We Can All Learn An Economic Lesson From Frugal Fred the epiphany
“When the going gets tough, the tough will …” (fill in the blank).
Although we still have many blessings to be thankful for in this area, the going is a bit tougher at the present time than many of us are accustomed to.
“Going” in this case meaning the current economic conditions across the country and especially right here in northern Indiana. Slow jobs or no jobs means less money to spend.
We Hoosiers are adjusting to this in various ways. Perhaps some are becoming creative in finding sources of income.
“Necessity is the mother of invention” they say. Many of us would probably consider taking certain jobs we otherwise may have held in disdain. Time off work, instead of being welcomed, is perhaps met with sinking feelings.
Probably the most universal response to the current recession, though, is attempting to live more frugally – “tightening the belts,” “cutting back,” whatever you wish to call it.
People may skip vacations, use coupons, buy used items rather than new and in general cut down on the cost of living.
Thinking of living cheaply recalls stories my father enjoys telling of a man renowned for thriftiness.
This character was known around his home area for the extreme methods he employed to overcome spending money.
For anonymity’s sake we could call the man the “Titan of Thriftiness” or just plain “Tightwad.”
For simplicity’s sake, we’ll just call him Frugal Fred.
These stories, while amusing, may shed some light on how little we could get by on if we really had to.
One story was related by the local blacksmith. Fred would come into the blacksmith shop to procure shoes for his horse. Fred would, of course, put the shoes on the horse himself, rather than hiring the blacksmith to do it. In the process, he saved a little money.
Not enough money was saved by this practice, though. Instead of buying new horseshoes, Fred would pick through the blacksmith’s bin of castoff, worn-out horseshoes in an attempt to find a pair that would fit his horse and might still have a few miles left on them.
The blacksmith tolerated this for a time, but finally was fed up with the idea of Fred’s horse constantly running on wornout shoes.
One day, while Fred was picking through the bin, the blacksmith reached up on the rack and grabbed a pair of brand-new horseshoes. The blacksmith knew the correct size from observing Fred picking out shoes over the years.
The blacksmith handed the shoes to a startled Fred and said, “Here, try these on your horse.”
Fred was caught speechless for a few seconds, but when he recovered, he asked the important question. “How much will these cost me?”
The blacksmith quickly replied, “Nothing. I’ll just give you those.”
Fred pondered this for a few moments, looking down at the new horseshoe in his hand then back up at the blacksmith. With an incredulous tone in his voice, Fred queried, “You mean they’re free? Those horseshoes won’t cost me anything?”
“Yes,” replied the blacksmith. “They’re free. Try them on your horse.”
Fred blinked a few times when something occurred to him. “Well, if that’s the price,” he said. “I’ll take another pair.”
Locals would tell how Fred would come to the flea market at the auction barn and hang around the fruit vendors’ stands. If the vendors had fruit they deemed overripe or damaged, Fred was often able to have the fruit for nothing.
Legend has it, Fred sometimes took brown, overripe bananas home and had his wife can them.
Canned bananas anyone?
Fred and his wife reportedly spent less than $50 each on personal expenses for a whole year- a remarkable feat, even though it was several decades ago.
That figure may also explain why Fred could be seen sometimes wearing a pair of shoes that did not match. Somewhere he probably got a shoe for nothing.
The local sale barn annually held anniversary auctions where they passed out free popcorn. Someone witnessed Fred repeatedly going through the free popcorn line and reported this to the manager of the auction.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that Fred had been taking his free popcorn out, placing it in his buggy and returning to the line for more.
After a talk with the manager, Fred agreed to take only what popcorn he could eat at the auction.
Yes, Fred may have taken frugality to extremes. However, a ditch lies on each side of the road and perhaps we were in the ditch on the opposite side of Fred. My spending habits may have been plenty loose.
But while we’re in the ditch anyway, maybe we can find a discarded shoe or some overripe bananas. Happy saving!

MISSION & MINISTRY
Many of the inmates incarcerated in the USA are forgotten or abandoned by family and friends. It is our belief that God still has a plan and an unmeasured love for these broken individuals. The mission of Christmas Behind Bars is to reach the souls of the incarcerated for Christ, and offer them new life in Him: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17).
WHO WE ARE
Christmas Behind Bars started many years ago, visiting one county jail at Christmas with small gift packages, letting the inmates know that they are not forgotten and that God still loves them. We understand the need for an inward transformation that can only come through Christ. We have expanded to a ministry that visits prisons all throughout the year. From the founder’s conversion from a life of drugs and incarceration, to a new life found in Christ, full of meaning and a passion for the broken, to hundreds of individuals who have volunteered to hand-assemble thousands of care packages monthly, Christmas Behind Bars has been able to grow, reaching people for Christ throughout the country!
