STEP INTO THE PAST

THIS INTERACTIVE, FUN, AND EDUCATIONAL WALKING TOUR DEPICTS LIFE IN ROYAL NAVAL DOCKYARD IN THE EARLY 1800S AND IT’S GREAT FOR ALL AGES.

HISTORY COMES ALIVE before your eyes on a free historical walking tour of Royal Naval Dockyard. Knowledgeable guides and actors, fully dressed in period costume, will transport you to Dockyard circa the mid-1800s with an interactive, fun, and educational historical skit. On this tour for people of all ages, you’ll discover the historical aspects of breakwaters, fortifications, workshops, and storehouses. Explore modern-day Dockyard whilst learning about the historical significance of some of Dockyard’s most interesting places on a meandering stroll amid its historic walls.

In the entertaining vignette, you’ll meet Captain Brandreth, a Royal Army Engineer who’s part of the team that built Dockyard. The captain possesses a wide range of knowledge about the structures and army life during the mid1860s. Lizzie, an older woman who lived in the area before the Royal Navy and Army soldiers came to Bermuda, remembers a simple life. She resents the soldiers, their interruption, and their lifestyle — particularly the rum that they favour. Barnaby is a freed slave who works as a cooper in the victualling yard. He has followed in his father’s footsteps and is proud of his skills and of his contribution to the military. Finally, you’ll meet Thomas Driver, the agent victualler in charge of procuring and processing food supplies for the Navy, Army, and Marines in Dockyard.

The characters’ costumes are authentic, and their interaction on this historical walking tour is lively, factual, and just plain delightful.
