New mixes with experience for North Platte Several freshmen expected to blend with returning Lady Bulldogs to lead track team By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
North Platte head coach Dennis Fornander will have a good mixture of experience and youth on his 2013 Lady Bulldogs track squad. Fourteen letter winners from 2012 will strive to lead the North Platte High girls as the track season begins. “We have some good returning athletes and it looks like we’ve picked up some sophomores and freshmen that haven’t been with us before that are going to help us,” Fornander said. “We’re looking for some good things from the younger kids as well.”
An important cog in the Lady Bulldogs success is two-time Class A defending state champion in the pole vault, Allexis Menghini. Menghini has already added a pair of wins to her total this season, winning the UNK Invite pole vault competition at 11-0 and 16-09.5 in the long jump. Menghini signed earlier this year to compete for the Big Red of Nebraska on a track scholarship. “She looks like she is going to be one of the top pole vaulters as well as long jumpers at most the meets we go to — expectations are high there,” Fornander said. “She definitely has the potential
to win every time she vaults. “Allexis went out the first meet and went 16-09.5 in the long jump so she’ll be up in the 17s pretty quick — that looks good. We also have some young girls in the long jump that will push her too. “We have some freshmen and sophomores who are already jumping in the high 15s. It looks like they will progress, so it looks like the long jump will be a strength and the vault will be a strength for us.” Other returning letter winners include Libby Burrows, Kayla Dotson, Rikki Drews, Audrey Gay, Hannah Hayes, Tessa Howitt, Rachel Kosmacek, Tori
Kurth, Catelyn Lee, McKenna Miller, Molly Morrison, Kathryn Schwartzkopf and Kaylnn Stoner. A bright spot for the Lady Bulldogs this past week was the competition of freshman Madison Raska. Raska finished third at UNK in the 55-meter dash. “She went out in the first meet and competed against pretty good competition and got third, so that’s a good showing,” said Fornander. “We had some other freshmen close also. “Kaitlynn Harvey placed in the long jump and she will also be hurdling. She took a fall this week so we didn’t get to see her finish. She’ll be running the 100-
meter hurdles and looks like she should do some things there. “Junior Catelyn Lee is an upperclassman in the hurdles and she also placed in the triple jump this last week.” Fornander said the Lady Bulldogs have some other young girls and also some new girls to North Platte High School that just moved in that look like they’ll add strength in the shot and discus. “Tessa Howitt is back in the weights for us,” said Fornander. “And freshman Hope Wilke placed in the shot put in the first meet so that was great to see. Hopefully we’ll develop some strength there also.”
Bulldogs have large numbers, good leaders Health a concern as season progresses for North Platte By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
If numbers are any indication, the North Platte boy’s track team is headed in the right direction. The Bulldogs currently have 91 athletes out, a number that pleases Bulldogs’ head coach Mike McGuire. McGuire is currently in his 13th year as head coach for the Bulldogs. “We’re really happy with that,” McGuire said of the number of athletes. “That’s a good number to start with. I feel like they are working pretty hard and we’re off to a good start.” McGuire looks at the Bulldogs depth as a real strength for the squad. “I think we have some great senior leadership,” the coach said. “With 91 guys out, obviously there should be a lot of depth there in certain places also.” Leading the way for the Bulldogs are three returning state qualifiers and several other impact athletes. Junior Wyatt McGuire returns from an eighth-place finish in the 3200-meter run in 2012 and also seniors Marcus Miller and Joe Godfrey off the 4X800 meter relay. Caleb Dodge, a senior, returns in both hurdle events and both horizontal jumps. Junior Evan Lamphear has a career best 13-feet, 09-inch height in the pole vault. “Caleb has been a good athlete for us in the past,” said McGuire. “We just have to keep him healthy and keep him going. “Evan has shown a lot of promise in the early season along with Jacob Zimbelman [a sophomore sprinter and jumper]. Other returning letterwinners are seniors Marcos Avalos, Tom Beckmann, Ace Haws and Luke Wright. Juniors are Drew Callaghan, Brandon Edwards, Dale Ragle, Gilbert Seck and Alec Wesslund. Jordan Wordekemper is one of two sophomore letterwinners along with Zimbelman. McGuire said that six of the top-10 point scorers are back from the 2012 season, but they are missing some quality athletes. “We keep track of individual point scorers,” McGuire said. “We are obviously missing a couple of heavy hitters in Trevor Schramm who is running for the University of Nebraska-Kearney, Ben Montgomery is running at Concordia University and also Mateo Wilcox has moved on to greener pastures.” McGuire feels that development of the athletes will be key to the outcomes at meets. “You want to have a well-rounded team all across the board,” said McGuire. “There are probably a couple spots where we don’t have a lot of experience coming back, but we think we just have some guys that need to be developed.” The Bulldogs opened their season with a fourthplace finish at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Indoor Invitational.

Lady ’Dogs look for more success North Platte hoping to build on state tournament berth By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
The 2013 version of the North Platte High School girl’s soccer squad is coming off what head coach Sarah Kaminski calls a wonderful season — one that could propel them into this years season. “Part of what they bring with them is they know what it feels like and looks like to work hard,” Kaminski said. “They know how team unity and team chemistry really affects your performance. “Thee girls have a great picture of what overall teamwork looks like and how important that is to the game. They bring a lot of skill, and work with each other really well.” The 2012 team finished the season with a 14-4 record and a state tournament berth. The Lady Bulldogs fell 20 to Lincoln Southeast in the opening round. The Lady Knights lost 1-0 in the championship game to Omaha Marion. With past success the Lady Bulldogs have enjoyed, Kaminski still leaves little reminders during practice. “I remind them every day to not leave practice with any regrets,” Kaminski said, “and we also talk a lot about it’s not only your job to make yourself better, but a true team helps make each other better.
“The harder you push each other in practice, the better your teammates are going to be for the game.” Kaminski will rely heavily on her four returning seniors to continue their recent success. “They all have a lot of varsity experience,” Kaminski said of her seniors. “Jackie Paloucek comes back in goal. She had the pleasure of playing with that tough defensive unit we ended the season with last season. “Jackie knows what it needs to look like. Her leadership abilities have improved in the last year and she is ok putting herself in that leadership role.” Anna Allberry is the only Lady Bulldog back from a solid defensive unit from a year ago. “She’s really stepped up and is playing a different defensive position this year,” Kaminski said. “She is really the leader back there in that unit. “Anna understands her role and looks even quicker that last year so I’m excited to see what she does in the back. “Maggie Bianco is just an all around wonderful athlete. She brings leadership with her voice on the field. “Maggie is aggressive, fast and quick to the ball. She is one of the
girls we can put basically anywhere we need to put her and she will not only hold her own but will be a standout at that spot. “Kaysee Lewis comes back and has played forward all four years. She comes back with speed, touches to the ball and she will work well with whomever she has in the front.” Other returning starters include juniors Marisa Martinez, Taylor Banark and Madalynn Doughty. Donna Henne, a junior, and sophomore Abby Stark were letter winners in 2012. Kaminski teaches math at the high school, but chemistry always seems to be on her mind. “We talk a lot about how the girls are all puzzle pieces out there and they really have to fit together,” Kaminski said. “You have to mesh together. “One of the things we work on is communication with each other, how you work and play together and how you know each others ins-andouts — team chemistry. “Not only that, but how you build a relationship with the people you play with. I feel like relationship is half your battle. You need girls trusting in each other and believing in each other. “They do a good job of developing those relationships.”

Bulldogs soccer team has lots of experience Nine seniors returning for North Platte, but chemistry and cohesion are needed By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
The North Platte boy’s soccer team has plenty of depth as the Bulldogs return nine seniors for the 2013 season. “Most of those players have played soccer for me the last four years,” said North Platte coach Mary Elmshauser. “What we need to work on is more team cohesion. “Right now they’re jockeying for starting positions because we have a nice number of players. They really need to show in each and every practice who should be stepping out there as those eleven starters on the
field.” Returning starters for the Bulldogs are senior midfielders Jack Kenny, Brandon Hedgecock, and Levi Thomlinson. Tanner Malmkar and Chris Larsen return at fullback. Malmkar is a junior and Larsen a senior. Other possible impact players are senior Jonah Navarrette and juniors Brady Mason and Zach Creager. “Dylan Mlady [a senior] and Jonah missed their junior year but what they bring back is their speed, athleticism and their hard work ethics,” Elmshauser said. “Dylan is doing a good job this year and Jon-
ah makes things happen. He can open up the back line of defenders so we’re really counting on him for his touch.” Elmshauser said senior Paul Kraye hasn’t played at the high school level until this year. “He’s been a wrestler for the last four years. “He’s very determined and brings speed at the stopper position. “Jack is back this year where he brings speed and hard shots. He brings good team chemistry along with Brandon.. Brandon has been recruited at the college level to use as a midfielder because he can turn around balls. “He has a really smart field
sense and makes those connecting foot-to-foot passes. We will really rely a lot on Brandon this year. “Junior Brady Mason was promoted to a varsity level player a year ago because we needed extra players,” said the coach. “Brady brings speed and determination. Junior Zach Creager has an excellent cross and a lot of speed out there at the wing position.” Elmshauser said that along with the high expectations she has for her team, a tough Class A schedule will test her squad. “The competition on our schedule is very difficult to say the least,” Elmshauser said.
“Some of the schools are known for their soccer athletes and they just do that one sport. We have a lot of double or triple athletes and will have our hands full. “I really think with this group if they are really determined, work hard and put out the extra effort can come away with being district champs. “That’s our goal. The seniors decided that would be their goal. Take every game as a learning opportunity to get better. “We just need to make sure we put those balls in the corner of the net. “If you’re going to win you have to get the goals.”
Bulldogs ready for return to area golf links Schartz, Bargell leaders for North Platte boys golf team By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
North Platte head golf coach, Jim Orcutt, is very positive about the upcoming season. The Bulldogs return five letter winners that have also improved their game, and with that, a renewed confidence for the game of golf. “It gives us a little bit more confidence,” said Orcutt. “They aren’t shaking in their boots not knowing what to expect. They pretty much know how a meet is run and what all the background preparation is necessary to get ready. “We’ve just been stressing fundamentals and trying to remind them of different things that cause certain actions and what they can do to correct them.” Matt Schartz and Cameron Bargell will give the Bulldogs state tournament experience and Orcutt hopes that will help his team be more competitive in 2013. “Cameron is by far our best player on the team and has been all four years of his high school career,” said Orcutt. “The amount of work Cameron puts in during the summer time definitely pays off with experience under a wide variety of pressure situations.” Although Bargell missed out on a state appearance a year ago after qualifying in 2011, he might have returned with a renewed interest. “It was devastating to everyone and shocking,” Orcutt said. “It’s behind him, he’ll move on and maybe it adds a little more drive and purpose to his game this year. “He has a level head, taking one shot at a time and trying to do the best he can with each shot.” Schartz was North Platte’s only state participant last season and looks for more success as the year progresses. “Matt is more confident this year — more at ease,” Orcutt said. “He played a really good round in the district last year on a very tough course. “He has a little shoulder issue but it doesn’t bother him much as far as his golf swing is concerned. He wants to play and do his best and lately he’s been playing pretty well.” Two juniors have also stepped their game up and have been proving in practice they are ready for the competition. “Both Braedon [Nielsen] and Troy [Hlavaty] have improved their game quite a bit since last year,” the coach said. “To some degree, getting older makes a persons game a little bit better when you’re that age. “Braedon got some new golf clubs and that maybe made him practice a little bit more. He’s been very consistent at practice and Troy’s swing has improved and his tempo has improved. They both just really like the game of golf and it shows.” Keaton Hope and Grayson Flanders lettered in 2012 and also return to help the Bulldogs cause. “This team, depth wise, could be one of the better teams I’ve coached,” Orcutt said. “They have the potential, all five, six or seven players have the potential of breaking 80. My job I guess is, trying to get them to do that all on the same day at the right time of the season. “I just hope that early on in the season they have some success and they use that success to build on it for later in the season.”

Numbers up for North Platte tennis Returning Lady Bulldogs should make team competitive By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
Thirty-one girls have taken to the courts at Cody Park for the North Platte High School tennis team. Coach Dale Hall is pleased to see so many girls interested in taking part in a great lifetime sport. “It’s great to see the numbers that we have,” Hall said. “I think we have some depth in our No. five-six [girls] through our No. 15-16 with some experience and quality. “It’s nice to see them all sticking with it and working hard with the underclassmen.” Hall believes with the return of five of his top six players from a
year ago and the quality underclassmen to push for varsity positions, the Lady Bulldogs should be competitive at most meets. Returning starters for the Lady Bulldogs are Jenae States, Kim Hall, Josha Gifford, Megan Stokey and Alyssa Cole. “We have some strong upper-class players who are providing good leadership and solid technique for the younger players to follow,” Hall said. “Right now it looks like Jenae will be our No. 1 singles player and Kim will be our No. 2. “However the No. 1 and 2 doubles, we have a lot of girls that will be competing for those spots and I think the competition will make them all that much better.
“Josha, Lauren Wagner, Alyssa, Megan and Courtney Ruda will all be in there battling it out for a position.” Other possible impact players for the Lady Bulldogs are Kristen Wullschleger, Molly Spelts, Alli Stoppkotte, Maddie Krull, Karnie Dickinson and Maci Rein-Lake. Hall is encouraged by the attitude and work ethic of his 2013 squad. “The girls are coming regularly to practice,” the coach said. “They’re doing the things we want them to be doing. “About the only thing I can complain about is the weather not cooperating and not allowing us to get through as much as we would have liked to.”
Maxwell squads ready for track Lady ’Cats hope to gain experience; ’Cats look to stay healthy By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
MAXWELL — The Maxwell Wildcats and Lady Wildcats were set to open their young track season at the St. Pat’s Invite on Saturday at the Hershey High School track. Head girl’s coach Ryan Jones said his team could be better than the last few years with hard work and if his team can stay away from injuries. “We’ve got some talent,” Jones said. “So far everybody has been working real hard which is nice to see. They are coming off of basketball season where I think they worked hard as well. “Right now everything has been positive and the girls are working hard. We just can’t wait to compete against somebody else.” With no seniors on the squad, Jones has nine returning letter winners to count on. Back for another season are Tracy Blake, Reanna
Crane, Danae Grandberry, D’Lainee Groseth, Bailee Keller, Taelor Morrissey, Brooke Orr, Naomi Schaub and Rachel Stubbs. “Reanna, in the hurdles, is a returner there and hopefully will score some points,” Jones said. “Tracy in the jumps had appendicitis last week and will be out for the first couple weeks, but when she gets to full strength should score some points in the jumps and maybe in the sprints. “Those two are the ones that will lead us, but with our numbers we should fill most of the relays and most of the events which is nice.” With no seniors on the girl’s roster, Jones will rely on youth to step up as the season progresses. “We have a lot of freshmen and so far they are willing to try different events than they have in junior high so we can fill the events,” said Jones. “They are eager to learn anything right now and that’s always nice to see underclassmen willing to try dif-
ferent events and give it their all when they do.” On the other hand, the boy’s program will be looking for leadership from the senior class. With 25 total boys out for track, eight are seniors and the Wildcats have 12 returning letter winners. Head coach Aub Boucher said that with the help from assistants Ryan Jones, Gail Madsen, Jarod Meinheit and Rich Heessel, the Wildcats should be able to develop their talent. “We have good senior leadership,” Boucher said. “All the boys have a good work ethic and we have good numbers to work with.” Returning letter winners for the Wildcats are Jarod Cox, Brandon Fletcher, Dylan Gage, Josh Grace, Zac Gregg, Brandon Groseth, Bryson Keller, Ethan Lunkwitz, Taylor McKeeman, Lane Miller, Drew Riggs and Jaylon Sturdivant. “A key for us is to stay healthy,” Boucher said.

St. Pat’s track teams ready for new season Lady Irish flush with experience By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
It’s the final athletic season for many of St. Pat’s female athletes and they want to finish it with another round of state action. Seniors such as Shelby Allberry, Sam Byrn, Mandy O’Malley, Kari Slattery, Maggie Vinton and others have competed in state cross country, state volleyball and state basketball several times over the past few seasons and all are taking to the track for their final spring season. “We have a lot of girls with experience and a lot of girls who were state qualifiers last season,” said Lady Irish head coach Sam Byrn. “This a a great group of girls, the same group of girls who have qualified for various state events over the last few years.” While experience helps, the girls competitive drive tends to make meets the focus for these athletes. “The girls got a week and a half to two weeks off between basketball and track,” Byrn said. “With the weather forecast for Saturday, we probably won’t be holding a meet, which will disappoint the girls because they want to compete.” Saturday the St. Pat’s/Hershey Invite is
slated for Hershey. However, at press time, the National Weather Service was predicting snow for Saturday. A concern for Byrn is the placement of St. Pat’s in a new district. “We’re going to Southern Valley where we’ll compete with Southern Valley and Kearney Catholic,” the coach said. “Both schools have experienced state qualifiers returning. “I think our 4 by 800 team will be good, but they are stacked in several events which might hurt us some. They decided to send us east this year for districts instead of west.” Other returning letter winners for the Lady Irish include Natalie Mackley, Jenna Torres, Jodecci Torrez, Zandra Carlini, Bree Saner, Jamie Smith, Katie Slattery, Lexi Allison, Erin Nozicka, Laura Bjornstad and Anna O’Malley. “We have a good group with good senior leadership,” Byrn said. “We should do well. We’ll hold a few girls back a little early in the season so they can heal up some nagging injuries from winter sports and they will be ready for conference and district meets. “But other than that, we’re ready to go and looking forward to getting going.”
Irish seeking steady improvements and breakout performances By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
St. Pat’s is looking for some breakout stars on the track. The Irish return just three returning state qualifiers in track & field — Brandon Niesen, Henry Aufdenkamp and Joe O’Malley. All three are seniors, meaning if there are some breakout stars for the Irish this season, it may have to come from underclassmen. Of course, there is a senior that coach Brad Braithwait believes will also break out. “Joseph Clinch has had such good football and basketball seasons,” Braithwait said. “I’m waiting for him to put it all together in the shot and discus. “I do expect it to happen.
He’s such a good athlete and everything has sort of clicked for him this year, so I just expect it in track too.” While the Irish do have decent numbers out for track, they are lacking in certain areas. “We don’t have a hurdler right now,” the coach said. “We have to find guys for certain events and we have to continue to work hard, get better each week and be there for conference, districts and state.” Along with the returning state qualifiers and Clinch are seniors Adam Pasquinelly, Pedro Martinez, Joel Melton and Tyler Elsten. Juniors out include Jacob Cook, Jared Brosius, Brandan Adkins, Jared Gafke, Collin Pieper, Alex Harms, Chase Kimberling
and Tristan Winder. There are also 12 sophomores and 12 freshmen out for track. Braithwait mentioned both Pieper and Kimberling as potential breakout athletes for the track team in sprints. “The goal is to get better each week and improve every day,” Braithwait said. “We hope to be competitive by the end of the season. “We will work hard. We have a group of kids that like to compete, so we will work at it.” The Irish were scheduled to begin the season today in the St. Pat’s/Hershey Invite at Hershey, but the meet has been cancelled due to weather. The Irish will open the season on Thursday at the Sutherland Booster Club Invite.
Eagles ready to soar in track Injuries, other Brady boys, girls squads appear experienced, talented By MARK OBERMEIER sports@nptelegraph.com
BRADY — The cupboard certainly isn’t bare for the Brady Eagles and Lady Eagles as they enter the 2013 track season. Although the girls are small in numbers they look to carry a big wallop while the boys have 25 out and look to fill every event. It will be up to six Lady Eagles to carry the banner for Brady High School during the spring of 2013. “We didn’t get many to come out,” said Brady coach Rich Britten. “But the ones we did get are pretty good.” Brady started their season as they traveled to Kearney for the University of Nebraska-Kearney Indoor Invitational a week ago and almost retuned home with a first-place finish. The Lady Eagles ended up in second with 60 points. Molly Hannon is the lone returning senior letter winner of the six. Hannon will compete in the hurdles and Britten said she will be used in several different areas throughout
the season. Juniors Valerie Most and Lexi Franzen are also returning letter winners for the Lady Eagles. Most will be used in the high jump, pole vault, hurdles and relays. She qualified for the 2012 state meet in both the high jump and pole vault. Most has a 5 feet, 2 inches best in the high jump and has a 9-2 vault. Most won the 55-meter hurdles at the UNK meet and presently owns the school record in the 100meter hurdles. Franzen will compete in the distance events and Britten said she might also try the 800-meter run. Franzen was a member of the state-qualifying 4X800 relay two years ago. Three sophomores will add strength to the squad in Josie Palmer, Autumn Hild and Shaylin McClellen. Palmer placed third in the high jump with a leap of 5-3 at state a year ago. Britten said she will also see action in the hurdles and maybe be an experiment in the weight events. Hild was a state qualifi-
er in the 400 in 2012. She also will be used in 100 and 200. McClellen will run the sprints and was a state qualifier in the long jump last year. Brady also looks to be strong in the relays — in particular the 4X100. The Lady Eagles return three members of a school record setting performance. Most, Hild and McClellen were members of the relay a year ago and Britten said Palmer will become the fourth member of the squad. “We have a lot of ability and they really work at it,” Britten said. “I think they get the most from what they do.” The boy’s team is balanced with seven seniors, six juniors, seven sophomores and six freshmen — numbers that please Britten. “I’m really happy with the numbers on the boys squad,” Britten said. “We have a lot of seniors and good quality that will contribute a lot, especially in the middle distances, relays and hurdles.” Seniors returning for the Eagles are Bryley Rop-
er, Cole Viter, Zach Mann, Matt Litzenberger, Josh Boon, Marc Kramer-Davis and Kaleb Arterburn. Roper and Mann will be counted to lead the Eagles on the track. Roper will run the relays and also the 400, where he finished third during the UNK Indoor meet. “He may also run the 800,” Britten said. “We could put him about anywhere and he would find success. “Mann has come off a great year in football and basketball and is running well. He got second in the 800 at UNK.” Britten believes his team will be strong in the weights, longer relays and the middle distance. The Eagles lost only one member off each the 4X400 and 4X800 relays from a year ago. Members returning on the 4X400 are Roper, Mann and Eric Martin, and Roper, Viter and Troy Lusk return for the 4X800 relay. “I’m looking forward to [the relays] again,” Britten said. “They might be a little better than placed at state last year.”

changes alter look of SP golf New coach, no Keenan, mean Irish lineup facing a shakeup By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
There are plenty of changes for the St. Pat’s boys golf team this season. Mike Giebler takes over as head coach and he has observed his team’s roster change since the first meeting of the year. “We’ve lost Mark Mayfield to a surgery,” said Giebler of the junior who was interested in both golf and track & field this spring, but instead has had surgery on a big toe injury he’s had for some time. “Sean Keenan, perhaps our best golfer, is still sidelined by the knee injury he suffered playing basketball. “Also, Chris Dilley and Andrew Thalken have decided not to golf.” That leaves the Irish with three healthy seniors to start the season — Matthew Buhrman, Seth Lynes and Jake Parker — and junior Nate Chrisman. Two freshmen, Anthony Noffsinger and Bailey Shurigar, joined the team this season. “We’ll have our three healthy seniors and our junior be the varsity,” Giebler said. “We’ll get the two freshmen out there, but they aren’t ready for varsity yet.” Giebler likes his senior leadership. “Sean Keenan has been out to practice every day,” Giebler said. “He is out there, doing whatever he can to help. “He swears he’ll be cleared to play by April, but we’re taking it slow. If he can play later this year, I’m sure it will help, but the main thing is to get him healthy. “The other three seniors are also good leaders. We have a competitive team and we’ll look to get better as the season goea along.” Giebler takes over from Rick Elsasser and has a new assistant coach who is helping the team. “Mitch Ferguson is my assistant,” the coach said. “He’s been great. He’s worked at golf courses and he played for the Irish before graduating. “He’s really helped me from the start and I am pleased to have him as my assistant.” While the Irish will use River’s Edge for home meets, the goals remain constant from a year ago. “Our first goal is always to win SPVA,” Giebler said. “Than the goal is to do well in districts and then state. “We lost our top three players from a year ago, but we believe we have the experience to get better each week and challenge by the end of the season.” St. Pat’s opens the golf season at the Cambridge Invite on Wednesday.

Many area athletes prepare for the 4x800 relay at the St. Pat’s/Hershey Invite last season. Sailors have many track leaders Sutherland will have to develop field events athletes this year By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
Sutherland is a team filled with leaders this track season. Asked who the leaders for the two teams are this season and head coach Jessica Saner had no problem listing them. “Senior Chandler Tyan is our returning state qualifier in the pole vault,” Saner said of the Sailors leader for the boys. “He vaulted really well at the state meet last year and should place very high in all of our meets, including state. “I am expecting great things from him this season. He has been working really hard in practice and is a good leader for the sprinters. “Collin Fleecs has been working really hard in practice to push the middistance and sprinters as well. He is one of those kids that pushes every day, no matter how hard the workout.” On the girls side, there are plenty of leaders. “Kaley Stokey, Sam Kennedy, Tawnie McConnell, Kelsey Dillenburg and Kristen Nelson have been leading the
sprinters every day in practice,” Saner said. “They are going to push each other and the rest of the team all season long in practice and at meets to ensure they success. “I have been really pleased with the workouts that I have seen from them and I am looking forward to seeing them compete at meets soon. They won the 4x400 relay at the indoor meet at Kearney last weel and I expect that they will have a lot of success in the relays all season long. “Jalyne Schuster will be bringing home a lot of hardware in the sprints this year as well and is always a strong anchor on our 4x100. Sophomore Josie Burke is a natural leader for the distance kids. She had a really good cross country season qualifying for the state meet and I expect to see that success carry on into track. “She has been working hard in practice and is a very smooth runner.” Part of the reason for the number of leaders on the girls’ side is the success of the athletes Sutherland has had in other sports. The volleyball and girls basketball teams
have qualified for state multiple times the past few seasons. “These girls have had a lot of success while they have been in high school, which has helped the develop a lot of confidence,” Saner said. “Their success in volleyball and basketball has carried on to track already. The moment the basketball girls started track, they got into track mode and started pushing themselves to get in shape for track and have been working really hard. “We have several girls that have been leading the pack in practice every day and there is a lot of competition for some spots on relays, which will only make them push harder every day. I have really enjoyed seeing the girls competing in practice. To show the coaches that they can be counted on to work hard when the race gets tough.” While the girls have a ton of confidence and experience, the boys are young. “About half our [boys] team is composed of freshmen,” Saner said. “We will be moving those younger boys around a bit as the season progresses to see
where they can best be utilized. “It makes it easy to fill events having high numbers, but I really want to try to find the best fit for each kid so that we can really build a program for these boys. I am excited to see the improvements that they will have throughout the season.” While running events will be strong for the Sailors teams, field events may need some development. “We are going to have to develop some field events if we want to pick up some team titles,” Saner said. “We graduated a lot of our veteran field events kids last year, so we re starting fresh in several areas. “I have already seen a lot of promise in these younger kids in filling those positions and we have been working with them in many different areas to find where they will have the most success.” Like most of the area schools, Sutherland was supposed to take part in the St. Pat’s/Hershey Invite today. Sutherland will host the Sutherland Booster Invite on Thursday, March 28.

WALLACE — The Wallace boys and girls track teams have started the season out a little short-handed. The Wildcats competed Thursday in the Perkins County Quadrangular, and while coach Liz Strand admitted they didn’t score well, it was nice to get the meet in. “We are competitive and we have some strong kids,” the coach said. “It wasn’t the best weather. It was raining and snowing — not hard — but we struggled through.” Strand said her team wasn’t at full strength and will not be for several events. “We were missing six athletes who were at state speech,” Strand said. “We’ll have people miss for other state events as we go, so it might take us a while to figure out all the events and who is running where.” Strand has 14 boys out for track this season, including seven from last year, four freshmen and three newcomers to the sport. “We’ve got some good athletes on the boys side,” Strand said. “I’m real excited about what we have and what we’re doing in practice. “On the girls side, our numbers aren’t great, but the girls have a great attitude.” For the boys, Landon Swedberg, Taylor Nielson, Shane Anders, John Marquardt, Juan Gomez and Jackson Porter return. Strand said the boys will be very competitive in distance running and throws. On the girls side, Sara Hubbard, Jaclyn Nelson, Paige Aylward, Mickayla Sheets and Hayley Storm return. No athletes from Wallace qualified for the state meet last season, so getting someone to state this year is the team goal. “We got shut out from state last year,” Strand said. “So, we really want to get someone to the state meet this year and give them the experience of getting to state and competing. “We don’t know where everyone will run and what events everyone will be in and it may take a while to figure that out, but we will be in assigned spots later this season and, hopefully, get a few kids into the state meet.”
Lady Panthers are rebuilding Hershey learning on the fly By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
Coach John Foster of Hershey has a rebuilding process on his hands. “We are rebuilding,” the coach said. “We have 14 girls out and eight are first-year players. So, we are looking to learn a lot this year and see how far we can go.” The squad returns Laureen Arnett, Sarah Erickson, Krista Schufeldt, Lyndsey Taylor, Shelly Cain and Hope Duggan. Foster listed Courtney Lauber and Lydia Wiseman as two returning non-letter winners who will help the team and Erikson as a dark horse player who may surprise some people. “Arnett is our most solid player,” Foster said. “She is our best one right now. “We have a couple of girls to watch. Courtney Laubner moves outstandingly well for a young player. We just have to work on her strokes, but she moves her feet really well. “Laurel Huebner has made great strides. All the girls have positive attitudes and we are having fun while learning on the fly.” Arnett, Taylor and Duggan all have played for several years and, according to Foster, should provide good, solid tennis for the team. “The varsity girls have played for several years and should provide leadership,” the coach said. “We just lack experience and depth, but the girls are up to the challenge and looking forward to the season.” Hershey has already started the season, competing against McCook in a dual and also in the North Platte Doubles Invitational this season.

Panthers deal with changes New coach, inexperienced golfers working in Hershey By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
HERSHEY — There’s a lot of new for Hershey golf this spring. New head coach Reed Kuroki takes over for the Panthers and has a group of seven golfers out for the season. “Every member of the team is capable of contributing to the varsity,” Kuroki said. “They all have a good attitude and they are working hard in practive. “It’s going to be a good year.” The Panthers return
two experienced golfers this season in Colton Marshall and Landon Maassen. The rest of the team isn’t very experienced, but Kuroki has already seen improvement during practice rounds. “Some of these guys have hardly swung a club,” the coach said. “Yet today at practice they were hitting it pretty good. “It will be interesting.” Kuroki replaces Jeremy Thomas as head coach. Thomas was promoted at Hershey to athletic director this year and didn’t have time to coach golf this spring.
“I didn’t want to take anything away from a teacher at the school, but I told him if he needed me, I would do it,” Kuroki said. “I enjoy being involved with Hershey athletics and I’m very passionate about golf.” While the Panthers primarily play at Oregon Trails in Sutherland, they have also had practice rounds at Lake Maloney and Iron Eagle this spring. “We’ll also get to River’s Edge at some time,” Kuroki said. “So we will see a variety of course.” The Panthers will start the season March 27 at a
meet in Stapleton. While the young team may not improve enough to qualify for the state tournament as a team, Kuroki believes Marshall and Maassen may get there. “Getting a couple qualified for state might be it,” he said. “But I’ve seen a lot of improvement thus far and I won’t rule out we continue to get better and have a great year. “These kids are fun to be around and they are enjoying themselves and that’s half the battle with golf.”
Sailors golf numbers on the rise Sutherland has 14 — 7 freshmen — out for spring season BY ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
SUTHERLAND — Bo Cribelli might be taking on his dream position. The first-year teacher is the new head coach for the Sutherland boys golf team and he’s excited before the first meet. “I played college golf at Doane for four years,” Cribelli said. “I played all four years in high school. “I was the assistant coach for boys basketball, but golf is my game and I’m really looking forward to this season.” Cribelli is also drawing big numbers. The Sailors have 14 golfers —
seven male and seven female — out for the team. Sutherland has not offered girls golf in the fall, so female who want to golf join the boys team in the spring. “Our top three girls are all letter winners,” Cribelli said. “We have Halie Fleecs, Alison VanSkier and Ali Meyer all coming back. “However, our leader is Tim Pfeiff. He’s been in the program for a couple of years and he knows his way around a golf course.” Seven members of the Sailors golf squad are freshmen, which means teaching the game and continued improvement are keys for Cribelli. “Realistically, it’s possible Tim might be our only hope for a state
qualifier,” the coach said. “We are so young, however, that I hope I can get these younger golfers interested and invested enough in the game to want to come back next year and keep improving. “We have a tremendous group of younger golfers. “It’s my job to make sure they enjoy learning the game, so that they’ll love it the way I do.” Sutherland will host the SPVA Conference Meet at Oregon Trail Golf Course on April 26 and will also host the Sutherland Invite tournament on May 7. The Sailors will kick off the season at the Stapleton Invite on Wednesday.
Hershey track teams ready to run Lady Panthers short on distance, but welcome healthy Frederick By ROGER BLUHM sports@nptelegraph.com
HERSHEY — The Hershey track team is solid in numbers on the girls track team, but the girls seem to be short on distance runners. “We should compete well in the throws, jumps, sprints, hurdles and sprint relays,” said Hershey head coach Greg Miller of his Lady Panthers. “We are looking for competitors in the distance races.” Also missing from the track for the Lady Panthers will be Maegan Hiatt, who is recovering from a shoulder injury and will miss the track season.
“She’s worth 30 points per meet,” Miller said. “She is an exceptional track athlete. “Some of our other athletes will need to step up for us.” The Lady Panthers are getting a healthy Brooke Frederick this season. The senior won a state title in the pole vault a year ago at 10-feet, 10-inches, despite not being 100 percent after suffering a knee injury during the basketball season. Frederick has signed with the University of Nebraka-Kearney for pole vaulting in college. “Brooke should have an exceptional season in the sprints and pole vault,”
Miller said. “Daynlee Miller, Ryce Troyer, Jayde Olson and Brooke Munson should help make our springs and hurdles competitive. “Anessa Kivett, Cassie Boeka and MaKenzie Mustion will be solid competitors in throwing events.” Miller also said freshman Taylor Mustion may break out and help the sprints and jump totals. On the boys side, the Panthers have solid athletes, just not too many of them. “We have good kids with a solid work ethic, but we are low on numbers,” Miller said. “It will be difficult to fill all the events.”
Miller lists Dylan Johnson as someone who will do well in sprints, Josh Margritz in the hurdles Tanner Koomicki in the distance runs and Justin Weir in the throws. “Our relays and jumps are what we need to develop,” the coach said. “We don’t have enough out to be a strong team, but the kids we do have should compete well.” Hershey was scheduled to compete in the St. Pat’s/Hershey Invite today, but the meet was called off due to expected bad weather. Hershey will now open up the season on Thursday, March 28 in the Sutherland Booster Club Invite.

We have a good core of sprinters and distance kids that have some talent. Our middle distance kids and hurdlers are a little bit inexperienced but have some good potential. Our field events are the areas of question for me. We don’t have a lot of experience coming back, but we have several athletes that could make some strides in contributing to the team. I think that we can compete with a lot of teams if the kids just continue to do things right
