Letter from Head of School BEN JACKSON
Our Mission North Yarmouth Academy is an independent, college preparatory, coeducational school. The Academy offers a structured program that establishes clear standards and high expectations in an environment that emphasizes values of mutual respect, trust, and community. North Yarmouth Academy is dedicated to fostering integrity, character, and intellect in its students.

If you have recently visited campus, you likely felt the positive momentum and energy here. This energy is a direct result of the work the faculty and students engage in on a daily basis. As an institution, our commitment is to support the students in pursuit of their goals and interests. At the same time, we also focus on providing the students and faculty with proper resources and facilities to support the mission. To that end, it is a time of growth in many ways for the Academy.
The North Yarmouth Academy program encourages students to develop: Problem-solving skills based on sound analytical and creative thought; Sophistication in writing, speaking, and artistic expression; Appreciation for the importance of athletic activity, teamwork, and cooperation; :LSM JVUÄKLUJL HUK ZLSM YLZWLJ[ [OYV\NO H IYLHK[O VM experiences that extend beyond the classroom; Concern for the larger community and an appreciation for the natural environment; Desire to continue the process of lifelong learning.

Exhilarating. Daunting. Empowering.

very graduate of NYA for nearly 40 years has experienced the same rollercoaster of emotions that is the senior speech, one of the greatest traditions of the academic program at North Yarmouth Academy. Seniors are free to speak about any topic they believe is both important to them and meaningful for the entire community to hear. Speeches range from the personal to the philosophical, serious to humorous, providing insight into each student’s personality and interests as well as the ethos of each year’s senior class as a whole. “It’s a chance for the students to think a little bit about who they are as a person,” says NYA English Department Chair, Ross Markonish. “To YLÅLJ[ VU ^OH[»Z PTWVY[HU[ [V [OLT HUK [V ^VYR VU ZVTL VM [OL RL` ZRPSSZ ^L ÄUK PTWVY[HU[ OLYL at NYA, presenting themselves as members of our community.”

used to often travel to the Northern parts of Pakistan with my parents during the summers. In 2016, we were driving to a place called Deosai Plains when our car broke down. We decided to walk around a YLTV[L ]PSSHNL ^OPSL V\Y KYP]LY ^HZ Ä_PUN P[ While doing so, I came across little kids who were staring at me and the books I was holding, so I offered it to them. Their smiles were full of joy so I asked my parents why they were so happy to have my books and if they didn’t have any of their own. To this, my parents explained that they live so far away that having access to good books is a challenge. A majority of these kids don’t even have proper schools in their area. This had surprised me, hence I started thinking about sending my books to them and asking my fellow friends and cousins to do the same. This had led me to the decision of collecting and donating books with my parents’ full support. Ever since I moved to the USA, this project has been dominating my thoughts, therefore, with the support of everyone at NYA, I’ve decided to launch this project now. Everyone can drop old, used, and new books for all ages in the Library at NYA. This would be an ongoing drive as I intend to collect books throughout the year and keep sending them to children with limited access. My project’s idea is to build mobile libraries in the rural area of northern Pakistan and assign them to different schools in various locations.

She collected over 4,000 books to send to remote areas of northern Pakistan for children who could not afford them and had no access to quality learning.
Unfortunately, she lacked funds for shipping and ran into restrictions such as censorship in Pakistan. So instead, she donated the books to the local Salvation Army who delivered them to educational institutions in need around the globe. To meet her goal and keep her promise to donate books to rural Pakistan, with the help of family and friends, when she visited Pakistan over the summer, she was able to buy and donate 2,000 local books and school supplies to rural schools.
What now? Alaina would like to continue the book drive, but she also plans to raise funds to ship them. One of the schools she visited in Pakistan was
called The Aabaroo Foundation (Aabaroo means Respect). “In their school, they had about 8,000 students for whom they provided free education, school supplies, food, healthcare on campus, and fresh milk for the children as well as their families, she explained. She hopes to add an ‘Adopt a Child’ program to her Aagahi book drive, where $100 per year would cover the cost for one child to go to school. In return, she would provide the donor with information about the child, updates, and possibly a chance to talk to the children. She would also like to make story time videos with the help of her classmates. We are excited to see how this project unfolds!
Alaina was born in Michigan but grew up in Pakistan. She moved back to the U.S. with her mother and sister in 2017. She lives in Yarmouth. NYA Brings Supplies to Malawi
L
ast spring, Ellen Gagne’s third and fourth grade class studied the African country of Malawi. They explored the culture, economics, and geography, and studied the book, ;OL )V` >OV /HYULZZLK [OL >PUK by William Kamkwamba. They viewed slideshows and videos to explore the customs, celebrations, and traditions of Malawi. They made connections, asked interesting questions, and discovered similarities and differences between our cultures. The class chose to carry out a service-learning project for an impoverished village school with approximately 1,000 students in Malawi. They raised money to buy needed classroom supplies, such as paper and pencils, by holding a bake sale and sponsoring a Dress Down Day.
Over the summer, Ellen and her daughter, Hannah ’19, who earned a Diploma with Distinction in Global Citizenship, visited the village school in Malawi. With the money raised by Ellen’s class, they were able to supply over 2,000 notebooks and pencils. “We also donated $300 in food to a boarding school for the blind that truly did not have enough food to feed the students or teachers,” she reported. “We also bought $100 worth of soccer balls to hand out in the villages. The children play soccer—‘football’— with plastic bags all tied up,” said Ellen. “This has been a lifechanging experience for all of us! I am very proud of my class! They made a huge difference in many children’s lives.”

While at NYA, she shared stories of her home and perceptions of ours at an assembly. Markonish and NYA students Miles Chapman ’19, Serena Mower ’20, and Te’Andre King ’20 also spoke about their travels to Arkhangelsk. Miles, Serena, and Te’Andre were invited to play basketball last summer as part of a sister city exchange program through the State Department’s Youth Leadership through Sports (YLS) Program. For over thirty years The Greater PortlandRussian Sister City Project (The Archangel Committee) has promoted friendship and understanding between the people of Greater Portland, Maine and the people of the City of Arkhangelsk, Russia, resulting in the “Treaty on Friendly Ties” in 1988.

This summer, NYA began to renovate and expand the (former) library and student lounge spaces in the Curtis Building into a state-of-the-art learning commons. Set to open in winter 2020, the NYA Learning Commons will be the nerve center of the school and provide the structure and space for information technology, online education, tutoring, collaboration, content creation, meeting, reading, and study. To date, $805,392 has been raised in support of this major campus improvement.
Athletic Projects Completed with Nearly $500,000 in Gifts The three NYA tennis courts were completely reconstructed, with $179,680 donated in support of the project by Lori and Chris Poulin P’22, the United States Tennis Association, and many other NYA families. Soirée Paddle Raise for STEM Education NYA prepares students to think deeply, remain curious, and try new things so they will be successful in an ever-changing world. This means ensuring all students have access to highquality learning opportunities in STEM subjects, providing faculty with the resources they need to implement effective approaches for STEM teaching, equipping facilities to support STEM educational experiences, and emphasizing hands-on learning to increase student engagement and achievement. Last year, our community rallied and raised $70,750 for STEM programming.
Show Your Love Your participation matters! 518 alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends made a gift to NYA during the Show Your Love campaign in March, helping to unlock a $30,000 challenge gift from Board President Allen ‘60 and Vicki Bornheimer GP’30. Together, we shattered our goals and raised $61,420 for NYA.
