ON THE BIG SCREEN
Maternal Secrets
The 2018 TV movie Maternal Secrets is a mystery thriller set in Bermuda. When a U.S. state senator (Sean Stolzen) goes missing whilst vacationing with his pregnant girlfriend (Kate Mansi), she’s intent on getting answers. What she discovers is that his estranged mother is on the island and knows more about his disappearance than she’s letting on.
Hopscotch
BERMUDA IS RENOWNED for its pink-sand shorelines and dreamy panoramas, but what you may not know about the island is that, although quaint, it’s made quite a few appearances on the big — and small — screen over the years. The picturesque vistas and turquoise waters have made this an idyllic filming location for everything from action films to comedies.
The Deep
The most notable movie filmed in Bermuda is The Deep, released in 1977 and featuring the talented Jacqueline Bisset and Nick Nolte. The vacationing pair set out on a diving excursion and accidentally discover a lost treasure from a World War II shipwreck, only to be met with problems when they encounter local criminals with their eyes set on the treasure.
If you’re a fan of the movie, there are many locations across the island that you can visit to relive some of the thrilling moments you saw on screen. These include Mangrove Bay Public Wharf, Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, the Cliffs at Marley Beach, the Coral Room & Longtail Terrace, Holy Trinity Church, and St. David’s Lighthouse.
Bermuda Grace
Most of the 1994 TV movie Bermuda Grace was filmed at various locations across the island. In this comedic film, Sam Grace (William Sadler), a Philadelphia-based private detective, teams up with his old friend Trevor Watkins (David Harewood), an English policeman, who both go on the trail of an elusive murderer and jewel thief in Bermuda.
Released in 1980, Hopscotch is an American comedy spy film featuring stars Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson. After retiring, the clever CIA agent Miles Kendig (Matthau) decides to write a tell-all exposing the incompetence of his former boss at the agency. After releasing the first chapter, a round-the-world goose chase ensues as the CIA tries to apprehend him before he releases more chapters. One of the stops on Kendig’s itinerary was Bermuda.
White Squall
Directed by Ridley Scott, White Squall was released in 1996. This gripping film follows the true story of 12 young men on a sea expedition with Ocean Academy when a white squall puts their lives in danger and they’re forced to discover discipline and camaraderie to get out alive. Some of the scenes out at sea were filmed off the coast of Bermuda.
