DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS BRIAN OAKES Brian Oakes enters his third season as the Director of Athletics for Northwest Mississippi Community College. During his first season as athletic director, Oakes took on the task of replacing retiring and all-time winningest coaches Don Edwards (women’s basketball) and Mike Rowan (softball), appointing Troy Howell and Chelsea Bramlett, respectively, to the vacant positions. In his first season, Howell led Northwest to a 17-10 overall record and a runner-up finish in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament, falling one win shy of the Lady Rangers’ first NJCAA National Tournament bid since the 2005-06 campaign. Bramlett’s debut was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic but the former Mississippi State and Team USA competitor still fielded an 8-6 overall record, which included a conference sweep against Pearl River and a four-game winning streak to end the season. (Both teams would later make deep postseason runs during the 2021 seasons, with Bramlett’s softball squad finishing two wins shy of the program’s first NJCAA Division II World Series appearance.)
Northwest Director of Athletics BRIAN OAKES, pictured with his wife Bridgett. Oakes was introduced as the college’s Director of Athletics on July 1, 2019.
Oakes also brought in former Lewisburg and Southaven coach Allison Burchyett to lead the women’s volleyball program, which took the court for its inaugural season in January 2021. During her first season, Burchyett posted a 6-12 overall record and led her team to the Region 23 qualifier match against Itawamba, falling one victory short of making an appearance in the NJCAA playoffs.
school’s first national championship in 2000. Oakes, who received his bachelor’s degree in coaching and sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1998, spent five seasons at Warren Central High School, his alma mater, before going to Stone High School.
Another one of Oakes’ head coaching hires arrived in December 2020, when James Beattie took over the reins of the Northwest women’s soccer program. In his first season, Beattie guided the Lady Rangers to a 6-6 overall record and the first round of the MACCC/Region 23 playoffs, the first postseason appearance for any Northwest soccer program since 2017.
Oakes received a master’s degree in health and a specialist’s degree in educational leadership from Mississippi College in 2006.
Additionally, Oakes has also been responsible for hiring assistant coaches Dustin Young (softball), Carla Bartee (women’s basketball), Paige Anders and Charles Jones (football).
Oakes is a native of Vicksburg and is married to the former Bridgett Dendy. The couple have two sons, Ranson (19) and Briley (17).
Oakes arrived at Northwest from Hinds Community College, where he spent eight seasons as the Eagles’ offensive line coach. He replaced Dr. Matthew Domas, who served as interim athletic director during the 2018-19 academic year following the departure of Don “Bubba” Skelton. In his eight seasons at Hinds, Oakes coached over 30 offensive linemen who have gone on to play at the four-year programs, with 22 of those signing to play at the Division I level. He has helped develop the likes of Justin Sandifer, who was selected to All-MACJC and All-Region 23 first teams in 2014 and D’Tavieus Taylor, who was an NJCAA All-American in 2015. Some of his most notable former players include NFL veterans Norman Price and DeVondre Seymour. Prior to his coaching stint at Hinds, Oakes served as head football coach and athletic director at Stone High School in Wiggins from 2006-2010, where he guided the Tomcats to the playoffs in 2008-09 after back-to-back winning seasons. He had numerous players participate in the Bernard Blackwell All-Star Game, including Parade All-American and 2010 Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen selection Darian Arrington. A former student-athlete with Hinds, Northwestern State and Southern Arkansas, Oakes began his coaching career in 1998 as an assistant coach at Hattiesburg High School, where he helped lead the Tigers to the state finals. He then moved on to Belhaven College for a year before becoming a graduate assistant at Delta State University, where he was a part of the

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACHES AND ROSTER
HEAD COACH TROY HOWELL
Troy Howell enters his third season as the head coach of the Northwest women’s basketball program in 2021-22.
Before being named head coach, Howell spent eight seasons as an assistant under all-time winningest coach and Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Famer Don Edwards. Edwards spent 32 seasons commanding the Lady Rangers, amassing a career record of 468-335 and a winning percentage of .583.
In two seasons, the Ingomar native has totaled a career record of 22-21 (.512) and a division record of 11-15 (.423), which includes back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time since the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. Despite many challenges brought on during the COVID-19 pandemic (including several schedule alterations), Howell led the Lady Rangers to five wins and the second round of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament. It marked Northwest’s second consecutive postseason appearance since Howell’s appointment as head coach following the 2018-19 season. In his first season as head coach, Howell guided the Lady Rangers to their best season since 2014-15, finishing 17-10 overall with a runner-up finish in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament. Despite a third place finish in the MACJC North Division, Howell’s team marched through the postseason with two upsets against regular season division champion East Mississippi and south division foe Mississippi Gulf Coast. Only nationally-ranked Jones College stopped the Lady Rangers in the Region 23 championship game, keeping Northwest one win away from its first NJCAA National Tournament bid since 2005-06.
Prior to Northwest, Howell spent five seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Rust College, an NCAA Division III member (non-scholarship) that competes in the Independent Southeast Region. He also served as the head track and baseball coach during his tenure. Prior to Rust, Howell was a teacher and coach at Wooddale High School for one season and also spent a year at White Station as the head coach of the varsity girls team and as an assistant coach on the track team. His first collegiate coaching job was an assistant on the Southern Mississippi women’s basketball staff during the 2003-04 season. A familiar face around Senatobia, Howell was a physical education teacher and coach at Senatobia High School from 1993-2002. He led the Warrior boys basketball team to a division and district championship in 2002, boys tennis team to a state title in 1999 and softball team to a state title in 1995. A 2001 graduate of Northwest, Howell received his bachelor’s from the University of Memphis in 2003, where he also served as a manager on the women’s basketball team.
Howell coached both programs in 2011-12, in his first season, in which the programs combined for a 20-26 record. With the women’s program, Northwest has posted a 103-70 overall record, including 57-39 mark in the north division, and advanced to the postseason five times.
In addition to basketball, Howell also coached the Northwest men’s and women’s tennis team from 2013-17 before the programs were discontinued at the end of the 2017 season.
The Lady Rangers finished as north division runner-up in 2014-15 and 2015-16 and won the title during the 2012-13 season. Northwest won 16 games in 2015-16, finished as division runner-up, was nationally-ranked and advanced to both the MACJC and NJCAA Region 23 Tournaments. A total of 23 players have continued their careers at the four-year level under Howell’s watch, including Kayla Freeman and Tamarah Sykes (Mississippi College), Kayla Bradley (ArkansasMonticello), Destiny Gardner (North Alabama), Kelsey Brown (Belhaven University), Aspriona Gilbert and Jacquelyn Brooks (Delta State) and Sara Lytle (Union University) from the past seven seasons. Not only have the Lady Rangers performed on the court, but they have done it off the court as well. Northwest posted a school-best 3.69 team GPA during the 2018-19 season to be recognized as an All-Academic team by the MACJC, NJCAA and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

ASSISTANT COACH CARLA BARTEE CARLA BARTEE ASSISTANT COACH Carla Bartee enters her third season as assistant women’s basketball coach in 2021-22. In just one season as a member of the Northwest Lady Rangers’ coaching staff, Bartee and head coach Troy Howell led Northwest to its best season since 2014-15, posting a 17-10 overall record. The Lady Rangers finished third in the MACJC North Division but made a deep postseason run into the championship game of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament, where Northwest fell just one win shy of qualifying for its first NJCAA National Tournament berth since 2006. Additionally, two members of the 2019-20 Lady Ranger squad signed to the four-year level, both with Mississippi College (Kayla Freeman; Tamarah Sykes). A native of Waynesboro, Bartee spent her prep career at Wayne County High School where she averaged 24.4 points, 12.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks during her senior season (2002-03), leading Wayne County to a 26-5 overall mark and a runner-up finish in Class 5A. Prior to her stellar senior campaign, Bartee also averaged 16.3 points and 11.6 rebounds as a junior and earned several notable accolades, including Second Team All-State recognition and honorable mention All-South honors by the Orlando Sentinel and All-America honors from Street & Smith’s. Bartee signed with Western Kentucky and spent the 2003-04 season with the Lady Toppers, playing in all 34 games, starting 27 and averaging 11.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. She scored a career-high 21 points on two occasions and posted a career-high 17 boards against Arkansas-Little Rock and notched nine double-doubles on the season, including a 21-point, 12-rebound effort against her future Ole Miss teammates. Bartee earned All-Tournament Team honors at the 2004 Sun Belt Conference Championship and helped lead the Lady Toppers to the title game by tallying 15 points and seven rebounds in the tournament. She finished the 2003-04 season ranked 20th in the Sun Belt Conference in scoring and fourth in rebounding, while helping guide WKU to a 20-14 overall record and a 10-4 mark in conference play. The Lady Toppers advanced to postseason play, falling in the third round of the Women’s NIT to UNLV, 78-75. After transferring to Ole Miss following her freshman season, Bartee returned to the court during the 2005-06 season and played three more seasons with the Lady Rebels under coaches Carol Ross and Renee Ladner. While at Ole Miss, Bartee competed alongside legends such as Armintie Price and Shawn Goff, helping guide the Lady Rebels to a combined 54-41 record, a WNIT appearance and to the Elite Eight of the 2007 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. During her senior season in 2007-08, Bartee led the team in rebounding with 233 total boards and an average of eight rebounds per game. She also led the team in threepoint field goal percentage as a sophomore, hitting nearly 33 percent of her shots from outside the arc (51-for-156). After her Ole Miss career, Bartee spent 10 years playing overseas, beginning with a stint in Sweden from 2008-09. Bartee then took a year off before resuming her international career in Germany from 2010-11, eventually moving on to Romania, where she has resided from 2011-19.

2021-22 PREVIEW
SEASON OUTLOOK
TIERRA TROTTER
KOLTEN BLAKENEY
I’YANA RAGIN
Last year, they were part of a large, freshman-heavy Northwest squad consisting of just one sophomore. Now, this year’s “Sophomore Six” have become the team leaders, as the Lady Rangers look to make it back to the postseason for the third year in a row.
Other notable freshmen include Walnut’s Claire Leak, Hartfield Academy alumnus Cailey Walker, former New Site guard Hannah Campbell and guard McKinna Smith, who played for legendary Mississippi high school coach Jan Sojourner at Jackson Academy.
The core group, consisting of leading rebounder Kolten Blakeney, top two scorers I’Yana Ragin and Tierra Trotter, key reserves Sha’Kirria Everett and Ashton Stanley, are expected to start in the Lady Rangers’ season-opener against Northeast. Joining the aforementioned five is transfer Cayden Boyd, arriving to Northwest after a season at Virginia Wesleyan University.
Northwest will open the season on Monday, November 1 against Northeast at Howard Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 P.M. with live broadcast coverage available on Ranger TV (nwccrangers.com/watch) and Facebook Live.
Ragin and Trotter will certainly be relied upon to pick up where they left off, when the duo combined to lead Northwest in scoring last season. Hailing from Baldwyn, Ragin averaged 10.6 points per game and totaled eight games in double figures, including a season-high 20-point, 11-assist effort against Mississippi Delta. Trotter, a native of Bryant, Ark., led the team with 14.5 points per game, 25 steals and 70 rebounds, good for third on the team in that category. Everett and Stanley also combined for valuable minutes off the bench last season, averaging between 10-18 minutes per game. As for Boyd, the Chesapeake, Va. native saw limited action in six games at Division III Virginia Wesleyan, averaging 3.8 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. Joining the core group of sophomores are nine new faces, led by Wayne County High School standout forward Jamia Chambers and Tishomingo County guard Maura Nunley. Chambers, a native of Waynesboro, helped Wayne County to the third round of the Class 5A playoffs last season and earned all-state Honorable Mention recognition, while Nunley earned numerous preseason and postseason honors, highlighted by scoring 1,000 career points at TCHS.

BRIAN OAKLEY
SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR
SPORTS INFORMATION ASSISTANT
Brian Lentz enters his seventh year at Northwest and the third year serving in the primary sports information director role, overseeing the public relations efforts for all 10 sports.
Brian Oakley enters his third year at Northwest as the sports information specialist, assisting with coverage of all 10 Ranger sports.
A lifelong Tate County resident, Lentz was appointed to his current role in November 2018, following a stint as the assistant sports information director that began in July 2015. He has contributed to several college athletic publications since 2015, earning awards from CoSIDA and CPRAM organizations.
Oakley formally joined the Northwest staff in August 2019 but has had a hand in various gameday duties well before then. Since 2015, Oakley has assisted in gameday production, primarily operating the videoboard at Bobby Franklin Field and handling public address announcing at Northwest men’s and women’s basketball games.
Lentz joined Northwest in July 2015 after spending two and a half years as an undergraduate student assistant at Mississippi State. He served as the women’s tennis contact for two seasons and also assisted at home football and baseball games in various roles.
Prior to joining Northwest, Oakley has held other jobs with customer service, journalism, teaching and military experience. In addition to his part-time duties at NWCC, Oakley also serves as the distance learning coordinator at Senatobia High School.
Prior to MSU, Lentz spent two and a half years in the sports information department at Northwest as a student worker, assisting with 12 sports in some capacity and serving as the public address announcer for selected Ranger baseball and softball games. In addition to his work at NWCC, Lentz was the sports editor for The Ranger Rocket for one year and a high school sportswriter for the Tate Record (formerly The Democrat).
Oakley received his Bachelor of Arts from Vanderbilt University in 1998, with focuses on political science and communication studies. While at Vanderbilt, he served as a cadet in the ROTC program and as a marketing and promotions intern in the Commodores’ athletic department, where he was responsible for gameday promotional operations, scheduling of student-athletes for campus tours, off-campus promotion of athletic contests, design of various promotional materials and retail sales of university-related apparel.
In addition to his current duties at Northwest, Lentz has also resumed work as the prep sportswriter for the Tate Record, providing coverage of all five high schools and academies located within Tate County. He also serves as the vice president of the 2YSIDA organization (Two-Year Sports Information Directors of America).
At Vanderbilt, Oakley was selected to revamp a struggling KidsZone program and helped increase kids club membership from 10-15 to over 250 per home football game. Oakley is a native of Senatobia and is the older brother of Ranger assistant football coach Scott Oakley and head men’s basketball coach Shane Oakley.
Outside of his work at Northwest, Lentz has done freelance work behind the scenes for several ESPN and SEC Network events. Lentz has volunteered at numerous preseason and postseason Southeastern Conference (SEC) events and also covered high school sports for both the Starkville Daily News and The Commercial Dispatch while in Starkville. Within the last four years, he has worked several NCAA events, including the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, the South Regional (Sweet 16/Elite Eight) of the 2017 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament and select events for the University of Memphis and Rust College. Lentz is a native of Arkabutla and holds an Associate of Arts from Northwest (2012) and a B.S. in education from Mississippi State (2015), with a focus on kinesiology and sports studies.

ATHLETIC ACADEMIC ADVISOR
ATHLETIC SECRETARY/INSURANCE COORDINATOR
Liesl Mote enters her second year as the athletic academic advisor for Northwest.
Allison Eoff begins her 12th year as the athletic secretary and insurance coordinator for the Northwest athletic department.
Mote is a familiar face around Northwest and previously served as the college’s cheer coach from 2010-19. In her first year in that role, Mote helped bring back male cheerleaders to the program after a 10-year absence, while growing the squad’s size to one of the largest cheer programs among the Mississippi JUCO ranks.
Eoff, a native of Batesville, came to Northwest in 2004 and spent four years in the Registrar’s office before moving over to Howard Coliseum in 2008. Eoff has one son, Hayden (23), and resides in Senatobia.
In her most recent work as athletic academic advisor, Mote helped Northwest student-athletes navigate through the 2020-21 academic year, which was marred by the effects of COVID-19. Under her leadership, Northwest set a new school record of 92 Academic All-MACCC selections and saw 52 other studentathletes also earn NJCAA All-Academic honors.
ERIC VANDERBURG INTRAMURAL COORDINATOR
Additionally, several Northwest teams finished with 3.0 GPAs or better, with women’s basketball and football earning MACCC Academic Team of the Year accolades. For the Lady Rangers, it was the third year in a row winning the honor, after posting a 3.41 GPA for 2020-21, while the Ranger football program’s 3.12 GPA was the only one above a 3.0 among other football-playing schools in the conference.
Vanderburg enters his third year as the Intramural Coordinator at Northwest, joining the college in August 2018.
Prior to her arrival at Northwest in August 2010, Mote spent 13 years in the Armed Forces as a SERE instructor and a federal agent. She was deployed three times as the team leader for the US Air Force anti-terrorism team, twice spending time in Iraq where she earned a bronze star and once in Pakistan.
Vanderburg arrived at Northwest from Middle Tennessee, where he spent nine years as the sports coordinator at Columbia Parks & Recreation. Prior to that, he spent one year at Lewisburg (TN) Parks & Recreation and worked with D1 Sports Training & Therapy in Nashville and the Triple-AAA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves in Richmond, Va.
Mote attended Northwest for two years and finished her bachelor’s in outdoor recreation at Eastern Washington University in 1995. She has been married to her husband, Greg, for eight years.
The East Tennessee native received his degree in sport management from Union University, where he also was a pitcher on the baseball team. He started his career at Columbia State Community College. Vanderburg is no stranger to north Mississippi, with family in the Crenshaw/ Longtown area where he resides now on his family farm.
