parents @NYA NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY
When your child starts at NYA, so do you. The first day of school is special, whether it’s your child’s very first day in preschool or her senior year. Will he write his name for the first time? Will he be inspired by poetry? Will she discover a passion for biology or marine ecology? Being an NYA parent comes with enormous benefits – seeing your child get a world-class education is certainly one, but so is being a part of NYA’s larger community. All adults at NYA - teachers, coaches, parents and staff alike are integral to our community of learners. And, as is true at every independent school, being part of a community comes with a responsibility - to support the school in ways that are meaningful for your family.
why giving matters The cost to educate each child at NYA is higher than the tuition, as it is at virtually all independent schools in the U.S. Charitable contributions enable us to minimize tuition increases and avoid setting tuition at a level that would put NYA out of reach for all but the wealthiest families. Your participation allows NYA to provide each child with an outstanding education by attracting and retaining the best teachers and most qualified students, and ensures that NYA has the programs and facilities that support a broad and challenging educational experience.
Every gift, no matter the size, ensures that NYA will continue to develop independent thinkers who value learning, creativity, and the intellectual process throughout their lives.
how to give Our goal is to have every family participate to the extent that they are able. We ask you to make NYA one of your family’s top charitable priorities while the Academy is your child’s educational home.
NYA offers a variety of ways to be involved philanthropically. The Academy Fund The foundation of NYA’s culture of philanthropy, the Academy Fund provides our school with unrestricted funds to support all areas of the operating budget. Our Parent Academy Fund appeal launches in the fall.
NYA Soirée Each spring, NYA hosts a special fundraising event, the NYA Soirée, in support of school-wide initiatives. The event, supported by a team of parent volunteers, is a mainstay of community and fundraising activities. If you would like to sponsor this event, or volunteer please contact Randall Wade Thomas at rthomas@nya.org.
Planned Giving
Leadership Giving NYA’s Leadership Giving Circles recognize donors who make aggregate gifts of $1,000 or more during the fiscal year. Membership brings with it invitations to special events and special recognition in the appropriate giving circle. If you can consider a gift at the leadership level, please contact the Development Office.
For more information, or to make a gift online, please visit the Giving section of the NYA website or contact us by phone at 207.847.5406 or by email at rthomas@nya.org.
Planned gifts come in many forms, from bequests to charitable trusts. Some options provide income to you and your family; others may have significant tax benefits; and all of them ensure healthy future support for NYA. If you are interested in learning more, please contact the Development Office.
Parent Ambassadors This active group of parent volunteers advocates for and raises funds in support of the Academy Fund and other priority initiatives. Ambassadors are available to answer your questions about giving to NYA and the impact it has on our students’ education. To become a Parent Ambassador, please contact the Development Office.
ways to give Cash or Check: the most immediate and direct way to support the school. Securities: can result in significant tax benefits to the donor. Matching gifts: offered by many employers. Ask yours if it offers this benefit. Donor-advised funds: a flexible and easy way to support the school. “NYA is still the same safe and vibrant community that it was when I attended. John and I are thrilled to see our children thrive here and take advantage of the rich programming and enjoy the dynamic students, faculty and coaches. Volunteering and giving financially comes naturally when we see how much our family benefits from all that the Academy does to create leaders during these most important years.” ~John Rohde & Jenn Humphreys Rohde ’88, parents of Chas ’22, Seamus ’23, Xiomara, and Nell ’25

All are invited to attend PA meetings, which provide an opportunity to connect with school leadership and hear updates on important school-related topics. Class Representatives Every NYA grade benefits from the help of Class Representatives, who volunteer to support the grade with special projects and events, organize parent volunteers, and share information with families.
