In his award winning book, The Element, Sir Kenneth Robinson writes about the unique talents and passions inherent in every individual. Robinson calls on schools to challenge themselves to both nurture creativity and create opportunities and experiences that uncover what he refers to as the “element” that each individual possesses. Dr. Robert Brooks devised the term “Islands of Competence,” which he describes as a metaphor for the unique strengths individuals have. He believes if we can find and reinforce these areas of strength, a “ripple effect” is essentially created. Once an individual experiences success, a confidence develops that allows him or her to be more willing to confront situations that have been historically more challenging. According to Dr. Brooks, “Doing something well provides a foundation for doing other things well.”

At NYA, we strive to provide a range of activities in which competence and interests can be discovered. We maintain that every student here has their own innate passion. The goal of the faculty and administration is to create an environment that allows our students to try new experiences and discover talents they never realized they had. Many opportunities are already embedded in the curriculum through the Academy’s emphasis on the academics, arts, athletics, and experiential learning. Opportunities are also fostered through the support of students’ interests that fall outside the regular school program.

These opportunities have included: • Recording original music with the assistance of resources in the Innovation Lab; • Supporting AP art students as they promote and install their annual art show in surrounding communities; • Music students organizing and promoting shows at local music venues; • Mentoring independent studies on topics like The Nature of Comedy, Broadcast Meteorology, Brain Science, Sports Medicine, Nutrition, and The Nature of the Fiddle; • Facilitating student advancement to district, state, and national music festivals; • Middle and Upper School leadership opportunities and wilderness experiences through the Kauffmann Program in Environmental Writing and Wilderness Exploration; • The opportunity to participate in, and in many cases excel at, athletic endeavors.

Building the Kauffmann Program in Environmental Writing and Wilderness Exploration

The Kauffmann Program in Environmental Writing and Wilderness Exploration enters its second year at NYA with a rock solid foundation. The support from the community and success at the 2017 Soirée has enabled NYA to make serious strides to educate students and the community about environmental issues.

Two years ago, after leading seven students from his environmental writing class on a semester-ending Alaskan adventure, Ian Ramsey, NYA visual and performing arts chair, outlined his vision for the Kauffmann Program. The program is named for NYA trustee, friend, and neighbor, John Kauffmann, whose conservation efforts saw the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act and establishment of the Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. The program is intended to create opportunities for NYA students, high school students across Maine, and the larger community; to acknowledge the importance of wilderness conservation and environmental issues through environmental thinking, writing, and wilderness travel. This holds true to NYA’s mission to “develop concern for the larger community and appreciation for the natural environment.” Ramsey set forth four pillars of the program: (1) the bi-annual environmental writing class with a backcountry trip to Alaska, (2) the John Kauffmann Prize for writing, (3) a summer writing workshop, and (4) a lecture series.

The NYA community accepted this idea, and in less than a year it has grown in spades thanks to many generous donors.

The annual Soirée on Thompson’s Point successfully raised funds to give the Kauffmann Program a monumental boost. NYA now owns a fleet of kayaks, and a climbing wall is under construction—both made possible by the proceeds raised that night. The kayaks allow NYA students and faculty to take advantage of the Maine coast and have already been used for a variety of outdoor and academic endeavors. In late September, all ninth and tenth graders sea kayaked off Littlejohn Island in Casco Bay as part of an intertidal zone research project with science teacher Andrea Lauerman. “We were able to closely examine the marine ecosystem, specifically the ecology of the intertidal zone,” said Lauerman. “Using the kayaks allowed us to access new and exciting research locations and to connect science with something that the students enjoy doing outside of class. Maybe next time they are out on a boat or at the beach they will think about something they learned in biology—and that’s a win for me!”

Last April, NYA hosted the prize ceremony and reading for the first annual statewide Kauffmann Environmental Writing Prize. Entries were 1,500-word nonfiction essays about any environmentally-related topic, including nature, environmental activism, science, personal memoir, or simply good storytelling with an ecological theme. All Maine high school students were eligible to enter to win cash prizes and a merit scholarship to NYA. The participants included two NYA students and students from four different Maine counties.

Last year, author and adventurer Jon Turk, who literally wrote the book, Environmental Science spoke about Science, his 1,485 mile, 104-day expedition around Ellesmere Island in the high Arctic. His journey was named in the “Top 10 Expeditions of the Year”

by National Geographic, and “Expedition of the Year” by Canoe & Kayak Magazine. Also last year, NYA alumnus Jeffrey McCarthy ’83 delivered a presentation entitled, “Using Alpine Adventure as a Path to Environmental Consciousness.” McCarthy is currently the director of the environmental humanities graduate program at the University of Utah (see page 23). Later in the spring, nationally-recognized environmental authors Sean Prentiss and Brooke Williams visited NYA, gave readings, and worked with students on their own writing.

At the end of June, Ramsey returned to Glacier Bay, Alaska with the second environmental writing class.

They spent two weeks kayaking in the backcountry and visiting with authors Kim Heacox and Hank Lentfer, whose words brought them there. Enabling participants to experience the wild in a way that resonates within them is what the Kauffmann Program ultimately strives for. Parker Elkins ’18 was one of the travelers who had his eyes and heart opened by full immersion into nature’s wonder, “It’s so extremely different from our day-to-day lives, that I think everyone should, at one point, experience the primal reality of being there,” reflects Elkins. “In Alaska, the only things that mattered were: Is there food for the day? Is there shelter for the night? It’s an incredibly primal experience, in the most beautiful place on the earth. Alaska itself, and Glacier Bay National Park specifically, is to me a land of this strange duality—where everything seems both ancient and newborn; where every day seems to last forever but the two-week long trip only seemed a few short minutes.

There are very few things that I wouldn’t give up to go back and spend more time there. Alaska actually has made me strongly consider pursuing a career with the National Park Service, or working with the park service in some form.”

NYA hosted the first-ever Kauffmann Summer Environmental Writing Seminar in July, with eleven students from nine different high schools around Maine.

As part of the writing workshop, students honed and critiqued their writing and paddled out into Casco Bay for an island overnight, enveloping their senses in all the Maine coast could deliver. All necessary equipment and food were provided to students through the Kauffmann Program.

August saw the return of the NYA Leadership Academy.

Ten Middle School students traversed New Hampshire’s Presidential Range, led by Ramsey and Danielle Barschdorf, NYA science department chair. Over the course of the trip, the kids worked on navigation, first aid, and character building. Most of the focus was on leadership, and each student had the chance to lead the group. More and more responsibilities were ceded to the young hikers each day.

On the last day, they were completely responsible for selforganization and leadership. Ramsey and Barschdorf had one-on-one feedback sessions with students at the end of the trip, where they shared what they observed from the students and helped them create an action plan of how to implement these lessons during the school year. “There’s something about being in the woods and hiking all day that allows people to look at themselves and their view on the world a little differently,” said Barschdorf. “Students are able to find new areas of strength that they didn’t know they had. I love to be a part of that discovery and journey.

It’s also so much fun to step away from technology and revel in nature.”

The Kauffmann Program had a busy start to the 2017-18 school year. In addition to Lauerman’s Casco Bay intertidal research and guest lectures, Ramsey is continuing to host the “Wild Soul Words Film Series,” featuring films about nature, adventure, and spirituality. This fall, he added the monthly “Wild Soul Words Book Group” and monthly guided mindfulness sessions. All of these events are open to the NYA community and larger community. In November, the outdoor climbing wall will be constructed in the gym, and the NYA outing club will take an overnight camping trip in the mountains of New Hampshire.

Going forward, NYA will continue to sponsor the Kauffmann Environmental Writing Prize, the Kauffmann Summer Environmental Writing Seminar, and the annual Kauffmann Speaker. Additionally, a range of environmental writers and speakers will visit campus, and experiential learning will be woven into the curriculum in a natural and authentic way. In 2018, Ramsey plans to add a Diploma with Distinction program in Outdoor/Environmental Leadership and create an international two-week NYA program in the Peruvian Andes that will combine ecology, adventure, and global culture.

TO EMPOWER How NYA has given three students the support to take their passion to the next level NYA Middle School science teacher Danielle Barschdorf had a student once who asked to go back to the Royal River to conduct additional experiments. She took the student and a classmate during a free period, and these students, and their entire class, took the study a few steps further. “The entire class benefited from this one student’s curiosity. It’s why I love it here. If we have students with a particular interest, we can try to give them the tools they need to take it to the next level.” The tools may be just that — tools, like a green screen, a robot, or a canvas — or they may simply be inspiration, opportunity, and acceptance.

Jack Sillin is fascinated by the weather. When he was in seventh grade, his dad, NYA history department chair Peter Sillin, encouraged him to set up a Twitter account, and “Forecaster Jack” was born. His Twitter feed began to attract attention, eventually enabling him to make connections with professional forecasters. Before he knew it, he was speaking with The Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore, National Weather Service staffers, NECN meteorologist Tim Kelley, and CEO of The Weather Channel, David Clark, who invited him to tour the station in Atlanta.

Last year, Jack did an independent study in broadcast meteorology in NYA’s Innovation Lab with information technology director, Christopher Mazzurco. There, he developed the tools he needed to do television-quality weather forecasts.

“It was awesome. I learned how to design all the graphics and present in front of the green screen,” he said.

“The second semester I did a deep dive into some of the math behind meteorology with [math department chair] Mr. Austin. He was great.

We’d go through quasi-geostrophic theory and isotropic analysis, all these things that he could explain the math behind in a way that I could understand,” Jack said.

This year, he is taking online meteorology courses that have been developed by college professors.

Austin explains, “In his ongoing pursuit to better understand such concepts of synoptic meteorology, Jack absolutely relishes his independent work at NYA, knowing that this education improves his own ability to model, forecast, and clearly articulate what is happening in the skies above us each day.”

Sillin is currently juggling school, sports, Forecaster Jack, and a job at Weather OK, where he is in charge of promoting the company’s forecasting products. He landed the job because the owner saw his green screen forecast on Twitter, and he was recommended by NECN’s Kelley. He credits NYA with teaching him writing and communication skills. “From a science perspective, the skills I learned in the lab, data analysis, and scientific writing are skills I’ve been able to apply to the weather,” explained Sillin.

An avid hiker, Jack recently climbed Mt. Washington on a trip organized by his advisor, Ian Ramsey, and met with the staff at the Mt. Washington Observatory. When asked if he has free time, Jack responds, “Sometimes. When we have a big ridge of high pressure over the entire U.S.” He plans to attend college for meteorology next fall.

Anyone who has attended an all-school Friday Forum over the past four years probably knows Justin Guo as the enthusiastic cross country runner who makes entertaining announcements about upcoming meets. Guo, who is from China, is also an opera singer and an actor in musical theater. He didn’t come to NYA as either of those, however. Guo’s parents, both singers themselves, discouraged him from singing. “They told me I was off tune,” he said.

“I was never brave enough to sing in China.” In his freshmen year at NYA, Justin attended the Mid-Autumn Festival on campus where participants sang a Chinese song. “A couple of my fellow students and some of my teachers encouraged me to join the choir,” he said. “I don’t think they were being totally serious, but I did.” That was just the beginning. He spent a lot of time with NYA vocal music and theater teacher Nora Krainis, who encouraged his singing and urged him to try musical theater. He landed a few side roles in “Annie” that year. “Justin is passionate, friendly, inquisitive, determined, and has a great sense of humor, which helps him succeed in his music and theatre endeavors,” said Krainis. He has since attended Districts, States, and All-Eastern music festivals; and was invited to participate in the Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall his sophomore year. “That boosted my confidence,” he explained. As a sophomore, he played the role of Gomez in “The Addams Family,” and last year, he was Horton in “Seussical.” He hopes to land a role in this winter’s production of “Beauty and the Beast.”

Aside from music and theater, Justin enjoys reading, and he is a member of the golf team. He takes opera lessons both in Portland and in China.

He considers singing a lifelong hobby and would like to continue to sing in college where he plans to study history or sociology.

Charlotte Collins ’18 blends her love of art with her passion for science.

To me, science is a creative adventure, and being able to incorporate my artwork with my interest in science expands my mind and creates a bridge between the two.

Senior Charlotte Collins is passionate about science. She spent last summer at the MDI Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor as a research fellow. She is also an accomplished artist. At NYA, art and science happily coexist, and Collins is a good example. She is working on a series of drawings for AP studio art that combine her love of science and art by approaching science from a new perspective. Her project is about discovery, and as in science, each of her pieces examines a particular part of one landscape in the set.

“By honing in to a single aspect of a piece, I discover more about that landscape and the science behind every broad, zoomed out image,” she explains. Upper School studio art teacher Colby Myer said, “Charlotte’s AP concentration does a wonderful job of highlighting the complex curiosities of the modern American teenager.”

For Collins, who grew up in Woolwich, this is an opportunity to fully explore the world around her, specifically the wonders of the Maine coast. “Through art, I am able to investigate parts of the Maine coast and the human body in a crucially different way than I do in a lab. To me, science is a creative adventure, and being able to incorporate my artwork with my interest in science expands my mind and creates a bridge between the two,” she said.

Collins looks forward to a future as a scientist. “While I may not be able to make art as I forge ahead as a scientist, I still feel as if the artist in me allows me to understand the science just a little better. I can look at a landscape, a person, or a challenge and comprehend more about it than what is visible at the surface, and to me, that is the most important thing,” she explained.

What the three of these students demonstrate is how the culture at NYA enables them to dig deeper into a particular subject, take a risk and try something new, or combine two subjects that don’t seem to go together.

The teachers at NYA encourage students to explore their interests and are always willing to go that extra mile to support these pursuits.

NYA Students Recognized as National Merit Semifinalists

Two of NYA’s current seniors were recently selected as National Merit Semifinalists, a distinction granted to those students who score among the very best in the nation on the PSAT examination. Head of School Ben Jackson presented these awards earlier this fall during an all-school Friday Forum to seniors Rick Hilscher and Leo Webster.

Both Rick and Leo will be notified by the NMSC in February if they are to become Finalists in the 63rd Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of the 1.6 million juniors who took the PSAT last fall. Approximately half of the 15,000 students selected as Finalists will be given the Merit Scholar title. Congratulations and good luck to Rick and Leo!

NYA Pilots Bring Your Own Device Program This year, NYA is piloting a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program for eighth and tenth graders. BYOD allows students to utilize their own devices (laptops, iPads, etc.) for school work and teachers to incorporate new software into their lesson plans. Many teachers are taking advantage of the applications to help organize notetaking, distribute resources, evaluate comprehension, and collect homework.

Devices will further support utilization of a new suite of organizational and collaborative software for students. In the Middle School, math teacher Nate Smith’s algebra and geometry classes access Khan Academy to practice problems without having to relocate to the computer lab. Using Microsoft One Note, his students can upload a picture of their homework for all to see so the class can collectively learn from each others’ mistakes and successes. Math teacher Reggie Hackleman’s sophomores are accessing online graphing calculators to see visual representations of problems. History teacher Peter Sillin administers short quizzes with instant feedback so he can immediately see if his students understood their homework or the previous day’s lesson. He also has his students research current events and evaluate the reliability of online sources. Sillin’s students have the option to write answers to questions with the notebook software before turning to class discussion. These smaller assignments become building blocks in a writing portfolio the students can refer back to for longer essays.

Overall, the BYOD initiative is increasing instructional time, boosting productivity for teachers and students, and providing a greater variety of tools to help meet a wide range of learning styles. NYA will expand the program for all Middle and Upper School grades next fall.

Mr. McMahon Celebrates 50 Years of Teaching “The aspect of teaching that I enjoy the most is change. No two kids are alike, few classes are ever the same, and the talents kids bring to school are often amazing,” reflected NYA Middle School English teacher Jack McMahon, on his golden anniversary of teaching.

Fifty years is a milestone seldom reached in any profession and almost unheard of for educators. “Mr. McMahon has served in nearly every capacity from teacher to coach to administrator during his tenure at NYA,” praised NYA Head of School Ben Jackson. “Fifty years in education is a remarkable accomplishment, and the commitment he has made to countless students and families is truly special. The Academy is a far better place for his contributions over the years.”

Thirty-four of those 50 years have been on NYA’s campus as a well-liked and respected member of the faculty. McMahon has taught Upper School English, a mixed class of Upper and Middle School English, and for the past fifteen years, Middle School English.

He was the assistant Head of School for five years in the late eighties and early nineties and head of the English department for ten years along the way. Outside of the classroom, he coached on the athletic fields and in the rink as assistant varsity and junior varsity ice hockey coach, assistant baseball and softball coach, junior varsity soccer coach, and Middle School girls soccer coach.

During a career spanning five decades McMahon has learned as much as he has taught, “I always must be prepared to change plans, never underestimate kids’ ingenuity, and probably most important to me is that reading is the key to success and happiness.”

NYA Partners with Hybrid Learning Consortium Upper School students now have the opportunity to further dictate their educational path because NYA is part of the Hybrid Learning Consortium (HLC), which provides online learning to member schools. The HLC is a collective of independent schools around the world whose faculty develop and teach a wider variety of rigorous course offerings in the independent school tradition. Seven NYA students are currently enrolled, taking Chinese II, AP Spanish, AP psychology, globalization, and graphic design. All courses have a maximum class size of 17 students who interact with their teachers and other students via technology. The HLC will help alleviate schedule conflicts and enable students to take classes that are not currently offered at the Academy.

NYA faculty will also teach online courses as part of the HLC. NYA is the only member school in Northern New England.

This spring, NYA’s Innovation Lab sponsored the first annual NYA Student Short Film Competition open to all Middle and Upper School students. Students were encouraged to utilize the audio/visual equipment and any other resources in the lab. There was just one “must.” Each entry was required to use green screen technology. “It was exciting to see the Innovation Lab abuzz with activity as the film groups moved through the steps of planning, filming, recording audio, and editing,” said Dave Gagne, NYA technology coordinator and history teacher.

Workshops by visiting industry professionals were held earlier in the spring to help the filmmakers to become proficient in the production process.

All final films were judged on four specific criteria: 1) Storytelling: quality script, ideas, and ability to tell a story; 2) Technical Production: camera, sound, lighting, and editing; 3) Green Screen: execution in using green screen technology; and 4) Overall Impression: entertainment value, creativity, acting, and effect on the audience In the Middle School division, Caleb King ’24, Eben Weislogel ’24, Tiger DiMillo ’22, and Finlay Gepfert ’24 won for “Star Wars – Attack on the Ewok Village.”

Ian Ramsey 2017 Grammy Nominee Visual and performing arts chair Ian Ramsey was chosen as a quarterfinalist for the 2017 Music Educator Award presented by The Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation. 3,300 nominated educators were submitted from all 50 states. Ramsey was one of the 290 music teachers announced as quarterfinalists, and one of only two from Maine.

“I’m excited and honored to be recognized by the Grammy Foundation as a national quarterfinalist for the 2017 Music Educator Award. In a world where there are so many great and inspiring music teachers, I feel lucky, and humbled, to be part of this process,” said Ramsey.

Ian’s contributions to NYA are many. In addition to chairing the arts department, he teaches a variety of music classes, including: music theory, wind ensemble, bluegrass ensemble, steel band, and jazz band. In 2013, he co-founded the Maine Acoustic Festival, the first statewide auditioned student roots music festival in America. In 2016, he created NYA’s Diploma with Distinction in Music: Performance, Entrepreneurship and Community. Most recently, he built the Kauffmann Program in Environmental Writing and Wilderness Exploration which seeks to educate students and the larger community about the importance of wilderness and nature (see page 3).

Monuments of Peace NYA celebrated the International Day of Peace on September 21 with a special assembly recognizing the installation of Peace Poles around campus.

“Seussical” the Musical In February, the mischievous Cat in the Hat led the way through a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! “Seussical” the musical, presented by NYA drama, brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, and the Whos of Whoville!

The production featured Rick Hilscher ’18 (The Cat), Madeleine Vaillancourt ’22 (Jojo), Justin Guo ’18 (Horton), Elizabeth Gagnon ’20 (Gertrude), Suzanna Butterfield ’17 (Mayzie), Kara Jensen ’18 (Sour Kangaroo), Daniel Edgerton-Dickey ’17 (General Schmitz), Camilla Rosenfeld ’17 (Mrs. Mayor), and Spencer Barton ’20 (Mr. Mayor), in addition to an ensemble cast of players. “‘Seussical’ is one of my all-time favorite shows due to the many opportunities for characters to shine, and the message “A person’s a person, no matter how small!,” said director Nora Krainis.

The Lower School sweetened up the stage with “Wonka Kids!” based on the Roald Dahl classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Brayden Kloza ’26 played the title role of famous Candyman Willie Wonka; Genevieve Vaillancourt ’25 found her golden ticket as Charlie Bucket. Henry Jackson ’26 tuned in Mike Teavee. Emily Minkler ’26 played Violet Beauregarde. Emma Craft ’25 as the spoiled Veruca Salt, and Nathanael Wayashe ’26 as Augustus Gloop rounded out the leads.

The ensemble cast of Oompa Loompas was the cherry on top. “The students continue to amaze me with what they can create over two short months,” said director Linda Vaillancourt.

Mrs. Buehner’s fifth grade class brought the Peanuts characters to life in the black box theatre with their production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” The 3⁄4-thrust playing area brought the characters as close as possible to the audience and made for a more intimate experience overall. Starring roles were Caleb King ’24 as Charlie Brown, Haley Hegarty ’24 as Peppermint Patty, Lila Coleman ’24 as Sally Brown, Sasha Schutz ’24 as Lucy, Nate Oney ’24 as Linus, and Eben Weislogel ’24 as Snoopy.

A Peace Pole is a handcrafted monument that displays the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in different languages on each of its four sides. NYA’s eight peace poles were elaborately decorated by students from all divisions. First and second grade teacher Shannon Gallagher and fourth grade teacher Ellen Gagne brought the idea to campus after they stumbled upon a few while traveling through Oregon in the summer of 2016. The project came to life with the help of Upper School art teacher Colby Myer, Middle School art teacher Tim McMahon ’93, Lower School art teacher Christa Mecham, and a multitude of NYA students from toddlers to twelfth graders.

The goal of the Peace Pole project is not only to create a visual reminder to think, speak, and act in the spirit of peace, but to build community and school spirit through a cooperative activity.

Panthers don’t quit

In late February, the boys basketball team returned to their first Class C semifinal match-up game in just over a decade. Not since 2006 had the Panthers ventured this deep into the post season, and it was not without high drama on the hardwood. The #4 seeded NYA Panthers and #5 Hall-Dale Bulldogs put their matching 13-5 records on the line at the Augusta Civic Center.

Pavel Navrat named head coach of the NYA girls varsity ice hockey team Navrat, originally from the Czech Republic, came to America in the early 90’s to play at Westminster School in CT. He went on to play at the University of Vermont, participating in the Frozen Four in 1996.

He served as manager and NHL agent to UVM teammate Tim Thomas. He is currently director of Navrat Performance, training hockey players worldwide. “I am excited to be part of NYA with its dedication to community, leadership, teamwork, and individual growth. We are all committed to growing the girls hockey program, and I look forward to working with the team to bring out the best in each studentathlete,” said Navrat. NYA Athletic Director, Jack Hardy, shared, “In learning about Coach Navrat, I found he has a wonderful reputation and tremendous respect from the student-athletes and families he works with. The girls are fortunate he is available to bring his experiences and knowledge to the program.”

A strong 5-0 start by the Panthers was soon subdued by the hot-handed Bulldogs’ 20-4 run of the gym. With 3:00 left in the half, Hall-Dale had built an assumingly insurmountable 18-point lead. The deficit was cut to 12 at the half, and NYA had some reassessing to do. NYA Coach Jason Knight and his team adjusted the defense to a three-quarter court pressure, trapping more at half court, and did not quit. The NYA faithful and Studio Band kept the energy level stoked through the second half and saw the Panthers go on a 5:49 9-0 surge late in the fourth quarter. Haven Cutko ’17 fed Jake Malcom ’17 who sank a 3 to take a 56-55 lead with 27.8 seconds left to play. A final of 59-55 sealed the Panthers’ victory and a berth to the Semis. Malcom scored 25 points and had 7 rebounds. Newcomer freshman Te’Andre King ’21 posted 22 points and 13 rebounds in a game that will not soon be forgotten on campus. A week later Coach Knight was named 2017 Class C South Coach of the Year by the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches.

NYA hockey teams help make wishes come true

KEEN STRONG

While mom and dad went shopping for great Black Friday deals, over 20 local kids laced ’em up for the afternoon with the NYA boys and girls hockey teams to raise money for a great cause. The North Yarmouth Academy Make-A-Wish Club organized the coed Black (and Orange) Friday Hockey Clinic at Travis Roy Ice Arena on Friday, November 25. The clinic was open to skaters of all skill levels, ages 8–13. From noon to 2:00 p.m., members of NYA boys and girls varsity ice hockey teams taught the kids some of the finer points of the game, such as stick handling, skating, and situational skills that would give them the extra edge in their youth leagues. Refreshments were served after the skate with NYA boys varsity coach Tyler Walsh. Participants paid $50 each, and the event raised over $1,000 for MakeA-Wish Maine. 100% of the proceeds went to the Maine Chapter of Make-AWish which was established in 1992 and has granted more than 1,300 wishes for Maine children with life-threatening medical conditions.

In April 2016, boys varsity soccer coach Martyn Keen delivered news to the community that no one should ever have to give. He had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. In and out of hospitals for uncomfortable but necessary chemotherapy treatments kept Keen away from the sport he loved.

Coach Keen stepped down from his coaching position, but not out as fervent spectator. “I have managed to make it to every game, bar two, so the boys certainly know where my heart is!” said Keen. He proved that cancer couldn’t keep him from supporting the team, so it didn’t keep the team from supporting Keen. The team had “Keen Strong” warm-up jerseys made which they wore at every game to let their coach know he was still on the sidelines with them.

“It was important for us to show that we are thinking about Martyn and supporting him even as he’s not with the team currently,” said team co-captain Xander Bartone ’17. “We know that there’s nowhere he’d

“I’ve learned that many, many people care about me,” said Keen of the jerseys. “I must have touched some lives along my journey.

The fact that these boys took it upon themselves to make the Keen Strong shirts delighted but not surprised me!! This school and the families who support this institution are just wonderful!!!”

Martyn Keen’s pathology results came back at the end of September 2016 with no sign of cancer in his body. So when weather postponed a playoff game to a date Coach Thorley was unable to attend, Martyn gladly returned to the Panthers’ sideline for one more time with his seniors.

FACULTY PROFILE While working with her grandmother in the garden as a child, Jen Elkins never imagined she would one day end up teaching kids the art of gardening. Her passion is finding expression at NYA in a variety of beneficial ways.

Last fall, after growing weary of watching food waste end up in the trash, Elkins received a grant to purchase equipment to teach students about composting using worms, and started a Lower School garden club to bring life back to the NYA greenhouse. “There’s nothing sweeter than the sound of excited children gathering their apple cores and banana peels to feed the worms,” said Elkins.

One kindergartner agreed, “I really love Miss Jen’s worms.

The worms are my favorite!” Students also learned about basic plant care and pollination. “I wanted to give kids a chance to slow down and do something different from the technology they’re hooked on,” explained Elkins.

Lead primary teacher Monique Roy Whitcomb said, “Jen’s enthusiasm and love for gardening radiates all around her as she teaches our young students this art. She is instilling them with a sense of wonder regarding nature’s growing and living things that will remain with them for a lifetime.”

Elkins will continue the Garden Club in 2018 and work with the kindergarten class on an aquaponics system, allowing students to learn about a cycle that grows plants through water and fish waste.

Finally, Elkins brought the Yellow Tulip Project to campus.

The project aims to smash the stigma of mental illness by planting tulip bulbs. The entire school will participate to remember that “the bulb (hope) we can’t see is still there, even through harsh winters (hard times). The thousands of bulbs will create a sea of yellow happiness come spring,” Jen explained with a bright smile.

STUDENT PROFILES Pete Mote ’29

P

ete Mote embodies the quintessential child with a curious mind who is always eager to learn more. His love of reading, art, and building intertwine with a vibrant first grade imagination. Pete is a reader; he reads whenever he can.

Right now, he is engrossed in a world of mystical creatures and magical powers in his favorite book series, “Rainbow Magic.” Pete uses his preferred artistic mediums of Play D’oh® and clay to create sculptures inspired by his favorite stories.

Someday, he plans to have enough clay to sculpt a “really big one.” When Pete is introduced to something new he wants to learn more and get better at it. Last year, Pete began learning cursive writing and practiced on his own.

His teacher, Ms. Gallagher, introduced him to calligraphy and got him a set of pens to help him learn. When it comes to music, he is, “pretty great at violin.” He has been playing since he was five; he is now six. The ukulele, however, is quickly becoming Pete’s instrument of choice. Lucky for Pete, Ms. Gallagher teaches all her students the uke as part of her curriculum. For this and all the fun games they play in class, Ms. G. is why Pete loves coming to NYA.

Lexi Haedrich ’21

F

reshman Lexi Haedrich combines her art and love for animals with “My Little Cloud,” a philanthropic effort she started on her own to benefit homeless animals throughout the state of Maine and New England. When Lexi was in seventh grade, she began creating paintings of clouds.

“I have always loved clouds,” explains Lexi. “You can shape them to whatever you want, and they have a very calm and gentle feel about them.” She then built MyLittleCloud.net to sell her paintings, tell her story, and get other people involved in changing the lives of as many homeless companion animals as possible. 100% of the proceeds from every cloud painting sold goes to the Humane Society or directly to a specific shelter. In three years, she has donated over $3,700. She strives to continue to raise funds for animals in need and perfect her art. New pieces are constantly on her easel. “I love the feeling of the brush in my hand,” she says describing her fondness for painting. “I love the control that I have and how I’m able to let my mind onto a canvas.

Christine Reighley ’10

1930s

Christine Reighley ’10 always thought photography would be a hobby, until she found herself behind the desk of a monotonous job.

The hours between 9–5 never seemed to interest her, but as soon as her day wrapped up at the office, she jetted around Boston with her camera to capture what was left of the afternoon. After a year at a desk job, she migrated back to Maine without a job, to pursue a more creative career. In the midst of interviewing, an idea came to her that led her to start her own business and build that creative career for herself. Alongside her partner, Cam Held, she put together a new print publication called Maine the Way. This periodical shares real Maine stories told by Mainers through high-quality art direction and long-form journalism. Many say in starting a new business, one must wear lots of hats. Christine credits her time at NYA for her ability to juggle the logistical, financial, creative, and other components of her business. Since starting at NYA in sixth grade, she learned that being successful was not just about what happened in the classroom, but also on the playing field, in the studio, and especially in the community.

Jeffrey McCarthy ’83 Jeffrey McCarthy ’83 is a professor at the University of Utah, where he is director of the graduate program in environmental humanities. He spoke to the NYA Upper School on October 12, 2016. His talk, “The Alpine Route to Environmentalism,” explored the ways mountain adventure can lead to environmental consciousness, and was sponsored by the Kauffmann Program in Environmental Writing and Wilderness Exploration.

Jeffrey’s work focuses on human relations to the natural world, and on the extraordinary creative expressions of modernist literature.

He has been a Fulbright Fellow, a Mellon Fellow to the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas; and he has held research fellowships to the National Humanities Center, the Calgary Institute for the Humanities, and the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at Edinburgh University. His books include Contact: Mountain Climbing and Environmental Thinking, Green Modernism: Nature and the English Novel, and Conrad and Nature: New Essays. He also publishes in popular climbing and sailing magazines.

Heather Geoghan ’98 started a small coaching business called Power and Passion Triathlon to help other athletes looking to get into the sport or improve their training. She is part of the @iracelikeagirl team which focuses on women helping each other grow the sport and encourage and inspire girls of all ages. Most recently, Heather won third place overall at the Tri for a Cure and completed her first half ironman distance race this August.

H Gifts to the Academy Fund totaled $260,003. The Academy Fund provides vital support for current operations, teachers, financial aid, student programs, athletics, the arts, and more.

H Proceeds from the Soirée totaled $141,451 and supported NYA’s core programs, as well as the Kauffmann Program in Environmental Writing and Wilderness Exploration.

H Last year, $105,925 was raised in support of the Kauffmann Program in Environmental Writing and Wilderness Exploration. The Kauffmann Program both enhances the educational experience for NYA students and opens a portal of environmental awareness and experiential education to the greater community. The program features experiential classes and education, outdoor leadership programs, community summer programs, a statewide writing contest, and a community speaker series featuring environmental writers. Funds raised this year supported the purchase of a fleet of sea kayaks and the installation of a climbing wall on campus.

H Over $40,000 was raised through the Show Your Love campaign to establish a new scholarship honoring Jack McMahon’s 50 years in education. Each year, the admissions committee will present a financial award to an incoming ninth grader of high character and academic potential who has demonstrated a commitment to taking advantage of the diverse opportunities available at the Academy.

Since 1814, NYA has succeeded at bringing out the best in students and inspiring them to strive for excellence in all their pursuits. This is why I was immensely proud to be invited to join the NYA community. In my short time here, I have been impressed by the talented students, committed faculty and staff, as well as the many families who support NYA with their time, talent, and treasure.

Gifts to NYA provide the opportunity to secure the programs and values that have defined NYA for over 200 years and to help the Academy shape new strategies, facilities, and programs that will meet the needs of today’s students.
