AT NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY
a unique opportunity to discover your path
a unique opportunity to discover your path
The postgraduate program at NYA is open to high school graduates who would benefit from an additional year of study before college. The NYA Postgraduate Program gives students the opportunity to mature academically in a structured, supportive environment. A year at NYA provides an added foundation necessary for a successful transition to college.
At North Yarmouth Academy, learning happens in the classrooms, on the fields and ice, and in the rehearsal halls. Students enjoy small class sizes, a culture of honesty and integrity, and one-onone mentoring from their teachers.
NYA students graduate with a strong foundation in writing, critical thinking, and confident self-expression. NYA graduates adjust easily to the demands and freedom that college brings, allowing them to focus on discovering their paths in life.
NYA’s faculty members help postgraduate students identify their strengths and their growth opportunities, and they work closely with students to develop a fine-tuned course of study that meets their academic goals. The postgraduate curriculum offers choices along three paths: Humanities, Math & Science, and Fine Arts. The course of study includes AP courses, visual and performing arts, and level III and IV language courses in Spanish, French, and Latin. A curriculum path is customized to address each postgraduate student’s needs and to bring out the best in each individual student.
Examples could include:
HUMANITIES PATH
AP English Literature
AP U.S. History
Psychology or Creative Writing
Economics
Spanish IV
MATH & SCIENCE PATH
English 12
AP Biology
AP Statistics
Biochemistry
French or Spanish III
FINE ARTS PATH

AP Studio Art
AP English Literature

Postgraduate students may also pursue an independent study in an area of great interest either as a self-designed course or online. This allows the student to engage in a particular passion. In addition, there are many activities a postgraduate student may participate in such as Kiva investment club, chess club, outing club, environmental club, robotics, volunteering, and more.
Postgraduate students immediately begin one-on-one meetings with NYA’s college counselor to identify colleges that meet the student’s criteria. Upon finding the right fit, our college counselor will help work through the college application process step-by-step. Virtually all NYA students go on immediately to a four-year college or university. A small number of graduates choose to take a gap year before attending college.
All individual programs will be created in conjunction with the Director of Athletics and the Head of Upper School.
Postgraduate students may choose from a variety of extracurricular and athletic opportunities that may include the following:
• NEPSAC Prep Hockey
• School clubs including music and language
• Theater
• Middle School mentoring
• Local and recreational club athletics
• Year-round personal training on campus
• Participation on one of NYA’s 19 varsity sports teams. As a fifth year student, PG students will be permitted to train with the team and participate in non-league contests
