Bermuda bursts with natural splendour, historic legacy, and cultural charm that will enthral every curious traveller.

aAs Hubert Smith once sang so sweetly, “Bermuda is another world”; and if you arrive to the island by plane and are fortunate enough to snag a window seat, you’ll quickly confirm this sentiment. As the aircraft slowly descends, an island, shaped like a fishtail hook, beset in a vivid blend of turquoise waters punctuated by coral reefs, will begin to reveal itself to you. From this vantage point, it’s hard to imagine that a country so small in landmass has so much to offer for every type of visitor aside from its captivating beauty.

 It's hard to imagine that a country so small in landmass has so much to offer for every type of visitor.

A small yet vibrant mosaic of nature makes up the island’s natural terrain from beach to saltwater mangroves, forest, and even underground caves. Mighty fortifications and landmarks rooted in historical significance chronicle Bermuda’s diverse past, while galleries safeguard the island’s creative identity through various art forms. These core elements weave together Bermuda’s rich cultural tapestry, the threads of which eagerly await to be unravelled by curious visitors through several activities and attractions.

While the island’s public transportation network is comprised of ferries and busses, you might want the autonomy to explore at your own pace with a vehicle rental. Oleander Cycles and Smatt’s Cycles are mainstays for scooters. Meanwhile, Bermuda Rental Car Ltd. offers a fleet of small electric automobiles for those who prefer the stability of four wheels. Alternatively, take in the fresh ocean breeze on a Pedego Electric Bike. No matter which mode of travel you choose, though, be sure to take caution when navigating the island’s sun-soaked narrow roads. Once you’ve

established your preferred mode of transport, you’re all set to embark on a Bermudian adventure with our list of the very best things to do along 21 square miles of paradise.

HISTORICAL TREASURES

National Museum of Bermuda

As Bermuda’s largest fortification, the National Museum of Bermuda (NMB) is a fitting place to begin your journey into Bermuda’s past. Explore 500 years of local maritime and island history displayed in award-winning exhibits. From treasures recovered on shipwrecks to mighty cannons, the NMB has impressively preserved over 80,000 artefacts of historical significance, all housed within former military buildings.

African Diaspora Heritage Trail

From east to west, this collection of landmark sites (found on www.gotobermuda.com) allows visitors to trace the island’s storied and resilient past through the lived experiences of Bermuda’s enslaved population. While the trail documents the transatlantic slave trade, it also pays homage to the enslaved persons that were brought to the Bermuda in the 18th century, their collective stories, and the indelible legacy they left behind.

Carter House Museum

Teleport back in time with a visit to Carter House, a property known to be one of the oldest Bermuda vernacular farmhouses in St. David’s. The interior of this historic home takes the shape of a museum, where exhibits on whaling, fishing, boat building, and farming take precedence. A unique replica of Bermuda’s first abode is also on-site — complete with a palmetto thatched roof — depicting what life was like for the island’s first settlers.

Royal Naval Dockyard

Nestled on the West End of the island, Royal Naval Dockyard seamlessly intertwines the island’s rich history with modern-day attractions. Dating back to the 1800s, when the British Royal Navy purchased the 200 West End acres, this sprawling complex underwent significant land reclamations that transformed the area, which was developed by enslaved and free Bermudians. What emerged was not just a working dockyard but a thriving hub encompassing a victualling yard and ordnance depot. Today, Royal Naval Dockyard welcomes visitors with an array of expansive shopping,

dining, and entertainment options, complemented by a plethora of watersport activities, ensuring a vibrant and dynamic experience for visitors.

ISLAND ADVENTURES

Cooper’s Island

Nature Reserve

Formerly occupied by the U.S. military, this expanse of parkland covers the southeastern tip of Bermuda and boasts an unrivalled blend of beach and forest exploration. One could easily spend the day here traversing peaceful wooded trails and bird-watching from the Wildlife Observation Tower. Make sure to come equipped with swimming and snorkelling gear to enjoy the two pristine beaches that line either side of the reserve’s coast.

Admiralty House Park

Located on Bermuda’s North Shore, this site once housed the admirals in the British Royal Navy. Though remnants of its history remain evident in the form of derelict structures and underground passages, the main draw to this park is its dramatic cliffs that skirt a calm, sparkling blue lagoon known as Clarence Cove. Rock climbers can test their skills on the cliff face, and below, snorkellers can explore sea caves, often home to spiny lobsters, green sea turtles, and other intriguing species of marine life.

Blue Hole Park

Popularly known by locals as Tom Moore’s Jungle, Blue Hole Park is part of the larger 12-acre Walsingham Nature Reserve. The grounds sit above a

network of underground caves, some of which can be explored by venturing deep into the heart of its dense woodland. A short distance away from the Causeway entrance of this reserve, however, grants easy access to the famed Blue Hole. This open water lagoon, fringed by mangroves and rock formations, is probably one of the island’s most enchanting spots to take a plunge.

Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI)

For an educational adventure that the whole family will enjoy, head to the Ocean Discovery Centre at the BUEI. Interactive exhibits, a world-renowned private shell collection, and a simulated diving experience that takes you on a submersible mission to unlock the secrets of the Bermuda Triangle are amongst the several interesting ways you can learn about the island’s diverse marine environment here without ever getting your toes wet.

Famous Homes & Hideaways Tour

One of the best ways to see Bermuda is by boat, and this excursion checks the boxes for many visitors due to its diverse itinerary. You’ll cruise along the shoreline, taking in iconic landmarks and charming, pastel-coloured homes that are steeped in history, some of which belong to notorious celebrities. Commentary provided by knowledgeable local guides is a seamless blend of historical facts and humorous anecdotes.

PRESERVING PARADISE

DISCOVER AUTHENTIC WAYS TO CONNECT WITH NATURE ON AN ISLAND THAT VALUES CONSERVATION AT ITS CORE.

AS MORE PEOPLE become conscious about the impact of traditional tourism on the planet, many are seeking out sustainable alternatives, which has given rise to ecotourism industries across the world. While this global movement is fuelled, in part, due to growing environmental concerns, it is also driven largely by the desire for meaningful experiences that enable travellers to make a difference. Bermuda, with its rich legacy of conservation, is the perfect destination to interact with the beauty of the natural world and the local community, all whilst having a positive impact on the environment.

The Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS) is one charity that is connecting people to conservation by funding educational and research programmes that aim to

inspire appreciation and care of island environments. A shining example of its ecological mission is Trunk Island, a seven-acre site in Harrington Sound that is home to an array of marine and terrestrial habitats. Those who wish to visit will be shuttled by boat to participate in the habitat restoration of what has become Bermuda’s “Living Classroom” and learn more about a variety of topics, from invasive species to the important role mangroves play in island ecosystems.

Back on land, another bourgeoning initiative birthed by the BZS is its Micro Forest Project, which helps to sequester carbon from the atmosphere, countering the effects of climate change. Across the island, pockets of green are cropping up, resembling a Bermuda untouched by mankind. Despite their small size, the

forests are mighty in biodiversity, packing in up to four plants per square metre. Volunteer your time to help maintain the plots alongside local conservationists and, in a few years, return to Bermuda to see how the sites have matured into thriving, self-sustaining ecosystems.

BZS is the support charity for the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ), which offers a couple of boat-led excursions during the summer months (May through September) that provide intimate glimpses of wildlife in their natural abodes. Hop aboard Callista for a cruise through scenic Harrington Sound, where knowledgeable local experts will share historical facts and anecdotes in the form of a guided tour. Or, for a more immersive experience, embark on a snorkelling adventure to North Rock, located 10 miles off the shoreline on Bermuda’s outer reef.

For more educational discoveries, plan a visit to BAMZ, which earns the distinction of being one of the world’s oldest aquariums. Its campus rests across from the picturesque Flatts Inlet, framed by palm fronds and pastel-coloured homes. Reserve a couple of hours to explore this five-acre facility that features a diverse range of animals — from ring-tailed lemurs, pink flamingos, and tree kangaroos to golden lion tamarin monkeys and more. A playground for little ones, a café, and gift shop can also be found on-site. A highlight not to be missed is the recently opened A Tale of Two Islands exhibit, which uses the style of a graphic novel to chronicle Bermuda’s conservation efforts through the years, telling the overarching stories of Nonsuch Island and Trunk Island.

NATURAL GEMS

The Crystal Caves of Bermuda

The discovery rights of this natural wonder are uniquely bestowed upon two teenage boys who, in 1907, stumbled upon it whilst searching for a lost cricket ball. More than a century later, this Ice Age–era subterranean world is one of Bermuda’s leading attractions — and for good reason. Visitors who descend into Crystal Cave and Fantasy Cave on a guided tour will be met with otherworldly stalactites and stalagmites as well as a sparkling lagoon that you can cross by floating walkway.

Spittal Pond Nature Reserve

This lush wild space should be at the top of any nature enthusiast’s itinerary for its prime birdwatching opportunities. The sprawling 64-acre oceanfront reserve is the largest on island and in 1999 was declared a Wetland of National Importance. Spend the day here strolling along leafy footpaths through its wooded reserve that is home to a wide variety of biodiversity, including the Bermuda Skink, one of the rarest lizards in the world.

Astwood Park

If it’s solitude you’re after, Astwood Cove Park rarely draws a crowd, promising a serene escape into the natural world. An expansive park welcomes you on arrival where Bermuda Longtails, who make their nests on this dramatic stretch of South Shore coastline, can be seen playfully dancing in the summer skies. Cool off below in secluded waters at Astwood Cove Beach but tread carefully getting there along the steep, winding footpath.

Southlands National Park

Arguably one of the Bermuda’ best-kept secrets, this expanse of natural wonder is framed at its entrance by a tunnel of banyan trees. As you venture further down leafy trails that once made up a private estate, you’ll find gardens, ponds, and derelict homes rooted in history. After hiking your way through the park, jump into the tranquil waters of Marley Beach for a refreshing swim.

wWhat Bermuda lacks in landmass, it certainly makes up for in a profusion of stunning coast and multi-shaded blue water; and its allencompassing ocean environment provides some of the best experiences for water lovers.

No matter where you are on the island, you’re not far from the well-known reparative qualities of the sea air. There’s a reason so many in the past were prescribed time near the ocean when they were suffering from a malady: The ocean is truly restorative. And no matter how you hope to spend time

on or near the water, there’s an activity to help you relax and unwind or get your heart pumping.

ON THE WATER

Bermuda has its share of beautiful and accessible beaches, but it is the ones that you can only get to by water that really give those island vacation vibes. To get there, take your pick of a variety of vessels — from a self-driven 13- to 16-foot Boston Whaler to a 23-foot pontoon boat — or leave the navigation up

to a skilled professional aboard a charter ranging from a 23-foot motorboat to a 65-foot catamaran. The larger yachts are stocked with all the adventure gear you’ll need for a fun-filled day, including paddleboards, snorkelling gear, and floaties ideal for whiling away the hours and letting the ocean carry your worries away.

Charters can be arranged to suit your preferences, catering to adventurers craving excitement under the sun and those seeking a leisurely sunset cruise. For those who prefer not to get wet but still want a glimpse of the underwater world, there are glass-bottom boats for sightseeing in comfort and style.

If you’re in the mood for a beach with all the amenities conveniently at your fingertips, you’ll find fantastic spots catering to those desires at both ends of the island. Tobacco Bay Beach Club, within walking distance to the Town of St. George, is where you can enjoy beachside food and drinks before heading out to snorkel and discover the hidden world teeming with sea life around the beach’s unique rock formations. Or take a trip west to Royal Naval Dockyard and settle in at Snorkel Park Beach Club & Nightclub, where you can spend the day soaking up some vitamin D in a beach cabana, and then enjoy the party vibes as the sun goes down. For kids and kids at heart, the Longtail Water Park anchored at Heritage Wharf, just a few minutes’ walk from the Snorkel Park Beach, is a converted three-storey party boat that’s equipped with three water slides, diving boards up to 28 feet high, and a floating obstacle course for hours of fun.

ADVENTURE SEEKERS

While a day spent relaxing on island-time is a must, when you’re ready to get your blood pumping, take your pick of exciting options — from a two- or three-hour adventure Jet Ski tour to tubing on a fastpaced inflatable banana boat ride for an absolute high-speed thrill fest that takes you skimming along the crystal-clear blue waters. For an all-encompassing high-flying thrill, take a parasailing tour and delight in the panoramic views of the island and its stunning coral reefs that ring the coastline.

For something a little slower paced but sure to get your blood pumping, join a guided kayak tour or rent a stand-up paddleboard and journey along Bermuda’s beautiful coastline stopping in shallow coves for a dip in the refreshing water. Another great family-friendly adventure on the water includes a snorkelling excursion to explore the vibrant marine life and stunning coral reefs surrounding the islands. You won’t have to swim too far before you are surrounded by yellow and black–striped sergeant majors, angelfish, and multicoloured neon parrotfish; and, if you’re lucky, you might even spy on a sea turtle munching on seagrass.

From March to April, humpback whales turn Bermuda’s waters into their playground as they migrate north to their summer feeding grounds. From slapping their fins and flippers and spouting water from their blowholes to full-on breaching, their antics are a breathtaking sight. Organised

charters with knowledgeable guides are one of the best ways to experience this phenomenon, as while the whales appear friendly, there are strict rules in place for a waterside encounter that is best left to the professionals.

Throughout the year, the water surrounding the island is full of marine life, including game fish that can make for a challenging and fun offshore experience. Full-, three-quarter, and half-day charters are available with expert local fisherman who will help you haul in a catch of wahoo, tuna, amberjack, and mahi mahi. If you’re

looking for a real (or reel) thrill, book a marlin charter and seek out the ocean’s giants to fight a white or blue marlin.

UNDER THE BLUE

If you’re looking for an expert when it comes to Bermuda’s underwater environment, there’s an incredible dive community on the island. Whether snorkelling around one of the 300 wrecks surrounded by aquatic life or searching deeper with a certified PADI diver and scuba diving around Bermuda’s stunning coral reefs, there is another world to discover under

ocean here. The history of the ships that have wrecked off Bermuda’s treacherous reefs is fascinating and can only truly be appreciated by experiencing one firsthand, from older steamers that wrecked in the 1800s to a former floating casino that the government sunk in 2016 to turn into a recreational dive site. Some can be found in shallower waters — including the HMS Vixen, known for its abundance of sea life — to those in deeper yet incredibly accessible waters, including one of the largest vessels, the former cruise ship Cristóbal Colón, which wrecked near North Rock in 1936.

While North Rock is some 10 miles off Bermuda, this location is notable for being the most northern coral reefs and, despite its distance from shore, is often shallow enough to stand between reefs. It is also full of an abundance of sea life, including angelfish, blue wrasse, and hogfish, making it a must-see for diving enthusiasts.

WHALE WATCH

JOIN RENOWNED WHALE RESEARCHER ANDREW STEVENSON ON AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY INTO THE AZURE WATERS OF BERMUDA, WHERE MAJESTIC HUMPBACK WHALES GRACE THE SEAS.

BERMUDA IS UNIQUELY POSITIONED in the middle of the ocean to play witness to the phenomenon of migrating humpback whales. Within viewing distance from land, these beautiful creatures can often be spotted — most prominently from March to April — when they are migrating from their breeding grounds in the Northern Caribbean to summer feeding areas off the coast of Canada. They appear just as enamoured by the island’s temperate waters as those who come to visit, as they frolic and play, often breaching even near land.

Andrew Stevenson, who has been researching these incredible creatures for the past 18 years since he encountered his first humpback he named Magical Whale off Bermuda’s waters, has helped to identify over 2,000 of the species.

“The distinctive black and white pigmentation of a humpback’s fluke is as unique as a human’s fingerprint,” explains Stevenson.

His first documentary, Where the Whales Sing, was a moment that changed

his life and set him on a path to help create one of the biggest geographic catalogues of identification. “It’s also unique as one of the only identification catalogues of whales in the middle of the ocean, which is afforded by Bermuda’s prime location,” he says.

While Stevenson takes whatever opportunity he can to get out and observe the humpbacks behaviour in his 22-foot centre console, whale watching tours on larger vessels with experienced captains can be arranged. However, since the timing of the whale’s trek past the island is short, and a boat tour can potentially be disrupted by weather, there are several land-based locations that make for excellent spots to spend time experiencing this extraordinary natural wonder.

In the East End of the island, climb the observatory tower at Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve on St. David’s Island, stop off along the roadside at Watch Hill Park just west of John Smith’s Bay, or climb along the rocks at the Spittal Pond Nature Reserve. These two viewing locations are both located in Smith’s Parish.

Heading a little more west, take a stroll across the rolling hills at Astwood Park or stop along the lay-bys on South Shore Road between Warwick Long Bay and East Whale Bay — each of these offers some of the most stunning and unobstructed views.

For more about the humpback whales and their connection to Bermuda, visit www.whalesbermuda.com, which also links to the Whales Bermuda Facebook page, where people log real-time humpback sightings.

EXPLORING THE DEPTHS

DIVE INTO THE

TURQUOISE WATERS AND DISCOVER THE ALLURE OF BERMUDA’S VIBRANT MARINE LIFE, SUNKEN SHIPS, AND UNFORGETTABLE TREASURES.

WITH ITS CRYSTAL-CLEAR WATERS and rich maritime history, Bermuda emerges as a beacon for diving enthusiasts worldwide.

Snorkelling or diving with a certified PADI diver provides a unique experience for those who prefer a closer encounter with Bermuda’s underwater world. Several beaches make snorkelling accessible so you can explore directly from the shore or venture a little deeper by heading out on a charter boat. Either way, you may catch a glimpse of yellow and black–striped sergeant majors, neon parrotfish, angelfish, and the occasional sea turtle or octopus if you’re lucky. The island offers epic coral reefs like North Rock, teeming with grander fish species and ancient undersea formations. Cathedral Reef is another hidden gem that boasts caves, canyons, and crevices, revealing vibrant marine treasures.

Dive Week, a celebration of Bermuda’s underwater wonders, extends an irresistible invitation to divers of all skill levels. This weeklong celebration, which takes place May 12–18, 2024, fosters camaraderie amongst divers and highlights the unique maritime world of the island. During the event, you can learn more about Bermuda’s reefs and underwater life, become scuba diving certified, and enjoy great deals and family-friendly activities showcasing the island’s extraordinary marine ecosystem.

With expert guides leading the way, Dive Week promises unforgettable encounters and bucket-list moments, making it an essential experience for any diving enthusiast.

TALES OF THE DEEP

Bermuda’s claim to fame as the “wreck capital of the Atlantic” is validated by over 300 shipwrecks surrounding the island. The

waters around Bermuda, often dubbed the “Isle of Devils” due to its treacherous reefs, abound with opportunities to explore more than 40 sunken ships, some dating back to the 1600s.

The Hermes, one of Bermuda’s most popular shipwrecks, sits upright in 80 feet of water, whilst the Mary Celestia, a Civil War blockade-runner whose secret cargo of perfume and wine remained hidden until 2011, tells a tale from 1864.

The North Carolina, Iristo, and Cristóbal Colón also contribute a unique chapter to Bermuda’s maritime history and are all worth exploring.

TREASURES OF THE OCEAN

Bermuda’s waters not only host shipwrecks but also conceal treasures waiting to be discovered. Teddy Tucker’s remarkable find, Tucker’s Cross, a 22-karat gold cross adorned with emeralds, remains a testament to the island’s underwater riches. Discovered in 1955, the cross was sadly stolen

in 1975 and never retrieved. A hologram version can now be seen at the Ocean Discovery Centre at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI).

Other treasures have also been recovered over the years. The Constellation — made famous by Jaws author Peter Benchley’s novel, The Deep — invites divers to step into the pages of nautical history. After it sank in 1942, divers recovered coffee cups, nail polish bottles, ceramic tiles, and crucifixes, offering a glimpse into the past.

The Eagle, which sank in 1659, left behind an array of artefacts, including clay pipes that were likely used for tobacco.

From exhilarating dives to snorkelling excursions, visitors can discover myriad opportunities for adventure beneath the waves.

Adventure awaits even on an island smaller than most metropolitan cities. But what its small size affords is the ease of exploring and getting active. From hiking along coastal paths, working on your golf handicap, or biking along the repurposed former railway line, the island offers up plenty of adventures to get your heart rate up and even meet your step goal on vacation.

HITTING THE GREEN

Even though the island is only 21 square miles, much of that green space has been dedicated to world-class golf courses, with the highest concentration than anywhere else in the world. A round of golf here is like no other; the courses are both breathtaking and challenging, with some designed by renowned course architects like Charles Blair Macdonald and Robert Trent Jones, and they are routinely awarded and highly ranked by international publications, including Travel + Leisure Golf and Golf Digest

Along with stunning views and varied play options, all the courses are well kept and beautifully landscaped with all the amenities and high-tech features needed for an excellent round of golf — whether you’re an amateur or pro.

Over the years, both celebrity golfers and rising stars in the sport have tested their skills on Bermuda’s prestigious courses. Most recently, Adam Scott and Stewart Cink have graced the fairways, bringing a touch of stardom to the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, an annual PGA Tour event held at the picturesque Port Royal Golf Course. In a milestone moment, the PGA Tour, Bermuda Tourism Authority, and Butterfield Group commemorated the fifth anniversary of the Championship by announcing a multiyear extension to their partnership, which will continue as part of the Tour’s FedEx Cup Fall lineup. The highlight of the Bermuda tournament calendar sees more than 100 professional players descending on one of the island’s most spectacular courses, which is often ranked as one of the best public golf courses in the world. The tournament stands as a must-attend event, offering an array of hole-side experiences tailored to

delight golf enthusiasts of all kinds. The Butterfield Bermuda Championship will take place November 14–17, 2024.

Along with the Bermuda Championship, the golf calendar is full throughout the year. Highlights include the Bermuda Hotel Association and Visit Bermuda Adrian Hassell Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament held on May 10, 2024, at Tucker’s Point Golf Course and the Bermuda Celebrity Golf Invitational, which will take place October 4–8, 2024, at the Port Royal Golf Course. Last year, the inaugural Bermuda Celebrity Golf Invitational attracted a lineup of actors, retired star athletes, and notable guests, including Anthony Anderson, Bo Jackson, and Julius Irving. The 72nd Goodwill Bermuda Golf Tournament takes place December 8–11, 2024.

For the golfer looking for something a bit more relaxing, take a trip to Bermuda Fun Golf in Royal Naval Dockyard. This mini golf course’s claim to fame includes its replicas of notable holes at famous golf courses from both Bermuda and around the world. Take a shot like those on the PGA Tour at Port Royal’s 16th hole,

Augusta National’s 12th hole, or Scotland’s Gleneagles’s 13th hole, to name a few. Along with stunning views of the island’s North Shore, Bermuda Fun Golf also offers a grill and bar menu at their aptly named Caddy Shack.

GETTING IN YOUR STEPS

With such an excellent year-round climate, Bermuda is a place where spending time outdoors is ingrained in the culture. It seems that almost every week there are events taking place that are perfect for travellers with an active lifestyle to maintain.

Road races are particularly popular in the milder winter months, and there are a few that attract visitors, including the Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge. While there are three distinct events that take place over the weekend that include the Front Street Mile, a 10K, and a half or full marathon, it’s the Triangle Challenge that many attempt to tackle, which sees participants take on all three races over the course of the weekend, ending with either the half or full marathon. The Triangle Challenge will take place January 17–19, 2025. With

the success of Bermuda’s Dame Flora Duffy, who won the island’s first gold medal at the 2021 Olympics for triathlon, the enthusiasm around the sport has continued to grow, with even the government renaming a hill in her honour and designating October 18 as Flora Duffy Day. In previous years, Bermuda has proudly hosted the esteemed World Triathlon Championship Series. Year-round, the Bermuda Triathlon Association organises a variety of events, featuring both sprint and standard distances, inviting athletes to test their mettle against the island’s scenic backdrop.

For adventurers eager to stay active whilst immersing themselves in Bermuda’s natural beauty, the Bermuda Railway Trail stands out as one of the best outdoor experiences on

the island. Winding its way across the island’s expanse, this revitalised former railway boasts stunning vistas along its 20-mile course from east to west. Take in sweeping panoramas of the North Shore, Fort Scaur, and Royal Naval Dockyard as you traverse this scenic route. Each section is a manageable 1.5 to 3.5 miles, making it ideal for walking, running, and biking off the main road away from vehicular traffic. There are several outlets, including Pedego Electric Bikes in St. George’s, that organise tours to allow a more in-depth look into the history of the railway, which was abandoned after only 17 years in use. One unique way to enjoy the trails is by horseback. In addition to its scenic trails, Bermuda boasts a variety of nature reserves and parks, each offering diverse terrain that allows visitors to discover the island’s breathtaking natural landscapes.

For those seeking on-court action, Bermuda’s tennis scene continues to thrive. With the surge in popularity of pickleball, several courts across the island have been converted to accommodate this trending game.

THE SPORTS SCENE

Bermuda boasts a competitive sports scene in a variety of sports, including cricket, football (soccer), track and field, and rugby, with teams regularly competing in domestic games and events as well as producing national teams and competitors who show off their talents in overseas competitions. In 2023, the island played host to the USATF Bermuda Grand Prix, which saw over 100 athletes from 20 countries compete in 15 high-octane track and field events.

Locally, one of the highlights of the yearly sports calendar is the Annual Cup Match Classic. The two-day event, which marks the height of summer in Bermuda, sees the St. George’s Cricket Club battle for the cup against the current champions Somerset Cricket Club. Each year the venue switches between the clubs, with the 2024 event taking place at the Somerset Cricket Club on August 1 and 2.

RISING STAR

EXPLORE THE REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF BERMUDA’S GOLF PRODIGY, OLIVER BETSCHART, WHO DEFIED THE ODDS TO BECOME ONE OF THE YOUNGEST QUALIFIERS FOR A PROFESSIONAL GOLF TOUR.

GIVEN BERMUDA’S ABUNDANCE of golf courses and fervent passion for the sport, it’s no surprise that a golf star might be made on these greens. In 2023, Oliver Betschart emerged as one of the youngest qualifiers for a professional tour, achieving this milestone at just 15 years old.

He secured his spot in his first professional PGA tour event at the 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship by clinching an impressive 68, a testament to his unwavering dedication and years of persistent effort leading up to qualification.

Having devoted much of his formative years to honing his skills on the greens, Betschart considered Port Royal Golf Course, the venue for the Bermuda Championship, his second home. Beyond his time on the course, he also seized every opportunity at previous events to learn from seasoned professionals and worked the tournament, laying the groundwork for his eventual qualification to compete.

Of the chance to play in the professional tournament, Betschart recently shared, “It was an amazing experience … I learned plenty and met some amazing guys. I really enjoyed being part of it.”

Betschart headed to the Southern Texas PGA Junior Golf Tour earlier this year but continues to call Bermuda and the Port Royal Golf Course home. Of the course, he told Golf Digest before the Championship last year, “It’s all in the wind. It’s a tricky course, but when that wind picks up, it just becomes so much more difficult. I think that’s what the players are going to have to look for now and focus on wind.” Wise words from a young and accomplished golfer.

The Butterfield Bermuda Championship will take place at Port Royal Golf Course November 14–17, 2024.
