A co m m u n i t y o f ___________________. Our community is one of the most consistent reasons why college students from across the globe choose Northwest University as their home away from home for four years. It sounds simple, but there is a lot that goes into creating an authentic and inviting campus culture. Our identity as a university is made up of a number of characteristics: First and foremost, we are a community of faith. Christ remains at the center of the university’s mission, values, and hopes for the future. We are a community of learners, full of deeply passionate individuals with diverse callings, skillsets, and backgrounds. We are a community of confidence, training up students to step into their futures with an ability to not only excel, but to lead. These qualities only scratch the surface of our identity as a community—as a family. But families are not defined just by their characteristics and idiosyncrasies: they are defined by their people. When you choose Northwest University, your contributions have the ability to make a real impact in our community.

We wouldn’t want it any other way.

c r e at o r s As a Christian university, we believe that each person was made in the image of God, the ultimate creator. Viewing the world through this lens provides no shortage of inspiration for our own creativity. Creation in all its forms, including art and technology, is a noble pursuit. In fact, we believe design and creation to be of fundamental importance to the betterment of our community, the church, and the world as a whole. This belief runs so deep that we dedicated an entire suite of programs to different creative careers. These programs are housed in the Creatio Center for Technology, Media, and Design. The students in these programs will shape the future of music, user experience design, videography, computer science, and more.

Deciding on NU was a no-brainer for me. When I toured campus and saw all the equipment that was at our disposal for creating music, I was really impressed and super excited to use it. After the first semester started, I began meeting tons of amazing people, both in my major and not. There were incredibly talented musicians and singers left and right. Living in proximity to all of these artists allowed for some really amazing collaborations and opportunities; these opportunities were few and far between before I came to NU. While creating together, we also grew our friendships simultaneously. I have made some of the best friends I’ve ever had in the last year here at NU, and music definitely helped pave the way for those friendships. Not only have friendships blossomed at Northwest, but so have my abilities as a musician. Being surrounded by great skill and talent pushes you to become better. With the combination of various music theory classes, production courses, and jam sessions with the friends I have made, I would confidently say my musicianship has drastically improved; and that’s all thanks to the amazing community that I interact with every day here at Northwest University.

In these last two years, I have come to recognize Northwest as a community that fosters the natural skills and talents of creatives and further shows them the countless possibilities ahead. When I came to NU, I knew God desired me to concentrate on music, but I didn’t know what specific field in music I should study. I was also intimidated by the number of students who were skilled musicians and recording engineers who seemed much further along than I was. It was an easy thing to fall into the trap of comparison, but one of my professors corrected my definition of success. She said that as a student I shouldn’t aim to be the best, but I should aim to learn what I don’t yet know. Once my mindset shifted from being the best to being a student, I found such freedom which allowed me to collaborate with my peers, to soak up every bit of expertise and knowledge my teachers could provide me, and to simply enjoy this safe space that I have to explore music. I can attest to the fact that no matter your skill level, Northwest is a nurturing environment for musical artists who want to explore and create.

Community at Northwest to me is built on a foundation in Christ, with the fruits of that being strong relationships, fellowship, wisdom, and lots of joy and fun! With the awesome majors Northwest offers, it is easy to find people with similar interests. Specifically with my focus on UX design, it has been super enjoyable and helpful to connect with people with varying skills and passions. For me, I lean to the visual art and video production side of UX, while others may lean more toward the psychology and coding side. These differences will be incredibly helpful when our work becomes more concentrated, and we can lean on each other while creating projects as practice for our future careers. Because the foundation of Northwest’s community is Christ, it is also so great to pool together skills and passions for God’s glory!

A co m m u n i t y o f c r e ato r s.

It’s certainly no mystery that we have an incredibly creative God—after all, the entire biblical story is a masterpiece of design. In fact, the very first verse of the Bible—before we learn anything else about God—highlights creation: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (NIV). At the end of the Bible, Revelation 21:5 says, “I am making everything new!” (NIV). And in between are countless stories that highlight God’s creativity as the great designer of the universe, the world, and a plan for all of humanity. And the fact that we are created in His image means, among other things, that we are born to design and innovate. The faculty of the Creatio Center for Technology, Media, and Design firmly believe that our role is to help students learn to take advantage of the creative talent that God has baked into us. We are a community of individuals with a natural talent for creativity and a love of good design. Our programs provide education and experience in a variety of subject areas including the media arts (audio, video, cinematography, animation, virtual productions) and technology (computer science, data science), with an equal emphasis in programs that combine elements of both—including user experience design, video game design, and more. Our goal is to convene a community of creativity, to leverage the design thinking that has been built into us by God, and to encourage graduates from the Creatio community to become world-changers for the next generation.

learners At NU, being a “learner” isn’t just about doing well in your classes, even though that’s important. We want to see students’ lives changed for the better by the knowledge they gain during their time on campus. This means presenting opportunities to push themselves and providing resources for when they’re struggling. Encouraging an appetite for learning is sometimes referred to as a “learner mindset.” In gaining a learner mindset at NU, graduates will be able to approach their careers with fresh abilities repeatedly as their learning continues throughout their lifetime. For us, learning is more than just a grade: it’s a way of life.

N A M E : Grace Seyoum Y E A R : Junior M A J O R : English and Political Science Double Major H O M E T O W N : Seattle, Washington

The honors program, debate team, and friendships with students and faculty at NU truly challenge me to grow academically. There is never a shortage of moments I am called to rise to the occasion, whether in deep conversations, rigorous courses, or intercollegiate debate tournaments. At times, the growth that I see in myself as a result is dramatic, and other times it is when I look back at all that NU has provided me with that I realize the difference it has made in me. Journeying with the bright and ambitious students of the honors program and in and out of class motivates me to challenge myself. The joy of getting to know my cohort has added immeasurably to my life, and truly left an indelible mark on my soul. One thing I cherish about them, and NU generally, is they do not worship the mind. Indeed, for everyone I have met, the pursuit of learning and knowledge is recognized as stewardship—a way to honor the Lord and love others. Learning how to submit every academic pursuit to God is truly an intentional practice I am still learning to walk in alongside the people of NU.

As someone who has worked extensively with the annual selection of President’s Scholars and the formation of the NU Honors Program, I can attest that we have diligently sought to attract bright, high-achieving students to our campus. The old adage is true: “A rising tide floats all boats.” The fact that we have 44 Honors Program participants at all undergraduate levels and multiple majors means these intelligent, motivated young adults are investing in class discussions in all of their courses. Moreover, the faculty who design and conduct our eight Honors courses ensure that their curriculum does not merely tack on additional “busy work” to standard classes; instead, these seminar-style, discussion-based classes help Honors students learn in innovative, collaborative ways that enrich their intellectual curiosity.

e x p lo r e r s What’s so important about place? Where you’re from, where you are now, where you’ve been: all these places have a part in shaping who you are. Colleges are no exception. At Northwest University, we are deeply inspired by our location in the great Pacific Northwest. There is a pure, unfiltered beauty almost everywhere you look. Just down the road, students enjoy paddleboarding and lake jumps at Lake Washington. And from the top of the hill on campus, you can see the Olympic Mountain Range in the distance. The wonders of God’s creation are all around us, and they provide infinite opportunity for adventure and connection with fellow explorers.

Living in Central Washington my whole life, there were no shortages of outdoor activities. From river rafting, mountain biking, boating, paddleboarding, and snowboarding, to cliff jumping, swimming, hiking, and exploring, the Wenatchee Valley had it all. But moving to Kirkland allowed me to experience all these things in a new light thanks to the wonderful community of friends here. Loving the outdoors created my passion for photography and keeps me exploring the outdoors as much as I possibly can. While at NU I was blessed with so many adventures and was able to capture some of them through the lens of my camera. I have a deep connection to these places now, and when I think back on them or look at a picture I took, I am able to remember the memories I made with some of my closest friends. Being able to go out and explore these wondrous places has also given me a realization about our planet. God told us that we need to be stewards of the land He has given us. We need to protect this beautiful Earth. Being here at Northwest has allowed me to capitalize on everything regarding the outdoors, and for that I couldn’t be more grateful.

When I think about NU, the word community inevitably comes to mind. I have such a strong sense of belonging and connection at Northwest. Part of this comes from the experiences I have had since being here. Ever since I was young, I have loved exploring the outdoors—climbing, mountain biking, hiking—and it has been no different since coming to Northwest. The Pacific Northwest is such a breathtaking place, and one thing that makes it even better is the people I have gotten to explore it with. I have been blessed with friends who have similar interests and share the same passion for God’s creation that I have. There is always something more to see or experience out in nature, and with the community around me being just as passionate about diving into it, lifelong friendships and stories are being made.

i n n o vat i o n As breathtaking as our surroundings are, the inspiration doesn’t stop there. Our campus in Kirkland, Washington, is almost perfectly centered in one of the world’s largest hubs for tech companies. Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and countless innovative startups round out the greater Seattle area’s economic landscape. Through internships and the Career Readiness Initiative (see page 20), our ambitious students take advantage of their close proximity every chance they get.

My education at NU has shown me that it is not only possible for the teachings of Jesus to maintain relevance in the business world but that following His teachings and counsel gives common businesspeople uncommon footing and stability. More than helping develop my understanding of good business, being at NU has introduced me to professors and peers that put theory and theology into practice in their everyday endeavors. Seeing such godly ambition and creativity has encouraged and inspired me to pursue business in a way that deepens my relationship with God and my community. Because of NU’s dedication to robust education with an emphasis on spiritual vitality, I feel prepared to enter the business world with a clear vision of how to be a representative of Christ in whatever industry I decide to tackle.

The College of Business is committed to developing Christian business leaders who will bring extraordinary value to the workplace. With this vision in mind, our mission is to engage students in faithintegrated learning that develops their character, competence, and skills. We believe these values serve as a catalyst for innovation and set the foundation for business students to serve and thrive in our community and beyond.

Fa i t h Our faith in Christ remains at the very core of this community’s identity. Jesus is our source of hope and our inspiration for everything we implement on campus, from community events to new programs. Students have opportunities to worship together corporately in our chapel multiple times a week, but spiritual formation takes place all across campus: in prayers from professors before class, in student-led life groups, and in honest conversations between friends. When our graduates bring their freshly honed skills into their careers, our hope is that they start their first day with a deeper knowledge of God and His love for them than ever before.

The community at NU has been one of the most important parts of my college experience. Being in the ministry program is a special opportunity because it’s a collective of the future leaders of the Church, and it’s so cool to get to know each other before we go out to pursue our callings. On top of the encouragement and motivation that I find from my fellow students, I am pushed forward academically and theologically through the curriculum. Taking Bible and theology classes has helped me get a better grasp on how to interpret the Bible and lead God’s people accurately. The leadership at NU has also been great at allowing ministry students to speak in chapel, giving them speaking experience and helping them minister to their peers in another way. I’ve been blessed to be involved with and lead Lighthouse, a club on campus that ministers to and helps the unhoused community in our area. It has opened my eyes to what Jesus has to say about loving the poor, and it has encouraged me to learn about sustainable ways to help the poor in the long term. I am also a part of a club for women in ministry that gives me a community to talk to other women facing the same struggles as me. There we connect with women in different leadership roles in the church as we also network with each other. Additionally, through the ministry program, I have been able to get an internship to minister to unchurched people in our area. Through connections I made getting my ministry license through the Assemblies of God while in school as encouraged by the College of Ministry, I am connected with a local church plant where I am currently serving. God has blessed and directed me so much through the ministry program at Northwest University, and I am so proud of what they are doing!

The greatest attribute of NU is that we are a community committed to following Jesus. In your time here, you will find that our passion to follow Jesus is not a cliché or something good to tweet. All of us—students, faculty, and staff—are deeply invested in one another’s spiritual lives. So, we invite you to join us and help make NU a spiritually vibrant community.

care Each person that steps onto our campus is complex; they are more than just goals and a class schedule. There is a world of intricate details that makes each student who they are. At Northwest University, we want to engage the whole student: their dreams, their background, their fears, and their hopes. Our faculty, staff, and student leaders are committed to exploring every opportunity for students to be themselves at NU. Through clubs, life groups, events, and even casual conversations, ours is a community that cares deeply about each individual.

N A M E : Ciara dela Cuesta Y E A R : Senior M A J O R : Cultural Psychology/Counseling Psychology H O M E T O W N : Monroe, Washington

Community means both feeling and being supported by the people around you. Growing up, I struggled with understanding who I was and where I came from; I felt unsupported. It was hard enough not understanding my personal culture, but not feeling supported or encouraged to figure it out provoked me to feel lost in the chaos of it all. After attending a “Courageous Conversations” session on campus, where students discussed the topic on why cultural identity is important to an individual, I felt like I was not alone in how I was feeling. I received a lot of support from my peers through the process of discovering who I am and what I am called to do. The process was not easy, but because of resources on campus that encourage students to become one in community through discussing difficult topics on cultural identity, mental health, and allyship, I was able to find support to continue understanding who I am and how it impacts my passion for people. Through this journey of self-discovery, I learned that I wanted to show support to all college students struggling with who they are in Christ, how their culture impacts them, and with feeling alone. I want to support other colleges students in ways that I received from my community these last three years. I want to make others feel loved and wanted, rather than hopeless and confused. As one leader of the student-led multicultural organization, MOSAIC, I strive to build a community for those who do not feel like they understand who they are. As a community, we should support one another and encourage each other to keep going even through the difficult process of self-discovery.

Coming in as a freshman, I was on the men’s basketball team for the first semester. While that was a great experience, I limited my community to the basketball team. Because of that, I didn’t feel like I belonged elsewhere on campus and had difficulty participating in the greater NU community. That was until leaders of the community started reaching out to me. I then began to make it a priority to go beyond my comfort zone in order to get the most out of my experience. I started to get more involved in things such as the Black Student Fellowship and MOSAIC to grow and learn about other cultures within our community. In doing this, I started really seeing the truth of the phrase “you get out what you put in.” Now I’m in my second year of leadership on campus because I want to be the community to others that my leaders were to me.

confidence The first day of anything is almost always nerve-wracking. From the first day of school to the first day of a new job, starting something brand new can be intimidating. For graduates, the road to a first day of work can be a challenge in and of itself; communicating to potential employers the knowledge and skills you just gained during your time at college isn’t always as straightforward as it sounds. This is why we launched the Career Readiness Initiative. Our new and improved curriculum tracks your skill-building process through measurable competency groups, which you can add to your resumé after you graduate. This means that you’ll be handing your dream employer more than just a piece of paper with a degree title on it; you’ll be able to show them all the amazing ways that you can make their company better.

NU really gave me a solid foundation for nursing knowledge, including things like pharmacology and medical surgical pathophysiology. NU also gave me leadership training, as well as management and clinical training. But I think what really prepared me for what I’m doing today is the cross-cultural experience that allowed me to think outside the hospital and outside the United States, and to see nursing globally.

Ashley Ott Class of 2005

Now that I work at Microsoft, in everything that I do, I put people first. When I do interviews, I want to learn about the person as a whole. I think, “How can I help you? How can I advocate for you better?” Being at NU really teaches you how you can learn people’s stories. You really have to look at the person as a whole.

Petrice Bokako Class of 2018

NU helped me discover opportunities in the entertainment industry I didn’t realize existed. I went to the school thinking I was going to be a studio engineer but discovered quickly that I enjoyed live work more than studio work. Through an opportunity to go to a gig with our live music professor, I was able to see what the life of live audio was like. NU also gave me the opportunity to learn how to network and expand my capabilities in the workplace.
