TGA Premier Junior Golf Launches School-Based Activation and Business Model in Canada Leading youth sports franchise company to grow the game and enrich the lives of students in Canadian schools London, Ontario – TGA Premier Junior Golf (TGA), the largest school-based junior golf program in North America, announces it has launched its innovative youth sports business in Canada with two new franchise territories in London, and Sault Ste. Marie – Sudbury. TGA (Teach-Grow-Achieve) has become a global leader in growing the game through its self-sustaining activation model that makes golf accessible, available and affordable for all youth. The company launched its first international franchise business in Spain in 2012, and now is bringing its successful school-based business model to schools across Canada. Joe Barnes and Brian Miller have become the owners of TGA of London, while Darren Hore has acquired TGA of Sault Ste. Marie and Greater Sudbury. In addition, Barnes and Miller have also negotiated the TGA master-development rights to expand the TGA business model throughout Canada. Barnes, a college finance professor who helped to build Canada’s largest Century 21 franchise operation, and Miller, an educator for over 30 years, have together owned dozens of successful businesses including several in the golf industry. “It is our belief that TGA will deliver a significant part of the solution to many of golf’s problems by helping to grow and

Canada is the great people we've partnered with to develop this proven business model to grow the game of golf,” said TGA chief operating officer, Steve Tanner. “We are thrilled to have people like Joe, Brian, and Darren, with their impressive credentials, joining the TGA organization and setting the bar high for the first of hopefully many Canadian franchises.” rejuvenate golf, by making it fun and accessible for youth,” Barnes said. “With Brian’s teaching and coaching experience in schools and my golf and business background, the opportunity to bring the TGA school-based model to Canada seemed designed for us.” Hore also brings extensive business ownership and education experience as the owner of a Montessori school in Sault Ste. Marie. He discovered TGA while exploring alternate business opportunities that could complement his operation of the school. "I like that the TGA program not only introduces students to the game of golf but it also introduces them to common social courtesies and practical life skills that they can use every day throughout their lifetime,” said Hore. TGA, which was launched in 2003 at six Los Angeles area schools, was the first to incorporate junior golf into after-school enrichment programs utilizing educators along with PGA and LPGA Professionals. In 2006, TGA launched its school-based franchise model across the United States

and today has franchises in more than 70 territories across the U.S., Spain, and now Canada. TGA impacts hundreds of thousands of youth annually by activating and engaging youth (ages 3-13) in golf through a year-round, multi-level enrichment program. TGA’s programs are conducted indoors and outdoors on school campuses and at community centers where TGA provides all the golf equipment for participating students. The curriculum is designed to enrich the lives of students through incorporating physical activity, health, nutrition and character building, as well as supplement core academic subjects like math, science, reading and social studies in each lesson. In addition, TGA has developed a Player Pathway model, which transitions students from school-based programs to local partner golf courses through a variety of summer camps, parent-child events, and leagues. The TGA program also serves as a feeder program for golf association junior programs and tournaments.

Sport tourism is a growth area for our community and the Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel will also have a significant economic impact.” Event organizers are pleased with the level of enthusiasm shown so far and want to encourage those that are thinking of volunteering to visit staalopen.ca to officially register. Volunteer Chair Gloria Sherban and Caddie Chair Rick Bevilacqua both say that activity on the web has been encouraging thus far but registering early will help to ensure that individuals seeking specific jobs will get their preferred pick. “We have many positions available including scoring, hosting, transportation and caddying to name a few,” said Sherban. “We are confident we can accommodate specific requests.” Local NHL star and Staal Family Foundation representative, Jordan Staal, also visited City Hall today personally lending his support to the event organizers and encouraging community involvement.

“Thunder Bay is our home and our family couldn’t be happier supporting an event that will bring national and international attention to our community while doing such important charity work,” said Jordan. “Our whole family will be participating in the week-long event. We are really looking forward to it.” The Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel is the sixth tournament on the 2014 PGA TOUR Canada schedule. “The start date is getting close.” said Scott Smith, Executive Director. “The excitement is growing and although there is a lot of work to be done, our Committee is extremely dedicated to making certain everything is done well and on time. I can’t thank them enough.” Jordan Staal. “ We are just starting up our foundation and being able to jump into this right away, it is a little bit surreal but at the same time exciting. We are glad to get our foundation going and now to be the brand

for this tournament is exciting. Everyday we get emails to help us make our foundation better. We have sent out some emails to hockey players to play in the pro ams at this tournament.” “ I should be out practising my game but just excited to see the players. I have gone to the Ryder Cup in the past and watching those guys was amazing. I know these guys are not that far off. Just being able to watch them swing will be pretty neat. The best Staal golfer is not Marc lets just say. Eric and I have had a few good battles.” “We had an up and down NHL season and just didn’t find our consistency with the Hurricanes. Sometimes we dominated other teams and then didn’t play well other games. I still believe in our team and the players we have. There is potential and we are a very young team. I am one of the older guys but still fairly young. We are very happy for Marc to be doing so well this season after coming back from an injury.”

Gloria Sherban, Chair Volunteers, Staal Open “ We are looking for 400 plus volunteers and are about half way there. There are lots of opportunities. You don’t have to be a golf expert. We have all kinds of opportunities on the course, in hospitality and in the registration. They will be all fun, wonderful experiences and we encourage people to come out and volunteer. Go to www.staalopen.ca. “ Some of the opportunities involve scoring, walking around with signs, marshalls, starters and you can’t get any closer to the play than that. We have opportunities on the range issuing golf balls to the players and the volunteer tent as well. They are all described on the web site. There is a wonderful volunteer package for you as well including the shirts we are wearing today, a cap or visor, passes, meals and adidas sling bag as well as the appreciation party for everyone at the end. It is just going to be a great event.”

DFX stands for Deep Face Extreme. Once the golfer stands over this driver they will see the difference. The clubface is now 5 mm deeper than the previous version, which catches the ball at impact slightly longer and combines with the nitrogen inside the clubhead to create reduced spin and more distance. In mygolfspy.com, Most Wanted Driver of 2014 article it rated the Air Force One DFX fifth among all new-for-2014 drivers. The article is located online at http://www.mygolfspy.com/2014-mostwanted-driver-overall-awards/ -- claims the Air Force One DFX did well in all of its test categories. Total driving distance was 222.59 yards; total gained vs. control was +1.72 yards; spin was 2991.89 rpm; launch angle was 10.9 degrees, and ball speed was 138.31 mph. PowerBilt has signed MMA athlete Cub Swanson to promote the DFX driver and all of its latest golf equipment. An avid golfer who grew up mostly in the Palm Springs area, the MMA pro Swanson is part of a new marketing campaign to position PowerBilt with an edgier personality.

Canadian Rockies Golf Destination World Class BY SCOTT A. SUMNER

NW Ontario Golfing News Canada has some of the best golf destinations in the world. One area left for me to experience firsthand was the Banff/ Canmore destination located in the Rockies about a 1-hour drive west of Calgary. My mission was to play 5 courses that are members of the Canadian Rockies Golf group. My journey began with an early morning

wake up call at 4 am and Air Canada flights to Winnipeg with a short touch down and then on to Calgary. Given the 2hour time change I arrived in the Calgary airport at 7:20 am. That’s a pretty good connection in my mind and after a quick trip to Budget Rent a Car I was on my way to Canmore. As you leave Calgary on their excellent highways you will soon begin to see higher elevations. By the time you arrive in the pretty town of Canmore you are amoungst soaring snow-covered peaks of 9000 feet

plus. This is a beautiful part of our world and just the scenery makes the destination a great one. My first stop would be the Stoneridge Resort. This is a beautiful new hotel facility that features condominium style rooms. My 2 bedroom 2 bath unit complete with full kitchen, flat screen TV’s and fireplace in a 20 foot high ceiling great room made me feel right at home. There is a fantastic Safeway store in Canmore that would be my next stop to stock up on some food!

ly from Aurora, Ontario. “ Stewart Creek is a very playable mountain course. You get rewards for good shots and can hit driver quite a lot. We are 7200 yards from the tips with 5 different tees. Our weather can be awesome especially in July and August. We get a fair number of Americans here each year. It is a Mecca for outdoor enthusiasts from fly fishing, to rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking and wildlife viewing.”

Even after this travel I was right on schedule for my first golf game that afternoon at Stewart Creek, a few minutes away. Stewart Creek located in Canmore opened in 2000 and was designed by Gary Browning who has done a fair amount of work in the west and is based out of Calgary. Canmore has about 13,000 residents and with part time people over 15,000. Weekends there can be over 30,000 in Canmore. “ We are at 4000 feet elevation here and are set right into the 3 Sisters Mountains. There are some great views up and down the Bow Valley. We have ranked well over the years with Golf Digest’s 4.5 star course rating,” said Chris Schatzmann, Head Golf professional at Stewart Creek and original“ My favourite aspect of the course is the design which is very simple in that it was formed to land that was here before the golf course. There is also elevation change and undulation. You get a little bit of everything from short par 4’s to long par 5’s and interesting par 3s,” said Schatzmann. “If you want to play a number of courses in the area you can go to www.candianrockiesgolf.com. You are always dealing with a person when you contact us to book tee times by phone,” said Schatzmann. There are 238 members at Stewart Creek and about half of their play is with members. The public can play any day. The membership cost is $50,000 non-equity. Green fees from June 1st are $175 to $195 and specials as low as $129 depending on time. It includes cart and range. Their season is mid May to October with the goal to get over the 20,000 rounds. My first round in this area was fun with weather changing from sun to light rain to snow flurries in rapid succession. The Elk were out enjoying themselves here as well. Stewart Creek is a very pretty course! Continued Next Page

in after that.

The next day it was off to the Canmore Golf and Curling Club also located a few minutes from my hotel. Darren Cooke is the Director of Golf here and from Medicine Hat originally. “ Golfing in Canmore started in 1926 in this location with 9 holes in 1961 and 18 holes in the early 80’s. Les Furber helped with our master plan and lives just down the street. We have mountain views everywhere and the Bow River on the 5th hole. You get to look up from the valley and people can walk the course quite easily,” said Cooke. “ The snow will stay on the peaks surrounding us until July. We are at about 4000 feet and the peaks will go to 8-9000 feet.” The Canmore Golf And Curling Club currently has a wait list for members with over 600 adults, 150 juniors and 45 others life members. The local green fee rate is $73 and $80 if not a resident and the cart is optional. They do 30,000 to 36,000 rounds per year opening the last Friday in April to Thanksgiving with temporary tees

“ I like that the course is playable at all different levels of ability. It doesn’t have long carries or water. It is walk able, not long, but has its challenges. The membership is great. We have members that have second homes here for the summers and are from say Toronto or Texas. There is lots of wildlife that wander through here. Elk live here in the winter and there are geese, deer and coyotes. The Bow River is also great fishing,” said Cooke. “ We work as a group to market our golf and have so much to offer for a 4 or 5 day period with great designers. It is world golf destination with all these courses close by. You can ski and golf the same day for part of the year.”

Right from my hotel room you could almost see my next course, Silvertip, beautifully framed in the window. This course is also just a few minutes away and would be my next game. Silvertip opened in 1998 to a soft opening and fully in 1999. It is a private development spread over 600 acres

and the golf course consumes just over 100 acres along with wildlife corridors, real estate and developments. The course is a Les Furber design and he calls it his signature golf course. The private owner is Guy Turcotte, an oil person by trade, who also owns the nearby Eagle Ranch golf course as well. “ We sit at the clubhouse at just under 5000 feet and the peaks surrounding the course are 8000 feet. There are views

across the valley on almost all 18 holes. It is a golf experience. You have incredible conditioning, the dining experience and great service, “ said Rhett Bokitoch, Golf Sales Manager for Silvertip and a PGA of Canada member. The views are incredible. It is 360 degrees on every hole. We have the Three Sisters scenes from many holes. The condition of the course is incredible for the terrain and weather.” Continued Page 8

Sunice Ultimate V6 Lives Up To Name by Scott A. Sumner Last year the Presidents Cup held at Muirfield Village, Dublin Ohio was exciting! The top players in the world played at a beautiful venue in early October and the US team was victorious. The weather was rainy but didn't dampen the spirits of the thousands of spectators. The International team, which included Canadian Graham Delaet, remained warm and dry in their official Sunice outerwear gear. I really enjoy how its makes me feel non restricted in any way with my golf swing. In my part of Canada the golf courses are just opening and I know the Ultimate V6 will make my experience on the golf course in all weather conditions a great one.

The food and beverage drives a lot of business.” “ My first game here was one of those goose bump moments. It offers challenge for everybody of different abilities. Our tee boxes are from 5000 to 7100 yards. You should play the tees for your ability. Once you find the fairway it is quite easy, but you have to get the ball in play.” said Mann. Steven Young is the Director at Golf at the Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course, originally from Ottawa and then New Brunswick. Steven was a strong junior golfer and worked at the New Brunswick Golf Association before moving on to the Algonquin Hotel and then the Banff opportunity came up. “ Golf was started here on sand greens on an informal basis before the 1900’s but in 1911 organized golf began here with a 9 hole course designed by Scott W Thompson. Stanley Thompson built the 18-hole course. In 1888 the historic Banff Springs Hotel was built to help import the tourists. It looks like a Sleeping Buffalo,” said Young who is in his 7th year at Banff Springs. “ Stanley Thompson courses are what you see is what you get. The greens have subtle challenges with some bunkers that are fair. There are no forced carries. This is a course that has tremendous scenery, is very well manicured and kept up given the conditions we have at the base of a mountain covered in snow for over 7 months of the year. A really good golfer can play from the tips and yet a novice golfer can play from the forward tees and enjoy the course. That is a true mark of a great facility. When you hit a bad shot all you have to do is look up at your surroundings and you will remember

hotel room or the spa. “ People who come here usually like food, drink, hiking and we have all of that. We get people from all over the world. Many have played our course on the golf simulator before even arriving.” smiles Young. In peak time the green fee is $225 at Banff Springs, while in the afternoon it can be $185 or later $155. A good deal is the 9 and dine where you can play the tunnel 9 courses with dinner for $79 or play the Stanley 18 hole course front 9 with dinner for $89. The clubhouse is built like a teepee in recognition of the first nations who used to migrate through the valley and put up their tents.

the great service and accommodation at the Banff Springs hotel it makes for a very special stay. It was great fun for me to play Canadian Rockies golf. A special thanks to all my hosts.
