Coaching Staff

Admission to NYA

PAVEL NAVRAT is in his first year as NYA head coach. Originally from Prague in the Czech Republic, Pavel came to the United States to play prep hockey at Westminster School in Connecticut. He went on to play four years DI hockey at the University of Vermont, where he competed in the Frozen Four in 1996. He worked with fellow UVM teammate, NHL goalie Tim Thomas, as his manager and NHL agent. Pavel is also the director of Navrat Performance, working with and training hockey players from around the world.

Founded in 1814, North Yarmouth Academy is an independent, college preparatory, coeducational school serving toddlers through twelfth grade students. NYA features a challenging curriculum in a supportive school environment, offering students small classes, personal attention, and the opportunity to pursue a rich variety of activities in athletics, academics, the arts, and community service. NYA has an enrollment of 300 students and the average class size is 15. Admission is selective. Our successful applicants typically have a strong academic track record, good character, and additional talents in the arts and/or athletics that they can contribute to the school community. Our strongest applicants have a broad range of interests and a desire to participate widely in a small school community. The admission process includes an application, interview, academic transcript, teacher recommendations, and admission testing.

EMILY CORRALES is in her first year as NYA assistant coach. She is a recent graduate of the University of New England. While at UNE, she played ice hockey for four years, while majoring in sports management with minors in coaching and business. Emily has been coaching for over eight years, including The Connecticut Northern Lights, West Hartford Youth Hockey league. Most recently, Emily coached with Biddeford High School in their 2016-17 season. In addition to coaching at NYA, Emily is also the head coach for UNE’s Women’s Club Hockey program. ROB COUTURIER is entering his third year as NYA’s Goalie Coach for both the girls and boys programs, JV and varsity. Prior to his time at NYA, Coach Couturier was an assistant coach for various Casco Bay Youth Hockey teams and was the Goalie Coach for Hampden Academy. He has been an instructor at the Black Bear Hockey Camps and, in 2015, founded ProForm Goalie Development, a company dedicated to helping goaltenders at any level hone their skills. SHELBY TURCOTTE has worked with hundreds of hockey players ranging from youth through professional. He has experience in developing the complete athlete through his custom 4-phase training system focusing on developing the total athlete through enhancing movement patterns. He holds a BS in Exercise Science with a concentration in Performance Enhancement from California University - Pennsylvania. He holds a Performance Enhancement Specialist Certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and his Level 2 Youth Conditioning Specialist Certification from the International Youth Conditioning Association.

GIRLS ICE HOCKEY Affording NYA NYA makes tuition affordable to families through our Financial Aid Program, in which grants are awarded based on a family’s financial need. Approximately 40 percent of NYA’s student body receives financial assistance through this program. Girls Hockey at NYA

Mission

NYA combines challenging college prep academics with a strong hockey program, allowing studentathletes to achieve their best both in the classroom and on the ice.

North Yarmouth Academy is an independent, college preparatory, coeducational school. The Academy offers a structured program that establishes clear standards and high expectations in an environment that emphasizes values of mutual respect, trust, and community. North Yarmouth Academy is dedicated to fostering integrity, character, and intellect in its students.

Exceptional coaching, top-rated facilities, and a competitive schedule are hallmarks of NYA hockey. Our interscholastic hockey program for girls begins in Middle School. Students in grades six through eight practice daily and play local school teams.

NYA Athletic Program

For Upper School girls, the varsity squad plays more than 20 games. The team has over an hour of daily ice time and a competitive schedule with an average of two games per week. Our experienced coaches support students in their growth and development, both as students and athletes.

Stride Envy Skill Development NYA is fortunate to have Stride Envy Skating as our source for player skill development. Stride Envy’s philosophy emphasizes proper technique, practice, and focused training that will produce more efficient and productive hockey players. Travis Roy Ice Arena NYA is dedicated to providing elite training facilities for aspiring college athletes. NYA’s on-campus ice arena is named after former Panther star Travis Roy, whose college career at Boston University was cut short by a severe neck injury. The arena boasts one of the top hockey training facilities in Maine. Travis Roy Arena includes a full weight room, cardio room, training room, newly-renovated locker rooms and coaches’ offices. All players have access to NYA’s certified athletic trainer, strength and conditioning coach, and laundry service.

The athletic program is an integral part of the North Yarmouth Academy experience. The philosophy of the program is grounded in the importance of physical fitness and developing character, cooperation and teamwork through athletics. All students are required to participate in an after school commitment, either athletics or performing arts, throughout the year.

Prep League for Varsity Girls The NYA girls varsity team plays in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC). NYA is on the ice with some of the strongest prep hockey teams throughout New England, along with skating against the best teams in Maine. The Prep League offers NYA studentathletes the opportunity to compete against some of the country’s best high school players and to be seen by college scouts and recruiters.

After NYA NYA girls hockey players have continued their careers at the college level. Recent studentathletes have successfully played for Amherst College, Bowdoin College, Chatham University, Colby College, The College of Holy Cross, Connecticut College, University of Southern Maine, University of Massachusetts, St. Anselm College, and the University of Vermont.
