PIRATES OF PENZANCE

MARCH 29, 2023

This New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players production is your chance to get carried away by Pirates. Join the band of swashbuckling buccaneers, bumbling British bobbies, frolicsome Victorian maidens, and the delightfully dotty “model of a modern Major-General” for a rollicking romp over the rocky coast of Cornwall. This exuberant musical theater masterpiece, directed and conducted by Albert Bergeretwith choreography by Bill Fabris, is performed in its original format. The rich sounds of a full orchestra, chorus, and vocal soloists resonate with classic elegance and power while the company’s vibrancy, energy, and contemporary sense of humor keep the show alive and exciting to a modern audience.

The Pirates of Penzance or The Slave of Duty was first performed at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York City on December 31, 1879. It was the only Gilbert & Sullivan operetta to have its world premiere in the United States and it has remained popular both here and throughout the English-speaking world ever since. Gilbert’s wit and Sullivan’s memorable score (including the original tune from which “Hail, hail the gang’s all here” is drawn) are among the most valuable treasures of musical theater history.

The plot of Pirates centers on the dilemma of young Frederic who, as a child, was mistakenly apprenticed to the pirates until his twenty-first birthday. Since he was born in a leap year on February 29, he is honor bound to remain a pirate until the distant date of 1940, despite his moral objection to piracy. Helping Frederic to deal with this unusual predicament are the brash Pirate King, Ruth - the pirate maid-of-all-work, romantic Mabel, and the delightfully stuffy Major-General Stanley.

Donny Edwards is an international, multi-awardwinning professional Elvis tribute artist. Today, he is one of the most-sought after performers in the business, bringing his show to stages in casinos, theaters/venues, fairs/festivals, corporate/ special events, cruises and production shows, worldwide. He is a versatile performer with the ability to re-enact each era of Elvis’ life and career. His dynamic performance will take you back to the 1950’s and the early years of rock ‘n’ roll, getting you “all shook up”, all over again.

Then you’ll go on a ride through the 1960’s, from Elvis’ biggest hit movies to the famous black leather “68 Comeback Special”. Finally, you’ll revisit the legendary Las Vegas years of the 1970’s as Donny recreates the performances that made Elvis the one and only “King of Rock n’ Roll”. Donny Edwards maintains a performance of remarkable authenticity. His humility, charm and southern manner, coupled with his uncanny sound and appearance, will make you feel as if you are watching “The King”, himself.

Bobby Rush, born Emmett Ellis Jr. in Homer, Louisiana, is one of the nation’s most distinguished and well-loved bluesmen and performers. Twanging a guitar since he was 11 years old, Rush’s style incorporates elements of blues, rap, and funk, which has earned him 13 Blues Music Awards. In 2017, at the age of 83, he won his first Grammy Award for the album Porcupine Meat and has been nominated for the prestigious accolade six times. Long-ranked as one of the blues’ best storytellers, Rush is an inductee of the Blues Hall of Fame, Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame, and Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame.

The bluesman’s charisma and way with an anecdote have also made him a go-to subject for filmmakers. In 2003, he starred in “The Road to Memphis,” an episode of the Martin Scorsese-produced documentary series The Blues that aired on PBS stations nationwide. He appeared in the 2014 documentary Take Me to the River alongside Terrence Howard, Snoop Dogg, and Mavis Staples. That same year, he joined Dan Aykroyd

on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform two songs backed by The Roots, marking his first latenight television appearance. In 2015, he appeared in the documentary I Am the Blues, and in 2019 came the Emmy-nominated Dolemite Is My Name. His performance itinerary has encompassed some of the largest music events around the world, from Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis to Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia, countless European engagements, the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, Bonnaroo, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Rush was the first bluesman to perform at the Great Wall of China, attracting an audience of more than 40,000 and earning him the title of “China’s Ambassador of the Blues.”

The release of his 2020 album Rawer Than Raw an all-acoustic effort paying tribute to the rich blues history of Mississippi, earned Rush his second Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. Undoubtedly, Rush has cemented his reputation as one of the last living links to the American blues’ glorious past and an inspiration for its future stars.

RELEASE

“HELP...I’M ALIVE” JUNE

Formed in 2007 by Academy Awardwinning actor Billy Bob Thornton and J.D. Andrew, The Boxmasters have recorded an impressive and diverse catalog of music that touches on their love of a wide array of influences, but most importantly, the rock and roll of the 1960s. Listening to The Boxmasters, one can hear odes to the Beatles, Byrds, and Beach Boys, but also important to The Boxmasters are The Mothers of Invention, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, and Big Star.

Since forming The Boxmasters, several long-time friends have contributed to the sound of the band, but the core of The Boxmasters has always been Andrew and Thornton. As primary songwriters, the sound of the Boxmasters has been an evolution as the duo constantly strives to find new inspiration, new sounds, and new ways of expressing what is in their hearts and on their minds. But at the core,

there is a backbeat, a lyric with meaning and music played with emotion.

During the shutdown of 2020, the avid creators would record their three newest records. A very personal album called Nothing Personal which is yet to be released, Christmas In California which was released in November of 2021, and Help...I’m Alive, which was released in April 2022 on Keentone Records/ Thirty Tigers.

SUMMER MUSICALS

The Music Man is family entertainment at its best, equal parts devilishly witty, romantic, and touching. A six-time Tony Award-winning musical comedy, Meredith Willson’s The Music Man has been thrilling audiences for generations since 1957.

The Music Man observes fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he tricks the citizens of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band that he vows to organize – despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall.

presented with special arrangement from Music Theatre International

from Tony-winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton must protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers. He must also guard an abandoned egg left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!
