OUR LOCATIONS NorthTec is the only Northland-based tertiary education institute offering programmes ranging from foundation studies to degrees. We have campuses and learning centres at Whangarei, Kerikeri, Räwene, Kaitaia, Dargaville and Kaikohe. We also have off-campus sites from the Rodney district to the Far North.

Whangarei Raumanga

Future Trades

Our main campus is located at Raumanga Valley Road, Raumanga. This is where the majority of classes are held. As well as classrooms and an interactive lecture theatre, the campus contains a purpose-built kitchen and restaurant; a working hair and beauty salon; science and computer laboratories; a modern art gallery and art studios. The campus also has a marae and whare kai.

Our multimillion-dollar, purpose-built trades training centre is in Dyer St, in the heart of Whangarei’s industrial area. Most of NorthTec’s trades and primary industries programmes are based at this campus, which houses automotive, carpentry and engineering workshops, a health and safety training arena and a large outdoor area which is used for horticultural training.

The Raumanga campus is handily situated, being walking distance from the centre of Whangarei and on a local bus route. In addition, NorthTec provides a pay-as-you-go bus service which transports students from the Far North and mid North to their classes in Whangarei.

ASB Stadium, Kensington NorthTec’s sport and recreation programmes are based at this multi-sports stadium which is Northland’s largest sporting hub.

4

Off-campus sites NorthTec has a number of community-based sites which have been approved for teaching. Locations and programmes vary according to local demand.

Mid North Bay of Islands, Kerikeri

Räwene

Our Kerikeri campus is located just outside the town centre in a beautiful location. It features an on-site nursery for horticulture and sustainable rural development programmes and is also the base for NorthTec’s unique eco-tourism and marine adventure programme.

Located on the beautiful Hokianga harbour, our small, friendly centre in Räwene is a great place to study, where everyone knows your name.

Kaikohe

Kaitaia

Far North

Our new centre at Kaikohe, in the heart of the Mid North, is the venue for a number of programmes aimed at preparing students for the Northland job market.

NorthTec’s northernmost campus contains a customised computer suite and a carpentry workshop. Programmes delivered in Kaitaia reflect the local industries.

Dargaville

Rodney district

Our new Dargaville campus sits at the heart of the Kaipara community and provides a warm welcome for students. With programmes tailored to meet the needs of the local community, the Dargaville centre has a focus on trades and land-based training.

NorthTec delivers a range of programmes in this district to the south of Whangarei. With a focus on primary industries, programmes are taught at a variety of locations.

Level 7

Certificates

Diplomas

Degrees

Certificates at NorthTec are usually between levels 1 and 4, and with at least 40 credits. They can take from 12 weeks to a full year to complete and can provide a pathway into diploma and degree programmes. This includes foundation level programmes. Most trades and service jobs require level 3 or 4 certificates.

Diplomas are usually between levels 5 and 7. They take one to two years of full-time study and can lead to further study at degree level.

Degrees are qualifications at level 7. They usually take three years of full-time study to complete and can lead to further study at master’s degree or doctorate levels. A person who holds a bachelor’s degree may be able to enrol for a post-graduate diploma or master’s degree.

Levels

Credits

Graduate diplomas Graduate diplomas are qualifications at level 7. They are often one year of full-time study; a bachelor’s degree or equivalent is the usual entry requirement.

Each programme is classified by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) with a level from 1 to 10 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF). The higher the level, the more complex and demanding the programme. Credits show the ‘value’ of a programme and denote the length of time required to successfully complete it. One credit represents approximately 10 hours of study. 120 credits represent a one-year, full-time programme of study.

Note: The names and content of some programmes may be subject to change due to the Mandatory Review of Qualifications being undertaken nationally by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. This review applies to all programmes at levels one to six, and is designed to reduce the number of different qualifications available throughout New Zealand by standardising programmes offered by education providers. It also increases both quality assurance and industry involvement in the development of qualifications, ensuring that they are relevant to the workplace.

Entry criteria Each programme has entry criteria which must be met before you can enrol. The criteria may be prior achievement of certain academic qualifications or, for mature students, they can relate to previous work, skills and experience. In general, if you have: No formal qualifications – you can enrol for a foundation or certificate programme (Levels 2 or 3) NCEA Level 1 or equivalent – you can enrol for a certificate programme (Levels 2, 3 and 4) NCEA Level 2 or equivalent – you can enrol for a diploma programme (Levels 5 and 6) NCEA Level 3, University Entrance or equivalent – you can enrol for a bachelor degree programme (Level 7) To find out about entry criteria for individual programmes, please refer to our website, www.northtec.ac.nz

VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS

8

For most careers you will need to undertake further education or training after leaving school. This can consist of a tertiary qualification or on-the-job training. Vocational pathways is a tool that helps you to see how your strengths, interests and achievements relate to future study options and job opportunities.

VOCATIONAL PATHWAY

NORTHTEC STUDY AREAS

The tools help you identify the type of job you would like, and the study programmes you will need to take to get there. Study options are colour coded into six main areas, all aligned with an industry sector: • Primary Industries • Service Industries • Social and Community Services • Manufacturing and Technology • Construction and Infrastructure • Creative Industries If you know what you want to do as a career, the vocational pathway can help you see which subjects you should take, and to which level. If you are unsure about what career you want to go into, the pathways can help you see how your strengths and interests match up with jobs and study options available. “I had worked in commercial printing and advertising before having my children, and I had always done short art courses, but the degree was a real step up to me taking my creativity seriously. The exhibitions plus the stimulation of being with other creative students and tutors, gave me confidence and helped me grow as an artist. Class sizes were small and the course could cater to our needs and be hands-on. “I worked hard in class so I could fully commit to my family out of class time. In my third year practicum, I helped to organise the inaugural Whangarei Sculpture Symposium with the then Arts Promotion Trust (now Creative Northland). This led to my getting an advertised position with them doing arts management and administration for 25 hours a week when I graduated. “As a graduate, I now confidently call myself an artist and I have plenty of work.”

“My Mum was an accountant but this training has introduced me to a broader skill set than I expected. I loved all the accounting content but the managerial papers really helped me develop as a person and improve my communication skills. “I was asked to be student rep for the business sector of NorthTec and I loved the interaction with students from all different courses. I met my networking crew through this and we worked as a team to set up student events like end of year dinners. “Being at a small polytechnic like NorthTec can be such an advantage. The classes are small so you get one-on-one input, plus you can save money by studying from home. “Doing the Applied Management degree opened my eyes to the different specialties within accounting – like tax, auditing, and managerial accounting. I’m keen to become a Chartered Accountant and will probably decide between managerial and financial accountancy.”

“I’m in my early 40s and as a salon owner I’m now fulfilling a dream that I’ve had since I was 16. “I had married, had children, separated, remarried and was refocusing on my future when it occurred to me I could finally pursue my dream. I went and saw one of the tutors and she was so encouraging that I took the leap. “My only challenge as a mature student was whether I could handle the study, but I got amazing support and found a way to learn that really worked for me. The age mix in our class wasn’t an issue because we were all bonded by the same passion. “The whole course was really relevant – the structure, the standard, the presentation and the hands-on content which included searching out your own client base. It prepared me perfectly for running my own salon now. I love it. I’m living my dream and will continue with more training to broaden my skills.”

Laura was in hospital as a patient herself when she realised nursing was what she would love to devote her life to. “During the hospital visits I noticed all the different ways I was treated, so I knew I could help give people a good patient care experience.” “Studying at NorthTec meant I could continue to live at home, and the supportive environment and small class sizes helped reduce my anxiety at a time when I was vulnerable. The mix of online work, hands-on experience and lectures also made the study possible for me. Since graduating, Laura has continued to study while working in three different clinics. “I was keen to work out in the community so I got a practice nurse position at a GP clinic in Kaitaia, then worked as sole nurse at another branch of that clinic in Coopers Beach, and now I am a practice nurse at a medical clinic in Whangarei.

“The training is a mix of on-the-job work, paperwork, and study material to do at home, and it provides me with a lot more technical knowledge and understanding of why we do what we do. It has also introduced me to the importance of having safe habits. We now put safety before everything else. “Training on the job means you get to apply what you’ve learnt straight away. We learn things like how to work out safe working loads and tensions, so it’s directly relevant to what we are doing every day. The tutor is patient and explains things in a way that’s easy to understand. “The training gives me more job security and has increased my self-worth. When I get more experience I would like to have my own machines and do my own thing as a sub-contractor. I’ve learned a lot but I still have a lot to learn – and I’m keen to progress now.”

“I got this job inspecting bridges, tunnels, and culverts for the whole Auckland area as soon as I finished my Diploma in Civil Engineering. My whole life has opened up to possibilities I never knew existed before. “The course opened my eyes to the civil engineering world and its processes. On the study journey I became really interested in legislation and council regulations and that was a surprise to me. I also got interested in the hands-on approach on some subjects and in how we work together, which were invaluable towards my learnings. “The tutors pushed us to excel and made such an effort for us that we made an effort for ourselves. Stretching to do the course has totally changed my life. “I love the variety of work, I’m amazed at the opportunities that exist, and I’m keen to explore them. My biggest motivation is my family. I want to inspire them to open up to opportunity.”
