The Travel Grant is a scholarship available to the business and law students of Northumbria. It aims to encourage students to undertake once in a lifetime volunteering projects around the globe by providing them with the funding required to complete the trip. Students can apply for up to ÂŁ1,000 for a trip of 3 weeks and above and up to ÂŁ500 for projects of 2 weeks and under. The funding does not support the university's study aboard exchanges and is specifically aimed at helping students wanting to volunteer abroad.

How to

Apply To apply for the Northumbria Travel Grant you must fill out an application form including: - full details of the proposed project - Trip benefits to the community - Trip benefits to you personally - detailed cost/budget plan - the amount applied for - evidence of your research into the trip The application process generally begins towards the end of semester one and it is around February time in semester two where you will hear if you have been successful or not. Hespi has received ÂŁ1,800 in total throughout her time at Northumbria to fund volunteering projects in both Nepal and Kenya.

Nepal

What did the NTG allow you to do ?

I received ÂŁ1,000 from Northumbria's travel grant in 2014 to teach English to children in Nepal. The program I completed was for four weeks and I taught lessons in a variety of subject areas to children aged between 4-16 years old. I also taught English to college students studying journalism and the alphabet and numbers to nursery children. The whole experience was extremely rewarding as I not only significantly contributed to building up the education of underprivileged children, but I also learnt so much myself! The chance to experience a whole new culture and live like a local for four weeks was amazing, as I was lucky enough to live with a local family and go to a Nepali wedding.

Kenya What did the NTG allow you to do ? The ÂŁ800 from the travel grant allowed me to spend five weeks of the summer in 2016 working on a woman's educational program in Kenya with a HIV charity. The program focused on offering direct support to women suffering from HIV in slums, which had mainly been contracted through sexual labour. Throughout my time at the charity I was offering therapy to those affected by the disease and teaching in two schools set up by the charity. I was also able to teach these women skills I have directly learnt from my business studies at Northumbria by planning and implementing an etsy shop where jewellery can be sold to offer an alternative, safe way to generate income. The best thing about receiving the travel grant funding is the rewarding feeling of being able to help those less fortunate and at the same time I was also able to travel, experience a new culture and go on safari.
