FASHION DESIGN MA
Fashion Design MA This course is for those who want to take control of their design direction, pursue their passion relentlessly and unleash their creativity upon the world of fashion. This full time Masters in fashion design has been created in consultation with our collaborative partners, specifically designed to supply the industry with graduates who have the skills and knowledge that employer’s want. You will even have the option of taking modules which respond to the fast-evolving world of ethical and environmentally friendly design with our modules in sustainable fashion. As well as producing world-class designers, this programme is the perfect preparation for a wide range of careers within the fashion and wider creative industries. Career paths include roles such as; designers, directors, stylists, buyers, account managers, visual merchandisers, editors, industry commentators, fashion management or trend forecasters. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with organisations from across the fashion and creative industries through your project work, allowing you to build your professional skills, your portfolio, and your network of contacts.

FASHION DESIGN (SUSTAINABLE AND ETHICAL) MA
Fashion Design (Sustainable and Ethical) MA Fashion is the second most polluting industry in the world, second only to oil. The Fashion Design (Sustainable and Ethical) MA will equip you with the knowledge to become an expert in ethics and sustainability, and begin an exciting career in fashion. Positioned within the design community, this course offers a unique and innovative approach in addressing the environmental and social challenges facing the contemporary fashion industry. Utilising a range of design thinking and problem solving techniques, the course will enable you to become a critical thinker, focussing on global, societal issues and creating a more responsible model for the future of fashion. We will give you the tools to be future leaders in the fashion industry, with an in-depth understanding of the economic, environmental and social factors, this course will explore innovative sourcing, production and consumption models appropriate for a sustainable future. FASHION DESIGN (PERFORMANCEWEAR) MA
Fashion Design (Performancewear) MA The Fashion Design (Perfomancewear) MA is an ambitious course, suited to those who are highly motivated to innovate within the fashion industry. The course is suited to those who wish to further their design practice with social, critical, technological and ecological dimensions within a self-directed project or in collaboration with an industry partner. This course will produce the next generation of hybrid designers, who are able to interpret new technologies and make innovative and progressive contributions to design. This will include products for extreme environments, sportswear, wearables, lifestyle and health products. Your specialism in performancewear will be underpinned by research-led contextual modules. These will provide you with a grounding in research methods, creative thinking, cross-cultural communication, contemporary influences on design, reflective practice, innovation and entrepreneurship.

FASHION DESIGN (MENSWEAR) MA
Fashion Design (Menswear) MA Menswear will outperform the women’s clothing sector across the world by 2020, according to research by Euromonitor International. It is also rapidly transforming, in response to consumer demand and opportunities presented by new technologies. This is a fascinating time to be at the forefront of men’s fashion, and this course will set you up to lead the way. The Fashion Design (Menswear) MA is an ambitious course, suited to those who want to pioneer within the fashion industry and gain an exciting career in menswear. This course will produce designers who are able to inspire and develop products with a high level of integrity and commercial value. Fashion Design (Womenswear) MA Womenswear has always led the way in terms of prestige, creativity and opportunity in the fashion world. The Fashion Design (Womenswear) MA is an ambitious course suited to those with the determination to break into the competitive industry of womenswear. The Fashion Design (Womenswear) MA aims to produce designers who can develop products with a high level of integrity and commercial value, as well as an appreciation of social issues like equality and diversity. Fashion at Northumbria - Teaching Across all five courses you will study a series of interconnected modules over three semesters. Your taught sessions will follow a ‘learn, explore further and apply’ structure. The modules have been designed to reflect the realities of the design industry and working environments. You will craft a Personal Development Plan (PDP) to record what you’ve done and plan what you want to achieve, enabling you to recognise your development needs and progress towards your unique goals. You will produce sophisticated fashion products or single fashion items as proof of concept or may work in collaboration with industrial partners.

Fashion at Northumbria- Assessments Assessments for Womenswear, Menswear and Performancewear will be portfolio based for 2 modules Design Proposal and Design Experimentation with a reflective Personal Development Plan. The assessment for modules Design Thinking and Design Process are a single illustrated report of 5000 words or a video including substantial evidence demonstrating the application of methods and knowledge. The final 60 credits for Project Thesis will be the culmination of preceding work and presented as a Design project with accompanying thesis of 6,000 words and PDP, or demonstrated entirely through a thesis of 15,000 words and PDP. For MA Fashion Design (Sustainable and Ethical), Responsible Design and Fashion Product Lifecycle will generate an extensive body of development work which will form the basis of the work required for assessment. This will be recorded using methods appropriate to the individual (process journal, annotated bibliography etc.) demonstrating a continuation of investigation through appropriate secondary resources. The assessment for modules Design Thinking and Design Process are a single illustrated report of 5000 words or a video including substantial evidence demonstrating the application of methods and knowledge. The final 60 credits for Project Thesis will be the culmination of preceding work and presented as a thesis of 15,000 words and Personal Development Plan (plus any additional work subject to the individual’s project).

The Programme Leader and Modules Tutors will all be accessible and ready to help you reach your full potential. Dr Alana James is an expert academic in the field of ethics and sustainability in fashion and will lead the MA Fashion Design (Sustainable and Ethical) programme. She has experience of working with high-street fashion brands within their work on ethical trade and sustainability and integrates this industry focus to the masters programme. She completed her PhD at Northumbria University in 2014 which explored the vital relationship between fashion brands and consumers in creating meaningful responsible change in the fashion industry. She is passionate about embedding sustainability as a design tool in fashion education, enabling students to become future change makers addressing the key global challenges of tomorrow.
Our Staff Emma Jane Goldsmith is an experienced womenswear fashion educator, her expertise is broad from detailed surface embellishment, conceptual pattern cutting, dress design, soft tailoring, through to designer sportswear. Emma has strong links with industry in all levels of the market which will help students gain a rich understanding of the demands of contemporary womenswear. Her industrial formative career was designing for luxury international designer brands in New York and Paris. Additionally, to design, she has experience in garment production, manufacture, PR and consultancy and launched her own accessories line. She has two research streams: as a maker, reinvigorating artisan craft for future fashion and as a practitioner studying the changing interface of Fashion Curation.
Research Rich Learning Much of our research in the School of Design is built on long-term collaborations with citizens and communities, and includes partnerships with a range of non-profit, public and commercial partners. The School has three research themes:  Design + Wellbeing  Design + Business and Publics  Design + Making and Materials These themes are underpinned by strengths in core areas of design expertise across industrial and innovation design, fashion design and fashion communications, graphic design, interior design, and interaction design and human-computer interaction.
Fashion Application Portfolio Portfolio required for the following courses: Fashion Design MA Fashion Design (Performancewear) MA Fashion Design (Menswear) MA Fashion Design (Womenswear) MA We want students who are excited by the subject they choose and are engaged in the world around them. What to include: Show creativity, drawing, observation skills, colour work, use of varied media. Sketchbooks, research, development of ideas. Reference contemporary fashion designers and brands, fashion drawing.
Entry Requirements Applicants should normally have a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in a relevant discipline. Applicants with appropriate work experience and/or a relevant professional qualification will be considered. Fashion Facilities Taught at City Campus East in the centre of Newcastle. When on-campus you will work in studio space where you can take inspiration from postgraduates across all design disciplines. You will have access to premium, industry facilities which will prepare you for work, including a photography studio, machine room, print room and studio space. Responsible design in either practice or commercial processes evidences a growing need to act in a restorative, regenerative manner beyond the ideology of sustainability. You will have access to a specialist design laboratory to experiment with new processes and understandings for future fashion.
