Intoduction Roland Nancarrow captures the colours and forms of our tropical paradise through all of his works of art. A respected peer in our community of artists, Nancarrow has established himself as a sculptor, painter and in recent years a public artist through numerous commissions throughout Queensland and has an ongoing demand for solo exhibitions.

Roland Nancarrow has had a connection with Cairns for 37 years, after being posted here as a young bank officer. Well known as a sculptor and public artist this exhibition is primarily a ‘painted’ look at his adopted ‘hometown’. The title ‘101 Views of Cairns’ is not literal, however the series could be viewed as a progression, like the many thoughts one may have about Cairns as it is not the paradise the glossy brochures would have us believe, as evidenced by the recent months of overcast skies following the devastating cyclone ‘Larry.’

Nancarrow, known affectionately as ‘Rollie’ is also an educator and has a following of students who admire his dedication to his artistic practice and benefit greatly from his knowledge, experience and professional expertise.

In these paintings Nancarrow comments on the glossy as well as celebrating and preserving the streetscapes, roundabouts and snippets of water views that are becoming increasingly smaller as waterfront development increases along with development of our green, mountainous backdrops.

He is always a pleasure to work with and KickArts takes great pleasure in presenting this repertoire of Rollie’s work.

In this series of predominantly intimate canvases the views are presented like windows into the bigger picture, which Nancarrow sees as a traditional painters’ format having experimented with Velazquez and Matisse, but here the realism of the issues provides a contrast with the abstracted background or foreground. Source material for this exhibition comes from the artist’s collection of photographs, drawings and paintings compiled over many years as well as the recent discovery of his father’s photographs of Cairns taken in the 60’s. The artist remembers a time when there were no traffic lights in the city and city streets were devoid of cars on the weekend, so his celebration of Cairns is also tinged with nostalgia.

The exhibition captures many views from the past four decades. Some remain the same, others have been reduced and quite a few have been lost forever. Those who are new to Cairns will experience the current views of tropical paradise, of endless vibrant colour with lashings of sunshine. Locals will see what was and know now it is covered with the shadows of our growing city or recognise a current view that has its days numbered by a proposed development as seen in ‘Studio View, II, III & IV’. The KickArts Artists’ Studio features views out across the Coral Sea, an image that is fitting for an artists’ studio in Cairns that shortly will be lost to the proposed development at the RSL. ‘Studio View, II, III & IV’ will become our memory of what was a wonderful landscape from our studio. The views are still around, you just have to go further to find them.
