DROWSY DRIVING CAN BE AS DANGEROUS AS DRIVING IMPAIRED The public is well educated about the dangers of driving while impaired by medication, alcohol or illegal drugs. But drivers may not be aware that driving while tired can be just as dangerous. Driving when tired can be a fatal mistake. Just as alcohol or drugs can slow down reaction time, impair judgment and increase the risk of accident, so, too, can being tired behind the wheel. Drowsy driving is reportedly what caused the fatal crash in June 2014 between a limousine and a Walmart truck that ended the life of comic James McNair and seriously injured fellow comedian Tracy Morgan. The driver, Kevin Roper, was going 20 miles over the speed limit and was almost at his drive time limit, according to preliminary reports by the National Transportation Safety Board. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 100,000 car crashes in the United States each year occur as the result of an overly tired driver. Various studies demonstrate that drivers who have remained awake for 18 hours prior to driving mimic the driving performance of intoxicated motorists. In fact, drowsy driving can be confused with driving with a high blood alcohol content. Sleepiness can arise relatively quickly, and according to Thomas Balkin, PhD, director of the behavioral biology program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and a leading expert on sleep and fatigue, it's difficult for drivers to assess just how sleepy they are. fighting sleep, the effect of any method of reviving yourself can be very short-lived." Furthermore, people do not have to be in a deep sleep to actually be asleep behind the wheel. Micro-sleeps occur when certain brain cells temporarily shut down for a few seconds. A person is not completely asleep but in a sort of fog as if they are asleep. When sleepiness sets in, the best course of action is to pull off the road. Opening the window, turning on the radio or blasting cold air is, at best, only a temporary solution. If driving with passengers and feelings of sleepiness appear, hand the keys over to a passenger and have them take over driving, if possible. Otherwise, a short nap and a cup of coffee can be used in combination to increase alertness. It's also a good idea to avoid beginning a long road trip in mid-afternoon around the hours of two or three o'clock. While alertness generally dips in the evening hours, due to the circadian rhythm, alertness also dips in the late afternoon, prompting drowsiness. A 2010 study by the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety found that as many drivers reported falling asleep at the wheel in the afternoon hours as reported falling asleep late at night. Driving in a warm, quiet car also may spur drowsiness, as would driving after a heavy meal. Driving tired is just as dangerous as other impaired driving. Slow reaction times and unawareness of surroundings can contribute to accidents that are otherwise avoidable.

THE DAY THE CRUISE CONTROL DIED BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI Dear Tom and Ray: Today my question is about safety. My husband, who has not had an accident in the 20 years I've known him, drives in a way that makes me nervous. Specifically, I feel like I am in a video game when I sit in the front seat with him. Images of cars, people, trees, etc., appear to fly in my face as he drives up to cars really quickly and then around them just as quickly. With great effort, I have stopped screaming in terror and hiding my face in my hands when I ride with him, because honestly, he has never had an accident, so maybe it is some perspective problem that I have. Mostly, I try to keep my eyes squeezed shut. However, sometimes I open them, and this is when I notice that he does not hold the steering wheel when he drives. I told him I thought that wasn't safe, but he said he has always done it that way and it is fine. He agreed to consider stopping if I found evidence that it is dangerous. But of course I could not, just as you cannot find evidence that it is important to be conscious while driving, because there are few statistics on this. To be fair, he does hold the steering wheel sometimes. And sometimes he will use his knee. Other times, he will lightly rest a finger on the wheel to help guide the car. He has always loved you guys, and listens to your radio show and reads your column. Is there anything you can do to help? We have two
children, ages 11 and 13, who ride in the back seat, and I am seriously thinking of joining them. Is he right, that all this is safe? -- Maria RAY: No -- he's a nut bag, Maria. And the fact that he listens to our show and reads our column only confirms that. TOM: Of course it's not safe to let go of the steering wheel, or to drive with your knees. Why do you think you so rarely hear driving instructors say, "Keep your knees at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel"? RAY: The reason is that stuff happens, and it happens quickly. You're driving along, and a dog runs into the road. Or a king-size Sealy Posturepedic mattress goes flying off the roof of the station wagon in front of you. It's in those situations -- when you need to change the direction of the car instantly -- that your hands are far better at moving the steering wheel than your knees are. And two hands do a better job than one hand. TOM: Racing up to a car in front of him before passing it also is highly dumb -- for the same reason. You're going 70 or 80 mph, and the car in front of you is going 15 or 20 mph slower than that. If that car should suddenly stop, because a car in front of him stops, or a truck loses a tire, there's no way Hubby will be able to stop in time.
