GOING ON HOLIDAY WITHOUT YOUR PET?

With summer well and truly here, it’s a time when most of us like to get away. Unfortunately, that can sometimes mean we can’t take our pets with us. As pet lovers, we want to ensure they are enjoying their time without us in a safe and secure environment.

Where will my pet stay when I’m on holiday?

This is the question that every pet parent asks when planning a holiday. There are many options available for our fourlegged family members when going abroad or to places where our pets can’t go.

Friends or family

This is the most convenient if available, especially if your dog or cat has built up a relationship and trust with them.

Pet sitter

Pet sitter’s are a great option for those that perhaps don’t have family or friends available to take care of them. Pet sitters are often available to stay in your home with your pet which is great because that is one less stress your dog or cat has to deal with. Check out the pet sitting service at Rover.com where you can search for pet sitters in your local area.

Dog kennel or cattery

If none of the above options are available to you then why not try a dog kennel or a cattery? There are some great places in North Wales that tend to your pet’s needs and ensure they have a wonderful stay. Which can include a large area to play in and possibly meet other friendly guests, their own room, as well as being fed their daily meals.

Before booking their holiday

Before booking or giving the seal of approval on either pet sitters, kennels or catteries there are some things you should take into consideration: J Check your dog’s or cat’s ID and microchip are up to date J Do your research, and check online reviews J Do they have an up-to-date license? J Take your dog to meet whoever will be looking after them and also to see what kind of place they will be staying in, is there sufficient space for exercise and play, is it clean?

J Do they have animal insurance? J Are they asking you the right type of questions in relation to your pet such as questions about their diet and vaccinations?

What should I pack for their holiday?

Whether you intend to send your dog or cat to a sitter, kennel or keep them at home, packing a pet travel bag is a great idea. Pack some of their favourite things such as a favourite toy, a blanket with your scent as well as games that will help keep them distracted and their brains occupied while you are away.
