Message from THE PRESIDENT

I

t is with a great deal of excitement and pride that we present the first published Northwest Mississippi Community College Foundation Annual Report. The Foundation / Alumni Office, under the leadership of Patti Gordon, along with her dedicated team members, Jenny Hurt and Stephanie Cook, orchestrated a fantastic year in spite of a worldwide pandemic. Their team is small, but the results for 2020 are large, indeed. On behalf of our college, I commend and congratulate these dedicated professionals. Thanks to our generous community of supporters, total giving in 2020 exceeded that of 2019, and was just shy of $1 million. Our Foundation successfully held our second annual Rangers Giving Day, raising over $28,000, with an unprecedented 86% of giving from faculty and staff. Thank you, NWCC employees! The “Investing Today, Impacting Tomorrow” capital campaign kicked off in November and is already experiencing tremendous success. The successes in the Foundation Office equate to providing students hope for the future. In addition to the successes of the Foundation, the college has experienced incredible progress, again, dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are just a few of the accomplishments: • Groundbreaking on our new 168-bed residence hall • Design of our new performing arts center and soccer/softball complex at the Senatobia Campus with groundbreaking of the performing arts center on December 10 • Enrollment growth in health science programs college-wide; • New Utility Lineworker Program in Olive Branch; • New facility in Water Valley—Everest—with opportunities for residential and commercial electrical training, Healthcare Assistant, credit coding programs, and workforce training; • Construction is continuing for The Concourse in Panola County with a new Diesel Technology Program to begin Fall, 2021. These successes, both for the college and the Foundation / Alumni Office, are nothing short of amazing, and we are thankful, not only to the teams of professionals on all of our campuses, but, especially, to our donors who give generously and sacrificially, to the government officials who provide funding and support, and to our students who have adapted to these unusual times. We can celebrate the past, we can work hard each day in the present, and we can most assuredly be confident in the future of Northwest Mississippi Community College.

Message from THE BOARD CHAIR

S

taggering. The one word that comes to mind when I look at the history, accomplishments, and goals of the Northwest Mississippi Community College Foundation. A small group of donors sharing their resources to soften the costs of education blossomed into an excess of $ 13,000,000 funding over 365 scholarship opportunities for Northwest Students. These scholarships aren’t just dollars, they are opportunity. Opportunity for young people and adults alike to advance themselves through continued education and technical training. Real education and experiences that will help enable them to realize the fullest of their potentials. As much as the historical success of Northwest amazes me, the future is even more encouraging. A capital campaign was announced in November, 2020, enhancing and increasing training and educational exposure both on and off campus. An increased emphasis on the arts and campus living will also benefit the college, as well as introducing new donors and potential donors to the Northwest experience. As Chairman of this Foundation’s Board, it has been a joy and a privilege to work with Foundation staff and board members serving the college and community. Every dollar raised, every dollar spent is making a pronounced impact in our community and those communities around us. To all who donate, volunteer, and serve. I sincerely thank you. The future is brighter than ever, and the work has just begun.

Accounting Coordinator/ Administrative Assistant

indsight is 20-20! As we look in the rearview mirror at the year 2020, we see some positive accomplishments by a dedicated team in the Foundation / Alumni Office, and with the support of our President, Dr. Michael Heindl, our committed Foundation Board, and YOU, our faithful donors. Here are the highlights: • Secured our first million dollar gift • Completed feasibility study with 143 individuals, receiving overwhelmingly positive responses for our college • Kicked off the first-ever capital campaign at NWCC • Established Student Relief Initiative to help students affected by the pandemic • Exceeded our goal for Rangers Giving Day through the generosity of our alumni, faculty, staff, businesses, and friends • Introduced the inaugural Ranger Run • Increased Lifetime Memberships in the Alumni Association • Launched Giving Societies • Received contributions in 2020 that exceeded those given in 2019 So what do these positive accomplishments mean for Northwest and our students? For students who are struggling to come up with gas money to get back and forth to campus, we provided gas cards. For students who didn’t have what they needed for virtual learning, we purchased iPads to begin a technology loaner program. For nursing students who lacked the funds to pay for the licensing exams necessary for them to enter the healthcare field, we provided those funds. For many students (557 to be exact), we awarded scholarships. And, we have raised funds for exciting new projects that will positively affect the students and communities we serve. You have helped to ease the stress for our students during this time of uncertainty. Your generous gifts in a year that, otherwise, looked bleak, are appreciated and applauded. You are to be commended for looking past the negative and choosing to shed positive light on this place we call Northwest and enriching the lives of our students. We survived 2020, and we believe that the best is yet to come! With the launch of the Investing Today, Impacting Tomorrow capital campaign, we see even more promise on the horizon. We are eager to continue funding scholarships for our students as well as to broaden our support for the innovative growth of NWCC. I am sincerely grateful for you, our devoted supporters, for your continued loyalty to the NWCC Foundation.

Value of Foundation Endowment

2020 surely tested the economy and the markets as well as our daily lives. While many businesses struggled, the resilience of the United States was on display with extraordinary efforts led by the U.S. Federal Reserve to keep the economy moving forward, and the stock market went on to set new highs in 2020. We learned that our economy is much more nimble than people thought. For the Foundation’s portfolio, we utilize a balanced approach with both a focus on growth and income. To implement this strategy, we use world class money managers to provide essential diversification in size, style, and sectors. Following the Foundation’s Investment Policy Statement, our target allocation is 45% equity and 55% fixed income. For Fiscal year 2020, the Foundation had an impressive 10.02% rate of return. The Foundation’s growth coupled with your generous support has enabled us to impact the lives of so many students through the scholarships provided. As we look forward, we are hopeful and encouraged for what lies ahead in a post-pandemic environment. With your ongoing support of The Foundation we believe that we can continue to positively impact the lives of many.

1ST MILLION DOLLAR GIFT

DUNLAP & KYLE LOYAL SUPPORTER

Longtime Northwest Mississippi Community College business supporter Dunlap & Kyle is a company not just concerned with its own success but also in the educational success of Northwest students. The company’s generosity was on full display when it recently bestowed the Northwest Foundation’s first $1 million gift. Bobby Dunlap, founder of Gateway Tire and CEO of Dunlap & Kyle in Batesville, built his businesses after leaving the Navy in 1953. He transformed the Mule Barn, his father’s side business that was basically a junkyard, into one of Mississippi’s largest family-owned companies. Since then, the business has grown into a family of companies that also includes Hesselbein Tire Co. and Gateway Tire. Dunlap & Kyle is both a retail and wholesale business, but most of their business is wholesale. As of 2016, the company had 58 retail locations, located mostly in the South, and 16 wholesale distribution centers, located from northern Ohio to south Texas. Northwest has been a consistent recipient of the company’s generosity for years. Though Dunlap’s office is covered with plaques, photos and framed letters of thanks, he makes it clear that his company is not in the business of helping people for the accolades. “It’s a nice thing to get an award, but you just come out better if you help, especially in a place like Mississippi,” he said. “A lot of kids need help, and as long as the schools are helping them, I don’t mind helping the schools.” As for Dunlap & Kyle’s recent historic gift to the Foundation, Dunlap knows it will be put to good use. “I think Northwest and the other community colleges do more for the community than people realize,” Dunlap said. “I know there are a lot of good kids at Northwest.” Dunlap is serving as Honorary Chairman of the “Investing Today, Impacting Tomorrow” capital campaign for the college.

Mr. Lewis Adolphus Graeber, Sr.,

THE GRAEBER FOUNDATION A DEDICATED FOUNDATION

In 22 years of giving to the Northwest Mississippi Community College Foundation, first as Graeber Brothers, Inc., and later as The Graeber Foundation, this exceptional family has given $471,000, all of which has been used to provide scholarships, primarily to students living in the Mississippi Delta. Graeber Brothers, Inc., was founded by Mr. Lewis Adolphus Graeber, Sr., and his two sons, Lewis Adolphus Graeber, Jr., and James “Jim” Peyton Graeber. Based in Marks, Graeber Brothers, Inc. served the citizens of Mississippi from 1937 until 2005 as an LP Gas distributor. The Graeber brothers both served honorably in World War II, Lewis Graeber as a lieutenant commander in the Navy and stationed in Pearl Harbor, and Jim Graeber as a captain in the Army in command of an artillery battery in Europe. Both brothers also attended Southwestern in Memphis, now Rhodes College. They were skilled entrepreneurs whose business flourished, and they were generous philanthropists, not only to the Northwest Foundation, but also to the University of Mississippi, Belhaven University, The Baddour Center, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Delta State University, French Camp Academy, and many others. The Graeber Foundation has given sacrificially and consistently to many worthwhile causes in addition to education, such as health care for children, medical research and assistance for the elderly. “It is institutions like Northwest Mississippi Community College that allow our foundation to fulfill part of our mission of providing educational opportunities for the young people in our area,” said Bill Graeber, son of Lewis Graeber. “God has blessed the Graeber family, and supporting the needs of others is important to us. We consider it a ministry.” The Northwest Foundation is grateful for the faithful contributions the Graeber Foundation has made to build an endowment that will provide scholarships to many students for as long as this college exists.

JENNIFER WILLIAMS A DEVOTED EMPLOYEE/ALUMNA

Jennifer Williams, a 1981 Northwest alumna and the College’s current director of Adult Education, credits the Northwest Foundation for helping adult students achieve their goals. Personally, Williams’ family has two scholarship endowments through the Foundation; one for her husband Steve’s parents, The Robert and Mary Ellen Williams Endowed Scholarship, and one for her parents, The Thomas and Jane Murphy Endowed Scholarship, endowed by Williams and her two siblings. Williams and her husband are also supportive of the Northwest Foundation’s ongoing capital campaign. “I understand the importance of giving back to help our students,” she said. “I see the value of the scholarships up close because the Foundation has been very supportive of students in Adult Education.” In her own days as a Northwest student, Williams played the clarinet for the band, performed in the Color Guard and served on the Student Disciplinary Committee. Her memories of that time are fond, especially considering that she arrived on campus with built-in friends, a number of fellow Coldwater High School graduates. “It was great,” she said. “All of our friends, we all went from high school to Northwest, and it was a great stepping stone for us. It was a great atmosphere like it is now, very close-knit.” Williams went on to graduate from Mississippi State University after earning her associate’s degree from Northwest. Her mother was a teacher, and her father was a principal, and she followed in their footsteps, teaching at a handful of schools before accepting her current position five years ago. “It’s very rewarding,” she said. “We’re able to help people change their lives, and it’s just wonderful to see their success. Our Adult Education team is incredible, and we all work so well together.” Reflecting on her time as a student and now as an employee of the College, Williams said one thing has stayed the same. “We’ve seen so much growth since then, but it still has that same feeling,” she said. “It’s truly a community.”

NORTHCENTRAL ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE A STEADFAST COMMUNITY PARTNER

Northcentral Electric Cooperative is taking a hands-on approach to making an impact in the local communities the company serves, showcased through its robust support for Northwest that has manifested in more than just scholarships. Northcentral is a locally-owned, operated and governed electric cooperative that has been serving north Mississippi since 1950. The company’s CEO Kevin Doddridge, who also serves as chairman of Northwest’s Foundation board, said he cannot pinpoint exactly when Northcentral began supporting Northwest, but it began in the form of offering a scholarship or two in recognition of retirees. “We determined that probably one of the biggest needs was to make it easier for people who needed to continue their education to go to school,” Doddridge said. “We kind of took on the adage at Northcentral that an associate’s degree is the new high school diploma, and we really wanted to encourage people to continue their education after high school, whether it was in a technical training or an academic training.” In the last five years, the company began taking a closer look at what more it could do for the college, and ultimately decided to begin offering more in-kind support. One example of this is its partnership with Northwest in creating the college’s Utility Line Worker program in 2019. Doddridge said there would be a heavy emphasis on this particular partnership in upcoming years as demand for this skillset continues to climb. Though Doddridge said the Foundation is excellent at making Northcentral feel appreciated for all of its contributions, the real reward is in results. “The return you get is when you see a community improving itself, and you have individuals improving themselves,” he said. “You know for a fact that Northwest had a hand in that, and we have a hand in making Northwest a place where young adults and adults want to go to continue their education or their technical training.” Doddridge hopes Northcentral’s proactive relationship with the college is just one of many. “Looking forward, I think the relationship will just get better as the Northcentrals of the world don’t just look at scholarships, but look at capital campaigns and more ways to bring people who may not have had an experience with Northwest to look at the school as a way to give and interact with the community as a whole,” he said. “Northwest is community.”

DEVONTRE BURDETTE A 2020 EXEMPLARY GRADUATE

A heart condition ultimately led Devontre Burdette to attend college at Northwest, but the Fall 2020 graduate said he now could not imagine having gone anywhere else. A Senatobia native, Burdette attended Senatobia High School, where he excelled in athletics. He was initially offered a baseball scholarship from another college, but life took a sharp turn when he was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), or an enlarged heart. He quit playing sports, and decided to enroll at Northwest to be closer to his support system at home. He was awarded multiple scholarships, including the Kirk and Carole Moore Endowed Scholarship from the Northwest Foundation. As a student, Burdette studied Exercise Science, and was a highly involved man-about-campus, working as a Pathfinder (student recruiter), a peer mentor for Student Support Services and a tutor for students taking English and College Algebra classes. Burdette plans to become a physical therapist. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he intends to go to medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center or the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis. Though he is passionate about sports, he said he does not want to limit himself to the athletic arena, career-wise, but instead serve all types of people through his education that began at Northwest. His dream is to one day own a chain of physical therapy clinics. Now enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), where he studies kinesiology and minors in coaching, Burdette said the things he appreciated about Northwest were many. “Definitely the class sizes and how helpful the teachers were,” he said. “It was a family atmosphere. There are a lot of people I think of as family there that I know I could reach out to. I had a lot of opportunities at Northwest. I also feel that Northwest prepared me well for the classes I’m in now.”
