As I look back over the past 15 years, I am amazed at the Lord’s faithfulness to Northwestern. Since Northwestern’s beginning 115 years ago, the Bible has been at the center of every decision, change, and milestone. This school and radio network is the work of many great leaders that have come before us—each praying and seeking the Lord’s wisdom and guidance for what has been set before us. Dr. Cureton is a leader who has continued the great legacy of Northwestern with passion and excellence. As you glance through the timeline of the past 15 years, you will see how God has moved through his leadership to ensure a robust Christcentered learning environment that equips our new leaders of tomorrow for marketplace impact and influence. Dr. Cureton continues to work tirelessly to reap the blessings the Lord has graciously given to this University. I have seen firsthand Dr. Cureton’s steadfast and passionate love for the Lord, as it is the driving force for all that he does. I am deeply thankful for Dr. Cureton’s leadership and commitment to Northwestern over these past 15 years, and I look forward to how he will continue to lead Northwestern in the future.

Throughout the past 15 years, Dr. Alan and Mrs. Gayle Cureton’s leadership has brought significant changes to Northwestern—new buildings, the expansion of academic programs, multiple Fulbright scholars, new media outlets, a new name, and so much more. Each accomplishment has created growth and new opportunities to continue Northwestern’s work in equipping Christ-centered learners and listeners to invest in others and impact the world.

[Under Dr. Cureton’s leadership] the quality of education has improved, the variety of programs offered has increased so students have more choices (which allows Northwestern to serve our community even better than before), and a more grace-like environment exists on campus—all while holding true to our core Christian values. We have not compromised our core values in order to accomplish these achievements.

While I was Student Body President, Dr. Cureton took time out of his packed schedule to invest in me and process together whatever the day’s concerns held. He is a brilliantly gifted man, completely sold out to Jesus. He is confident in his calling, gifted in relationships, committed to following Jesus, and kind. He makes each person feel heard, cared about, and valued.

One of the most important lessons [Dr. Cureton] taught me through his words and actions was that you can't get hung up on what other people think of you. Even if they have good intentions, they don't know your heart. You just have to trust God and walk boldly in the path He has set before you, knowing He is big enough to take care of the rest.

It’s been a true privilege to work with Dr. Cureton in his various leadership roles within the NCAA. Al has a clear vision of what makes Division III strong and unique. He understands and embraces the student-first focus of the Division III Philosophy, and has worked hard to preserve that during his service on the Council. Al has worked tirelessly with the Board of Governors to emphasize the important role that Division III serves within our Association. His successful leadership is clearly evident in the academic and athletic success of Northwestern’s student-athletes, and in the growth of the UMAC. At every level of intercollegiate athletics within the NCAA, Dr. Cureton has represented University of Northwestern with distinction.

Mighty oak trees grow up in fertile soil. Al Cureton is the president who makes UNW into a forest for growing strong Christian leaders. He has led the university to recruit wonderful faculty and students, to develop a high quality campus, to provide financial stability, to grow a national reputation for good, and to dream exciting visions for the future. He is a president educating students who will make God look good for generations to come.
Thriving as an organization happens when you have a leader who cares about and mentors people under his span of care. Thriving happens when a leader can confront unexpected problems and with boldness and confidence mixed with humility, leads an organization through the rougher waters. It happens when a leader can build a team of co-leaders who are great at what they do and stokes a passion in them for the institution. It happens when a leader is visionary and has the strategic skills making the vision a reality. Dr. Cureton is the rare leader who embodies these qualities which is why University of Northwestern is thriving. Congratulations on the significant contributions made to Christian higher education.
