Irish wrestling team has a different look St. Pat’s open in some middle weights By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
St. Pat’s wrestling coach Kevin Wood has seen a lot in his 25 years of coaching. While this season’s roster is different, it also has its advantages. The Irish have 14 wrestlers on the varsity roster and all are eligible for two weight classes, which gives the team flexibility in dual matches. What’s a little different this season is that St. Pat’s is open at four weight classes, four middle weight classes. “It’s a little different, having lower weight classes and heavier weight classes and being open in the middle,” Wood said. “It is what it is, and we’ll deal with it as the season goes.” Trey Dodson and Nathan Chrisman return at 106 and 113 pounds. From 120 to 152 the Irish have Adam Pasquinelly at 132 and Matthew Ferguson, a freshman, at 138. Pasquinelly was 40-7 a year ago and placed fifth in the state tournament. Other state qualifiers for the Irish include Dodson, Joel Melton at 170 pounds, Henry Aufdenkamp at 182 pounds and Bruan Shurigar at 285 pounds. “We’ve got some experience,” Wood said. “If some of our younger guys come on, we’ll have a tough team again.” Wood uses the early part of the season to work on technique. “It doesn’t matter how good of shape you are in if you don’t know what you’re doing,” the coach said. “While we always work on conditioning, it’s
important for us to work on technique early in the season.” Two wrestlers are returning 100 percent after being hurt a season ago. Pedro Martinez, the Irish 195-pounder, was hurt during the football season last year and missed a large portion of the wrestling season. Shurigar broke his arm in the District final, ending his season. Both are at 100 percent for the start of this season. The Irish went 3-2 in the Southwest Dual Tournament to open the season and then won the Bronco Invite in Mullen. “We placed nine of 11 guys we took,” Wood said. “Our focus is to earn experience early in the season.” Wood said his open varsity spots haven’t hurt the team thus far. “While we have the open spots, we have wrestlers at the light weights and the heavy weights, and some teams may not have both,” Wood said. “It provides us with a chance to match up as we need to.” The Irish are the defending SPVA Conference champions and were second in District D-4 last year. This year the Irish move up to Class C in wrestling. “As far as the SPVA, it’s a lot of fun,” Wood said. “We’ve got some really good teams in the conference and it’s a fun tournament. “Everything else, well, it is what it is. We’ll move forward and do the best we can, like we always do.”
St. Pat’s seeking return to state tournament field Irish returning several important pieces By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
A year ago, the St. Pat’s boys basketball team advanced to the state tournament. Now, the Irish want to go back. While the Irish lost two seniors from that state team, the returning players have plenty of firepower coming back to lead St. Pat’s. Two key players for the Irish this season are seniors Sean Keenan and Joseph Clinch. Keenan is a guard while Clinch is a post player for St. Pat’s. “Joe is pretty physical,” said Irish head coach Bill O’Malley. “He’s steady and reliable inside and he’s a good basketball player. “Sean is also a good basketball player. He’s got great sight on the court and just knows what needs to be done. He puts the ball where it needs to be.” While Keenan and Clinch may be keys for the Irish, they are by no means the only ball players O’Malley can rely on. Also returning this season are Mark Mayfield, Joseph O’Malley, Brandon Niesen, Alex Harms and Matthew Buhrman. All of them have experience from a season ago. “We have a lot of guys who will do whatever needs to be done to win a bas-
ketball game,” O’Malley said. “It’s a strength of this team. “These players have an understanding of what we want and what needs to be done and they will go and do it.” The Irish will be one of the favorites in the SPVA Conference and O’Malley believes the conference is a good test for his team. “This conference is always tough,” the coach said. “We have a lot of teams who, on any given night, can knock you off. “You learn in a hurry not to overlook anyone.” O’Malley listed Perkins County as a tough conference opponent. “Perkins County, Chase County, Hershey,” the coach said. “They can all win and they may start slow, but I’d bet they are there at the end of the season.” As for his vision of the Irish this year? “We have a great opportunity and I think the guys see that and believe in it,” O’Malley said. “We know where we want to, how we need to improve to get there and where we want the season to end. “It’s a great opportunity and we’re ready for it.”

Lady Irish return most of state tournament squad St. Pat’s girls ready for another state run By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
One might think losing a senior who ran your offense would be a death knell to a state tournament team. Well, it’s not. St. Pat’s returns all but one player from a state tournament team a year ago. Candice Shelton led the Lady Irish offense a season ago, handling the ball, making decisions and helping the Lady Irish to the State Basketball Tournament. This season Shelton is gone, but the Lady Irish return everyone else from that squad and added a transfer from Maxwell. St. Pat’s is hungry for another state tournament run, and they have the athletes to make it happen. Four starters — Shelby Allberry, Mandy O’Malley, Sam Byrn and Brittany Lawrence — along with returners Anna O’Malley, Erin Nozicka, Toni Caudillo, Bree Saner, Kari Slattery, Natalie Mackley and CharLeigh Kadlecek, means the Lady Irish are deep and experienced. Oh, and Brook Boucher is playing for the Lady Irish, moving from Maxwell. “Not too much has

whether it’s handle the ball, go rebound, break the press or play defense on the opposing team’s best player.” One team already on the Lady Irish radar is Hershey. The Lady Panthers, who also went to the state tournament a year ago, will be in Class C2 this season and will be in the same sub-district as the Lady Irish. “They will be tough, no doubt,” Stienike said of Hershey. “It’s always fun for both teams and both communities when we get together for a game. “With both of ranked in the Top 10 before the season starts, I think that’s tremendous for both schools, the SPVA Conference and western Nebraska. “If we both play as we’re capable, we will help each other out.” Another tough SPVA opponent will be Sutherland. “If you can play well in the SPVA Conference, you will be all right,” Stienike said. “It’s such a tough conference that it forces you to improve all the time. “We know what we want. We’ve set our goals for the season. It’s time to play.”

changed,” Lady Irish head coach Nathan Stienike said. “We don’t have a true point guard, but we didn’t last season. “Both the O’Malley girls can handle the ball. Boucher can handle the ball and Sam can handle the ball and run the offense.” The O’Malley girls are both small, quick guards. Boucher and Byrn can play guard or forward, while Allberry and Lawrence provide the post play. Allberry can also play outside. While the Lady Irish have experience, size, speed and scoring ability, Stienike likes his team’s toughness. “That’s something we’ve learned is that we have toughness,” the coach said. “We know there will be some very physical games and we’re ready for that. “We have what we want to do, but we can adjust and play how we need to.” Stienike said his team has plenty of leaders as well. “Allberry is a good leader. She’s not a vocal leader, but she leads by example,” the coach said. “Sam might be the key for us this year. She does whatever we need,

Wildcats excited for wrestling season Maxwell has full team, plenty of flexibility as it eyes State Dual Tournament berth By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
Maxwell may be one of the most experienced Class D wrestling teams in the state. The Wildcats return 10 starters, five state qualifiers and have definite goals set for the season. “We want to make the State Dual Tournament,” said head coach Ryan Jones of the inaugural State Dual Tournament to be held in Kearney. “We know to make it there, we need to be a good dual team as well as a good tournament team.” The Wildcats have 33 wrestlers out this season and will fill all 14 weight classes. Returning state qualifiers for Maxwell are Drew Riggs at 132 pounds, Ethan Lunkwitz at 138 pounds, Jaylon Sturdivant at 145 pounds, Jacob Whisenhunt at 152 pounds and Dylan Gage at 170 pounds. Riggs is a three-time state medalist, having finished third, fifth and third in the last three state tournaments. “Riggs is a threat,” Jones said. “He has to get a little better on his feet, but he’s working on it. He wrestles in a tough weight class, but he’s as good as anyone in the state. “He needs to believe in himself. Sometimes he over-analyzes things instead of just going out there and letting his talent take over. He has it in him to be a
state champion.” Sturdivant, a sophomore, qualified for state a year ago despite battling mono for most of the season. Gage suffered an overtime loss in the state tournament, a loss which kept him from placing. The number of wrestlers out for Maxwell makes things better in practice. “We’ve got a good wrestling room,” Jones said. ”The guys are all working hard and they are pulling for each other during tournaments and duals already, which is a plus.” The Wildcats opened the year going 4-1 in the Southwest Duals Tournament and followed that up with a championship in the Elwood Invitational. In that tournament, Maxwell placed 12 wrestlers, including three champions. Jones knows reaching the Dual State Tournament will mean winning at both duals and tournaments. “Duals are a chess match,” Jones said. “Winning can be as simple as a wrestler not getting turned over on his back during his match. “We have some flexibility with our roster, so we should be able to match up well with anyone.” Next Thursday, Maxwell hosts a dual with with Ralston Valley, Colo., and will host a quadran-

Lack of experience and depth will be a concern for the Maxwell Tigers as they begin the 2012-13 boys basketball season. But head coach Travis Klein plans to turn that into a strength by midseason. “For the most part the boys have been pushing pretty hard to improve and get better,” Klein said. “Daily we talk about giving more than the day before to improve. “I think as the season plays on and we get through a few games they will have a better understanding of the effort they need to give in practice to prepare better for games.” Key to the Tigers development will come from seniors Brandon Groseth
and Brandon Fletcher. “Both of them are great kids,” said Klein. “They have been contributors since they were sophomores. “Both have been great leaders vocally and by example this season showing the younger kids the ropes. Having these two on the court will be settling for me and for our young kids. “Brandon Fletcher will be our quarterback on the court and he will be expected to get us in the right spots offensively and defensively. “I think he is set to have a really good year this season. “Brandon Groseth is another returning starter for us. I can tell in these first few weeks of practice he has become more comfort-
able on the floor and is doing a lot of good things on the court. “He is a little undersized at 6-feet to play inside, but he makes up for it with quickness and is great at using his body to gain position.” Returning non-starter letterwinners for the Tigers, include seniors Josh Grace and Brady Rosenblad; juniors Zac Gregg and Bryson Keller and sophomore Jeremiah Keith. Heading into the opening weekend, Klein figured to learn a lot about his ball club. “We still have kids fighting for minutes,” Klein said. “It will be interesting to see who rises to the challenges that are ahead. We have made strides in practice as we learn to
compete and play the game.” Klein said his team will need to adjust their play to a very formidable schedule. “Offensively we will take what is given to us,” Klein said. “For us to be successful and competitive we need to defend and rebound the ball, limit teams to one shot a possession, along with crashing the boards offensively looking for 2nd chance opportunities. “Again we have a very challenging schedule and we will have to play at a high level to be competitive and win games. We will be playing some young kids this year and they are going to have to grow up fast and play at a high level.”
Everything new for Lady Wildcats New coaches, new players taking on challenge for Maxwell By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
With no starters and only two letterwinners returning from the 2011-12 Maxwell girls’ basketball squad, the Lady Wildcats will need to rely on youth to carry the load for the
working on the fundamentals of the game. “The girls are doing very well,” Armour said. “They are improving every day.” When most coaches look at youth as a weakness, Armour takes a different angle.
“Youth keeps the team excited,” the coach said. “And very energetic.” The two returning letterwinners for the Lady Wildcats this season are 5foot, 5-inch junior Anna Crane, and 5-6 sophomore Tracy Blake. “They bring toughness
and resilience to the whole team,” Armour said. Although the Lady Wildcats have begun the season 0-3, Armour is optimistic. “The girls have improved in every aspect of the game — every game,” said Armour.

Sailors riding in familiar waters with boys roster Coach must depend on his upperclassmen By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
A familiar challenge faces the Sutherland boys’ basketball program as the 2012-13 basketball season approaches. The Sailors will have a varsity roster headed up by only two seniors, four juniors and six freshmen. Head coach Dan Dyer will lean on his upperclassmen for some early direction. “Our young players are going to need to adjust to the speed and physicality of the high school game early on to help us be competitive,” said Dyer. “We will rely heavily on our upperclassman early in the season while our younger players acclimate themselves to varsity basketball.” With a small number of athletes and very little varsity experience, Dyer said it will be important to look at a lot of faces early. “We have 12 players on the team,” Dyer said. The rotation may be a little bit fluid early on until we see who steps up and forms a solid rotation. “We are a very young te4am that returns very little varsity experience. We will have to grow as a team right away with a tough schedule.” Dyer has two returning letter winners off the 2011-12 club, in Tyler Fear
and Calvin Carsten that ended the season with a 10-13 record. Both juniors, Fear is a 6-foot guard while Carsten is the top returning post player at 6-5. “Tyler is a good perimeter scorer and has done a good job working on his ability to finish around the basket,” Dyer said. “Calvin will be a good defender with his length and has a nice touch around the rim. We will need them to provide quality leadership throughout the season for us to improve towards sub-districts.” Junior Nathan Maxcy, and freshmen Brett Good and Kadin Copeland also will be counted on to contribute to the Sailors cause. “Good is becoming a steady perimeter shooter and provides us with some athleticism as a 9th grader,” said Dyer. “Maxcy is an excellent ball defender who works hard every possession. Copeland can knock down the perimeter shot if he gets into a good rhythm.” Dyer said the Sailors will look to run if the opportunity presents itself. “We will be primarily a controlled offense that will attack in transition when we have numbers,” the coach said. “We like to play defense in the half court trying to force our opponents to take contested perimeter shots.”

Lady Sailors poised for state tournament trip Ex-Maxwell coach leading Sutherland By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
Jason Gunderson made the trip down the old Lincoln Highway from Maxwell to Sutherland for the 2012-13 basketball season. Trading in his black and orange, Gunderson changed his wardrobe to the red and white of the Lady Sailors. Although he will be coaching a different team, the expectations remain the same. “Off and on the court I expect my players to be role models for the school,” Gunderson said. “In a smaller school system the younger students have an opportunity to see the players everyday. Because of this they need to be aware of their surroundings at all times and be a positive influence for the younger students. “On the court I expect the girls to play with a high level of energy, always hustling and working hard. A lot of the goals this year are based towards defense.” With a new coach directing a new team, Gunderson said practices have been busy, as a lot of new things have been added. “The girls have been working hard,” the coach said. “A lot of them have been staying after practice working on fundamentals. “They have high expectations for themselves as well as the team. We have a large number of girls out [27]. It took a couple of days for the younger players to realize what the expectations were in practice. Everyone is fitting in and working hard.”
Four starters return for the Lady Sailors. Senior shooting guard Joli Hopping returns as a four-year starter and a 5.6 points per game average. “From what I have seen so far from Joli — is she is a leader,” said Gunderson. “She has a positive attitude and is demanding of herself and players feed off of that. She has worked on her shooting and ball handling.” Junior’s Sam Staggs and Jalyne Schuster also started a season ago. Staggs averaged seven points a game with 3.9 rebounds as a two-year starter. Schuster, also a two-year starter, was the Lady Sailors leading scorer at 11.7 points a game. Kaley Stokey, the final starting returnee averaged five points a game from the point position. “Sam is a playmaker, she has the ability to create her own shot plus has a good outside shot,” Gunderson said of Staggs. “She will have to adjust this year and be able to play the 4 position. “Jalyne is the other playmaker on the team. Just like Sam she can create her own shot and shoot. “She is also a good passer and is working hard on defense to become a complete basketball player by improving her defense. “Kaley is a young point guard with a lot of energy. She always has a smile on her face and is a good ball handler and will have to run the team this year.” Looking to fill the final starting position will be senior Sam Kennedy. Kennedy is coming off a
great volleyball season and Gunderson has visions of her being a force in the post. “[Kennedy] is working hard to improve her fundamentals,” Gunderson said. “Sam plays good defense in the post and is a good rebounder.” Gunderson will look for help off the bench from a pair of seniors. Tawnie McConnell, injured the past two years is back to help at the guard position. Kristen Nelson, a utility player that helped off the bench last year, will be able to play several positions. Gunderson said, “Both Tawnie and Kristen could start if needed.” Look for the Lady Sailors to play an up-tempo style of basketball with a variety of different defenses to keep the game at a pace of their liking. Gunderson knows with their difficult schedule, the Lady Sailors will need to bring their “A-game” every night. “I believe that our schedule is tougher this year than it was last year,” said Gunderson. “The SPVA is going to be tough [nothing new there]. “We open up with four solid class C1 and C2 teams. We will be able to see right way what needs work. “We play a primarily class C schedule. I believe Gothenburg is going to be a surprise team this year and Ogallala has a new coach that knows how to win in Chris Mestl. We are going to have to be focused at all times.”
By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
It’s a mixed bag for Sutherland on the wrestling mats this season. Coach Ryan Mraz returns four state qualifiers, but also has five freshmen on the team. “That’s the way it is,” Mraz said. “We have some tough kids returning and we have some inexperienced wrestlers who are going to have to improve as the season progresses.” The returning state qualifiers are Collin Fleecs at 120 pounds, Chandle Tyan at 126 pounds, Colt Corbin at 132 pounds and Greg McKain at 145 pounds. McKain finished fifth last season at the state tournament. The Sailors have 13 wrestlers on the roster this season. “Right now. we’re trying to whip
them into shape,” Mraz said. “We have to get the kids down to the weights and keep working. “Everyone is working hard. We’re putting the younger guys in with some experienced ones to improve the learning curve as fast as we can.” The Sailors opened the season with a 3-2 dual record in the Southwest Duals Tournament and then finished second at the Bronco Invitational in Mullen. “We did well,” Mraz said. “We lost some we shouldn’t have lost, but some of the younger guys placed, which helped. “We were third in that tournament last year, so it was nice to improve this year.” Sutherland will host the annual Sutherland Invite on Dec. 15 and will also host a Class D District Tournament at the end of the season.

Knights hoping chemistry is right for successful run
Coach wants team who pulls for each other, competes hard in practice, games By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
The most important games for the North Platte Community College men’s basketball team are coming up. The Knights are 7-2 on the season and will play at Southeast today, at Central on Sunday and host Northwest Kansas Tech on Dec. 15. “These games are very important,” said NPCC head coach Kevin O’Connor. “I thought we were right where we needed to be when we beat Casper at Northeastern, but the next night we lost to Air Force Prep. “That was the toughest loss of the season. We didn’t have any energy, any focus. We were flat just 24 hours after the biggest win of the season.” O’Connor knows he has one of the toughest jobs in coaching. The Knights head coach takes freshmen and sophomores for two years and tries to mold them into players, a team and responsible men. “It’s hard,” O’Connor admitted. “It’s hard to create chemistry in a team.
“They get here, meet one another and then have to play together. As the team practices, it’s important that they pull together, rally around one another, play hard, be competitive, but be together. “It doesn’t always happen.” Three years ago, after the Knights made the national tournament, O’Connor brought together a team that was filled with talent. However, the team never developed chemistry and fell apart. “That was so disappointing,” O’Connor said. “This team, it has developed some chemistry. They are coming together, but they still have much to learn. “It’s why they lost one day after getting their biggest win. They have to learn how to sustain that energy on the back end of back-to-back days. “It should come. If we finish the preholiday break the way we should, I’ll be looking forward to the second half of the season. This team can get better, can grow. I’m anxious to see where we end up, but I believe it will be close to where we want it to be.”

Sometimes, help comes from out of the blue. North Platte Community College women’s head coach Richard Thurin was at home last summer when he received a call. “It was from Paige Hasty’s mother,” Thurin said. “She explained Paige was going to be attending NPCC and asked if I wanted to talk with her daughter. “I said yes and we met. I signed her to play that day.” Hasty played high school basketball at Holdrege and went on to sign to play with Doane after high school. “She played four games there,” Thurin said. “She
hurt her knee and they shut her down. “Her sister was going to school here and her grandparents live in Elsie, so she decided she wanted to come to school at North Platte.” No one is sure if Hasty intended to play basketball before her mother contacted Thurin. Now, everyone connected with the Lady Knights is glad she did. “Paige is a good basketball player and a good leader,” Thurin said. “She can score and was our leading scorer through much of the early season. “But she’s also a smart basketball player. She can pass out of the high post and makes sure people are in the right positions.” While Hasty is a sopho-
more, the Lady Knights are hoping she will get another year of eligibility at NPCC. “She qualifies for a red shirt,” Thurin said. “We just have to have Doane submit the paperwork before we do.” Thurin said Hasty’s time with Doane — and playing for Holdrege, one of the area’s better prep programs — allowed her to come in and be a leader from the start. “We needed that,” the coach said. “We didn’t return anyone from last year’s team, so we needed someone who was going to come in and be that leader for us.” The Lady Knights are 65 on the season and will play at Southeast and Central today and Sunday.

Panthers boys starting over Hershey loses top 7 players from year ago By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
Things are new for the Hershey Panthers. Head coach Dustin Jorgenson has a whole new crew playing basketball for him this season. “We lost seven seniors and all five starters,” Jorgenson said. “With so many new faces on the court, we’re taking things one day at a time, just trying to get better each day and be where we want to be by the end of the season.” Dylan Johnson and Josh Connell are the two most experienced Panthers returning for this season. “We’ve got a lot of kids,” Jorgenson said. “We can be a pretty physical team and we can play inside. “With a lot of depth, we can play quite a few. It all comes down to how the season goes, how the kids grow, how we improve and where we are at come subdistrict time.” Jorgenson looks at St. Pat’s, Chase
County and Perkins County as tough SPVA teams. “St. Pat’s is loaded again,” Jorgenson said. “Chase County has most of their team back and Perkins County, when they get healthy, will be a very tough team. “This conference is always loaded. On any night one of the conference teams can beat the other. It’s always a tough conference tournament and a tough conference.” Hershey will see more of St. Pat’s than it used to. The Panthers have dropped into Class C2 this season and will be in the same sub-district as the Irish. “It doesn’t matter where we’re at,” Jorgenson said. “We have to worry about ourselves first. We have so much we need to improve on before we worry too much about other teams. “We will keep working hard, keep improving and work being as good as we can be by the time the postseason rolls around.”

Hershey’s Daynlee Miller goes up for a shot against Minden during last year’s State Basketball Tournament. Miller returns with a host of Lady Panthers and the team will be seeking a second straight trip to state.
There’s a big difference between Arizona and Nebraska. Just ask Eric Sokol, the new head coach for the Hershey Panthers wrestling team. Sokol, who also helps coach football, moved to the area over the summer. “One of the biggest differences is in the numbers,” Sokol said. “In Arizona, we’d have 45 to 50 kids out for wrestling. “Here I have 12. The hardest thing is getting them close enough in weight to practice.” While the numbers may be smaller, Sokol has enjoyed working with Hershey students. “The kids are tough,” the coach said. “We have some good athletes with some talent. Nebraska does a good job of matching you up with equal opponents, so we’re not out of our league. “One of the disadvantages I have, is I didn’t spend time with them over the summer, so they’re spread out a little bit on where they are on technique. “We have to spend time refining
Hershey’s hopes big sports@nptelegraph.com
The Hershey Lady Panthers got a taste of the State Basketball Tournament last year. Now, they want to return. Hershey is returning most of their roster from a year ago and hopes that experience will carry them into another state tournament run. “We’re excited about the season,” said Hershey head coach Jeremy Thomas. “We have a lot of depth and a lot of returning players.” The Lady Panthers return five starters from a year ago. Back are Maddie Seamann, Maegan Hiatt, Daynlee Miller, Tayler Baker and Brook Frederick. Frederick returns after missing all but one game last year after suffering an
injury. She has been called a tenacious defender by Thomas and other area coaches. Other returning players for Hershey are Jenna Young, Brooke Munsen, Bobbi Brannon, Mariah DaMaude and Aliesha Dethlefs. Two newcomers who may help this season are Ryce Taylor and freshman Taylor Mustian. Hershey is loaded with quick, smaller players, which helps as they play a full-court pressing defense. “That’s our style,” said Thomas. “We like to play pressure defense and we get after it all game long.” One of the biggest differences for the Lady Panthers is the move to Class C2 this season. That puts them in the same sub-district as archrival St. Pat’s.
Thomas hopes there is a scenario where both teams can advance in postseason. “We have a tough schedule,” Thomas said. “If we take care of business and St. Pat’s does as well, which you know they will, maybe what happened in volleyball where both teams made state, can happen again in basketball.” Thomas knows he will see the Lady Irish many times this year, starting today at home. “We will play them at home and at their place,” Thomas said. “Then there is the SPVA Conference Tournament and in the sub-district tournament. “We want to play well against everyone, but if we can hold our own against St. Pat’s, well, we will be right where we want to be.”

skills.” Despite the setback, the low numbers allow the Panthers coaching staff to work with the wrestlers more individually. “It’s great for a coaching aspect,” Sokol said. “Each of the kids has different skills and likes and dislikes. “The smaller numbers allow me to get to know the kids better, know whether they like takedowns or to wrestle defensively. These are things that would take a while to figure out in a larger setting.” With varying degrees of experience on the varsity, Sokol said he hasn’t set a team goal. “My approach is to work with each of these guys individually,” he said. “We need to do what we can to get these wrestlers to the state tournament. “We don’t have a lot of numbers, but we have tons of talent and toughness. Wrestling and football both can be measured in talent and toughness. Our wrestlers have both, and as coaches, we need to help them use both to their ability and make the state tournament.”

Plenty of weapons still in Brady Lady Eagles return several starters for girls season By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
Brady Lady Eagles basketball coach Lance Arterburn must not be able to relate to Old Mother Hubbard — because when he goes to his cupboard — all is OK. A year after Brady posted a 20-2 record, losing a semifinal sub-district match-up to 22-2 Ansley, Arterburn returns 10 girls with varsity experience and also depth at the post position. “I think that will allow us to play more relaxed and handle the tighter situations a little better,” Arterburn said. “We will substitute more this year and should be able to put more pressure on teams with our depth.” The Lady Eagles return three
starters in Brittney Christopherson, Dakota Terry and transfer student Madison Elliott from Maxwell. “Madison and Dakota are almost identical with what they do for us,” said Arterburn. “Both are very physical down low. “They are very smart and work extremely hard at the post. They might not be the biggest, but they handle pressure very well. Both can take care of business. “We will rely on Brittney this year to put points up from the outside for us.” Those three and returning letterwinners Valerie Most, Alexis Mann, Molly Hannon, Sydney Widick, Carissa Rayburn, Josie Palmer and Autumn Hild will carry the bulk of
the load for the Lady Eagles. “Those three seniors work very hard,” Arterburn said. “The seniors and the bunch of juniors have a very hard work ethic. They know what we need to do. “It is the juniors goal, as with the rest of the team, to make sure our seniors go out and make our goal [of going to state].” Arterburn said his team will still try to push the ball up the floor, but this year under control. “We need to be smart when not to push,” said the coach. “In the past we only had one gear. We need to realize when to slow down to hold down on the turnovers. We want to play fast — just a smarter fast.”
Second year the charm for Eagles? Jacobs back for second season as Brady boys hoops By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
David Jacobs begins his second year at the helm of the Brady Eagles basketball program during the 2012-13 season. He led the Eagles to a 19-4 record a season ago — falling just short of a trip to state at Lincoln. Jacobs said his team is still flying high from the successful season. “After going 19-4 our confidence level is high and the effort put forth by our kids in the preseason has been great,” Jacobs
said. “So I think that’s been a positive for us. “Being my second year has helped a lot because the kids know what to expect and we have been able to focus a little more on some details.” The Eagles return only two starters in Zach Mann and Bryley Roper. Both will be counted on heavily. “Zach and Bryley both played a lot minutes last year and are very experienced ball players,” said Jacobs. “They both bring great leadership ability and are good teammates.
“Zach was our second leading scorer last year and he has good speed and instincts, and Bryley is a really good ball handler and is very quick. He needs to get a little more aggressive this year and do a little more scoring for us.” Senior Michael Neiman will also be called upon to help the Eagles. “Michael is another senior letter winner who has been showing good leadership and working hard in practice,” Jacobs said. A grueling schedule awaits the Eagles in their
preparation for the season. “We start off with Wauneta-Palisade and they are always a tough, well coached team,” said Jacobs. It really doesn’t get any easier as we move to our Christmas break. “We have Paxton, Cody Kilgore, Hitchcock County, Loomis, and then South Loup, SMC and Maxwell in the Maxwell Booster Club Tournament. “So I think we will find plenty of challenges, and know a lot more about ourselves going into Christmas break.”
Prep athletes use summer to get better. Wallace hopes it has done enough to turn things around this season. “We played about 30 games over the summer,” said Wallace boys basketball coach Joe Hesse. “We believe it has made us better.” The Wildcats went 8-12 last season and, according to Hesse, lost every way possible. “We lost five or six games by less than four points,” the coach said.”We lost every way there is. “We got back our top seven players, so hopefully, we learned last year what it takes to win.” All five starters, Landon Swedberg, Taylor Doell, Josh Grauerholz, John Marquart and Lane Scott, return. Also returning are Jose Arvizo and Shane Anders. “We have to improve our shooting,” Hesse said.”We play pretty good defense, but we aren’t going to win too many games 1-0. “Offensively, we are quick. Teams can’t play man against us or we’ll do well.” Hesse calls Swedberg the team’s best player. “He can do it all,” Hesse said. “He scores, rebounds, handles the ball. He’s our best player.” Although the Wildcats aren’t real tall — Grauerholz is the team’s tallest player at 6-1 — they have started the season 2-0 and feel they are going to do well this season. “We won four or five games in a row at the end of the season last year,” Hesse said. “We got some confidence and grew with our play over the summer. “We are going to be tough this season and hopefully improve more as the season goes on.”
Lady Wildcats’ new coach not new to courts Ex-official is now coaching By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
A new coach has taken over for the Lady Wildcats of Wallace, but he’s not new to a basketball court. Shannon Messersmith, who was an official for years, is in his first season as the girls basketball coach at Wallace. “The girls are adjusting well to the changes,” Messersmith said. “We’ve got a new system and things are going good. “I can’t say enough about the girls. They have a great work ethic and they work really hard in practice.” According to Messersmith, the Lady Wildcats have a good combination of size and quickness, which make them tough. The coach lists Katelyn Melton, Paige Aylward. Morgan Messersmith, Haley Stpr, and Abbey Rohde as impact players for his team. “We are looking forward to having a successful season,” Messersmith said. “I’m excited about our experience and depth.” Depth is something the Lady Wildcats have. The roster has 16 girls, including four seniors. “Not only do we have depth, we have good leaders,” Messersmith said. “We have what we need for a good season after we get the new system running and the girls are just playing and not thinking too much.”

pleasant surprises. “The three that returned from last year have been very accepting of those that have moved up. They know what [last years JV] bring in terms of the game and ability. “Obviously the [returning starters] have a jump on the others, having been there before. However we have multisport athletes on our team and many of them have competed at the varsity level in the fall or spring competition.” Woodhead, beginning his 11th season as head coach, will look to senior Maggie Bianco and junior Madalynn Doughty to help shore up the starting lineup. “Maggie is a tough competitor, and as a senior is providing leadership, as are Kylie and Ashten which helps set the tone for practice,” the coach said. “She is a complete team player. “Madalynn is a fireball. What she lacks in pure size she makes up in effort and heart. She is doing a nice job handling the ball and getting us set up in the half court.” Because of the Lady Bulldogs youth, Woodhead said it is important to get off to a good start. “As young as we are, I think it is extremely important to experience success early,” said Woodhead. “Success breeds success. “I believe playing together includes being supportive of one another whether they are on the floor or on the bench, blending their strengths and accepting their roles as team members. “With all things being equal with the teams we compete against, playing together will take them a long way. I believe we are progressing in the right direction in playing as a team.”

With only three seniors on the North Platte Lady Bulldogs roster at the beginning of the 2012-13 season, head coach Mark Woodhead will be looking for some underclassmen to step up and help the ranks. An early season jamboree game against Sidney in the Nebraska Hall of Fame series might have been just what the doctor ordered. “For those that did not have a lot of time in varsity games [last year],” said Woodhead, “it allowed them to get a feel for the speed and intensity of the game at the varsity level. You just can’t replicate that in practice.” Although the Lady Bulldogs are short on varsity experience, Woodhead said his team is joined by a very successful junior varsity team. “The JV wins do not always translate into varsity wins, however our JV team played at a high level throughout their season last year and had chemistry that led to their success,” Woodhead said. “I believe that has carried over to this year in practice, and our [Hall of Fame] game.” Returning starters for North Platte are seniors Ashten Hernandez and Kylie Wroot. Hernandez, the Lady Bulldogs leading scorer a year ago, stands in at 6 foot and will take up residence in the lane. Wroot (5-11) gives Hernandez support in the paint. Sophomore Kaitlynn Harvey will be starting for her second successive year. Harvey, at 5-7, will be called upon for some outside offense. “At this point I believe we could start any of our top six or seven,” Woodhead said. “They have played well in practice, and there have been some very

Bulldogs ready to bring experience to the court North Platte boys returning four starters By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
North Platte boys basketball coach Matt Kaminski is looking forward to bringing back four starters off the 2011-12 team that went 8-14 in a tough Class A division. Kaminski, in his second year as the Bulldogs head coach, feels the year’s experience will be advantageous. “I think just the overall understanding and expectations of our players, coaches, and what we are trying to accomplish is much improved from a year ago,” Kaminski said. “We feel that will lead to positives across the board. “Our kids love playing the game and love competing. “We feel the way we competed last season combined with the experience will play a huge part in our ability to be successful in close games.” The Bulldogs will be blessed with size and skilled perimeter shooters. A solid inside/out combination. “Each and every day the coaches are working hard to develop our players,” the coach said. “I think we will be as athletic as most of the teams we play. We have strong versatile posts and perimeter guys that can create for each other and themselves. We can
give opponents match up problems in different ways. “Teams will try to get us in foul trouble so we will need to be prepared to avoid those issues, both mentally and physically. Shooting better from the free throw line this season is on our minds. That was a thorn for us last year.” Back to help the Bulldogs cause will be seniors Jack Kenny and Luke Wright. Kenny, a 5-foot, 8inch guard, will be relied on to run the team from the point. “Jack is a poised and skilled player that can create plays and control the tempo,” Kaminski said. “He’s taking more command of directing the team this season.” Wright, at 6-3, brings a multiple of talents to the table. “Luke is an intense and emotional player,” said Kaminski. He’s strong inside and a good passer for a big man. His experience and leadership is valuable to our team.” The tallest member of the team is junior Drew Callaghan. Kaminski feels a summer filled with basketball will help the twoyear starter. “Drew has impressive all around ability for a 6-7 player that our team will rely heavily on, night in and night out,” Kaminski said. “He’s played against

top-notch competition over the summer and his improvement is evident. “He’s more aggressive, stronger, and his presence as a shot blocker and rebounder will be felt. He has passion for the game and will continue to be a leader for us.” Kaminski also said junior Kade Erickson is a very solid perimeter player that is a threat to score 20 any night. Also counted on to help are junior Bradey Anderson and sophomore Shane Mauch. “Bradey is much improved and has the ability to be an incredible defender, and will be counted on to make plays for us, especially on the defensive end,” said Kaminski. “And Shane understands the game and is a well-rounded player that will only get better and better as the season goes. We will need him to create offense for us with his shooting and passing ability. “I think most people understand that our schedule, year in and year out, is demanding with our school size and location in Class A,” said Kaminski. “We are smart enough to understand that we can beat any team on our schedule and any team can beat us. We need to be mentally prepared for every game we enter.”

low,” Hall said. “All of them are upper classmen and know what to expect at practices as well as at tournaments. “They understand that the season is long and there will be some up and downs, but you need to stay focused and work at getting better each week.” Hall said the Bulldogs are two deep at every weight class and even deeper at some weights. “Depth is very important in any sport,” said the coach. “With depth in all weight classes, we have more competition in the wrestling room. “If you have to compete for your spot throughout the year, you will become tougher mentally as well as get more mat time. It will make everyone better.” The Bulldogs won’t have to go far for a little competition. Hall said area teams such as Grand Island, Kearney, Cozad and Lexington should test the North Platte wrestlers. Competition that should help the Bulldogs prepare for Conference, District and State. “I think it’s important to be able to see good competition throughout the season,” Hall said. “You’re able to find out your strengths and weaknesses in a hurry and have a chance to get them corrected before the end of the season. “We will be tested early at the Kearney invite with Grand Island, Kearney and Lincoln Southwest of the preseason top ten teams and many good individuals.” The Bulldogs have several weight classes that lack varsity experience, but Hall expects that will get better as the season goes on. “I’m excited to see how some of the first year varsity wrestlers are able to compete and watch them learn and improve as the season progresses,” said Hall. “I believe everyone on the team can do great things if they decide to put in the effort on a daily basis. “It doesn’t have to be just our varsity wrestlers. We will have some very good wrestlers on the JV team and expect them to compete well at all of their meets.”
The North Platte wrestling squad returns plenty of experience and leadership from their 2011-12 season, meaning Bulldogs fans should experience another successful year. North Platte finished third at the Nebraska State Wrestling Meet in Omaha last February and return nine starters, four whom brought home state medals. Dale Hall, beginning his fourth year as head Bulldogs wrestling coach, is optimistic of the upcoming season. “The success we had last year makes it easier to set the bar high for us again this year,” Hall said. “We know that we’re capable of doing well at the meets and expect that of ourselves. “However, we need to realize that we won’t be able to sneak up on anybody this year and will get everyone’s best shot.” The Bulldogs have over 50 athletes out for wrestling. Hall said a freshman class of 21 has the potential to be a very good class in the future. “I think our success that we had last year has helped get some new kids to at least give it a try,” said Hall. “I also believe it is important to talk to kids — recruit at your own high school. “If they say no to me about wrestling or aren’t sure about trying it, I try to have some of their peers encourage them. I want kids who are willing to work hard, be willing to be coached, and commit to the sport of wrestling during the season.” Leading the charges for the Bulldogs will be two-time state medalist Grant Holscher. Joining Holscher are medalists Jonah Navarette, Paul Kraye and Jason Lieneman. Other starters returning include Aaron Houser, Colton Thompson, Lane Carpenter, Levi Thomlison and Shane Roblee. “Our nine returnees from last years team bring experience and some great leadership for the other wrestlers to fol-

Leadership key to North Platte in water Bulldogs returning several to swimming, diving teams By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com

Leadership is a key ingredient when talking about the North Platte swimming and diving teams this winter. Coach Jon Beggs, in his thirtieth year at North Platte High School, believes this group of seniors is ready to deliver. Seniors taking their turn on the 2012-13 team are Kathleen Cullinan, Shaylee Guethlein, Kim Hall, Jackie Paloucek, Cassie Mosel, Tyler and Charlie Halligan, Louie Harper, Erik Davis, Zach Saner and Matthew Walsh. “Leadership is coming from a solid group of sen-
iors who want to work toward team success,” said Beggs. “Several of those seniors have put in 3-4 years and believe that it is their turn to lead the team to success.” Numbers are another area that will help the Bulldogs. Currently there are a total of 46 out for the team — 27 girls and 19 boys. “With the larger numbers we will be able to develop more depth in several events as the season progresses,” Beggs said. “We are beginning to develop several individuals who are going to help us in the 50 and 100 free which will help us on the 200 and 400 free relays as well as the individual events. NICKNAME: Raiders CONFERENCE: RPAC CLASSIFICATION: D2 HEAD COACH: Steven Gleisberg PLAYER TO WATCH: Sage Schmidt; Marcus Florom TEAM STRENGTH: Much of our success will be around AllState candidate Lucas Gleisberg.
The senior is a three year starter and three year All conference performer. Several colleges around the Midwest are interested in him. Brendan Johnson will play post, but has the ability to knock down three pointers, plus being a very good free throw shooter. Two other potential starters are a pair of sophomores in Cody Aspenleiter and Chase Barthel. These two are very athletic and quick and will need to contribute if we are going to be successful. TEAM WEAKNESS: Obviously lack of depth. Losing Garey hurts a ton because he was a two-year starter, great passer and shooter. We are hoping that Towne will be back, along with Florom. We lack height, but hope to rely on team quickness. We will need underclassmen to step up. SEASON OUTLOOK: We hope to be competitive again this season. Due to several football injuries we will be challenged. We lost 2nd Team All Conference player Riley Garey (ACL), starter Keith Towne (MCL), and key sub Marcus Florom (broken hand). RETURNING LETTER WINNERS: Lucas Gleisberg; Brendan Johnson; Keith Towne; Cody Aspenleiter; Chas Barthel COMMENTS: Finally we play a competitive schedule with over half of our game comprising of D1 or C2 schools. We are hoping to challenge for conference title, but will be tough, and Arapahoe has another foreign exchange student (third foreign exchange student in five years!) which makes them the favorite.
