On behalf of the Board, Committee Members and Volunteers – Welcome! This year we are celebrating the 72nd Mason County Forest Festival, one of the longest running large festivals in Washington. The theme of this year’s Forest Festival is “We Are Timber Strong.” The winning button design was submitted by Bradley Eleton, a 5th Grade student at Southside School. Congratulations, Bradley, I think you are the youngest winner in the history of the contest! If you haven’t purchased your 2016 Forest Festival Button they are available at participating merchants and during the Paul Bunyan Grand Parade. The Paul Bunyan Grand Parade will without a doubt be as spectacular as ever. There will be something there for everyone, parade floats, dance teams, logging trucks, marching bands, classic cars, fire trucks and much more. It is an honor once again to welcome STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Western Professional Qualifier on June 4th. The competition is going to be fierce with eight of the top TIMBERSPORTS® athletes in the country competing. STIHL, John Deere and RAM Trucks, three of the major STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® sponsors,

will have booths at the Logging Show, showcasing their products. Come out to Loop Field for the Logging Show, root on your favorite competitor and visit the vendors while you are there. Forest Festival is not just the parade and the logging show, there are many other events to attend and participate in: The Goldsborough Creek Run/Walk/Jog, Firefighter’s Pancake Breakfast, The Shelton Car Show Off, The Wood Duck Race and the Spectacular Fireworks Show. This event would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors. Throughout this program you will notice the advertising from local companies and merchants – please consider them when making your next purchases. Mason County Forest Festival Association is a volunteer organization. If it were not for the volunteers of the past we would not be celebrating the 72nd Forest Festival. As with years past we are always welcoming new volunteers. If this is something that you think might interest you please contact us, give back to the community, it is very rewarding. In closing I would like to thank my fellow Board Members, Committee Chairs and all who volunteer, for all of the hard work that they have done to make this one of the best Forest Festival’s. Thanks for joining us!

A parade, a pageant, and Paul Bunyan. Mason County residents in 1945 had their own unique ideas of fire prevention. To help combat the destructive wildfires in the region — while also promoting the importance of forests to the local economy — Mason County hosted a forest festival in the spring of 1945. The festival featured a parade through downtown Shelton, a beauty pageant, a Paul Bunyan impersonator, and various other events and activities. The idea proved even more successful than imagined. Today’s event still prominently features a parade, pageant, and Paul Bunyan, just like back in 1945.

The history of Shelton is closely tied with logging operations in the area. In 1853, Michael T. Simmons built the first sawmill in Mason County on Mill Creek just south of present-day Shelton. Around this same time, David Shelton staked a settlement claim on a nearby inlet off Puget Sound.

Sol G. Simpson came to the area and founded the Simpson Logging Company in the 1890s. The Simpson Company would eventually grow and expand throughout the country, but Shelton served as an important center of operations for much of the following century. The area was also notable for being the home of the Shelton Cooperative Sustained-Yield Unit, which became active in 1946 and ended in 2002. The first Mason County Forest Festival in 1945 honored the area’s logging history by showcasing the value of timber to the community, while demonstrating the importance of safeguarding the forests against destructive fires.

Fire prevention was a prominent theme, as the Mason County Forest Festival Association was at this time operated as an auxiliary of the local chapter of the Keep Washington Green Committee. Following that first festival – in which Lois Gibler was crowned Festival Queen and Gus Anderson played the part of Paul Bunyan – the event only grew.

(continued from previous page) People from the northwestern Washington region flocked to Shelton to see, in the words of an ad for the 12th annual Forest Festival, “the dramatic Forest Pageant, the thrilling parade and the exciting contests in which loggers demonstrate their skills at falling, bucking, tree topping and truck driving.

On the festival’s final day 30,000 people — about six times the regular population of the town — crowded into Shelton to watch the Paul Bunyan Parade through downtown. The 1953 event was an early high point for the festival, but there have been many other great moments throughout the years.

For three memorable days, the communities participate in a program which you can’t afford to miss.”

The 2016 theme,“We are Timber Strong,” is a fitting tribute and an opportunity to embrace and educate about our forestry heritage.

The idea of a forest festival quickly spread across the country along with the Keep Green program. “You have in Shelton, in my opinion, the best all-around forest festival in the United States,” read a quote from a mid-1950s article on the event. “It has been the inspiration of many forest communities throughout the U.S.” The ninth annual Forest Festival in 1953 was one for the ages. The monumental event celebrated the 100th anniversary of logging operations in Mason County, and a large sign carved into a piece of Douglas fir was permanently dedicated in it’s location overlooking Shelton’s Oakland Bay.

The Mason County Forest Festival Association is a non-profit organization run by dedicated volunteers. No matter what your skills or interests the group has a vast array of tasks that need to be completed. From preparations leading up to the event to helping out the weekend of Forest Festival, volunteers are needed. Please consider volunteering or serving on the board. With your help, the Mason County Forest Festival will continue to be a memorable event for everyone – young and old.

Queen of the Forest

Hello! I am Danielle Salinas and I am honored to be the 2016 Queen of the Forest! I have been involved with my community since a young age. I’ve been involved with many things from Relay For Life to speaking on a panel for the Surgeon General of the United States and even becoming a United States Presidential Student Ambassador. I’m a strong believer in youth leadership and it’s my pride and joy to serve my community in any way possible. Recently I was accepted to Western Washington University where I plan to major in pre-medicine after completing this year at Shelton High School. My hobbies are all derived from serving my community. I find the best way to give back is to be involved with the community. One of my favorite things to do the past two years was to be a PIP’S (Players In Progress) coach. It’s a National Organization where we teach youth from kindergar-

ten to sixth grade leadership, responsibility, courage, and perseverance through basketball tricks and routines. It brings me great pride to be Queen of the Mason County Forest Festival.

dance since I was four years old. I am currently a member of the Shelton High School Dance Team and the Shelton Dance Center. Other than dance, I am Bulletin Editor for the High School Key Club and member of the National Honors Society. Outside of school, I love riding quads, spending time with my family and loved ones, and playing with my many pets! My most unique pet is my miniature pot belly pig, Ellie, because she is not a normal pig... She does tricks such as jump, sit, and spin! I look forward to representing Mason County and making great memories. This year’s Forest Festival will be the best yet!

I am actively involved in the community with our Kitten Rescue Center where I help support and nurture hundreds of felines every year. I also enjoy volunteering at First Baptist Church in programs such as Awana and Sunday school where I help minister to kids in our community. At school, I participate in a variety of clubs and am currently the President of German Club and also on the ASB board. Being active in these clubs has taught me many leadership skills. I look forward to working with the Court and representing Mason County with the best that I can be.

On a nice summer day, you’ll most likely find me in my backyard tie dying. My love for tie dye translates into my personality. I am currently a senior at Shelton High School and am 17 years of age. Being chosen as Paul Bunyan this year has given me the opportunity to show a way to give back to this community, as a key role and representative of Mason County. In school, I am currently an Honors Society member, where I will graduate with honors in June. I am also an athlete that has had the opportunity to compete in Cross-Country and Track & Field for four years. As I have enjoyed my four years in high school everything must come to an end. After High school I plan to attend Washington State University, where I will receive my Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Or I will attend community college for two years then transfer to Washington State University to save money. I am looking forward to this opportunity and can’t wait to see what memories I will make this year.

We are excited to host the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series Western Professional Qualifier again this year on June 4th at Loop Field. The 2016 competition will be first class again once again. We are excited to welcome eight of the top TIMBERSPORTS® athletes competing here for a chance to move onto the U. S. Pro & and Collegiate Championship, July 15 and 16, at Tinley Park Convention Center in Chicago. Two of this year’s competitors, Walt Page of Tollhouse, California, and Jeff Skirvin of Clatskanie, Oregon advanced to the finals at the US Championship last year in Central Park, New York. Walt finished in fourth place and Jeff in eighth place. In the finals these two guys faced off against each other in the Hotsaw Competition. They posted the top times of 5.78 and 5.79 seconds with Walt winning by a hundredth of a second. Other athletes competing in Shelton this year include Brain Bartow of Molalla, Oregon; Mike Forrester of Ideleyld, Oregon; David “Junior” Moses of Snoqualmie, Washington; Josh Stoken of Hoquiam,

Washington; David Green of Bend, Oregon and Rob Waibel of West Linn, Oregon. Established in 1985, the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series brings lumberjacks from around the globe to compete. This Series Professional events have been broadcasted on ABC Network. Since 2011, with the growing popularity of the Series and growth of international competitions, the U.S. Series has only been open to U.S. athletes in the regional qualifiers. The World Championship competitions are the venue for international competition. There are 40 total open slots, 8 from each region, for professionals looking to compete and qualify for the championship. Athletes are ranked, and then divided up with ten athletes per region based on ranking and home location. The top four individuals from each region then move on to the championship venue.

The events for the qualifying portion of this show are the Standing Block Chop, Underhand Chop, SingleBuck, Spring Board Chop, Stock Saw and Hotsaw. During the breaks between the qualifying events we will have the following events: On the Spar Poles- Speed Climbing and Topping; In the birling pond we will have the fan favorite – log rolling. Join us Saturday, June 4 at Loop Field after the Paul Bunyan Grand Parade. Visit the vendors and enjoy the show. Loop Field has been the site of most of the Forest Festival Logging Shows since 1943. In fact Loop Field is one of the places where logging competition first got started in the USA. It truly is a grand setting with the lush green grass and the back drop of the majestic fir trees. I am grateful to the City of Shelton in particular Parks and Recreation for the way they go the extra mile in maintaining Loop Field.

One of the most famous and popular North American folklore heroes, Paul is usually described as a giant as well as a lumberjack of unusual skill, and is often accompanied in stories by his animal companion, Babe the Blue Ox. Nearly 40 states & provinces have some form of Bunyan to be proud of – Shelton is no exception. In the early 1960’s, the Bingers Brothers brought Paul Bunyan, a fiberglass statue of legendary proportions to stand tall overlooking the local Binger gas station in Shelton.

Later Babe was added to his side. With the restoration of Paul and Babe, Mason County has been able to step back into the ranks of the communities throughout North America that celebrate the heritage that is represented by these logging folk lore legends.

Through Paul’s history in Shelton he had many faces and many locations, until he eventually fell into ruin. In 1995, Lloyd Prouty and a group of friends stepped forward and took on the daunting task to restore Paul.

As the Paul Bunyan Grand Parade goes through downtown Shelton, June 4th, be sure to check out the hydraulic limbo action as Paul navigates the power lines!

Paul Bunyan and Blue are iconic mascots for Shelton and Mason County, visiting parade and festivals throughout the Northwest. They are also great draws for tourists to the area. Thank you, Lloyd Prouty, sponsors and volunteers, for dreaming big -really BIG- and bringing us Paul and Babe.

Paul Bunyan Grand Parade

Parade begins at 11:00 AM on Railroad Avenue in downtown Shelton. Interested in having a parade float or featuring your business or group? Visit www.masoncountyforestfestival.org for details an application.

In the 1940’s Elmer Manke began a family’s legacy as a timber family in the Pacific Northwest. He and his circle saw are the foundation for what was, and to many people still is, a crucial part of the economy in the logging town of Shelton, Washington. Today Shelton has become more than a logging town, but its timber ties are evidenced by Forest Festival, “High Climbers” and the waterfront dominated by the wood products industry. In the 1940’s Elmer Manke along with sons Chuck and Virgil founded Manke and Sons, Inc. This began a family legacy as a timber, forestry and logging family in the Pacific Northwest. In 1963 Manke and Sons acquired a plot of land on the north bank of Tacoma. This became the first mill of Manke Lumber Company. In 1965 Manke and Sons changed its name to Manke Lumber Company when Elmer retired from the lumber business. Today Manke Lumber Company is still a family owned business with ties to virtually every aspect of the wood products industry. They continue to explore new technologies and business practices to protect resources and provide quality products to their customers. The Forest Festival is an important way in which Manke Lumber honors and celebrates our community’s heritage. Manke has been a proud sponsor of the Forest Festival’s fireworks show for the past 12 years, among many of the clubs and events they sponsor in the community. Annually Manke Lumber has supported the spectacular fireworks show Saturday evening of the Forest Festival event. The fireworks start as the sun sets on Shelton, Saturday evening, May 30. Come early as the parking lots fill quickly while families settle in to surround the viewing areas near Shelton’s Oakland bay Junior High off Kneeland Boulevard. Good spots include the Fred Meyer and Walmart parking lots. The Mason County community and the Forest Festival Association and volunteers thank Manke Lumber and the Manke family for their continued commitment to the community and our wonderful timber heritage –now and into the future!

It all started in 1990 when Darrel Andrews suggested adding a car show to the Sunday of Forest Festival weekend. Over two and a half decades later the community still comes together to celebrate this great addition to the event.

The name was later changed to the Shelton Car Show-Off and event moved a few times in the early years, but returned to its home on Olympic Hwy where it fills eight city blocks from “C” Street to “K” Street.

In 2007, the Shelton High School NJROTC Booster Club became involved in operating the Show-Off and has been organizing the show since 2010.

Helen Thomson, Car ShowOff Chair, adds, “The Shelton Car Show-Off continues to be a success because of all the support from the car owners, the local businesses that help Proceeds from this event help sponsor the event costs and support the Forest Festival and the dedication of the cadets the NJROTC cadets’ citizenship/ and volunteers that participate leadership program and activities. every year.” Thank you to The Booster Club is able to help NAPA Auto Parts, Les Schwab send cadets to leadership acadeTires, Gillis Auto Center and my and competitions with funds The Shopper for sponsoring they raise from the car show. this event. Roughly six months of planning go into hosting the Car ShowOff. On the day of the show, it takes nearly 50 volunteers to operate! In recent years as many as 400 cars have registered for the show. Cars come from all over Washington, some from Oregon, Idaho and even one from Alaska.

The event is Sunday, June 5th from 10 AM – 3 PM and is free to spectators. Car registration is 8 AM – 11AM on “G” Street. The car registration fee is $20 per car. There will also be food vendors on site.

With the help of Jerry Larimer, the A & W restaurant was a registration point for that first show and they used the Mountain View neighborhood as the location for the event. For a time, the Shelton T.O.W.N.E. (Through Our Wheels Nostalgia Endures) Cruisers helped put on the car show and raised funds to provide scholarships to Mason County students that planned to work in the auto industry. Scholarships were later broadened to include vocational and technical skills.

Buttons worth collecting! Collecting Forest Festival buttons has been a hobby of Dr. Grimes of Shelton, WA since 1985. One of his complete collections is on display at the Shelton Civic Center for all to see. The first year of the Forest Festival was 1945 and the button was of Smokey Bear. The button was also printed in yellow and brown and is a very rare find according to Dr. Grimes. He continues to look for that button as well as ones from 1946, 47, 48, 98 and the nickel-sized children’s buttons from the early years.

One button, the 2004, was issued incorrectly with the first year of the festival as 1944 instead of 1945. Want to start your own collection? Check out the purchase locations on the next page for details on where you can pick up your 2016 button!

Thank you – again – to Amy & Forrest Cooper for “capturing” the Festival each year! Almost as important as having a great community event that encompasses so many elements of an area’s traditions and heritage – is having great photographers who can capture the spirit and preserve the memories. Some early memories of Forest Festival only remain in a tattered black and white image; but even so, are still immensely powerful. Amy and Forrest Cooper, have taken on the task of capturing and freely sharing their images of events such as the coronation, parade and logging show! Amy & Forrest Cooper are a husband and wife creative team; who own and operate Cooper Studios, located on Railroad Ave. in Shelton. Both hold BFA degrees, in visual communications. Their “focus” is on perfection and quality mixed with extensive professional experience – and a whole lot of talent! Handmade in Shelton, their Fine Art Portraits are captured, retouched, printed, and custom framed by the Cooper’s themselves. This process gives them the control to create finished works of the highest quality. Forrest and Amy are ever ready to lend their skills at community events and, consequently, bring a level of professionalism to everything they are involved in. Cooper Studios is honored to be only the 4th photographer ever to create the official Queen of the Forest Portrait and continues the tradition of portrait photography on Railroad Ave.

Brady Trucking goes to great heights to bring top quality landscaping products!

Thank you, Forrest & Amy for all you do!

As a major forest products enterprise in Mason County, Green Diamond Resource Company is a long standing supporter of the Mason County Forest Festival. Thank you! “So many people have kept this tradition alive over the years,” said Paul Wing, vice president and general manager of Green Diamond’s Northwest Division, based in Shelton. “On behalf of Green Diamond and the forest products industry, I want to thank each of the hard-working volunteers who are carrying this legacy forward today.” Wing and others at Green Diamond remember as children watching the parade, logging

As a senior at North Mason High School in 1974, Wing was chosen as Paul Bunyan. He remembers having to maneuver the giant ax to get under the power lines. Today’s Paul Bunyan stands on a platform midway up the stack of logs, instead of perching on top.

Green Diamond’s employees are responsible for diverse activities in the forest such as planting 2 million-plus trees per year, laying out harvest units with protection for fish, wildlife and clean water, logging trees to be made into homes and other wood products around the world, or providing support to these management activities, Green Diamond celebrate Forest Festival every day. One of Green Diamond’s unique contributions to Forest Festival is a field day, open to 5th graders throughout Mason County. Each year, since 2000, some 400 students learn the value of a tree, an applied math exercise; the habitat in a streamside buffer; forest history, including the teamwork required in operating a crosscut saw; how to set a choker and fell a tree; and how “round” logs are made into “square” lumber, among other lessons. Thank you to Green Diamond for their continued involvement and support of the Mason County Forest Festival. The community and Mason County Forest Festival Association truly appreciate you continued support and connection to this important community event packed with pride and heritage. We are proud to be Timber Strong with you!

Most of the heart-pumping skills exhibited in the logging show are relics from days of old. “These days, we try to get as many people as possible into machine cabs and out of harm’s way,” said Wing. Still, logging can be a dangerous business, which is why Green Diamond is particularly proud of its logging crew’s safety record. The crew hasn’t had a lost time accident in over seven years, an extraordinary feat for such hazardous work. “It’s particularly impressive when you consider that over half of our crew has been on the job five years or less,” Wing commented.

It never ceases to amaze me how beautiful the views are in Mason County! Equally amazing is how close Mason County is to the rest of the civilization, yet how pristine and abounding with recreational opportunities and community events! Even when the sun isn’t shining, cresting the hill on Highway 101, after a fresh fall of snow in the mountains, you are hit smack in the windshield with a view to rival any wonder of the world!

Take a journey to your backyard. Take a sick day. It will become a health day for the whole family as you remember what is to share in the rich traditions of being an integral piece of a community.

All of us are going a million directions at once and our lives are scheduled and over scheduled– and we are still not getting it all done. Just for a moment pause. Put down the iPhone. Unplug the games. When was the last time you cheered on the under-hand chop contest? Admired classic cars? Ate cotton candy? Spun uncontrollably on the Twister?

Mason County is full of opportunities for you to connect with friends, family and make new friends – the annual Forest Festival celebrates and embodies these! Enjoy your local community and your Festival. Get the whole family involved –you never know you when might discover something wonderful!

Don’t miss–

After the parade be sure to head down to Loop Field for great entertainment – not just the Logging Show –music, awards, arts and crafts vendors, food booths and children’s activities. See you there!

Lori Gorby I MCFFA Secretary

Janis Carter | MCFFA Vice-President

I was raised in Raymond, where my father was a log truck driver, so I definitely feel at home here. I Iove seeing the log trucks, watching the tug boats– yes, and even waiting for a train. (Well, sometimes). I heard that the Forest Festival Committee was in need of volunteers if the festival were to continue. Somehow I couldn’t picture there not being a float that represented our great County or bands that represent our schools. This event brings citizens together to celebrate all the beauty that God gave us. So I went to a meeting to see if there was something this “little-ole-lady” could do to help make a difference. I was needed. It was the time to come out of my comfort zone, step up, and say “How can I help?”

Before I knew it I was the Vice-President as well as the Grand Parade Chair. I won’t say I am not nervous about all this responsibility – but I have lots of help and support from the fine group of people who are also so sincere about keeping our Mason County Forest Festival a living legend for many years to come. I hope the citizens of Mason County will feel the same motivation and get involved in our community. There’s always a spot for you. See you there!

It’s important to have these family events to celebrate our Mason County heritage. Just being part of an organization that promotes and recognizes Mason County provides me a great sense of pride and spirit.

Judy Bidwell | MCFFA Treasurer

Have you ever noticed that everyone smiles when they talk about Festival memories? The MC Forest Festival is one of the longest running festivals in WA and each year brings new memories, the kind you smile about. When I moved here in the ‘90s, one of the delightful surprises was the Mason County Forest Festival and the Paul Bunyan Grand Parade. How excited I was to live in a small town where they still have parades! This event really unites the community – if you’re not in the parade, you’re watching it!

From the parade and logging show to the fireworks and the car show – Forest Festival is filled with free family fun that is sure to generate a smile when you relate your event memories! I hope you and your family enjoy making your own wonderful memories during the 71st annual Forest Festival.

Sierra Pacific Industries

3RD GENERATION FOREST PRODUCTS

Sierra Pacific Industries, based in Anderson, CA recently purchased the Simpson mill in Shelton. The company owns and manages nearly 1.9 million acres of timberland in California and Washington, and is among the largest lumber producers in the United States. SPI is committed to managing its lands in a responsible and sustainable manner to protect the environment while providing quality wood products and renewable power for consumers. To SPI, sustainable forest management means more than just planting trees. Harvesting trees is much different than it was 50 or 100 years ago – today SPI employ modern forest management practices that closely mimic natural forest events. Technology has dramatically improved, and with it, the ability to monitor forest conditions and minimize impact on the environment. Sierra Pacific has invested in state-of-the-art equipment to optimize every fiber of each tree and are certified participants in the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) to help ensure forests are here for generations to come. The expertise of foresters and natural resource specialists assures that wildlife habitat, water quality, and other forest values are protected. Maintaining biodiversity is one of the goals of Sierra Pacific’s land management. Promoting a natural mix of flora and fauna is important to our timberland managers. Sierra Pacific grows a wide array of native tree and shrub types vital to the survival of the many wildlife species that inhabit our forestlands. Sierra Pacific has special landscape plans designed to ensure the survival of sensitive species, such as the Northern Spotted Owl and the Pacific Fisher. Sierra Pacific Industries is a Platinum Festival Sponsor of the 2016 Mason County Forest Festival. We welcome them to the community, thank them for their support, and wish SPI success in Mason County – now and into the future.
