DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS BRIAN OAKES Brian Oakes enters his third season as the Director of Athletics for Northwest Mississippi Community College. During his first season as athletic director, Oakes took on the task of replacing retiring and all-time winningest coaches Don Edwards (women’s basketball) and Mike Rowan (softball), appointing Troy Howell and Chelsea Bramlett, respectively, to the vacant positions. In his first season, Howell led Northwest to a 17-10 overall record and a runner-up finish in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament, falling one win shy of the Lady Rangers’ first NJCAA National Tournament bid since the 2005-06 campaign. Bramlett’s debut was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic but the former Mississippi State and Team USA competitor still fielded an 8-6 overall record, which included a conference sweep against Pearl River and a four-game winning streak to end the season. (Both teams would later make deep postseason runs during the 2021 seasons, with Bramlett’s softball squad finishing two wins shy of the program’s first NJCAA Division II World Series appearance.)
Northwest Director of Athletics BRIAN OAKES, pictured with his wife Bridgett. Oakes was introduced as the college’s Director of Athletics on July 1, 2019.
Oakes also brought in former Lewisburg and Southaven coach Allison Burchyett to lead the women’s volleyball program, which took the court for its inaugural season in January 2021. During her first season, Burchyett posted a 6-12 overall record and led her team to the Region 23 qualifier match against Itawamba, falling one victory short of making an appearance in the NJCAA playoffs.
school’s first national championship in 2000. Oakes, who received his bachelor’s degree in coaching and sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1998, spent five seasons at Warren Central High School, his alma mater, before going to Stone High School.
Another one of Oakes’ head coaching hires arrived in December 2020, when James Beattie took over the reins of the Northwest women’s soccer program. In his first season, Beattie guided the Lady Rangers to a 6-6 overall record and the first round of the MACCC/Region 23 playoffs, the first postseason appearance for any Northwest soccer program since 2017.
Oakes received a master’s degree in health and a specialist’s degree in educational leadership from Mississippi College in 2006.
Additionally, Oakes has also been responsible for hiring assistant coaches Dustin Young (softball), Carla Bartee (women’s basketball), Paige Anders and Charles Jones (football).
Oakes is a native of Vicksburg and is married to the former Bridgett Dendy. The couple have two sons, Ranson (19) and Briley (17).
Oakes arrived at Northwest from Hinds Community College, where he spent eight seasons as the Eagles’ offensive line coach. He replaced Dr. Matthew Domas, who served as interim athletic director during the 2018-19 academic year following the departure of Don “Bubba” Skelton. In his eight seasons at Hinds, Oakes coached over 30 offensive linemen who have gone on to play at the four-year programs, with 22 of those signing to play at the Division I level. He has helped develop the likes of Justin Sandifer, who was selected to All-MACJC and All-Region 23 first teams in 2014 and D’Tavieus Taylor, who was an NJCAA All-American in 2015. Some of his most notable former players include NFL veterans Norman Price and DeVondre Seymour. Prior to his coaching stint at Hinds, Oakes served as head football coach and athletic director at Stone High School in Wiggins from 2006-2010, where he guided the Tomcats to the playoffs in 2008-09 after back-to-back winning seasons. He had numerous players participate in the Bernard Blackwell All-Star Game, including Parade All-American and 2010 Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen selection Darian Arrington. A former student-athlete with Hinds, Northwestern State and Southern Arkansas, Oakes began his coaching career in 1998 as an assistant coach at Hattiesburg High School, where he helped lead the Tigers to the state finals. He then moved on to Belhaven College for a year before becoming a graduate assistant at Delta State University, where he was a part of the

MEN’S BASKETBALL COACHES AND ROSTER
HEAD COACH SHANE OAKLEY
Shane Oakley enters his 16th season at Northwest and his fourth as head coach of the men’s basketball program in 2021-22.
Prior to his one year stint at Jones in 2011-12, Oakley was the women’s and men’s basketball assistant from 2004-11 at Northwest where he enjoyed success with both programs. The men posted a 95-75 mark and the women were 115-75 during his previous seven seasons in Senatobia.
Through three years at the helm of the men’s basketball program, Oakley has compiled a 36-28 overall record and a 19-19 MACCC North Division mark, a total that includes his stint as the team’s interim head coach in the 2018-19 season.
Oakley helped the men’s team to a state championship during the 2004-05 season and back-toback Region 23 Championships and NJCAA Tournament appearances from 2004-06 with Skelton, and on the women’s side, captured another region title and NJCAA Tournament appearance in 2004-05 alongside Don Edwards.
Although his third season may have been the most challenging yet, Oakley still managed to guide his team to an 8-8 overall mark during the 2020-21 campaign, yielding the Rangers’ second straight postseason appearance. Northwest earned a gritty, hard-fought victory at Jones College in the second round of the Region 23 Tournament, before falling to top-seeded Pearl River in the quarterfinal round.
Prior to Northwest, Oakley spent one season as the men’s and women’s assistant at Mississippi Delta. His first coaching job came as a graduate assistant at Delta State during the 2002-03 season.
Oakley compiled a 16-10 overall record and a 7-5 mark in the MACJC North Division during the 2019-20 campaign, guiding the Rangers to the semifinals of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament. Transfer guard Jakobi Pearson garnered first team All-MACJC honors and forward R.J. Duhart signed with Appalachian State, becoming the seventh Division I signee in the last five seasons.
A Senatobia native, Oakley received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in health and physical education from Delta State. He is the twin brother of longtime Ranger football assistant coach, Scott Oakley, and also has an older brother, Brian.
As the Rangers’ interim coach during the 2018-19 season, Oakley led the Rangers to a 12-10 overall record and a 5-7 mark in the north division with a short-handed roster.
Oakley is married to the former Alison Smith of Sardis and the couple will celebrate their threeyear anniversary on December 15, 2021.
This is Oakley’s second stint at Northwest, briefly stepping away in 2011-12 to coach at Jones County JC for a season. Oakley worked with both the men’s and women’s programs during the 2004-11 seasons and spent the last six as the men’s assistant. Northwest had a breakout 2017-18 season, going 22-4 overall and 11-1 in division play. The Rangers won the MACJC north division and hosted the conference tournament, finished as conference runner-up and closed the year with a No. 12 NJCAA national ranking. The eight-year tandem of Oakley and former head coach Bubba Skelton (2004-06, 2012-18) provided a combined 155-59 overall record and 71-25 north division record, including an MACJC championship, two region championships and two trips to the NJCAA national tournament. In his 13 seasons, Oakley has coached 20 all-conference selections, including 13 first team selections and seven second teamers, and four NJCAA All-Americans. Troy University signee Jitaurious Gordon became the Rangers’ first two-time all-conference nod in two decades last season.

ASSISTANT COACH NICK WILLIAMS NICK WILLIAMS ASSISTANT COACH Former Alabama High School Player of the Year and Ole Miss Rebel Nick Williams enters his third season as an assistant on Shane Oakley’s men’s basketball coaching staff. Despite navigating numerous challenges, including COVID-19 protocols and a shortened 2020-21 regular season, Williams helped the Rangers to an 8-8 overall record and an impressive playoff victory at Jones College in the second round of the Region 23 Tournament. Northwest would eventually fall to top-seeded Pearl River in the next round. Along with Oakley, Williams had an instrumental role in preparing forwards Carlos Curry and DeAntoni Gordon for the four-year level, as both players signed with Division I programs Georgia Southern and Little Rock, respectively. Gordon was also selected as the lone All-MACCC honoree from the Rangers. Williams’ first season saw Northwest post a 16-10 overall record in 2019-20, advancing to the semifinals of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament. Alongside Oakley, Williams coached first team All-MACJC guard Jakobi Pearson and Appalachian State signee R.J. Duhart. Prior to Northwest, Williams spent the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons as a graduate assistant at Ole Miss under head coaches Andy Kennedy and Kermit Davis. Prior to that, he played two years professionally overseas in Brazil and Canada and coached high school basketball in his hometown of Mobile, Ala., at Mattie T. Blount and LeFlore High School. A former standout 6-foot-4, 210 pound shooting guard, Williams played his college ball at Indiana (2008-09) before closing out his final three seasons at Ole Miss (201013). Williams averaged 8.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and led Indiana in free throw percentage in 29 starts as a freshman. He’d go on to help the Rebels to 70 combined wins, three straight postseason berths and, as a senior, he was instrumental in helping Ole Miss reach the NCAA Tournament, claim an SEC Tournament title and win the most games in a single season in school history. Williams is a graduate of LeFlore Prep Academy, where he was named the 2008 Alabama High School Player of the Year and was rated the No. 30 shooting guard in the nation by ESPN.com. He led LeFlore to a state championship, three state finals and a combined 126-8 record. A member of the Alabama Challenge AAU team, Williams participated in the LeBron James Skills Academy and was invited to the NBA Top-100 Camp as a prep standout.

2021-22 PREVIEW
SEASON OUTLOOK
JAMES RICHARDS III
KAVONTE TUNSTALL
JAYLON SANDERS
Although November 1 marks a new chapter for the Northwest men’s basketball program, the same goals remain for head coach Shane Oakley.
though this is a rare circumstance, we have the opportunity to have three guys back for a third year. They’ve matured and worked on their game and they understand the day-to-day grind of playing JUCO basketball. Those are things that they can relay to our newcomers, so when you get into competition, these things don’t have to be new to them. Bringing them back doesn’t do anything but help you as a team.”
Now entering his fourth overall season as the Rangers’ head coach (including his 2018-19 interim stint), Oakley has guided the Rangers to the postseason in two of his three seasons so far. Last year, Northwest battled to an 8-8 overall record and the quarterfinals of the expanded Region 23 Tournament, earning a road victory at Jones College.
Richards and Tunstall have been mainstays in the starting rotation since arriving at Northwest in 2019. Standing at 6-2 and 170 pounds, Richards averaged 8.2 points per game in 16 games last season, earning three games in double figures. Tunstall, a native of Byhalia, averaged 5.4 points per game as a guard/forward combo.
“Our goal is to always set ourselves up to make the playoffs,” Oakley said. “You always want to win the whole thing, but everything is a little different now with the conference alignment. So instead of winning the North Division or winning it all, you have to get into the top eight or whatever it is now. Winning the league is a lofty goal and sometimes you fall short, but we’re always going to play up-tempo and do what we need to do to go as far as we can.”
Additionally, Sanders brings back a wealth of experience after finishing as the Rangers’ thirdleading scorer last season. In 16 games, the 6-5, 175-pound guard averaged 9.6 points per games and reached double figures six times, including a season-high 17 points in a double overtime loss to Holmes on March 4. Bell and Hannah also earned valuable minutes last season, with Hannah fighting through a now-healed hip injury.
Speaking of the new conference alignment, the MACCC no longer consists of North and South divisions for men’s or women’s basketball. Each team across the state will play every conference team once in the regular season, aside from some non-conference games occurring early in the season against traditional division rivals.
Adding to the excitement of this year’s squad is a pair of highly-touted freshmen, Isaiah Gaines and Ethan Pickett. Gaines, a 6-7, 225-pound forward from Pensacola, Fla., turned heads in this summer’s JUCOReport.com showcase, as did Pickett, a 6-4 guard from Canton, Ga.
Although Oakley admits that the conference schedule will become a little more challenging, the Rangers have no intentions of backing down from the challenge.
“The first thing people will notice is that they’re great players,” Oakley said, on the out-of-state duo. “Isaiah can really handle it, shoot it and guard all five positions. Ethan is an athletic guy that can play anywhere and get things done where needed. They’re both really tough and athletic, but the best part of them is that they’re also great people and great teammates. They’re humble and we’re hoping that transitions to the rest of our team as well.”
“I have mixed emotions about it,” Oakley said. “I hate that we’re not playing our traditional division opponents twice, at least not in true conference competition. If you look at our schedule, there’s not any warm-up games anywhere. We open with Coahoma in a non-division game right out of the gate, then we go to East Mississippi, and there’s no guarantee that you go 2-0 to start. It’s going to be tough, but we have what we have and we’re going to be ready each and every night.”
Adding to the mix is Olive Branch native and Pearl River transfer Joseph Cooper, and Kansas City, Mo. native London Taylor.
Although the Rangers lost leading scorer DeAntoni Gordon and a big forward in Carlos Curry to the Division I ranks, Northwest does bring back a handful of third-year sophomores for some rare veteran experience. With COVID-19 giving many the option to play an extra year, the Rangers will have everyday starters James Richards III and Kavonte Tunstall back in the lineup, along with Quen Kyles, who redshirted his freshman season in 2019-20.
“(Cooper) comes from a good Pearl River program and has picked up some great experience,” Oakley said. “London is an athletic guy that we found late, and he’s sneaky athletic. He shoots the ball really well and I think we really got a great find in both of those guys.”
Adding to the mix of returning players are Jaylon Sanders, Cori Bell and T.J. Hannah, and all five provide their own qualities for Oakley’s club.
Guards Zandon Haralson (Center Hill), Braxton Taylor (Senatobia), Ra’Mond Tuggles (Byhalia) and forward Kareem Thompson (Horn Lake) round out the newcomers on this year’s roster, all of whom are expected to make valuable contributions.
“It’s all about maturity more than anything else,” Oakley said, regarding his five returners. “At this level, right around the time you get your players where you want them, they’re gone. Even
Northwest will open the season on Monday, November 1 at Coahoma at 6 P.M.

*Northeast Holiday Tournament (Booneville, Miss.)
Though much of the basketball history at Northwest remains scattered at best prior to 1965, there’s no doubt that Henry B. Koon’s seven-year tenure as the Rangers’ head coach remains one of the best in program history. Here, Koon is seen celebrating his 100th career coaching victory with members of the Rangers’ basketball team.

Robbins’ 1984-85 squad ended the regular season on a seven-game winning streak, earning the MACJC championship. Pictured here are Robbins (center) with assistant coaches Don Edwards (left) and Gaylon Baird (right).
The 1986-87 Northwest squad fell short of a conference title, but the Rangers did collect the North Division title in what would be the last championship under Robbins’ tenure.

YEAR-BY-YEAR HISTORY DON “BUBBA”
SKELTON
14 seasons | 1998-2006, 2012-18 295-106 overall (127-41 MACJC) 1998-99 21-8 / 11-1 North Division Champions Marc Dukes took over the head coaching reins in 1993 and it didn’t take long for him to turn the Northwest men’s basketball program into a national powerhouse. Dukes spent five seasons leading the Rangers and left with only 11 conference losses during that span.
Dukes’ third season saw the 1995-96 Rangers win 30 games, claiming the North Division, MACJC and Region XXIII championships en route to a final finish of No. 6 in the nation. The team’s 30 wins were also the most since the 1979-80 season (33).
Dukes’ final season at Northwest ended with a pair of losses in the NJCAA Tournament, but not before the Rangers claimed another pair of North Division and MACJC titles, while earning 29 victories.

Filling the shoes left behind by Marc Dukes was no easy task, but Don “Bubba” Skelton made it seem that way. During his first stint as the Rangers’ head coach, he led Northwest to five NJCAA Tournament appearances, including four straight.

BRIAN OAKLEY
SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR
SPORTS INFORMATION ASSISTANT
Brian Lentz enters his seventh year at Northwest and the third year serving in the primary sports information director role, overseeing the public relations efforts for all 10 sports.
Brian Oakley enters his third year at Northwest as the sports information specialist, assisting with coverage of all 10 Ranger sports.
A lifelong Tate County resident, Lentz was appointed to his current role in November 2018, following a stint as the assistant sports information director that began in July 2015. He has contributed to several college athletic publications since 2015, earning awards from CoSIDA and CPRAM organizations.
Oakley formally joined the Northwest staff in August 2019 but has had a hand in various gameday duties well before then. Since 2015, Oakley has assisted in gameday production, primarily operating the videoboard at Bobby Franklin Field and handling public address announcing at Northwest men’s and women’s basketball games.
Lentz joined Northwest in July 2015 after spending two and a half years as an undergraduate student assistant at Mississippi State. He served as the women’s tennis contact for two seasons and also assisted at home football and baseball games in various roles.
Prior to joining Northwest, Oakley has held other jobs with customer service, journalism, teaching and military experience. In addition to his part-time duties at NWCC, Oakley also serves as the distance learning coordinator at Senatobia High School.
Prior to MSU, Lentz spent two and a half years in the sports information department at Northwest as a student worker, assisting with 12 sports in some capacity and serving as the public address announcer for selected Ranger baseball and softball games. In addition to his work at NWCC, Lentz was the sports editor for The Ranger Rocket for one year and a high school sportswriter for the Tate Record (formerly The Democrat).
Oakley received his Bachelor of Arts from Vanderbilt University in 1998, with focuses on political science and communication studies. While at Vanderbilt, he served as a cadet in the ROTC program and as a marketing and promotions intern in the Commodores’ athletic department, where he was responsible for gameday promotional operations, scheduling of student-athletes for campus tours, off-campus promotion of athletic contests, design of various promotional materials and retail sales of university-related apparel.
In addition to his current duties at Northwest, Lentz has also resumed work as the prep sportswriter for the Tate Record, providing coverage of all five high schools and academies located within Tate County. He also serves as the vice president of the 2YSIDA organization (Two-Year Sports Information Directors of America).
At Vanderbilt, Oakley was selected to revamp a struggling KidsZone program and helped increase kids club membership from 10-15 to over 250 per home football game. Oakley is a native of Senatobia and is the older brother of Ranger assistant football coach Scott Oakley and head men’s basketball coach Shane Oakley.
Outside of his work at Northwest, Lentz has done freelance work behind the scenes for several ESPN and SEC Network events. Lentz has volunteered at numerous preseason and postseason Southeastern Conference (SEC) events and also covered high school sports for both the Starkville Daily News and The Commercial Dispatch while in Starkville. Within the last four years, he has worked several NCAA events, including the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, the South Regional (Sweet 16/Elite Eight) of the 2017 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament and select events for the University of Memphis and Rust College. Lentz is a native of Arkabutla and holds an Associate of Arts from Northwest (2012) and a B.S. in education from Mississippi State (2015), with a focus on kinesiology and sports studies.

ATHLETIC SECRETARY/INSURANCE COORDINATOR
Liesl Mote enters her second year as the athletic academic advisor for Northwest.
Allison Eoff begins her 12th year as the athletic secretary and insurance coordinator for the Northwest athletic department.
Mote is a familiar face around Northwest and previously served as the college’s cheer coach from 2010-19. In her first year in that role, Mote helped bring back male cheerleaders to the program after a 10-year absence, while growing the squad’s size to one of the largest cheer programs among the Mississippi JUCO ranks.
Eoff, a native of Batesville, came to Northwest in 2004 and spent four years in the Registrar’s office before moving over to Howard Coliseum in 2008. Eoff has one son, Hayden (23), and resides in Senatobia.
In her most recent work as athletic academic advisor, Mote helped Northwest student-athletes navigate through the 2020-21 academic year, which was marred by the effects of COVID-19. Under her leadership, Northwest set a new school record of 92 Academic All-MACCC selections and saw 52 other studentathletes also earn NJCAA All-Academic honors.
ERIC VANDERBURG INTRAMURAL COORDINATOR
Additionally, several Northwest teams finished with 3.0 GPAs or better, with women’s basketball and football earning MACCC Academic Team of the Year accolades. For the Lady Rangers, it was the third year in a row winning the honor, after posting a 3.41 GPA for 2020-21, while the Ranger football program’s 3.12 GPA was the only one above a 3.0 among other football-playing schools in the conference.
Vanderburg enters his third year as the Intramural Coordinator at Northwest, joining the college in August 2018.
Prior to her arrival at Northwest in August 2010, Mote spent 13 years in the Armed Forces as a SERE instructor and a federal agent. She was deployed three times as the team leader for the US Air Force anti-terrorism team, twice spending time in Iraq where she earned a bronze star and once in Pakistan.
Vanderburg arrived at Northwest from Middle Tennessee, where he spent nine years as the sports coordinator at Columbia Parks & Recreation. Prior to that, he spent one year at Lewisburg (TN) Parks & Recreation and worked with D1 Sports Training & Therapy in Nashville and the Triple-AAA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves in Richmond, Va.
Mote attended Northwest for two years and finished her bachelor’s in outdoor recreation at Eastern Washington University in 1995. She has been married to her husband, Greg, for eight years.
The East Tennessee native received his degree in sport management from Union University, where he also was a pitcher on the baseball team. He started his career at Columbia State Community College. Vanderburg is no stranger to north Mississippi, with family in the Crenshaw/ Longtown area where he resides now on his family farm.
