Be patient, relaxed and focused when dealing with school-related people and situations. Be aware of your surroundings. Take a campus tour and learn where buildings and offices are located. Become familiar with school administrators. It will help you to know your financial aid adviser, admissions counselor and academic adviser. 3

Here’s a quick guide to making sense of financial aid. Be sure to pick up your in-depth guide to financial aid at Northwest from the Financial Aid Office after you apply for admission or visit northwestms.edu/financialaid.
Financial Aid
HOW DO I GET FINANCIAL AID? You must FIRST fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.gov to receive any type of aid.
WHAT NEXT? There are four different ways you can receive funds to help pay for your education. They are listed here, so find which one best meets your needs and qualifications!
GRANTS By filling out the FAFSA, you have already applied for Federal Pell Grant. Then go to www.ihl.state.ms.us to fill out the application for the two grants available to Mississippians.
LOANS Students who still need assistance covering their cost of attendance while in school can apply for Federal Direct Loans that they must pay back after graduation.
SCHOLARSHIPS Adult Student Scholarship – These scholarships are limited in number and awarded to Mississippi residents. Applicants must be 25 years of age and must enroll in and maintain 15 semester hours. Scholarship applications are reviewed by a committee and awarded based on financial need, credit hours previously earned and academic achievement. Howard Carpenter High School Equivalency Scholarships – These scholarships are awarded to the residents of the Northwest district who have scored 600 or above on the GED test or 75 or above on the HiSet. Awards are for entering freshmen. Recipients must enroll in and maintain 15 semester hours as well as the required grade point average of 2.0 during their enrollment. Application information must be completed prior to the start of a semester.
WORK-STUDY The work-study program provides on-campus jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay for educational expenses. Positions are available in many locations on campus. For more information, such as how to apply and what jobs are available, visit our Work-Study tab on our website (under the Future Students tab then click on Financial Aid) where you will find the documents needed to start your new on-campus job.

Take your first two years at Northwest and finish at the University of Mississippi, all in one convenient location! The associate degree is offered by Northwest, and the bachelor’s degree is offered by Ole Miss in a variety of programs through the 2+2 Program at the DeSoto Center in Southaven.
