and Wilson Ray. Also returning are linebackers Uluao Letuli, Quentin Voce, defensive backs Dalton McKay, Ryan

One area of concern in the past has been the kicking game, but as the 2016 season progressed it became a position of strength for the Vikings. Sophomore Alexis Santillan handled all the kicking duties and did so very effectively. As the punter and place kicker he proved that he was more than capable punting well as he went 6 for 6 in field goals and was a perfect 19 for 19 in PATs in 2016. Also, returning as an outstanding long snapper is sophomore Seth Swanson. This should make for an exciting season of North Park University Viking football.

CCIW

The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) enters 2017-18 as its 72nd season of competition, 32nd for women’s sports. CCIW schools have accounted for 50 national championships in NCAA Division III competition, including 17 in men’s cross country, six in men’s basketball, six in men’s outdoor track and field, five in men’s indoor track and field, four in football, three in women’s soccer, three in women’s outdoor track & field, two in women’s basketball and men’s soccer and one apiece in baseball and women’s indoor track and field. Wheaton College won a men’s basketball title under the NCAA College Division in 1957, while North Central College won four National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics titles in men’s swimming (1958, 1961, 1962, 1963). Additionally, Elmhurst College won a pair of NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships (1983 and 1985), and North Central College won a women’s basketball title (1983) before the conference began sponsorship of women’s athletics in 1986-87. The conference was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946, in Jacksonville, Ill., and opened competition in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois. In 1967, the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, to recognize Carthage, which moved to Kenosha, Wis., in 1962 and Carroll, which entered the conference in 1955. The CCIW sponsors 23 sports, including baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, volleyball and wrestling. CCIW membership has experienced several changes since its inception. After Carthage left in 1952, Illinois College withdrew the following year. Elmhurst and Wheaton withdrew following the 1959-60 academic year. Wheaton rejoined for all sports but football in 1967 and for football in 1970. Elmhurst rejoined in the fall of 1967 for all sports but football and for football in the 1968 season. Carroll joined during the 1955 spring sports season. Carthage returned in the fall of 1961 and North Park entered the following fall. Lake Forest dropped out at the end of the 1962-63 academic year. The last member to leave the CCIW was Carroll following the 1991-92 academic year, but returned to the CCIW as a full member in 2016-17. Washington University in St. Louis will join as an associate member for football beginning in the fall of 2018, while the University of Chicago, located in the south side neighborhood of Hyde Park, will join as an associate member for women’s lacrosse starting in 2018-19 and will begin competition in the spring of 2019. Now nine members and four associate members strong, the CCIW continues its tradition of athletic and academic excellence.

Despite the loss of six starters to graduation, including all four of its All-CCIW selections, Augustana looks to improve on its 3-7 record a year ago with 16 returning starters. Junior Ryan Pitra returns at the fullback position and Augie will look to junior quarterback Luke Bleyer, who finished with 1,035 yards passing and four touchdowns in 2016.

CARROLL

The Pioneers look to improve on last year’s 1-9 record despite the loss of its lone All-CCIW wide receiver Brandon Ehrke and starting quarterback Kyle Burlingame to graduation. Hoping to fill the void will be junior wide receiver Drake Pusateri as well as top tackler Andrew Danculovich.

CARTHAGE

Coming off its best season under sixth-year head coach Mike Yeager where the Red Men finished with a 7-3 record – only the 19th season of seven or more victories in program history, Carthage returns six of its nine All-CCIW players from a year ago.

ELMHURST

With the return of wide receiver Jawan Gaines, who was one of only two freshmen named to the All-CCIW First Team, for his sophomore season as well as All-CCIW second team quarterback Orlando Hernandez, the Bluejays hope to build on last year’s .500 overall record.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN

Entering his 31st season as head coach, Norm Eash and the Titans are poised to better their 7-2 overall mark and 6-2 CCIW record after earning votes in the D3Football.com Top 25 Preseason National Poll. The Titans return two All-CCIW Second Team selections - Brinton Wilkey and Justin Krzeczkowski.

MILLIKIN

After a 2016 campaign that produced the Big Blue’s best conference finish in seven seasons, Millikin looks to ride success into this year with the return of All-CCIW selections Gerald Perry and Quintaz Wright for their junior seasons. Quarterback Nicco Stepina, returns for his junior year as well.

NORTH CENTRAL

The Cardinals enter the 2017 season as the No. 7 nationally-ranked team in the D3Football.com Top 25 Preseason Poll. NCC earned the conference championship with a perfect 8-0 record and return D3Football.com preseason First Team All-American Joe Fehrle as well Billy Douds and Tom Sora. Despite the loss of quarterback T.D. Conway, who set the NPU career passing record of 9,113 yards, the Vikings look to improve on last year’s record with a slew of returners, including All-CCIW second team defensive selections Matt DiFecchio and Chaun Maiava for their senior years.

WHEATON

As the CCIW runner-up from a year ago, the Thunder hopes to improve on last year’s 11-2 record. Wheaton enters the year as the No. 6 nationallyranked team in the D3Football.com Top 25 preseason poll after reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III playoffs in 2016.

Academic Success

LIVES OF SIGNIFICANCE AND SERVICE.

The mission of North Park, as an intentionally Christian university of the Evangelical Covenant Church, is to prepare students for lives of significance and service through liberal arts, professional studies, and theological education. Our vision, building on our core institutional identity — Christian, urban, multicultural — is to fashion a university of uncommon character and enduring excellence where faith and learning meet. Our philosophy clearly identifies and develops high caliber students. We foster an atmosphere of academic excellence that allows our students the chance to pursue a multitude of options after graduation. In the past year, we have had over 110 Academic AllConference recipients who counted themselves proud to be North Park Viking student-athletes. Through both campus and private organizations, on the local and national level, our student athletes recognize the need to give back to their community and constituencies. Academic Success Members of the Vikings’ football team and the Student Athlete Advisory Council sponsor “Viking Kids Day”, hosting underprivileged local youth at our home athletic events, as well as providing tutoring and mentorship. The Student Athlete Advisory Council and the CHAMPS/Lifeskills program nominate Viking athletes for the NCAA National Leadership Conference. North Park had the honor of recognizing nine student-athletes as Academic All-CCIW recipients for maintaining a grade point average of 3.30 or higher. Junior Wilson Ray also received the distinction of being honored as the Jack Swartz Award recipient, the highest CCIW academic award for a student-athlete, as he possessed a GPA of 3.50 or higher. In doing so, he became the third NPU football player to earn the honor in the last five years.

Listed below are the 2016-17 CCIW Academic All-Conference Team:

Ronnie Mase

Travis Dwozynski Obadiah Faletoi Nicholas French KJ Joseph

During his tenure at North Park [1996-2017] Dr. Jack Surridge’s focus has been on the improvement of facilities, staff, and programs. The River Park Soccer / Track complex was completed in 2000 and renovated in 2013. The Holmgren Athletic Complex was dedicated in 2004 and renovated in 2017. The Helwig Recreation Center was opened in the fall of 2006 and the WMS Rowing Center was dedicated in 2013. Women’s rowing was added as a varsity sport in 2003 and in the fall of 2014 women’s tennis returned after an eleven-year hiatus. In 2008 the athletic department infrastructure was enhanced by the introduction of a graduate assistant program. This program has been expanded to seventeen positions to include all sports, athletic training, intramurals, fitness, and sports information. The graduate assistant program has been instrumental in increasing the number of athletes at North Park from 318 to 460 in nine years.

A four-sport letter winner as a collegian, Surridge also has an extensive career in collegiate coaching (football, women’s basketball, baseball, and softball) with a combined record of 571 – 397 including thirteen conference titles and twentyfour tournament titles including one national championship. Surridge is the only NCAA Division III coach to post over 100 wins at three schools. He holds a doctorate in zoology from the University of Nebraska. He has been inducted into the Concordia University -St. Paul (1994) and Concordia University Wisconsin (2006) halls of fame and will be inducted into North Park University halls of fame in December of 2017. Dr. Surridge is married to Mary Surridge who serves as the Vice President of Advancement at North Park University. They are of proud parents of one daughter, Jessie, who will be a first-year student in strategic communication at Butler University this fall.

Athletic History History of Success

At North Park University, our past athletic success is considerable. We choose to honor that tradition actively because we know the roots of our historical achievements help us continue to build a vibrant, diverse, and successful offering of NCAA athletic programs. Our men’s basketball team has gained national attention by being crowned NCAA Division III national champions five times. Only four other NCAA basketball programs in any division have matched that level of success, and this past winter they earned their first conference championship in 30 years. Our baseball program has won six CCIW titles and has competed in six NCAA National Tournaments. Several Vikings hold positions in the NCAA record books for career and single season statistical accomplishments. Football, men’s basketball, and baseball have had over 50 players sign professional contracts after their Viking careers.

2012 (Casey Smagala - football), 2013 (Tim Ahlberg - soccer) and 2016 (Jamel Banks - football). Vikings were named Academic All Americans in each of the last six years. The CCIW Man of the Year in 2012 (football - Josh Startup) and 2013 (Ahlberg) were North Parkers. Recent academic recognition has gone to Fulbright Scholar Tim Ahlberg in 2013 and to Shelby Switzer (volleyball) who was the recipient of the prestigious NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship in 2014.

A Bright Future

Our present accomplishments are just as considerable. Today, we continue to garner national attention in a number of sports, and we are poised to continue the winning Viking tradition. Our men’s soccer team won CCIW titles in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2010, competed in the NCAA National Tournament in 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014 and has been nationally ranked from 2005-2013. They have had 68 All-CCIW players since 1999. Our women’s rowing team has earned gold, silver, and bronze medals in their first three years of competition at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. This feat has been achieved by very few rowing teams. Our women’s basketball team has won eight tournament championships since 2003. Our baseball team competed in the NCAA tournament in 2012, and has had numerous All-Region and All-America award winners, including three prestigious Rawlings National “Gold Glove” recipients in 2014, 2015 and 2017. North Park University athletes have distinguished themselves off the playing field serving as North Park University student senate president in
