⎕ Learn from faculty with extensive biblical and theological training and diverse experience in ministry and leadership. ⎕ Complete your Master of Arts degree at a university with a 75-year history of preparing Christian leaders for service. ⎕ Attend classes with schedules and formats designed to accommodate working ministers and professionals and their families. ⎕ Study with other “cutting edge” leaders and scholars who share your passion for biblical and theological study and ministry.
Our graduate programs are structured to meet the schedules and the learning styles of adults already engaged in ministry and/or careers. We provide structure and accountability, to ensure progress; at the same time we offer flexibility, so people can study at the pace that works best for them. Classes are offered in various formats: Friday evening/all-day Saturday sessions that meet one weekend a month for three months (primarily for the M.A. in Theology and Culture), week-long intensives during the day (primarily for the M.A. in Missional Leadership), and predominantly online (for the Master in Ministry).

Master of Arts in
Theology and Culture (MATC)
The purpose of the Master of Arts in Theology and Culture (MATC) is to enable effective witness and service both within the Christian community and to the larger society. Through exploration of the various influences on contemporary culture and theology, you will come to a better understanding of your own assumptions and those of your faith tradition. The program encourages the development of the necessary understanding and skills for effective engagement with cultural trends, social transformation, and the attendant challenges facing the church. The goal is to develop thinking and practice that is biblically informed and creatively faithful to the historic mission of the Christian faith. You may choose between a “thesis track” and a “comprehensive examination track.” You will develop a distinctive research profile and, by taking the optional Advanced Graduate Studies Track, can prepare for Ph.D. work in biblical and theological studies. Overall objective: The overall objective of the MATC is to immerse graduate students in an integrated, comprehensive arts approach to theological graduate education that draws from the best of theology, philosophy, history, and biblical studies, thus enabling the student to engage in theological and spiritual reflection within a vibrant, Christian community.
Schedule For a full-time student, this program can take as little as two years, with courses scheduled across three annual terms. Most courses are taught in Friday evening/ Saturday intensives once a month over three months. For class listings and calendar, please visit www.northwestu. edu/MATC/

Advanced Graduate Studies Track (12 credits) (Optional) The purpose of the Advanced Graduate Studies Track is twofold. First, students wishing to gain greater depth and breadth through additional studies beyond the required 48 credit hour program will benefit. These courses may include advanced seminars or tutorials that are individually designed in conjunction with departmental faculty, or they may be additional Biblical language courses. In either case, the student will work closely with a mentor/professor to design an individual track that meets the student’s specific area of interest. Second, students planning to pursue advanced studies towards a Ph.D. degree are strongly encouraged to take these additional courses as part of their program of study. This program component must be completed before the thesis stage. Completion of the “Advanced Graduate Studies Track” will increase the credit hour total from 48 to 60.

Master of Arts in
Missional Leadership (MAML)
The purpose of the Master of Arts in Missional Leadership (MAML) is to provide you with a curriculum that develops a theoretical framework for understanding leadership, mission and culture, globalization, ethics, motivation, creativity, vision, strategic planning, teamwork, spirituality, and other leadership issues. This program will emphasize the need for missional leaders to live out the gospel so that it is seen and experienced in community. The coursework will be followed by a culminating project during which you will conduct research or perform an organizational intervention that incorporates the course content from the program. Overall objective: The overall objective of the M.A. in Missional Leadership is to develop a theological and theoretical framework for leadership, mission, and culture that is both academically rigorous and praxis-oriented, and facilitates the growth and development of missional leadership for the twenty-first century church. New Hybrid Format: Certain times of the year are extraordinarily busy for those in ministry, so this program now is offered in a hybrid format, with some classes available online, particularly during the weeks around Christmas and Easter.
Schedule This program can be finished in 24 months, but commonly requires up to 36 months. Students are organized into cohort groups which meet together in week-long intensives, typically 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. from Tuesday through Friday. Master in
Ministry
N OW O N L I N E !
The Master in Ministry is now offered in a predominantly online format. (We do ask you to come to our campus once each year for an orientation and special seminar. Everything else can be done from your laptop!) But “online” doesn’t mean “alone.” We have set up this program to ensure deep interaction with your professors and fellow students. Our ability to offer great classes online is due to the experience we have gained in recent years using the web to enhance many of our regular classes. We use a system called Discovery, so that each class can offer students a variety of resources, including the syllabus, bibliography, exercises, and other resources. Students can upload papers and other assignments online. It’s faster, more convenient, and more environmentally sensitive. It also can help provide a greater sense of community. “There are numerous interactive opportunities available to both our professors and our students in our online classes,” reports Ben Thomas, Director of Extended Education. “Resources include video lectures, class discussions, podcasting, wikis, and more. As a result, our online courses offer many of the capabilities that traditional courses do. For example, students can not only create individual presentations, they also can collaborate and present group projects.” According to Lis Kraus, the Associate Director of Curriculum in the Office of Extended Education, “The goal of every online class in this Master of Ministry program is to provide each student with three strong and rewarding interactions — with the subject material, with the professor, and with the other students.” An online lecture with Dr. Alan Ehler.

Ministry (MIM)
The purpose of the Master in Ministry (MIM) is to give those with a bachelor’s degree in another subject a biblical, theological, and practical ministry foundation so they are able to gain credentials and fulfill a calling to ministry. The MIM seeks to equip Christian leaders to successfully: ⎕ Serve as leaders in a variety of Christian leadership contexts, including local church and para-church ministries. ⎕ Engage in biblical and theological reflection, especially as it relates to one’s ministry context. ⎕ Transition into ministry from a lay background by providing the academic foundation needed to obtain ministerial credentials. ⎕ Establish an academic foundation to pursue further graduate theological training. Overall objective: The overall objective of the Master in Ministry program is to prepare students – intellectually, spiritually, and functionally – for vocational or lay ministry. Reflecting the emphasis of this three-pronged approach, the curriculum is thus academically rigorous, spiritually enriching, and praxis-oriented, in order to holistically prepare men and women to successfully engage in Christian leadership.
Schedule This 30-credit program can be finished in four semesters over 16 months. Classes are organized into cohort groups to ensure community. Course work may be finished at any time each week according to each student’s own schedule and preferences. For class listings and calendar, please visit www.northwestu. edu/MIM/

Our History Northwest University was founded in 1934. It grew from a three-year to a four-year academic curriculum in 1948, and a Liberal Arts division was added in 1955. In 1973 Northwest gained regional academic accreditation. Northwest attained university status on January 1, 2005, at which time the institution’s name was changed from Northwest College to Northwest University. The 45,000-square-foot Donald H. Argue Health and Sciences Center, pictured at right, is the latest addition to the campus (along with the former headquarters of the Seattle Seahawks). Many of the classes in the Master’s Degree programs that are outlined in this publication are held in the Health and Sciences Center.
