In addition to the many routes leading to the sandy shoreline, there are two directions on Martha’s Vineyard: “Up Island,” where dramatic cliffs tumble into the Atlantic Ocean while storybook inns, quaint fishing villages, and the small towns of West Tilbury, Chilmark, and Aquinnah
offer rustic charms; and “Down Island,” home to vibrant hamlets like Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown, which preside over soft post-sunset evenings with delectable restaurants and a lively scene.

MARTHA’S VINEYARD IS KNOWN FOR its stunning natural scenery and charming lighthouses, which not only serve as beacons of safety for ships navigating the treacherous waters but are a sight to behold for visitors. The island is home to five exquisite lighthouses, each boasting its
own fascinating history and unique character. Situated predominantly on the north side of the island, these architectural marvels are located near Edgartown and Vineyard Haven, as they were once bustling hubs of commercial activity.

Nestled within the charming town of Edgartown, the Edgartown Lighthouse proudly stands as a quintessential representation of New England’s maritime heritage. Originally built in 1828, it holds the distinction of being the oldest lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard. However, the original structure has since been replaced by the magnificent cast-iron tower that graces the landscape today, erected in 1939. During the summer, visitors have the delightful opportunity to explore, ascending to its pinnacle for an awe-inspiring panorama of the picturesque harbor while chatting with the lighthouse keeper about its rich history.

The Gay Head Lighthouse in Aquinnah is perhaps the most recognizable lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard. Its striking red brick tower sits atop a clay cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Built in 1844, the lighthouse has been guiding ships around the waters of Gay Head for over a century and a half. While the park encompassing the lighthouse welcomes
While West Chop Lighthouse and Cape Poge Lighthouse may require a bit more effort to reach, they are certainly worth the exploration. West Chop Lighthouse, in Vineyard Haven, is not open to the public, as it is currently occupied by the Coast Guard; but visitors can still catch a glimpse of its captivating presence while aboard a ferry or sailing in Vineyard Haven. The Cape Poge Lighthouse, nestled on Chappaquiddick Island, stands as the most secluded lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard. Accessible only by embarking on a lengthy hike or utilizing a fourwheel-drive vehicle, it offers a truly remote experience. Recognized for its historic significance, it was added to the esteemed National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

the late 1600s, this historic town sets the stage for an immersive experience across the centuries, inviting you to stroll its tree-lined streets.
Charming New England shops and galleries within the village center offer a glimpse into the region’s distinctive culture. As you stroll through the streets, don’t forget to snap a picture of the maritime panorama of sailboats and rock jetties in Vineyard Haven Harbor, renowned for its shipbuilding heritage.
A short walk from the ferry terminal leads you to the MV Museum, housed in a former 1890s marine hospital. This fascinating institution houses an impressive collection of maps, manuscripts, artifacts, and photographs that intricately detail the island’s captivating history.
When it comes to dining, Vineyard Haven boasts an array of culinary options. From contemporary American cuisine to tantalizing Pan-Asian flavors,
the town’s restaurants cater to diverse tastes. And for a sweet treat, delightful coffee shops and ice cream cafés are waiting to satisfy your dessert cravings. To conclude the evening on a cultural note, head to the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse, which operates two stages during the summer months, offering a range of theatrical performances and cultural experiences.
Originally known as Cottage City, Oak Bluffs holds a significant place in history as one of the first summer resort communities on the East Coast during the post–Civil War era. The Gilded Age spirit is beautifully preserved in the rows of ornate gingerbread cottages built in the late 19th century, which stand as vibrant testaments to the past. Another cherished relic is the 1876 Flying Horses Carousel, the nation’s oldest operating carousel.

So, have you ever wondered who’s “Martha”? And where is her Vineyard? In 1602, early British explorer Bartholomew Gosnold named the island in honor of his daughter Martha, while the “vineyard” part came from the vines covering the island at the time, some of which can still be seen today.
Oak Bluffs welcomes visitors to its shores with a convenient ferry service from Hyannis. The allure of Inkwell Beach, just steps away from the dock, is so irresistible that people have been known to grab their bags and head straight to the shore. Within walking distance of the ferry, you’ll find a lively central business district centered around Circuit Avenue. This thoroughfare is lined with seafood restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and boutiques, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Outdoor enjoyment takes center stage while visitors enjoy alfresco entertainment at the historic Trinity Park or revel in the emerald greenery of Ocean Park. Lined with Victorian homes, Ocean Park features a charming gazebo-style bandstand, a delightful setting for picnics. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for the annual fireworks show in August, a spectacular event best enjoyed from the park’s expansive grounds. For a quiet moment, find a seat on a bench at East Chop Lighthouse and admire the graceful passing of boats, creating a serene backdrop to the coastal scenery.
Established as the first colonial settlement on Martha’s Vineyard in 1642, Edgartown retains its position as the island’s most populated town. Serving as the county seat, it proudly houses the historic Dukes County Courthouse and Jail. Yet the historic significance of Edgartown extends far beyond these iconic structures.
Taking a stroll through the downtown Historic District, you’ll encounter the magnificent homes of whaling captains, which have gracefully stood for over two centuries. Along the way, you’ll come across the Old Whaling Church and other heritage sites that reflect Edgartown’s remarkable growth during the 19th century.
In addition to its historical allure, Edgartown boasts an enchanting blend of upscale boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries, complementing the town’s maritime character and adding to its distinctive charm.
For sunseekers and beach lovers, the picturesque South Beach awaits, offering a serene setting for sunbathing and swimming. You’ll want to bring a camera for the scenic Edgartown Harbor and the adjacent Chappaquiddick Island, home to the captivating Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge. Edgartown’s picture-perfect charms made it to the big screen in 1975 as a primary filming location for the blockbuster movie Jaws. Fans of the film must stop at the renowned Jaws Bridge at Joseph Sylvia State Beach.
MARTHA'S VINEYARD IS A HAVEN for vacationers and a popular hideaway for Tinseltown castaways like Michael J. Fox, Spike Lee, Larry David, David Letterman, Diane Sawyer, Oprah Winfrey, and Reese Witherspoon. In fact, it has become a beloved home for singer-songwriter Carly Simon. The island also serves as the final resting place of the late John Belushi. Meanwhile, the Vineyard has been the politically correct vacation location of choice for generations of Kennedys, not to mention the Clintons and Obamas.
For over 10,000 years, Aquinnah, situated in the southwest Up Island region, has been the ancestral home of the Wampanoag Tribe. Although British explorers called it Gay Head, the town officially restored its original Wampanoag name of Aquinnah in 1998. Today, the Wampanoags are a sovereign nation celebrating their heritage in Aquinnah with annual events, including the Legends of Moshup Pageant, a reenactment featuring Moshup, a great Wampanoag leader, and Cranberry Day, when elders and youths harvest the signature fruit together and tell tales over an open fire.
You can explore Wampanoag culture and traditions at the Aquinnah Cultural Center, where exhibits and educational programs highlight the Wampanoag experience, while an on-site history museum contains tribal arts and artifacts.
The Center is located near one of the East Coast’s most impressive geological features, the spectacular Aquinnah Cliffs. Dating back millions of years, this national landmark captivates tourists and scientists alike with its brilliant colors and prehistoric fossils; the fossilized remains of whales, shark’s teeth, and petrified quahogs have all been found here. Don’t forget to check if tours are being offered at the Aquinnah Lighthouse, as it provides a scenic vantage point to admire the cliffs and surrounding area.
Once prime grazing land for great herds of sheep during colonial days, Chilmark’s rolling hills and lush fields still house many sheep and livestock farms, many of which welcome visitors for farm tours and tastings from their farmstands.
For a look at another thriving Chilmark tradition, head to the fishing village of Menemsha, whose working waterfront maintains one of the county’s strongest and most vital year-round fishing fleets, monitored by the nearby U.S. Coast Guard station. Watch the fishermen haul in their catches — fish and lobster — which gives new meaning to the word “fresh,” as just-caught seafood is prepared and served at casual dockside eateries or available for takeout at nearby markets.
Chilmark’s beaches, characterized by their windswept and uncrowded nature, are among the most exquisite on the island. Whether you prefer sandy shores or rocky coastlines,
Chilmark offers a variety of breathtaking beach options. Natural areas like the Chilmark Pond Preserve beckon outdoor enthusiasts to indulge in hiking, swimming, fishing, and bird-watching.
Fast Fact: Almost 25 percent of Chilmark residents in the 1800s were hearing impaired. A variant of sign language unique to Martha’s Vineyard was developed in Chilmark to accommodate this population. Much of this language is still used in today’s American Sign Language.
Come for the beaches; stay for the agritourism. This town of historic farmland, scenic beaches; and lush forests has been the agricultural center of Martha’s Vineyard for more than two centuries and continues today.
In addition to a famous weekly farmers market at Grange Hall (twice weekly in the
height of summer), West Tisbury hosts the annual Livestock Show and Agricultural Fair every August, a four-day festival including food, games, and carnival rides, with judged events in everything from best baking and finest vegetables to long-distance skillet throwing and ox harnessing. The beloved event celebrates its 161st year in 2023.
Beyond its agricultural offerings, West Tisbury beckons sightseers with its quintessential New England village center. Here, you can explore the charm of a public library, outdoor sculptures, and a classic country store dating back to 1858. As you wander the town, you’ll come across vintage sea captains’ homes that still belong to their descendants. These picturesque residences stand as testaments to the town’s rich maritime history, and their immaculate preservation adds to the allure of West Tisbury’s streetscape.

The African American Heritage Trail unveiled a plaque in 2021 in memory of Esther, a slave who jumped off the ship Endeavor that was en route to North Carolina and escaped. Martha’s Vineyard boasts six small towns, each with their own unique offerings and distinct personalities. They are Aquinnah, Chilmark, West Tisbury, Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown. Visit them all and see for yourself what makes each one special.
Martha’s Vineyard — along with Cape Cod and Nantucket — was created approximately 2.5 million years ago when huge blocks of ice, some of which were up to two miles thick, progressed into Europe and North America.
Martha’s Vineyard is open yearround, and there’s something happening in every season; but during the peak summer months, the population of about 17,000 jumps to around 200,000!
TO ISLAND LIFE ON MARTHA’S VINEYARD, there are certain individuals who stand out for their unwavering dedication to a cause. Leslie Hurd, a longtime resident of the island, is one such person. As an island-based business, The Black Dog has had the privilege of knowing Hurd and witnessing her immense love for dogs firsthand.
Over the years, our paths crossed when our home office fostered some of her rescues and our office mates adopted pups she rescued. Our island-based general stores have partnered with her organization, Angels Helping Animals Worldwide, for our Doggie Adoption Days; and currently, her organization is the benefactor of our Round Up program. While we may be familiar with who she is and her life’s mission, we want
to share her remarkable tale with all our Black Dog friends.
Hurd’s journey as a real-life doggie hero began many years ago when she rescued a dog and a cat while living in her humble dorm room at Boston University. It was then that she discovered her true calling was rescuing animals in need. Since then, she has dedicated her life to this noble mission.
Her history of helping animals is infinite; she has rescued puppies and their mamas from puppy mills, saved dogs from kill shelters down south, met planeloads of stray animals on runways in South Carolina, and transported animals from faraway states to Massachusetts, bunking in hotels with 20 or more dogs along the way. Hurd has coordinated numerous rescue missions from the Virgin Islands, transporting planeloads of dogs to the mainland. Between Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, she rescued
over 1,000 dogs from Texas to the Florida Panhandle — with the help of country singer Kenny Chesney. The stories of her heroic endeavors are seemingly endless.
But Hurd doesn’t always work alone. Alongside her, she has assembled a formidable team of empathetic, kindhearted individuals who share her passion.
Dr. Cheryl, a retired veterinarian, provides crucial care for the rescued animals. Lynn, an ardent animal lover, has accompanied Hurd on many of her missions, lending her
support every step of the way. And Caroline, a local from Martha’s Vineyard, has provided a foster home for numerous rescues until they find their forever homes. Together, they are a force to be reckoned with.
And with their help, Hurd is building a new facility to house and care for rescue animals until they are adopted. This new compound will sit on a half-acre of land on Cape Cod. Once built, it will include a barn, a quarantine building, and living quarters for full-time help.
Hurd’s charity, Angels Helping Animals Worldwide, is a 501(c) organization that relies 100 percent on donations and grants. Founded in 2014 by Hurd and a few dedicated volunteers, their mission is to transport rescues from areas where there is an overabundance of stray, homeless, and endangered animals to areas where there is a shortage of adoptable pets and to facilitate the adoption process. Through education and increasing awareness, Angels Helping Animals Worldwide strives to build communities where people value animals and treat them with respect and kindness. Known to locals as Tradewinds Dog Park, this is a 70-plus-acre meadow in what once was a small airfield (some planes still land here occasionally, so be aware). Walking trails take you through the meadow and into the woods. Please have your dog on a leash or under immediate control. Bring your own water, but bowls are available, as well as poop bag receptacles.

A great park where you’ll find a stick library to play fetch, as well as poop bag receptacles, water, bowls, and even some balls. Plenty of parking is available, and there are some nice trails to wander.
BEACHES Many dogs like the water as much as we do. However, some restrictions are necessary so that all of us can enjoy the beach. Please doublecheck the signs at the beaches for hours and rules.
Aquinnah Between May 15 and September 15, you can bring your on-leash dog to Lobsterville Beach. Off-season, dogs on a leash are welcome at all beaches.
Chilmark The beaches here welcome dogs only in the offseason (and your dog can be off leash).
Edgartown Hop on a short ferry ride at Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge on Chappaquiddick Island for an adventure with Fido. Cape Poge is a beautiful barrier beach with a salt pond where your dog is welcome throughout the refuge on leash.
You can also take your dog for a sunrise or sunset stroll on Lighthouse Beach and Fuller Beach before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. Vineyard Haven Eastville Beach (right over the drawbridge) is a nice spot to walk your dog on leash. The water is calm, so it’s great for dogs who like to swim.
Oak Bluffs From May through September, along the waterfront, you can visit with your dog before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m. In the offseason, dogs are welcome anytime. You can also walk around the harbor, where you’re sure to meet other dog parents doing the same.
State Beach (Oak Bluffs & Edgartown) Because there are nesting terns and piping plovers, dogs are not welcome between April 1 and August 31.

Martha’s Vineyard boasts plenty of tranquil bodies of water perfect for paddleboarding, such as lakes or ponds, free from boats and buoys. If you want to try stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), choose an open body of water like Aquinnah or book a paddle rental in Menemsha. You can rent water equipment at many local shops.
If you’re a beginner, there’s no need to hesitate. Paddle boards are similar to surfboards but provide enhanced stability for leisurely paddling and SUP yoga. If you’re looking for speed, a displacement-hull paddle board with a pointed nose can offer more efficient movement through waves.

As you pedal, you’ll have the opportunity to coast over the iconic Jaws Bridge, adding a touch of excitement to your journey. Take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline or enhance your visit by embarking on a guided tour of the historic Gay Head Lighthouse, adding an extra layer of excitement to your day.

the Atlantic Ocean and its shores and heathlands and woodlands below them. These colorful cliffs were formed over millions of years by glaciers sculpting away at them. They represent the Vineyard’s unique geological history and serve as cultural landmarks, hosting many species of wildlife and featuring historic lighthouses.
Aquinnah Cliffs are the starting point of a hiking trail leading to Menemsha Hills, an expansive 211-acre preserve housing the second-highest point on Martha’s Vineyard and offering scenic picnicking opportunities and stunning ocean views. With its wetlands and woodland groves, you can easily walk along one of many trails. Just down the road is Menemsha Beach, known for its gorgeous sand and one of Martha’s Vineyard’s most popular spots for fishing.
For those seeking an idyllic beach to stretch their legs and capture the beauty of Aquinnah Cliffs, Moshup Beach is a must-visit destination. This barrier beach offers the perfect blend of crashing surf on one side and tranquil salt- and freshwater ponds on the other. It provides an ideal setting for wildlife observation while offering ample space for families to run and play.

MEET THE CHEF BEHIND ISLAND DELICACIES FROM LAND AND SEA.
WHEN JOE MONTEIRO MOVED TO MARTHA’S VINEYARD, he quickly realized what the island craved: a true oyster bar and an authentic steakhouse
offering culinary excellence with a modern flair.
In 2017, Monteiro launched 19 Raw Oyster Bar; and in 2020, he expanded his vision by taking
over an adjoining space to establish 19 Prime Steakhouse. It quickly became evident that merging both restaurants under one roof would allow him
to offer the best of both land and sea. The concept of combining casual and upscale ambience, incredible bar service, and an unparalleled menu
instantly attracted both locals and visitors.
Monteiro’s journey to becoming chef and owner of 19 Raw and 19 Prime began as a teenager, honing his culinary skills in kitchens across the country and learning from the industry’s finest. Eventually, he found himself in Miami Beach, Florida, where he became the executive chef of an award-winning seafood restaurant. Seeking change and new opportunities, he moved to the Vineyard in 2011, where he would meet his lovely wife, Emily. It didn’t take long for them to realize Edgartown would be their forever home, where they are raising two beautiful children and living their dreams as active members of this coastal, closeknit community.
Year after year, locals and visitors return to savor
the innovative and exceptionally flavorful dishes created by Monteiro, known for his culinary expertise, imposing size, and vibrant personality. Even those unfamiliar with Monteiro when they first walk into his restaurants undoubtedly leave with a lasting impression. When you meet him, be sure to ask for his recommendation on the Wash Ashore beer to pair with the day’s farmfresh oysters, as he co-founded the local company with three close friends. Alternatively, dive straight into his “shucking amazing” dishes, such as the butter-poached lobster tails and the 36-ounce dry-aged porterhouse topped with house-made béarnaise. Either way, you’ll quickly realize you’ve not only made a new friend but also found your favorite spot on the island for local indulgence.
Discover a world of culinary delights in Oak Bluffs, where innovative flavors await. From global cuisines to delectable seafood, comforting pub fare, and beloved homestyle dishes, this charming town on Martha’s Vineyard has something to please every palate.
Start your day with a mouthwatering breakfast of Southern-style shrimp and grits, a true delight for the senses. For lunch, indulge in a slice of pizza followed by a heavenly cannolo. As the sun sets, immerse yourself in the rich flavors of the Caribbean with authentic Jamaican jerk chicken or indulge in the tender goodness of braised oxtails.
To journey south of the border, sip on signature spicy margaritas and relish in the pleasure of freshly made tortillas, hand pressed just moments before they reach your plate. If you’re craving Middle Eastern specialties, Oak Bluffs has you covered with homemade hummus and baba ghanoush readily available to tantalize your taste buds. Of course, seafood takes center stage in Oak Bluffs, as the town’s eateries excel at crafting quick and luscious dishes. Treat yourself to a classic lobster roll or savor the satisfying crunch of a perfectly prepared fish sandwich. For a more leisurely dining experience, sit down and indulge in delectable offerings like sea scallops with golden risotto, ethically harvested grilled swordfish, or chilled shellfish straight from the raw bar.
For a laid-back and casual meal, pub-style dining is a favorite among both locals and visitors. Delight in a variety of dishes, including clam strips, crispy beerbattered shrimp, flavorful scallops with fries, mouthwatering wings, satisfying wraps, juicy burgers, and specialty sandwiches. Wash it all down with a refreshing locally brewed beer, immersing yourself in the true island spirit.
Some establishments even combine delicious dining with entertainment options like bowling or catching a movie, creating an unforgettable evening of fun for the young and young at heart.

Step off the ferry and into the great eateries of the harbor town of Vineyard Haven, where casual cafés blend with fine-dining restaurants, grab-and-go markets, and coffee shops. The early bird catches pastries, pancakes, and other from-scratch goodies, along with unexpected eyeopeners like the “spicy woofer,” with two fried eggs, bacon, spinach, fresh jalapeños, and chipotle mayo on your choice of bread.
As chefs make the most of the bounty from local waters, they delight in seasonally focused menus that showcase the best local ingredients. One standout dish is the arctic char, served with a flavorful fava bean and tarragon risotto, roasted cipollini, and a vibrant herb salad. Another favorite is pairing a local catch with adobo polenta cake and pancettacorn succotash. Then there’s olive oil–poached halibut with bok choy and charred leeks, not to mention pan-seared striped bass with pea puree, garlic panisse, Calabrian chili, and red snapper seared with rum sauce.
On the casual side, you’ll savor poke bowls with tuna or salmon, shrimp and fish tacos, fried oysters, local quahog chowder, and lobster rolls. And if seafood’s not your thing, don’t worry! Savory, delectable options include beef short ribs, golden-brown chicken, stacked portobello mushrooms, wok-fired green beans with pork, and Brazilian steaks.
Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner, there’s no shortage of tasty temptations on the menu across this charming town.
Is there anything better than fresh-caught oysters and a pitcher of craft beer on a warm summer day? Many restaurants in Edgartown think that’s the ultimate Vineyard dining experience, but then again, there are quite a few not-to-be-missed delectable delights to choose from: prime porterhouse steaks, Wagyu burgers, yellowfin tuna tartare, decadent desserts like flourless chocolate cake bathed in caramel glaze, and vegetables from local farms prepared so creatively, even the kids will love them.
Or you could try something unexpected, like Cape Cod ceviche with vinegar chips and limehabanero jugo. Lobster rolls? Of course, but how about lobster caviar sliders? Or side dishes like jalapeño creamed corn and smoked tomato grits? And you can’t forget the Vineyard staple: baked or broiled cod.
Edgartown’s chef-driven menus cater to all palates, offering a delightful fusion of surf and turf. From grab-and-go salads and bowls to indulgent brunches featuring lobster tail Benedict and mimosas and the pleasure of savoring wild-caught fish and shellfish while embracing the captivating harbor ambience, you can surely eat your heart out in this food lover’s paradise.

YOUR VISIT IS NOT COMPLETE UNTIL YOU’VE EXPLORED THE VINEYARD’S UNIQUE RETAIL EXPERIENCES.
written by Lisa Simundsonisn’t in the sandy beaches or coastal scenes but, rather, in the tree-lined main and side streets that nestle in shops brimming with books, antiques, sporting gear, and beautifully crafted display pieces for the home.
It is a true paradise for those with an affinity for retail exploration, with numerous clothing boutiques, galleries with exquisite artwork, and specialty emporiums dedicated to originaldesign jewelry and accessories. Martha’s Vineyard defies the conventional notion that bigger is always better. In fact, the island’s retail experience is characterized by its emphasis on personalized service and individuality.
With few exceptions, the shops and boutiques are independently owned, allowing for a more intimate and personalized shopping experience. It is not uncommon to find the proprietors themselves readily available, offering bespoke consultations and assistance. Visitors are encouraged to leisurely explore the diverse offerings, taking all the time they need
to discover that perfect item for themselves or as a thoughtful gift for loved ones back home. While exceptional shopping opportunities can be found throughout the island, specific retail hubs stand out. These hubs serve as vibrant centers where one can indulge in a fulfilling shopping experience.
Main Street in Vineyard Haven beckons with its charming blend of historic homes, the public library, and a bustling retail district as a thoroughfare destined for exploration and discovery.
You make island memories. We make island heirlooms.

WHEN CORINNA
OCHOA first visited Martha’s Vineyard in the summer of 2019, she immediately fell in love — so much so, in fact, that she packed up her car back in Santa Barbara, California, and drove across the country later that year.
One thing she soon noticed was a lack of swimwear options on the island. When the opportunity arose for her to rent a retail space, she jumped at the possibility. The result was Lani Beach Club, a swimwearand beachwearfocused shop that Ochoa first opened in May 2021.
At Lani Beach Club, you’ll find styles that are perfect for Martha’s Vineyard; but they’re made using a process that’s less harmful to the earth. For example, Ochoa focuses on eco-friendly styles by carrying swimsuits that are made with
recycled fabrics.
“Sustainable swimsuits are made using plastics that already exist rather than producing new plastic,” she says.
“There are several production companies that take plastic water bottles that are either removed from the ocean or stopped before they reach it, as well as ghost fishing nets. Swimsuit brands will purchase this fabric to have it cut and sewn into the swimsuits that we will purchase for our shop.”
The brands she buys from are all small businesses, and the majority are women owned. “Doing my part to minimize damage done to the earth is my main motivator,” she says. “I want to encourage and support companies that are making the effort to be as sustainable as possible. Being able to provide these options to the island community when they are normally difficult to find is the reason I enjoy coming to work every day.”
Open May through September, Lani Beach Club has a large collection of swimsuits, accessories, and clothing options for all ages. This includes swimsuits for men, women, and children; beach chairs made from recycled plastic; cotton and linen shirts, shorts, and dresses; Turkish beach towels; an array of reef-safe and mineral sunscreens, as well as selftanning products; plant-based sunglasses, jewelry, and hair accessories; island-made jewelry; handwoven straw hats and baskets; and hair, skin, and lip products.
If your summer vacation takes you to Vineyard Haven, put Lani Beach Club on your list. In addition to her devotion to eco-friendliness,
Ochoa enjoys helping her customers find a bathing suit that makes them feel comfortable and confident. “A majority of women dread getting a new bathing suit, but I hope to welcome them into an environment where they feel supported and eager to embrace their bodies,” she says. “We are always able to help, whether it’s by giving suggestions on what to try on, what items
are popular gifts, creating custom/ special orders, or sharing info on what the rest of the island has to offer.”
Lani Beach Club is located at 25 Main Street in Vineyard Haven. For more information, visit www.lanibeachclub.com or check out their Instagram page @lanibeachclub.
FRIENDLY SELECTIONS, YOU’LL FEEL GREAT ABOUT IT, TOO.
As soon as you step into The Black Dog Tavern in Vineyard Haven, you can’t help but feel the warmth and nostalgia. The Tavern, founded in 1971 by Sailing Captain Robert Douglas and named after his beloved rescue pup,
was the first yearround restaurant on Martha’s Vineyard. It opened as a humble eatery serving stacks of pancakes and steaming mugs of chowder, quickly becoming a local hangout where people could relax, enjoy good food,
and spend time with friends. The Tavern still exudes a cozy New England feel, with nautical photos and memorabilia adorning the walls, menu items playfully named after local legends and folklore, a breathtaking view of Vineyard
Haven Harbor, and an atmosphere that remains as lively as ever.
Just down the road, the newly renovated Black Dog Bakery Café on State Road offers a tranquil outdoor patio where visitors can dine in the fresh island air. Its expansive wine and craft beer selections make it the perfect place to enjoy a drink outside or at its brand-new indoor bar space. While the space has been upgraded, the bakery case is still filled with the
house-made pastries, cookies, and pies the Bakery Café has always been known for, including the famous Black Out Cake.
Over the years, The Black Dog brand has continued to grow. Their signature apparel and accessories can be found in general stores in coastal towns from Maine to Florida. Each store is unique but pays homage to the brand’s island roots. Sketches from Captain Douglas’s latest endeavor, a rebuild of the tall ship Shenandoah (recently donated to the island-based, nonprofit FUEL program) line the store walls, while marine antiques can be found throughout.
The Black Dog’s “life off the leash” philosophy has led them to their latest endeavor: rum and canned cocktails. Their small-batch rums include a cocktail-ready
3-year aged white rum and sippable 7- and 12-year aged dark rums. The Black Dog Tavern canned cocktails are available in refreshing flavors like pomegranate lemonade, cranberry lime, and rum and ginger, making them the perfect beverages for the beach or boat. You can try them for yourself; they can be found at Jim’s Package Store in Oak Bluffs or any Kappy’s location.
The Black Dog is still partly run by family members and crew members who have been around since its earliest days. Their dedication, along with a loyal fan base, has helped the brand stay true to its roots, even as it has grown beyond its island origins. The Black Dog is more than just a brand; it’s an enduring island tradition celebrating good times and longstanding friendships.
A leisurely walk along Oak Bluffs’ tree-lined Circuit Avenue will take you past quirky and delightful souvenir shops selling T-shirts, sweatshirts, and island novelties. You’ll also find resort wear, unique crafts, locally made jewelry, and coastal home décor.
While exploring, take a break and indulge yourself at the irresistible sweet shops scattered throughout the area. Treat your taste buds to delectable fudge, tempting candy, refreshing ice cream, or a revitalizing cup of coffee. Recharge your energy reserves, ensuring you’re ready for more shopping adventures.
Your shopping journey continues at the enthralling Dockside Marketplace and Marina, overlooking the captivating Oak Bluffs Harbor. In addition to enjoying breathtaking sunsets and relishing waterfront dining, you’ll have the opportunity to browse through a collection of shops offering an array of branded Vineyard mementos and collectibles. Explore the fascinating world of Harbor Lights Lighthouses, discover fine jewelry inspired by the sea and the island’s allure, and find souvenirs that cater to everyone on your list, including novelty toys, T-shirts, key chains, postcards, and eye-catching wall art.
Today’s travelers are seeking ways in which they can highlight and support locally owned black businesses in the destinations they visit. Martha’s Vineyard is home to many artists, designers, and makers creating a bevy of beautiful unique items; and we encourage you to support the island’s ever-growing BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) community. This is a great way to contribute to the growth of the local economy and help sustain a diverse and inclusive community. Formerly a one-engine firehouse, Shaw and co-owner Sue Dawson moved into the historic building in 2006 and completed a full renovation. The picturesque gallery features a beautiful outdoor space with a front lawn and an awardwinning garden area where locals and visitors gather during the Arts District Strolls. Inside, you’ll find everything from full-color seascapes to black-and-white editorial work for local newspaper the Vineyard Gazette. According to Shaw’s website, Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer Stan Grossfeld once remarked, “Alison is to the Vineyard what Georgia O’Keeffe is to the American Southwest.”
Shaw and Dawson offer photography mentorships, workshops, and intensive courses to those interested in capturing the natural beauty of Martha’s Vineyard through their own lens. If you’re looking for the perfect gift or a unique memento of your trip, Shaw’s photographic talents come alive in her books, notecards, and fine art prints. Martha’s Vineyard has established itself as a desirable location for investment opportunities. With stringent conservation regulations safeguarding the island’s unparalleled quality of life, the demand for real estate on this picturesque island remains fervent and highly competitive.
New residential construction, renovations, restorations, and commercial projects have soared in the last several years. This increase can be attributed to various factors, such as travel restrictions that limited air travel and encouraged people to seek refuge in their second homes or invest in properties on the island. The allure of working remotely, partially or full-time, while enjoying the serene environment of the Vineyard has attracted a wave of individuals who temporarily became our neighbors. The influx of newcomers impacted our infrastructure and various essential services rose to the occasion. Grocery stores, schools, and doctors all stepped up their efforts to accommodate the growing population. Some of the island’s attractions include top schools, beautiful beaches, land bank conservation properties for hiking and swimming access that will not be developed, and a lively arts and culture scene filled with musicians, artists, writers, artisans, dancers, and museums. It is also a haven for people looking for a safe place to raise their families. Over the past 25 years, many newcomers have embarked on entrepreneurial ventures, establishing their own businesses and contributing to the island’s economic growth.
As the pandemic subsides, the real estate market is undergoing surprising shifts. New listings are commanding higher prices than expected while inventory levels remain low. The island is witnessing a surge in renovations and restorations of older homes. With rising interest rates, families and investors are liquidating off-island assets and making cash purchases on the Vineyard. Quick investment opportunities for buying, fixing, and reselling properties are scarce, so buyers are adapting their plans for the long term. Many purchasers intend to rent out their newly acquired properties for a while to take advantage of the thriving vacation rental market and enjoy the property for a few weeks each year until the financial climate stabilizes. Property managers and brokerage firms play a crucial role in maximizing income from these rentals, handling everything from marketing to collecting deposits and taxes on behalf of the owners.
There is a diverse range of homes in terms of size and design on the island. You can find everything from cozy studio apartments located above shops in town to expansive historical or contemporary residences situated near or even on the waterfront. In many neighborhoods, you’ll encounter a blend of old and new properties, offering a variety of housing options. However, it’s important to note that certain communities have established associations with specific covenants and regulatory review processes in place. These neighborhoods may enforce strict regulations concerning home dimensions, architectural style, setback requirements, accessory buildings, pet policies, and more. These guidelines ensure a cohesive aesthetic and uphold the character of the community. As the number of properties entering the market slows down, each available home holds the potential to become someone’s new residence. This scarcity heightens the desirability of every property for potential buyers, making the competition for available homes more intense.
