October makes me think Burgers and Hotdogs! By Melissa Compton.
It’s October again, when I think of October I think of Halloween, which somehow immediately fast-forwards my brain to Bonfire nights, my bonfire nights as a kid were filled with community events hot dogs, burgers and hot chocolate were the
most common offering foodwise at these events—there’s something magical about those nights it’s strange the cold, the smell from the fireworks a fire burning somewhere and bumping into people you hadn’t seen all year and the joy if they actually had cans of diet coke on offer. I am not sure if it was the speedway or bonfire night that made me first love burgers and hot dogs but you could say it was outdoor events! I have always been into unusual burgers which is probably why I love Gonzo’s so much. But outside of this I do love Donut Burgers, I first discovered them at Smoke Haus, Swansea years ago but have since then developed a recipe so, I can make them at home (it’s on the next page) so let’s talk Hot Dogs for a second, I love that in the U.K we are developing our range of Hot Dogs, although I think American will always dominate the market with variety though. My Hot Dog has to have onions, the mustard has to line the bottom on the roll and needs to be English Mustard (it just tastes so good), I also have a strong dislike of American Cheese sauce sprinkle real cheese on there or just don’t bother.
What’s your favourite? 7
Recipe: Doughnut Bacon Cheeseburger.
Ingredients:
Instructions:
1 glazed donut sliced in half,
Cook beef burger by your selected method, I think it tastes best pan fried.
2 Bacon rashers
Put Burger together in any order you wish, I use:
50g Cheddar cheese sliced
Bottom of the donut, Beefburger
1 fresh Beef burger (I use supermarket brought ones) (Asda) Relish or ketchup
Bacon, Relish/sauce Cheese Top of the donut

Zena’s Autumn update:
Hello, my foodie friends – all things considered it’s been a good summer. We’ve had street food markets all over Norfolk brining us food from far and wide to enjoy al fresco. A few restaurants have shuffled around like the Last Wine Bar taken over by their head chef Iain. Caterers taken over pubs like the Last Pub Standing – offering a taste of the Caribbean in their open patio garden out the back. After all the take always in lockdown we seem to have a taste for junk (in a good way) so we’ve seen the rise of street food in restaurants too like Beasty Boys Grill at the Steam packet, offering dirty burgers.
Let’s talk donuts – savoury donuts, they are a mighty fine thing and a unique eating experience. Jive did a fried chicken special, in a fried donut with icing – which looked incredible. XO kitchen has the occasional deep-fried bun donut with an amazing sweet & savoury sugar dusting filled with tender Chinese sticky pork. And we can’t talk street food without mentioning the mighty fine Fry Up Police – FUP burger, who hasn’t melted eating one of those.
All this naughtiness gave me inspiration to experiment with Crumpets from Crumpetorium – they make VIP plain and flavoured crumpets for delivery or buy from farm shops. When I first taste their Chocolate and Orange (pictured above) one with chunks of quality oozie melting chocolate after toasting I nearly cried – but I also thought of ways to cook with them. So, I invited the maker ‘Kat’ round for a cooking recipe photo day. Why not stuff with something good and then dip in beer batter to deep fry until crispy
9
Here’s my beer batter recipe: Zena’s Beer Batter Ingredients: 4 tablespoons plain flour pinch salt 1 teaspoon caster sugar ½ teaspoon baking powder 2 teaspoons any vinegar (I used sherry) enough local beer to whisk in to a smooth thick batter, the consistency of lightly whipped cream, but dip-able.
Instructions: I stuffed the 1st crumpet with jam and ice-cream, the 2nd with lotus spread and the 3rd with fruity jam and blackberry’s. Dipped in the batter until well coated all over, let the excess drip off and deep fried in hot oil until golden and crisp –
A thick batter helps seal in all the badness – so it holds moist and tasty in the middle.
For added badness I tossed in a little sugar with crushed lotus biscuits and a pinch of cinnamon.
10
Of course, beer batter is good for all sorts including fish, chicken strips, veggies like cauliflower and fried jam sandwiches. The American haven’t found much they can’t batter and deep fry, they’ve even made national competitions out of deep frying!!!
Talking of deep frying - Christmas is nearly upon us and all sorts of yummy Crimbo seasonal specials will be hitting the menus – The Grosvenor fish bar always has a Christmas dinner on with battered sausage, stuffing, and gravy plus of course their yummy chips. Lucy’s on the market had deep fried sprouts last year and a deep-fried mince pie. But I’ll tell you all about the Christmas specials next month.
Plus, my free promotion Secret Menu Norfolk is coming back to only Norwich in February – where hopefully some restaurants, cafes and bars will offer an off-menu dish for the month at a set price. I’ll tell you about that as it happens.
So, for now – keep supporting local, follow the rules and enjoy what we have, because if all else fails we still have food.

The Righteous One by Neil Perry Gordon The Righteous One: A Cobbler's Journey into the Dreamworld and Beyond Moshe the cobbler, is a gentle, sixty-year-old tzaddik—a righteous and saintly Jew—who is called upon to rekindle his divine connection to the Almighty in order to destroy the notorious New York gangster and rasha Solomon Blass, a man who uses his power of foreseeing events via his vivid dreams to advance his own financial interests.
While Solomon and his son, Myron, seek to control much of Manhattan—its biggest businesses, its police department, and its city government—they find themselves embroiled in conflict with numerous powerful people from both their waking life and the dream world, where Moshe has begun training with the descendants of an ancient mystical spirit for his inevitable confrontation with Solomon. As the final battle approaches, the divide between good and evil becomes ever clearer and each character faces the consequences of his past, present, and future actions. Will Solomon’s wily tenacity prevail, or will Moshe be strong enough to destroy the rasha’s wicked soul?
A page-turning peak into the journey of consciousness through the experience of lucid dreaming and how such dreams can influence us all. Ideal for anyone captivated by spiritualism, intrigue, gangsters and more.

My First Panto: Goldilocks and The Three Bears runs 27 November 2020 to 10 January 2021 at The Garage in Chapel Field North. My First Panto: Cinderella Rocks runs 16 December 2020 to 3 January 2021 at The Workshop in New Conduit Street. Adam Taylor, The Garage’s executive director and head of centre, said all venues and All-In Productions are applying everything learnt from Bo Peep to the Christmas shows. Both will feel different from pre-Covid productions while still being full of the interactive family fun the My First series is known for. “There’ll be smaller audiences, two-metre distancing, face masks where appropriate. At the moment the shows will be end on. But this is a process, not a destination. When we made Bo Peep in August, the rules around singing changed. So we will be focusing on additional guidance over the coming months and going above and beyond to make sure our audiences feel safe and comfortable while still having fun.” My First Panto: Goldilocks and The Three Bears invites you to head out to the Wild West where Mummy Bear, Daddy Bear and Baby Bear live quite happily. Life is sweeter than an enormous jar of honey. But a mischievous wind is blowing down the prairie and with it the famous bandit Goldilocks, who causes havoc while they are at Old Man Rogers’ annual rodeo. What will she eat? What will she break? Sing, dance and play along with Goldilocks and the Bears in the only pantomime in Norwich that isn’t too hot, isn’t too cold but is just right. HER Business Elite Academy: the training course for start-up business owners or women looking to start-up businesses soon. The course covers area’s like discovery questions: assessing where you are at in your business journey and how to personalise actions to reach your business and personal goals, building solid foundations, money blocks, reflection, language and content, growing your audience, creating, launching and promotion of offers and an indepth reflection of progress and setting follow up action points. The great Lord Alan Sugar once said a new business owner should be assessing their business weekly, did they reach their weekly goals if not, figure out why not and fix it immediately. This is exactly what the Elite Academy achieves in a supportive and empowering way. It encourages the business owner to be accountable and discover where their pitfalls are week on week building on knowledge delivered through short videos on Facebook and training material accessed via the website with tasks to complete. Not to be confused with so online courses that have tasks that take a few minutes, these tasks are thoughtprovoking and take time to consider, but then you get a whole week to complete in and there is even a catch up week – who doesn’t love those (we lived for those in university). The Facebook video for the week introducing the tasks is released on the same day and time each week making scheduling easier. Enrolment on the HER Business Elite Academy comes with 12- month membership to Her Business Revolution networking, access to specialized mentoring, and discounts on Virtual Assistants and support services. Some places on the Elite Academy are currently heavily discounted making this an ideal time to join. There are 3 membership tiers offered by HER Business Revolution Basic, Standard, and Elite with benefits varying across the three, priced from £10 - £38.00. The Elite Academy also forms part of the Elite Package, it is worth checking out HER Business Revolution’s social media as they run discounted packages as well. The Canary trailblazers - Two Firsts, a Second, and a Last There have been many trailblazers in Norwich City FC’s fine history and I’ve picked out four of those heroes who have worn the yellow shirt and trod the hallowed turf at Carrow Road with pride. This quartet pushed back the boundaries in their own way in their own era and they deserve recognition for their achievements. Perhaps it’s a good time to offer them a belated return to the spotlight to once again take a bow and enjoy our appreciation, applause, and respect. The Canary trailblazers. Two Firsts, a Second, and a Last. A FIRST… Onel Hernández - NCFC record: Winger, 84 apps, 11 goals, 2018-?? Onel Lázaro Hernández Mayea was born in Morón, Cuba in 1993. A move to Germany as a young child opened up football as a hobby. Recognising his talent, several German clubs showed interest and turned professional with Arminia Bielefeld in 2010. He went on to play for SV Werder Bremen II, VfL Wolfsburg II, and Eintracht Braunschweig, before signing for Norwich City in January 2018. The sprightly winger proved immediately popular scoring 11 goals in 84 appearances. In 2019, Hernandez became not only the first Cuban player to play in the Premier League but also the first to score. We all hope Onel continues to prosper and enjoy his time at Carrow Road. A joy to have around.
ANOTHER FIRST… Tony Collins - NCFC record: Left-winger, 29 apps, 2 goals, 1953-55 Anthony ‘Tony’ Norman Collins was born in London in 1926. The start of his professional football career was delayed by the war but he soon caught up, playing for Watford, Norwich City, Torquay, Crystal Palace, and Rochdale throughout the 1950s. He spent a couple of years at Norwich in the mid-1950s as a left winger, scoring 2 goals in 29 appearances. After his playing career Collins moved into coaching, management, and scouting. He was appointed player/manager of Rochdale in June 1960 and renewed his acquaintance with the Canaries by taking Rochdale to the 1962 League Cup final where they met over two legs (with NCFC winning 4-0 on aggregate). He scouted for several clubs including Bristol City, Leeds United, and Manchester United; unearthing players such as Lee Sharpe, Paul McGrath, and Alan Shearer. He also scouted for the England national team. Collins was equally notable for being the first black mixed-race manager of a professional football league club in England. With his daughter, Sarita, he co-authored a biography called Tony Collins: Football Master Spy, published in 2016.
37
A SECOND…
Sammy Chung - NCFC record: Striker, 48 apps, 9 goals, 1955-57
I must confess a fondness for Sammy Chung. When I was a small boy, collecting football cards was the thing. I vividly remember buying them from our local sweet shop - gloriously colourful little packets of six with a ghastly flat bit of grey chewing gum enclosed - and swapping them at school: ‘Got, got, got, got…’ Well, that set of football cards included Sammy as he was manager of Wolves at the time. You always remember your first set of collecting cards. I remember every player and manager in that set (those that I got) and have a nostalgic fondness for them all, even if I never heard of the players again.
Anyway, to Sammy and his career…
Cyril ‘Sammy’ Chung was born in Berkshire in 1932. He started his professional football career in 1953 after completing National Service playing for Reading, Norwich City, and Watford over a thirteen year career. Striker Chung cost City £6,000 from Reading and he scored 9 goals in 48 games for the Canaries over three seasons from 1954/55 - 1956/57.
Chung started his coaching career in the mid-1960s when still a player at Watford under Bill McGarry. When McGarry left Watford to go to Ipswich Town he took Sammy with him, where they won the second division championship in 1968. From there they moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers, where they won the League Cup in 1974. After relegation in 1976 McGarry left Wolves and Chung took over the reins, winning promotion back to the first division at the first attempt.
Chung later went on to manage and coach at Stoke City, Blackburn Rovers, and Doncaster Rovers. He also had spells abroad in Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, and Barbados. Not a bad place to finish!
Chung was the second person of Chinese origin to manage a professional English football league club.
The first - who Chung saw play but never met - was Frank Soo who joined Scunthorpe United as manager in June 1959.
Soo was 21 years older than Chung and played for Stoke City and Luton Town during the 1930s and 1940s. His management career included Padova in Italy, several clubs in Scandinavia, and (as above) Scunthorpe in the 1950s.
Soo was the first player of Chinese origin to play in the English football league and the first non-white player to play for England - although in unofficial wartime matches - lining up alongside Stanley Matthews.
But, despite Soo’s extraordinary achievements, Sammy Chung (admittedly due to fond memories and childhood nostalgia) will always be a ‘first’ to me. 38
AND A LAST…
Jeremy Goss - NCFC record: Midfielder, 188 apps, 14 goals, 1984-96
The date: 30th April 1994. The venue: Anfield. The stand: The legendary all-standing 30,000 capacity Spion Kop
The final home match of the 1993/94 season saw Norwich play away at Liverpool. The Spion Kop was the iconic Anfield stand and after the game it was due to be demolished to meet new stadium safety recommendations.
But, the home fans’ celebrations on the day were subverted as another glorious Jeremy Goss hoof spoilt the party - although the hosts were generous in their appreciation. Goss’s winning strike earned the Canaries an unexpected 1-0 away victory and his goal was the last ever scored in front of the Kop.
But perhaps Gossy can offer us something more than a ‘last’. After all, he was born in Dhekalia, Cyprus in 1965, and went on to represent Wales internationally. There can’t have been too many Welsh Cypriot volleyers of spectacular goals who’ve graced Carrow Road over the years, can there? I would say that’s a ‘first’ in anybody’s book.
Thanks for the memories Jeremy Goss, Sammy Chung, Tony Collins, and Onel Hernández. The Canary trailblazers.
There have been many. Hopefully there will be many more.

Review: The Foodie Room, High Street, Swansea
We’ve been following The Foodie Room on Facebook for a few weeks now, back in August 2020, Hayward and Holdings Caterers announced the opening of The Foodie Room , combining with Coalpit welsh cake , they sell all kinds of bake goods along with tea and coffee, you can even get delivery (Llanelli ,delivery on Friday only) and even the odd cookery lesson with Chef Adam. They have just unveiled their Christmas Party hamper from £10.95 per person you can pre-order by email. From the start The Foodie Room’s Facebook page has been incredible from images of setting up the shop to their latest offers. We check in daily. We finally got the chance to pop in, this great little bakery shop is exactly what the high street need, situated next to the Jobcentre, food options were limited there until this gem of home-baked goodness arrived. As you enter via the small slope there are two tables and chairs outside, expect a small wait and rightly so as the shop is small so it doesn’t take much to form a line, but the warm welcome that awaits it will be worth it. There is a variety of items on sale. On this occasion we had a steak bake, a sausage roll and two Jammie Dodger Cupcakes, the bill came to under £8.00. The sausage roll was large sized and encased inside the pastry was a large sausage, full of flavour and very filling. The steak bake which a friend ate, had golden flaky pastry, and I quote “better than Greggs – there is actually meat in there,” (sorry Greggs!) so apparently full of meaty goodness. Not surprisingly the cupcakes consisted of a light and fluffy golden sponge, topped with buttercream drizzled with strawberry sauce and topped a mini Jammie Dodger biscuit, perfection. This amazing shop is constantly adding to their collection – I can’t wait to try the cheesecake jars and salads. Developed over 12 years, with 5 of those years under Steam Greenlight’s Early Access program, Kenshi released in December 2018 and remained among the top 100 most played games throughout 2019 with many players clocking over 1,000 hours of playtime. “We would not have achieved this without the passionate community of players who supported us from an early stage and have come back to play Kenshi time and time again”, says Lo-Fi Games’ CEO and Head Developer Chris Hunt, “Kenshi’s great for making your own stories and modding, which offers different experience of gameplay each time. We want to thank all fans who have shared their creations and have supported the game throughout the years.”

54
Lo-Fi Games have revealed to their fans that Kenshi 2 is currently being developed with the Unreal Engine by a team of 15, with the new office based in Bristol.
About Kenshi Kenshi is a single-player, free-roaming squad-based RPG with a focus on open-ended sandbox gameplay features. With 870 square kilometers of open-world map to explore and non-linear story, the game will never seek to limit the player or restrict their playstyle. Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a warlord, an adventurer, a farmer, a slave, or just food for the cannibals. Craft your equipment, train your squad, and build your base. Never forget that you are not the chosen one. You are not great and powerful. You don't have more 'hitpoints' than everyone else. You are not the center of the universe, and you are not special. Unless you work for it. Kenshi is available to purchase globally on Steam, GOG and other stores. Follow Kenshi on Twitter, Facebook, and Steam.

Norwich Nights Presents: Story Corner
THE DAY WE MET BY MELISSA COMPTON. So, I was in the car with my very close friend Miranda, we were car driving towards a church on the outskirts of Coventry in the West Midlands. We were on our way to Miranda’s rehearsal church service. Miranda was getting married in 2 months before she and Phil moved to America. Phil was from Texas, but this story isn’t about them. We had just been to a cake tasting session at the baker’s and to be honest I’m wishing I was back there. That chocolate cake was so nice! Finally, we are pulling up to an old stone church, it was picturesque, but I just wanted the boring stuff over and done with. I sighed as we stopped, before getting out of the car. A gust of wind swept across my face and I turned to see Phil standing next to what was the prettiest boy I had ever seen. He stood there in blue jeans and what was possibly the tightest white shirt I had seen too, his blue eyes glisten in the sun, and his hair hung half way down his face perfectly blowing in the wind, even the wind seemed to respect his perfect brown hair. He smiled at us, and I just wanted to jump up and down, but I just smiled back. Miranda turn and looked at me and said, “Do not even think about it!” “Think about what,” I asked. “It’s Phil’s brother Mark and he’s trouble, leave it be!” “Really,” I said, before walking into the church. “Now, just sit on the bench till I need you it won’t take long,” Miranda said.
56
So, I sit on the antique pine church stall, and I smile when Mark sits down close to me, until. “Mark sit on the opposite end to Mel please and behave yourself for once,” Phil said. Mark moves a little further away and tries to make a shocked face in reply to Phil’s comment. “I just laugh, as Phil walks to the front of the church and stands beside Miranda and they talk to the vicar. Once they are distracted in their conversation. Mark is slowly edging towards me, and I am trying to watch his eye’s dancing without getting caught. I am so bad at this he’s caught me twice already. I try once more, as I turn my head; he holds out his hand and says, “Come on. Let’s go outside,” “Okay,” I say, as I put my hand in his and we ran outside. We’re outside now round the back of the church stood on the grass. I am staring at his eye’s again, I never knew boys could be so pretty. Okay, I can’t see his eye’s now their shut, I feel his lips on mine and his hand on my waist, then I shut mine too. I must have slipped into a trance because now I can hear, “Melissa, get inside now!” It’s Miranda “Oh shit, I’m in trouble now!” THE END
