Caden & Lyndi

FROM THE VENDOR'S PERSPECTIVE

How does a Mother (and Father) of the groom, who own an event design and production company, help plan and design their son’s wedding without getting in the way of the bride and her family?

Communication was key! Both families come from the same school of thought...wise spending, nothing over-thetop and too flashy, we’ve been raised with good values and practical thinking. Keeping our friendship with the Bride’s family was a top priority. We wanted nothing to jeopardize that relationship. But what do you do when so many friends, family and colleagues expect this to be ‘the wedding of the Century’?! After-all, you do own Merry Me Events and have done thousands of weddings over the years. I did what I always try to do first. I prayed, “God, whatever this ends up being, let it glorify you,” and so the process began.

Regardless if you’re the parents of the bride or parents of the groom and whether you’re in this industry or not, the “budget talk” is the best place to start. Having the conversation about money, with all contributing parties, before any decisions are made, will benefit you in so many ways throughout the planning. Determine the things that matter most and pour your ideas and vision into those details. And for those items that don’t rate high, don’t sweat it so you don’t have to waste time and money. There are a gazillion ideas to see on Pinterest, magazines and social media…hone in on what matters most to you, then focus on those things.

Design is the part of the planning process that makes my heart beat fast. I’ve been doing this for 28 years now and I still find joy and thrill when I’m considering how we can transform an atmosphere into something breathtaking and memorable for the couple.

Lyndi and Caden wanted there wedding in a space that Merry Me has never been. That was no small task. We don’t have endless possibilities here in Michiana. Learning more about the vibe and design Lyndi was hoping for, I considered a warehouse or a vacant, raw space would be the perfect, blank canvas to work within! I was on the hunt for an abandoned warehouse somewhere within a 30 mile radius of the church in South Bend. Nothing. Nobody felt comfortable committing to renting space more than a year out. If they had a buyer, they would sell, leaving me no guarantee the venue would be available.

I had another idea! Let’s plan a design in my dear friends’, Sarah and Aaron Johnson, airport hangar as Plan B. As we got closer to the date (and before invitations needed to be sent out) the look and design would translate great in either space. Questions began to pop into my head, how would I sell this look to the Hurt family? This is their only daughter, how am I going to ask them to consider a garage full of airplanes? However, during a site visit to the hangar, half-way through the tour, Lyndi's dad, Steve, asked me, "Why does this need to be Plan B? This Place is awesome!"

The challenge ahead of our team was to transform the atmosphere, without going over the top, choosing colors and soft textures to warm up and create an inviting space. To hold back and not do all the things, but to carefully curate all the RIGHT things. I gathered our team for a brainstorming session on-site, with sketch pad in hand and we came up with a plan. It adapted and shifted, but stayed on track with the main elements from start to finish.

Lyndi wanted to know some of what we were doing, but not everything. We included Caden and Lyndi in a lot, but wanted to keep some things a surprise. They attended the delicious cake tasting with Carmella at Macri’s Bakery and an outstanding food tasting with Jeff and his team at Navarre Catering. Lyndi and her mom, Carol, came

to our design studio for her flower and design demo meeting to give them a glimpse of what we had in store. Seeing the smiles and getting the approval that she loved it all, really charged me and gave me a sense of peace and excitement that we were on track with her vision and not just ours.

It was important to both of them, that we sprinkled little touches to honor Caden’s sister Lilli, our sweet angel who unexpectedly went to heaven 2 years ago. Lyndi included her as an honorary bridesmaid in the bridal party; surprised us and pinned her fingerprint imprint and a tiny crown on her bouquet wrap - Caden pinned these inside his suit coat; her giggle was heard at the start of the processional and there were many more. We created a beautiful memory display that read “Here’s to our Angels, they have the best seat in the house!” and included all of our family members, no longer with us.

Everything was lined up according to plan and anticipation grew as the day came near. We knew having a sunny day would be ideal, but the layout would work in rain or shine. It’s important to always have a back-up plan if any activities are taking place outside.

The God-honoring ceremony was so beautifully thought through with the help of Lyndi’s uncle Ben, who did the officiating. The large, wooden cross, borrowed from Cade’s home church, was front and center at the altar. A prayer led by a dear friend, was perfectly planned to surround the couple and blanket them in God’s provision.

We wanted movement from the minute the guests arrived, until the end of the night. Our carefully thought out timeline would do just that! We started with Blammo band for the tented cocktail lounge placed just outside the hangar doors. When the bridal party arrived, we kicked off with introductions in an “East Coast Style” of dancing. Celebration was in the air and the party had begun with a bang!

Two of my favorite reception moments were the reveal to Cade and Lyndi and the unveiling for the guests. We kept the dinner reception off limits to all the guests so our newlyweds could see the space first! Their look said it all and gave us the stamp of approval! When the giant hangar door slowly opened, it was Caden and Lyndi who welcomed their guests into their party!

The dinner, a hybrid of family style and plated meal, was outstanding and executed with perfection from Navarre Catering. Matthew, from 27E took over the dance floor and kept it full all night long!

There’s nothing we would change, only that the night could’ve lasted longer and that time could stand still. It was truly one of the best days ever!

Gown

Our bride, Jena, looked stunning in her gown from Simply Yours Bridal. The front of the gown looked so classy and elegant, but the back of the gown was the showstopper! The lace trimming and the buttons cascading down to the end of the train of the dress were breathtaking!

Hair&Makeup

Her makeup, created by Allee Makeup, looked fresh and feminine. The light pink blush and lips added a subtle touch to Jena’s smokey eyes. Her hair, done by Wild Rose Hair Artistry, looked incredibly elegant. It embraced the casino glam we were looking for!

AAYS Event Rentals aaysrental.com (574) 256-1110

Design

AAYS Event Rentals drew inspiration from retro casino weddings, adding an elegant and modern twist. The black and white color scheme, accented with copper, perfectly complemented the floral arrangements designed by Poppies. The tablescape exuded romance, with candles lining the aisle and surrounding the tables, creating an intimate and picturesque ambiance throughout the room.

Floral

Poppies created a stunning floral design for our retro casinostyled shoot, featuring a luxurious blend of white phalaenopsis orchids, toffee and shimmer roses, copper Fuji mums, and white lisianthus. They added texture and depth with white hydrangeas, copper ruscus, Queen Anne’s lace, white larkspur, magnolia leaves, and dried lunaria, perfectly capturing the shoot's elegant and modern aesthetic. The result was a breathtaking arrangement that elevated the entire setting.

You can never go wrong when you order your cake from SweetEm’s Cake Shoppe. We loved the classic all white cake for this stylized shoot. The beaded and textured tiers, along with some simple floral from Poppies, was the perfect touch.

Tuxedo

The groom, Tyler, looked incredibly dapper in his classic black and white tux with a bow tie from Louie’s Tux Shop. We couldn’t choose between the white or black jacket, so we showcased both—and we're so glad we did! After all, outfit changes aren't just for the bride!

THE BRIDE'S PERSPECTIVE

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING VISION

My wedding vision was florals. I love flowers - all types and all colors. I knew I wanted that to be what people walked away from the wedding day talking about, all of the beautiful flowers! I also knew for sure one of our wedding colors would be purple. It has truly been my favorite color all my life. I even had them dye the color of our wedding cake to be purple on the inside. Our colors ended up being lavender and hunter green. Ryan is a huge Green Bay Packers fan and from the start said he wanted to wear a green suit. The purple dresses and the green suits complemented the flowers beautifully. The pergola we got married under was covered in a mix of flowers. It was my favorite part of the wedding day and could not have been any more beautiful!

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING DAY

Our wedding day was May 18, 2024 at White Hawk Country Club in Crown Point, IN. It was truly perfect! We could not have asked for better weather all weekend long. Our wedding day went so smooth from start to finish which let us be able to just enjoy the day and take everything in. Seeing all the details come together and our vision brought to life after a year of planning is so amazing

and all I could do was smile the entire day! During the whole ceremony, it felt like just Ryan and I were there and I had no nerves at all. I would describe the whole day as magical. From our entrance walking into to the reception under a tunnel of LED balloons, to our first dance feeling like we were floating through the steps, to taking sunset photos, it all felt like magic!

YOUR ADVICE TO ENGAGED COUPLES

My advice to engaged couples would be to book all your vendors as soon as you can. That way you can hopefully work with who you want. It may seem like a lot to do everything big like that right away but I definitely think it is worth it. Vendors book up fast and far in advance and they really do help make sure your wedding day runs smoothly. Once you have them all booked, I would also work on any other details you can and order anything you may want for the wedding day. Then you can enjoy the rest of your engagement feeling good knowing the big things are checked off and not feel stressed. Especially once it gets close to the wedding day, you’ll be happy you got majority done way in advance. Also, this is a special time to remember, so take it all in!

Blending elegance with color, This styled shoot captured timeless beauty.

This styled shoot beautifully showcased the combined talents of each vendor, blending elegance with vibrant color and creating a visual symphony of sophistication. Under the Veil and Makeup by Krissy V worked their magic, infusing glamour and beauty into our models with effortless precision. Sage Bridal House provided a dress that was both unique and timeless, perfectly complementing our bride’s look and adding an air of classic romance. Purple Door Bridal Boutique added a touch of whimsy with a flower girl dress designed for twirling and dancing, and bringing youthful joy to the scene.

Every detail of the shoot came together flawlessly, from the intricate paper artistry by Your Little Details to the stunning floral arrangements by Honey and Sage, which added a lush, organic feel to the setting. The captivating table design by Wilson Events by Design was a masterpiece in itself, combining chic elements with thoughtful touches that elevated the entire ambiance. New Adventure Productions Photography expertly captured the venue and vendor contributions in breathtaking photos, preserving the essence of the day in every shot. Fun elements, like an audio guest book from Laughbooth that encouraged guests to leave heartfelt messages, and the delicious, artfully crafted desserts from Whoa Annie’s Bakery, added warmth and charm, making the shoot not only visually stunning but also truly memorable for all involved.

THE BRIDE'S PERSPECTIVE

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING VISION

VENDORS

Venue & Caterer

With our original wedding dream to be married on a mountain side, identical to how we got engaged, we pivoted and did our best to transform the church and reception hall into a whimsical yet timeless floral meadow. We worked hard to transform our northwest Indiana venue into a floral-fairy-dreamland, while keeping a classy vibe, so that we are able to look back at our wedding photos at 50 years and not cringe inside. However, our reception goal was to have a music and food driven party where everyone could relax, dance, and sing the night away. Snack and food options for all to love!

We transformed our venue into a whimsical floral dreamland, creating a timeless celebration filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING DAY

Starting bright and early, our wedding day was a whirlwind, and was over far too soon. The reception hall was transformed by the OCD-hyperactive bride who decorated to her hearts content with the help of her beautiful wedding party and family. They got to work as soon as the doors opened. Then on the gorgeous sunny June day, she walked down the aisle in a pair of bejeweled (and very painful) heels, escorted by her younger brother, to meet her handsome groom, who had spent the morning sleeping in and relaxing. After a traditional ceremony officiated by her father in her childhood church, the newlyweds and their lively bridal party hopped on a wild party bus for photos. A surprise spring shower interrupted the session, sprinkling the bride and groom with good luck and sending everyone laughing and dashing back to the bus. The evening wrapped up at the reception, where they danced the night away, fueled by love, happiness, cupcakes, and a midnight pizza snack. It was the perfect day—one I wish I could relive every day for the rest of my life.
