KEEPING YOUR PET SAFE AT CHRISTMAS
Cosy nights, glistening lights and tables filled with lots of
colourful tasty foods. Christmas is the time of the year when most of us let ourselves go and indulge in our favourite foods and drinks. Unfortunately, this is also a time when our furry friends may experience anxiety, along with troubled tummies from our delicious delights.
Being a pet at Christmas can be tough without the support of its owner. This is a busy time of the year for families, with celebrations in full force it’s easy to forget the food and drink flowing may accidentally find its way into our pets mouths.
Below is a list of some of the more toxic foods that have been known to harm our animals this time of the year: J Chocolate J Mince Pies J Christmas Pudding J Onion Gravy J Alcohol J Bones from meats
Cats & Dogs
There are many ways in which you can help your pet get through the festive period without any stress. Cats and dogs like routine, as there may be more people in and out of the home, trying to keep their routine the same can really help.
Try not to change their food, exercise and bedtimes, keeping things consistent will help them to feel more secure.
If you have a busy house, don’t force your cat or dog into a meeting situation because they may not be ready. Let them
figure this out on their own terms. It is also important to create
an area that they can retreat to for some downtime away from the hustle and bustle. If you leave their favourite toys in this area to remind them of positive experiences.
If you are visiting other households with your pet it might be a good idea to take a favourite toy or blanket with a familiar smell to make them feel secure. The toy is a great way to distract and keep them entertained.
Smaller Animals
For smaller animals, for example, hamsters, put them in a place where they won’t be disturbed, especially if a visitor has an animal as this might frighten them. Avoid putting decorations on their cages as they can nibble through them which could result in medical issues.
If you are having a party, remember a lot of animals, in particular smaller animals, are very sensitive to loud noises, so move them to a quiet part of the house.
Outdoor pets may want extra bedding and fresh clean water, this needs to be checked twice a day due to freezing conditions.
Things To Remember
If your pet is prone to getting sick during these busy periods or on medication, it would be worthwhile stocking up on medication ahead of the holidays so you don’t run short and are unable to get what you might need.
Having your local vets numbers on hand, or the number of a vet in the place you are visiting, would be a great idea and reduce any stress should you run into any issues. Planning for your pet is incredibly important and can reduce the risks of them suffering from stress and you panicking as a pet parent.
