Taking Part in God’s Cycle of Sowing and Reaping the
The mower roars into life as I shove the clutch lever into gear. The horses lunge into their traces at the new growl of the engine and chattering of the mower. I guide them into the first round. The rich alfalfa falls.
Today marks the first day of haying season. This was decided after Dad inspected the field, calculated when we wanted hay, allowed for how much other hay we need to cut and repeatedly checked that allimportant weather forecast.
So, this forenoon my task was to prepare to get the haybine (mower) into the field after an entire winter of sitting idle in the shed.
Sister Susann and I get started by pulling out the wagons sitting in front of it in the tool shed. Now we can get to our red and yellow New Holland haybine. After dragging the bulky mower forward, Susann gases it up while I grease it, change the battery, add hydraulic fluid and check the height. I try the motor. It purrs.
Sister Ramah and Susann both help with assembling our horsepower. They pull the tall, black horses out of their stalls and help bridle them after I throw the heavy harnesses on their backs. Toby and Tony are the big geldings in the middle. They are wiry, tough athletes who don’t seem to have had their condition affected much by a long, easy winter. We put a few of our older mares on the outside, making four abreast. Abby and Judy are very black, very pregnant and very well fed. They don’t walk so much as waddle – looking much like a pair of big black woodchucks bookending our team.
Since we have a narrow gate to squeeze through after we’re hitched, we leave the far left-hand horse off for now. I don’t particularly enjoy taking out gateposts with a haybine. There was one time I broke off both … but that’s another story.
We hook the geldings’ collar to the neck yoke and the neck yoke to the tongue. This will let the horses hold us back and give us reverse if we need it. Then we fasten all the traces in the back to the evener, giving us forward power.
I grab the lines, talk to the horses, and we’re off, haybine lumbering behind. We squeeze past the wagons sitting on the side of the lane on our way to the field. Then the gate. As I’ve been taught, I try to crowd the team to the left. We make it through without damaging the gateway. This is not something to take for granted. Just ask – no, don’t.
Susann, who has led Abby, the fourth horse, down here, brings her up to the other horses. We add her to the team. Now we kick it in gear and let the hungry mower begin to gobble up the gorgeous green hay. The geldings lunge forward; they’re a bit rusty the first time this spring. We’ll work off a lot of their excess energy today.
The first round is the trickiest because we need to go counterclockwise around the field and get the far side of the mower as close to the fence as possible without clipping it. This accomplished, we can go clockwise and make the still ticklish second round. Here the horses have to crowd the fence. It is on the third round that we can widen the mower out to the normal mowing setting and settle into a routine.
And it is a pleasant routine. The air is still cool on this May day, making it easy for the laboring horses. The sun shines earnestly out of the blue sky on our lush green surroundings. Birds flit about the field. The mower purrs through the rich harvest God has provided. And the horses and I, we get to be part of the Creator’s cycle of sowing and reaping, of sunshine and rain, of labor and rest. It is pleasant.
