Menu Board is an exhibition of new works by Julie Poulsen, who has been practising and teaching art in Cairns for twenty years.
The exhibition shows the humour and insight that is often seen in Julie’s work, as she continues to seek new and unpredictable possibilities in her art.
The paintings use text as a subject, which first appears almost as abstract visual patterns, but the gastronomic meanings of the words create a tension in the works, with the visual and verbal fighting to be ‘read’ in different ways.
Whereas an actual café menu board is usually a flat, black surface, Julie’s compositions are soft, stitched and assembled, scarified, printed and painted, which contributes to the effect of the often obscure letters and words having a life of their own.
