Welcome to the 2018 Bluegrass from the Forest This Festival is produced by the Kristmas Town Kiwanis Club of Shelton, WA with the support of our many community sponsors. Thank you! Welcome, we are pleased to share our 14th annual event with you and your family. In 2004 members of Kristmas Town Kiwanis volunteered to build a restroom as part of a community-wide restoration effort at Calanan Park in Shelton. It proved to be a more expensive proposition than anticipated so the group decided to organize a fund-raiser to fund the restroom construction. At about this time, Duane Wilson (a Kristmas Town Kiwanis club member), asked Greg Linder if he thought a bluegrass festival could raise funds for this project. As most of you may know, Greg is a guitar player/singer and plays in the event’s host band, Runaway Train. Greg has also performed at (or attended) almost all of the bluegrass festivals in this region, even making a few trips to Nashville to attend the International Bluegrass Music Association Festival. At about this time an article also appeared in the Shelton Mason County Journal announcing the availability of hotel/motel tax monies to help promote events in Mason County. Kristmas Town Kiwanis applied for and was awarded $5,000 to market the first annual Bluegrass From The Forest. In 2005, Kristmas Town Kiwanis produced their first festival. There was a lot to learn. The first two years the bands were only from around the region, but the bluegrass community supported the event from day one. Organizers reached out to attendees and were given great suggestions about how to improve the Festival, and it has gotten bigger and better every year! It took three years but, with the help from the community and other Kristmas Town Kiwanis projects, the restroom building at Calanan Park was completed. In 2008, Greg proposed that the group take the festival to the next level and sign a national touring band. Cedar Hill from Tennessee, plus regional bands, were signed on for the event. The change was well received and Greg has gradually increased the national groups to this year's lineup of three headliners and two regional bands plus the host band, Runaway Train. This festival could not have been possible without the great regional bands who got it started, so Greg has always includes as many as possible. Thanks for joining us and thank you to all the volunteers who helped make things run smoothly. – let’s play some Bluegrass!

Bluegrass is often referred to as music “for the people.” With mixed roots in Irish, Scottish and English traditional music, and later influenced by the music of African-Americans through blending of jazz elements, the music incorporates songs and rhythms that energizes musicians from all disciplines and backgrounds. Bluegrass attributes its early beginnings to the high lonesome sound of the Appalachian region of the United States. Fusioning together the sounds of jigs and reels–especially those played on the fiddle–settling imigrants brought with them the music of their homelands. Key to shaping the sound, was the addition of African-American blues rythms and instruments, such as the iconic banjo. The true bluegrass form of music, which had roots in the old time string bands, was invented in the mid 1940s by Bill Monroe who brought a professional quality to the music with the unique use of the core instruments (mandolin, fiddle, 5 string banjo, guitar and bass).
Bluegrass bands often formed in rural areas as musicians came together to entertain for community events. This is the basis on which the earliest bluegrass bands were organized and also for which bluegrass bands were formed in the remote logging camps around the Northwest. One such group was the Logger Orchestra led by John Sells.

Unknown to them, a light hearted admirer had either fallen out of a tree, or had climbed onto, the porch roof, and was auditing their performance.” Quote from Shelton Mason County Journal
Sells was an early day logger as well description of an image depicting John as an accomplished musician. Born Sells and his fellow musicians practicing in Iowa in 1874, after serving in the in camp. Sells began our Bluegrass from the Forest over a hundred years ago in the backcountry of the Olympic National Forest. Mile Twelve, from Boston, MA, is a fresh, hard-driving young band walking the line between original and traditional Bluegrass. Rapidly gaining recognition for outstanding performances in bluegrass and folk circles, Evan Murphy, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Nate Sabat, BB Bowness and David Benedict are writing captivating songs and performing daring instrumental pieces from diverse influences. Banjo luminary Tony Trischka says, “Mile Twelve is carrying the bluegrass tradition forward with creativity and integrity.” Since their formation in 2014, Mile Twelve has quickly risen in fame. They’ve performed throughout the U.S., Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia, including sets at major festivals such as Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, FreshGrass Festival, Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival,
and Joe Val Bluegrass Festival. Their music is in rotation on the Bluegrass Junction Sirius XM channel, and their rendition of Stanley Brothers’ “Our Last Goodbye” was featured on a Spotify “Fresh Bluegrass” playlist. The band was the winner of the 2017 Momentum Award by the International Bluegrass Music Association, and in October 2017 released their debut record “Onwards,” produced by Stephen Mougin.

The Kathy Kallick Band is based in California but their members have roots along the West Coast: Kathy and Tom are from the San Francisco Bay Area; Annie’s from Portland, Cary from Seattle; and Greg from Anchorage. Yet their mixture of original and classic material, creates a combination of traditional and contemporary sensibilities that has great universal appeal.

There is a tendency to think of West Coast bluegrass as being softer, jazzier, and somehow “other” than traditional. This can be the case, but there is also a school of bluegrass in Northern California which has, from the beginning, been steeped in Monroe-based tradition — as well as welcoming to original songs. Kathy Kallick has been leading bands in this tradition of West Coast bluegrass for many years, continuing to evolve as extraordinary composers and vocalists. Foxhounds is her 20th album, recordings which include nearly 150 of her original songs.

Foxhounds is also the fifth album for the Kathy Kallick Band. Each of their four previous releases spent a year in the upper echelon of the national bluegrass charts, and Foxhounds promises to be no exception. The material is compelling, the instrumental playing is inventive, the vocals extraordinary. And they’re truly a band, listening to and sparked by each other, contributing to the songs and the sound as a whole.

This high-energy five piece band is located in the Western Frontier state of Colorado. Their distinctive sound showcases an eclectic range of influences that marry second and third generation bluegrass, delivering a unique experience that captivates audiences and keeping them guessing: It’s a powerful “bluegrass explosion” that features world-class banjo and mandolin playing, incredible vocals, an energetic rhythm and easy stage banter that delights listeners. West Virginia native Greg Blake provides powerful bluegrass vocals with an authentic sound influenced by bluegrass, gospel, and country. Twice nominated for the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America’s (SPBGMA) “Traditional Male Vocalist of the Year” award, Greg’s phenomenal guitar playing has earned him nine nominations and five consecutive wins as SPBGMA’s Guitarist of the Year. They are joined on fiddle and vocals by Oregon’s 2016 Rockygrass Fiddle Champion, 2016 Arizona State Fiddle Champion, and 2017 IBMA Momentum Award Nominee, Ellie Hakanson. The band was featured as California’s Bluegrass Association’s Emerging Artist of the year.

If you have spent any time listening to country music that is outside of the radio charts, you will have heard the name Caleb Klauder. Caleb represents the best of the Northwest music scene and his music has inspired listeners across the globe. Touring nationally and internationally for over 20 years, he first toured with folk-rock band Calobo, a luminary in the 90’s music scene. Since 2000 his own band, the Caleb Klauder Band has been a venue for his original and timeless songs. He is a founding member of the widely celebrated Foghorn Stringband, with whom he tours regularly.
Caleb has written over 50 songs many of which are standards in honky tonk and bluegrass events, both on and off stage. There is a long list of bands and singers who have recorded Caleb’s songs over the years. Caleb’s collaborations include working with Dirk Powell and Riley Baugus both live and in the studio. Caleb has produced two albums made in Portland Oregon. He also joined forces with Jesse Lége and Joel Savoy to form the Cajun Country Revival, a honky tonk cajun country

rhythms and exciting solos. Their members come from all over the country, but the common theme is rural Mountain values found in western Montana. Richie Reinholdt (guitar, lead and harmony vocals as well as songwriter) has been a major player in the acoustic scene in western Montana for many years, sharing his knowledge of Bluegrass tradition & guitar work. John Parker (bass and vocals) has been leading bands in the Western MT area since the mid 1970s. His band Finley Creek was a mainstay in the area for many years. Steve Taft (banjo) cut his bluegrass teeth in the Seattle BG scene in many well-known bands, most recently Brother’s Keeper. He has appeared regularly with Rural Delivery and was a founding member of Lonesome Road. Chad Fadely (mandolin) has been the go-to player in Western Montana for more than 20 years. Usually active in multiple bands, Chad keeps busy playing Bluegrass style he loves and when he’s not playing mandolins or guitars, he’s selling them at Music Villa in Bozeman, Montana.

Taylor Buckley (fiddle and vocal harmony) Taylor grew up playing Bluegrass with his family band, The Buckleys. After an extended stay on the east coast, Taylor is now back in his home state of Montana.

Runaway Train has been the host band for the Bluegrass from the Forest Festival for the past 14 years. Formed in 2000 and from the Puget Sound area, they have performed throughout the Northwest at most major bluegrass festivals and other events. Although some of the member have changed over the years, their music consistently holds to traditional bluegrass, while pushing the boundaries a bit.
BLUEGRASS DOLLARS IN OUR COMMUNITY As you walk to the Performing Arts Center take a look at the metal art pieces that Kristmas Town Kiwanis donated to the Shelton High School Performing Arts Center. One is a large metal cleft, the other is a full size piano sculpture. On the Main Stage, Kristmas Town Kiwanis helped to build a thrust with the guidance of Performing Arts Center Engineer, Dave Miser. A thrust is an extension the width of the stage that brings the performers 8’ closer to the audience. KTK donated most of the materials, Olympic Panel Products donated the Medium Density Overlay and local builders led the construction effort. The thrust was built over the orchestra pit in sections so that the stage can be configured for different performances. 8 BLUEGRASS FROM THE FOREST | MAY 18-20

Contests, Activities & Workshops at 2018 Bluegrass from the Forest The Chick Rose School of Bluegrass
This is a special program for kids who want to play Bluegrass. Founded by Chick Rose, who passed away in 2012, it lives on in his memory and in the music of the many children who participate. This intensive workshop, led by Stacey Harnew and crew, runs Saturday, May 19,10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Kids are divided into groups according to their musical experience to receive coaching by advanced musicians. The program culminates in a special short performance of the participants at 6:40 PM on the Main Stage, There is no extra charge to sign your children up for this program – let’s fill the stage with kids!

Have you ever tried joining a jam where they played so fast you couldn’t keep up? We all need time to learn. If you are new to an instrument or just haven’t picked with others, play with us in a welcoming group setting.
Fiddle tunes are first played slowly and then repeated at a faster tempo. Learning to play songs cleanly and on-beat, along with gradually stepping up the tempo on the second try is one of the best ways to improve. The slow jam is led by Marv Sobolesky, music teacher and owner of Marv’s Music.

Mandolin Tasting SAT | 11:00 AM Band Room
Hosted by Tom Bekeny of Kathy Kallick Band, this brings together talented and knowledgeable mandolin players with some very nice mandolins. This differs from a Mandolin Workshop in that the focus in less on playing techniques and more on understanding the features of the instruments.
A whole lot of folks meet up at Bluegrass From the Forest and end up creating wonderful song arrangements. Some even bring original tunes. How about getting up and sharing them at our Open Mic? It’s so much of fun and there is lots of support from fellow festival goers. It could be the beginning of your new band!

Band Scramble
Sign up for the band scramble until 12:20 AM, Saturday. Participants have 40 minutes to prepare two songs which they will perform at a performance on the Showcase Stage at 1:00 PM.. The winner performs on the main stage at 1:53. The band scramble is a time honored tradition at Bluegrass festivals. Anyone who plays an instrument (at any level) is welcome to sign up to participate. Names are randomly drawn for the bands. The new bands have 40 minutes to meet, come up with an instrumental and vocal tune that they all know (or can learn quickly). Then they take it to the Showcase Stage for a live performance. The Band Scramble is led by Jana Burg, who is another tireless volunteer for Bluegrass From the Forest! Thank you!

Helping Our Community – One Duck at a Time The Bluegrass From the Forest festival is produced by the Kristmas Town Kiwanis Club. With the help of many volunteers like Shelton contractor and musician, Greg Linder, and many others who donate their time, this event is a labor of love for the community. When you meet our volunteers at the festival, we hope you’ll let them know their efforts are appreciated. For 14 years Bluegrass From The Forest has been an important fundraising event for the Kristmas Town Kiwanis. Funds earned support a variety of community projects. Your dollars spent at this event and other events that the group hosts, are put right back in to local neighborhoods!

Bluegrass From the Forest’s founding purpose, the Callanan Park Renovation, has gone way beyond the construction of a single restroom! Other improvements, over the years, have included: installation of security lighting; construction of dugout benches with metal roofs for the seating areas; construction of storage shed; scoreboard repair; installation of handicap accessible drinking fountain; as well as the construction of a children’s big toy apparatus. In addition, funding from this event has been used to support other community items including: the

Annual Duck Race at Forest Festival
Christmas parade; scholarships for graduating seniors; youth-Circle K; food baskets for the 40 et 8; Toys for Kids drives; and little league baseball and youth soccer program. In addition to the Bluegrass Festival, there are many other projects Kristmas Town Kiwanis volunteers work on each year. In June, reserve your winning duck for the Duck Race! The Kristmas Town Kiwanis kiddie train is a familiar and much loved sight at local events. It is especially popular at OysterFest, where the group also provide a variety of activities including free carnival games.
Holiday Magic in Shelton includes a Christmas parade as well as the lighting of the fir in Post Office Park. Presented the first Friday in December, Railroad is blocked for eveningbonfires and marshmallow roasting. Enjoy caroling, rides on the kiddie train and at dusk Saturday, take part in the Christmas Parade with over 50 entries as well as free cider, coffee, cookies and candy. Additional Kristmas Town Kiwanis fundraising include Aluminum Can Drives; Highway Trash Pickups; foster kids’ Christmas Wish Lists; Warm Hands Campaign in November/December in which members collect new hats and gloves to distribute to County elementary schools; and the School Supply Drive for the Mary M. Knight School; as well, the group supports sponsor Boy Scout Troop 112 and Mason County Literacy’s annual “Spellabration” event. Kiwanis International is a global organization of members dedicated to serving the children of the world. Kiwanis and its family of clubs—nearly 600,000 members strong—annually raise more than $107 million and dedicate more than 18 million volunteer hours to strengthen communities and serve children. Members of every age attend meetings, experience fellowship, raise funds for various causes and participate in service projects that help their communities.
