The benefits of leasing People frequently wrestle with the decision to lease or buy a vehicle. The decision to buy or lease depends on a host of factors, including how long you plan to own the vehicle and how frequently you're on the road. Some motorists might find leasing is better suited to their needs.
Demand for diesel vehicles increasing Today's diesel vehicles have been redesigned and reimagined, making them a growing commodity for buyers. While diesel cars and trucks were once the relative outcasts of the automotive consumer market, diesel passenger vehicles are now the center of newfound demand. One of the main draws of diesel cars and trucks is their fuel economy. Consumers focused on saving money and protecting the planet concurrently often find that diesel vehicles are more fuel efficient than vehicles that run on regular unleaded gasoline. Although diesel costs more at the pump than other fuels, drivers who fuel up with diesel gasoline can save around 30 percent through improved fuel efficiency over regular gasoline. That can add up to considerable savings over time. According to Rushlane, demand for diesel vehicles in the United States was just 3 percent in 2011. It is predicted to increase to a minimum of 10 percent during the next 10 years.
Why are diesels more efficient? Diesel engines are more efficient than gasoline engines. Higher compression ratios than gasoline produce ultra-high temperatures that will ignite fuel injected directly into the cylinder head, according to BMW.
Diesel vehicles are equipped to use more of the energy content of the fuel to produce output than vehicles that run on regular unleaded gasoline. It takes less fuel to provide the same power as standard gasoline. In the past, diesel cars were associated with black, sooty exhaust and clanking engines. However, today's modern diesel cars are quiet and burn fuel more cleanly due to new technology. New, clean diesel fuel is the only diesel fuel being sold in the United States. Although diesel vehicles have been popular in Europe for a while, they have not been very appealing in North America. Things are starting to change. German-based Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi have a history of offering an extensive range of diesel-powered vehicles in the American market. Recognizing the demand for diesel cars and trucks, Chevrolet/GMC, Ford and Jeep are now offering diesel vehicles that they hope will attract a new legion of customers. Diesel-fueled cars have evolved through the years to be vehicles that can rival gasoline-powered automobiles on the roads. With superior fuel economy, diesel vehicles may one day surpass the number of gasoline vehicles. SC143980
Some people remain skeptical of leasing, particularly because they are paying a fee to use a car for a limited time. At the end of the lease period, you do not own the vehicle, and the money you paid toward the lease is essentially gone -- unless you choose a buy-out option. But in that case it may have been less expensive to simply finance the entire time. Leasing is like renting an apartment. It provides you with what you need at the time, but you have no stake in ownership at the end of the rental period. Individuals who frequently move and want little responsibility like the freedom of renting. Those who are looking to set up a household for a long period of time often seek out a more permanent home situation. The same can be said for leasing a vehicle. If you prefer to drive a new vehicle every few years and don't want the hassle of maintenance as the vehicle ages, then leasing is the way to go. When the car is returned to the dealer after a certain period of time, you have no other responsibilities to that car or truck. Furthermore, some dealerships often offer incentives to those consumers who turn in an expired lease and immediately sign up again.

Cost is another factor to consider. Leasing is typically less expensive in the short term than purchasing. If required, down payments can be very low, while monthly lease payments tend to be lower than financing payments. Individuals who like the security a new car provides but may not have the funds to buy a new car often turn to leasing. Leasing payments can sometimes be $100 less than financing the same vehicle or one with fewer options. Leasing also can save money on warranties. Many leases are for 36 months, a period that typically coincides with the factory bumper-tobumper warranty period. This means you do not have to purchase an expensive extended warranty as you might with a vehicle you're financing to own. Drivers who spend little time in the car are often good prospects for leasing. That's because you will have to maintain a certain range of miles used within the lease term. Should you exceed the miles at the end of the term, you will be required to pay a designated rate on those extra miles, which can quickly add up. You also will have to pay for any extraneous wear-and-tear on the vehicle that goes beyond normal use. Those who only use vehicles for short jaunts here and there may find leasing advantageous. Many people who are looking for reliable cars for the short term lean toward leasing as the primary method for driving a new, optionsrich vehicle. FC12A580

How to get the best rate on a car loan Many consumers get so caught up in finding the lowest price possible for a vehicle that they fail to give sufficient thought to finding a good rate on the loan to buy that vehicle. Many consumers finance their vehicle purchases, meaning they must apply for a loan. Finding the best rate possible can reduce the cost of vehicle ownership considerably.
or inconsistencies that may be negatively affecting your credit score.
Research is any consumer's best friend, especially when buying an automobile, and understanding the market and the interest rates available can save drivers substantial amounts of money. Here's how to secure the best interest rate possible.
• Determine a budget to figure out what is affordable. • Shop around with various lenders to see if you can get a better deal.
• Begin by requesting a copy of your credit report. Review the information and address any issues
• Purchasing a new car may pay off in terms of a lower loan rate.
• Keep credit unions in mind. • Consider online banks, which can be quite competitive with loan rates. • Buy a car you can afford. You will pay less by financing a lower-priced vehicle. Purchase the car you need, but make sure it's a car you can afford as well. SC143995

I've been a school psychologist since 1978, and my assignment has changed somewhat during that time, so it has given me some experiences in several different school buildings. In my current assignment, half an hour before the end of the school day, parents begin parking in a row outside the front door of the school buildings and sit in their cars, with the engines running, until dismissal. I won't embarrass people in this district by reporting the name, but the ZIP code is 50548. I laughed at their poor judgment and wasted gas. If Wikianswers is right about an average idling car using 0.8 gallons per hour, they are spending $256.96 over the course of 180 school days, at current gas prices. Then I came home and told my husband about it. He's retired and goes out for coffee three mornings a week. He told me that he drives to the coffee shop over an hour before it opens so he can sit in his favorite parking spot and listen to his favorite CDs on his truck's CD player. Those parents running their cars outside the school buildings look like wise decision-makers by comparison. Does idling a Toyota Tacoma for over an hour at a time hurt the engine? -- Ann RAY: I think the Wiki-answers estimate is high, Ann. I'd guess an idling car uses closer to a quarter of a gallon an hour. Maybe a third. TOM: But that's still throwing away a dollar an hour just to sit there. Not to mention the five or 10 pounds of carbon dioxide you're adding to the environment during that time.

TOM: So it's really an environmental and economic issue. If your husband is not motivated by either of those -- or those issues are overridden for him by the pleasure he gets from his car stereo and alone time -- you may be out of luck. RAY: In terms of the school, though, you might want to suggest a "no idling" policy. Lots of states and municipalities have implemented such policies, and a school seems like a particularly good place to do it. TOM: By sitting there idling for half an hour, not only are the parents contributing to global warming -- a problem their kids will have to live with - but they're adding pollution to the immediate school environment, where, presumably, kids are playing and learning.

RAY: Unfortunately, we can't help you by claiming that it's bad for the car -- the car really doesn't care. In fact, as long as the cooling system is functioning properly, idling is pretty easy on the car; the engine's not working hard, and the rest of the car is just sitting there.

RAY: And let your husband know that you've heard there's a new invention that might interest him. It's called "indoors." And he might want to avail himself of it. TOM: Although from his point of view, the great indoors has two serious disadvantages: It probably doesn't have as good a sound system as his truck. And, even worse, when you're indoors, you sometimes have to interact with other human beings. I'm guessing that's a dealbreaker for him, Ann. ***
