3 SIMPLE STEPS Contents TO GETTING INFORMATION STARTED STEP 1

Getting in. At the front of the queue you will need to pay your entrance fee, hand over your advance ticket or show your CAMRA membership card. All of these methods will gain you entrance to the Festival.

W EL C O M E

STEP 2

Get a glass & beer card. As you enter, on your left you will find the glasses counter where you will need to purchase a Beer Card to pay for your beer. You may also buy Beer Cards in the World Beer Bar. Please be aware that the bars do not take cash. You will also be able to purchase a souvenir beer glass to drink from. To get you started we offer the glass and £7 Beer Card for £10 (£3 payment for the glass). Anything that you do not spend is refundable and if you do not wish to take your glass with you when you leave, we will refund the £3 also. If you do intend to spend more than £7 you may ask the cashier for as many extra £5 or £10 Beer Cards that you think you will require. If you have your money ready before you approach the glasses stand this will help us keep the queues down and you to get your beverage quicker!

STEP 3

Get a drink! Go to the bar near where you see the drink you wish to purchase and ask the bar staff for the amount that you wish. All of our glasses offer thirds, halves and pints. To pay, you hand over the Beer Card to the bar staff, who will cross off the appropriate amount. You may return to the Glasses stand at any point to buy more cards or you can also purchase these at the World Beer Bar. IMPORTANT NOTES Please treat your beer cards as cash as we cannot replace lost cards. Don’t leave your glass or Beer Cards unattended on the bar. To reduce theft we reserve the right to limit the number of Beer Cards and glasses to be refunded to any person and we may ask proof of identity before refunding multiple beer cards. CAMRA: RESPONSIBLE DRINKING CAMRA actively promotes responsible drinking and recognises the harmful effects of high levels of alcohol consumption. We want everyone to enjoy the Norwich Beer Festival responsibly and safely. For most, moderate alcohol consumption is compatible with a healthy lifestyle. So why not consider ordering your beer in thirds this year? All our official festival glasses are marked with third of a pint lines. This means you can enjoy a greater variety of beers while managing your consumption. For more information about responsible drinking visit: www.drinkaware.co.uk

41ST NORWICH BEER FESTIVAL

Great British Beer Festival Winter returns to Norwich in 2019 Following the success of previous years, Norwich hosts the Great British Beer Festival Winter for the final time in February 2019. The national CAMRA festival moves location every three years, therefore it will move from 2020. The new location will be announced on the website, where details of the 2019 Norwich festival and Fringe are shown. Plans are already underway to provide you with quality beer, cider and perry from around the UK and the world. Though the Great British Beer Festival Winter is a festival held in winter, it offers a variety of seasonal beer styles for the discerning customer. Although planning is in the early stages, we have our sights set on increasing the attendance by a further 10%. We are also encouraging more local pubs to

winter.gbbf.org.uk

take part in the very successful Fringe Festival, where we raise the profile of local hostelries at a quiet time of the year, and support the lead into Great British Beer Festival Winter. It was good to get such positive feedback from everyone who attended the event in February this year. There was a change of marketing emphasis which certainly reaped excellent results.

to see if they would like to have a brewery bar at the Great British Beer Festival Winter, so far the response has been very positive, again watch this space.

It was good to see that the top two beers of the Champion Winter Beer of Britain, crowned here in Norwich in February, went on to win 2nd and 1st place in the overall Champion Beer of British competition, held by national CAMRA in London in August, albeit in reverse order. Congratulations to both Siren and Green Jack Breweries!

Thank you to everyone who volunteers or visits the February festival, and we look forward to welcoming you here again at The Halls Norwich, in 2019. We hope you enjoy your time at the Norwich Beer Festival and we will see you in February!

Music at the festival is already booked; details will be forthcoming in the next few weeks and involves some new bands and old favourites.

Craig Harmer Festival Organiser

W EL C O M E

Hello! I wish you all a warm welcome to the 41st Norwich Beer Festival. This is my first time being the Festival Organiser and the first thing I should do is thank Rob Derbridge, the previous organiser. With Norwich Beer Festival being one of the biggest social events in Norwich each year, I am looking forward to continuing the success of our 40th Festival. I believe that a beer festival is a great opportunity to introduce people to real ale or for those that already enjoy it, to try some new beers. We do of course also have the usual large range of real cider along with our marquee housing our World Beer and Keg Bar. We are also continuing to offer a selection of mead and wine, which can be found at the Cider Bar. Next, I would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard work. Whether it’s doing a session or two behind the bar or working all week or helping with the planning (which goes back as far back as January!), the festival wouldn’t function as it does without every single one of them. If you fancy the idea of volunteering at the festival just ask any member of staff about how to get involved. Last year we trialled opening all day on the Saturday. We felt this was a success so we will be continuing it. As well as increasing the gluten free beer that we have available; this year we have decided to add a new bar called the Curiosity Bar. This bar will have a wide range of different ales all new to the festival! There is a limited supply of each so make sure you get some whilst you can! This year’s charity is Headway; who help support brain injury survivors, their families and carers as well as professionals. You can find their stand in the Blackfriars’ bar, so please pay them a visit whilst at Norwich Beer Festival. Thank you for attending and I hope you all enjoy the festival!

10

Ian Stamp N&N CAMRA Chairman As always, this year’s Festival brings you the tried and tested formula of hundreds of beers, ciders and perries from across the country, accompanied by some excellent live bands. But we’ve also (as always!) made some changes, giving the ‘look’ of the Festival a bit of a makeover, adding an expanded range of UK KeyKeg beers in the marquee along with the usual awesome range of foreign beers, and also a new beer bar, the Curiosity Bar, which will be showcasing single casks of around forty new and unusual beers we hope will tickle your taste buds! Both the new bar and Blackfriars will feature cooling for the first time, in order to ensure we present the beers in the best condition possible. While the cold of late October and the fast turnover of the beer has generally been sufficient to keep the beer in the 1014C ideal range, we can’t always rely on it, and have taken on the additional work involved in setup and takedown (plug – if you can help at all before or after the Festival, we need all the help we can get!). We can’t physically see how we can use cooling in St Andrews, but will be monitoring beer temperatures constantly, and haven’t had any complaints in the past! So please enjoy the Festival and give generously to our charity this year. Headway were founded in 1979 to provide support and services to survivors of head and brain injuries, and their families. Finally, I’d like to thank all the volunteers who give their time to organise and staff the Festival every year. We’re always looking for more help, as we’re none of us getting younger – if you’d like to volunteer for a session or two, please just speak to any steward or other volunteer, or contact staffing@norwichbeerfestival. org.uk

A bunch of rovers squeezing musical joy out of a guitar, harmonica, double bass and percussion: A mixture of Irish Folk, Punk and Americana they sure get you jigging around. You can also often see them busking on the streets of Norwich.

The Cambridgeshire Cider Competition took place at Cambridge Beer Festival, the Hertfordshire Cider Competition took place at Hitchin Beer & Cider Festival, and the Essex Cider Competition took place at Chelmsford Summer Beer & Cider Festival. Naturally, the Norfolk Cider Competition will be held here at Norwich, along with Suffolk & Bedfordshire competitions. As there are far fewer perry makers in East Anglia, all East Anglian perries will be judged here at Norwich. The winners of the East Anglian Cider & Perry Competitions will go forward to CAMRA's National Cider & Perry Championships to be held in May. We have high hopes in light of recent successes!

Each cider & perry on offer will have been graded for sweetness, and this will be indicated on the notices for each product. Here in Norwich, we use the 13 point scale, where 1 is the sweetest, 7 is a medium, and 13 is the driest possible. Along with the grading, taste and appearance attributes such as Sharp, Tannic, Fruity, Clear and Cloudy, will also be indicated. Where a cider or perry is made with a single variety of apple or pear, it will be indicated with "(SV)" at the end of the product name. Please ask the bar staff if you need help deciding, or have any questions, however, when it is busy, we will have less time to help. Please be aware that traditional ciders and perries typically have higher alcohol content than most of the commercial cider you get in pubs or supermarkets, so please drink responsibly and enjoy your time at the festival.

Here at Norwich Beer Festival, we'll be once again concentrating on East Anglian ciders & perries. We'll have ciders from new cider makers as well as established makers. Over the last few years, East Anglian cider makers have won a string of national CAMRA awards. This year, at CAMRA's National Cider & Perry Championships held in May, Whin Hill's

Brown's Cider won National Silver and Whin Hill's Perry won National Bronze. Both awards very well deserved!

PER R Y

R

eal cider and perry have been enjoyed in Britain since Roman times. Many people have discovered the delights of these traditional drinks and the rich world of flavours they offer. While methods of production have benefited from modernisation, the basics still stay the same: pick, press, ferment, enjoy! Cider and perry made using these traditional methods is unpasteurised, uncarbonated and full of natural flavour. The taste can be any combination of mellow, aromatic, tangy, sharp, fruity, or tannic, as well as being sweet, medium or dry. These are real flavours, not masked by cold temperature or fizz! All of the well known 'industrial' ciders are not recognised by CAMRA as real traditional cider or perry.

Wassail! If you want to make great cider, be sure to practice your wassailing. The English custom, used to appease the deities of the apple trees, was believed necessary to ensure healthy crops. Here's how to honor the spirits: Place a jug of cider or piece of cider-soaked toast on the biggest apple tree. Then sing a chant or song. Finish by banging on kettles and blowing horns to scare away any evil spirits lingering in your orchard. It's that easy.

Mild

Mild is one of the most traditional beer styles which is usually dark brown in colour, due to the use of well-roasted malts or barley. It is less hopped than bitters and often has a chocolaty character with nutty and burnt flavours. Mild is a beer which has tastes and textures all of its own. Darker milds are produced from darker malts and/or roasted barley. However, not all milds are dark. Milds tend to have an ABV in the 3% to 3.5% range, with of course some notable exceptions.

Bitter

Bitter falls into the 3.4% to 3.9% band, with Best Bitter 4% upwards but a number of brewers label their ordinary Bitters ‘Best'. A further development of Bitter comes in the shape of Extra or Special Strong Bitters of 5% or more. With ordinary Bitter, look for a spicy, peppery and grassy hop character, a powerful bitterness, tangy fruit and juicy and nutty malt. With Best and Strong Bitters, malt and fruit character will tend to dominate but hop aroma and bitterness are still crucial to the style, often achieved by ‘late hopping' in the brewery or adding hops to casks as they leave for pubs

Light Bitters

We define light bitters as any bitter with an ABV of 3.4% or lower and they do also tend to be lighter in colour than stronger bitters.

Golden Ales

Strengths will range from 3.5% to 5.3%. The hallmark will be the biscuity and juicy malt character derived from pale malts, underscored by tart citrus fruit and peppery hops, often with the addition of hints of vanilla and cornflour. Golden ales are pale amber, gold, yellow or straw coloured and above all, such beers are quenching and served cool

Pale Ale or IPA

Look for juicy malt, citrus fruit and a big spicy, peppery bitter hop character, with strengths of 4% upwards.

Porter or Stout

Look for profound dark and roasted malt character with raisin and sultana fruit, espresso or cappuccino coffee, liquorice and molasses, all underscored by hefty hop bitterness. Porters are complex in flavour, range from 4% to 6.5% and are typically black or dark brown; the darkness comes from the use of dark malts unlike stouts which use roasted malted barley. Stouts can be dry or sweet and range from 4% to 8% ABV.

Barley Wine

Barley Wine is often strong – usually between 10% and 12% -- and was stored for prodigious periods of as long at 18 months or two years. Expect massive sweet malt and ripe fruit of the pear drop, orange

and lemon type, with darker fruits, chocolate and coffee if darker malts are used. Hop rates are generous and produce bitterness and peppery, grassy and floral notes

Old Ale

Darker versions will have a more profound malt character with powerful hints of roasted grain, dark fruit, polished leather and fresh tobacco. The hallmark of the style remains a lengthy period of maturation, often in bottle rather than bulk vessels. Old Ales typically range from 4% to 6.5%.

Vegan & Vegetarian The key ingredient that determines whether a beer is vegetarian/ vegan or not is finings. Finings are used to clarify beer, by pulling yeast sediment to the bottom of the cask. These are usually made from isinglass, an extract from the swim bladder of the sturgeon fish. Although the finings drop to the bottom of the cask with the yeast and are not consumed, the use of an animal product to produce the beer is objected to by strict vegetarians and vegans. Some brewers don't fine their beers, which may mean the beer turns out hazy or cloudy in the glass. Others use finings made from seaweed, but this is mostly confined to bottled beer usage. If a beer has been certified as vegan it should appear marked in the beer listings with a .

41ST NORWICH BEER FESTIVAL Photo: Julie Chettleburgh

41ST NORWICH BEER FESTIVAL orn in Ireland, raised in Yorkshire and then later Birkenhead, Davey never knew his parents. Although therefore not strictly a Liverpudlian, Davey was happy to be known as a “scouser”. Davey first found employment as a “trailer boy” with Pickfords heavy haulage. As most of their work was involved hauling machinery for the ship-building industry it was not unnatural that the call of the sea became strong in him eventually leading him to gain his Masters Certificate in the Merchant Navy. However, he often told of how he never actually went to sea as he spent his maritime career on the Mersey Ferry! Due to marital problems Davey left his wife and children to start a new life in Norwich. Here he became a well know character around the city not only through his love of real ale and pubs. At one time he was a bus driver for Eastern Counties Omnibus Co. but almost got the sack as he arrived early back at the bus station not having picked up any passengers! “When I drove buses in Liverpool” he explained” folk stick their hand out for a bus – no-one here did that so I just kept going!” Later Davey became a guard on the trains out of Norwich which earned him his nick-name, as at the Black Country Museum (where he was a volunteer for over 30 years) there were already two Dave’s down at the canal basin – Dave the Boat, and Dave the Bus. Hence Davey became Dave the Train!

DAVID CHARLES CLEVERLEY 1945-2018 By Peter Wells

David Cleverley (known to one and all as Dave/Davey the Train) sadly passed away (from “natural causes”) alone in his flat in Norwich towards the end of July. However, on a bright August morning he was far from alone as he was laid to rest in Norwich Cemetery surrounded by over 90 of his friends representing the many lives he touched and the hobbies he enjoyed. From Ellesmere Port to Sheringham, from Bristol to the Black Country, Davey was known to a great many people. 40

norwichcamra.org.uk CAMPAIGNING FOR REAL ALE, PUBS AND DRINKERS’ RIGHTS SINCE 1971

Due to two “fatal incidents” while he was a guard Davey was given early retirement on grounds of stress which enabled him to fully indulge in his passions of cycling, lifeboats, pubs/real ale and lastly (but most importantly) narrowboats and canals. Until the withdrawal of accommodation at the “Brook Street flat” within the Black County Museum, Davey assisted Nigel Jackson, Jo Gilbert, Dave Parry and others with the major restoration of the narrowboats “Stour” and “Lynx”. On the wider canal network, Davey also assisted another Davey (Davey Jones) with crewing “Starling”, crewed the steam narrowboat “President” and assisted Bernard Hales on “Enterprise No.1”. Davey also drove the buses, trams and trolleybuses at the museum at various times. He was also a fund-raiser for the wooden narrowboat “Raymond”. If anyone mentioned to Davey that they were going canalling he would always come out with one of his “Golden Rules”. Always sound advice, they were never the same “golden rule”! I am sure

that if I had written down all the “golden rules” told to me they would form quite a handy booklet! Davey was also a keen cyclist and organised a number of “breakfast” cycle runs based around the “Reindeer” pub when it was owned by the late Wolfe Whitham. In later years he gained a love of trade bikes and was a familiar sight delivering the local CAMRA magazines to pubs in Norwich attired in his usual shorts and sandals – even in the depths of winter! Davey was heavily involved in fund-raising for two local lifeboats – the volunteer run Caisteron-Sea lifeboat and the RNLI Sheringham based lifeboat. At the Sheringham lifeboat shop he even set up his trade-mark “tea stall” for the benefit of those working there. Davey was also involved in the local branch of CAMRA and regularly drove lorries for the annual Norwich Beer Festival. During the week he would be on the “glasses and tokens” stand near the entrance where once again he would set up his “tea-stall” for the benefit of his fellow volunteers. For those working at the “beer store” (out of sight from the thousands who enjoy the beer fests) Dave would rustle up his legendary fried breakfasts. Cooking was something he really enjoyed and often bought along home baked cakes for all to enjoy. In pursuit of the elusive “best pint ever” Davey was a familiar sight at the annual North Norfolk Railway Beer Festival and also the annual Straw Bear Festival in Whittlesey. Here he would indulge his passion for an early Wetherspoons’ breakfast together with his love of folk dancing and folk music. It was at one of the Norwich Beer Festivals that Davey came up with the idea of an award for the volunteer who did the stupidest thing – to be known as the “Knob of the Festival” Award. The idea was taken up with enthusiasm by the volunteers although no-one was too surprised when Davey became the first recipient of the award! In fact, he went on to win this award on two further occasions – a fact of which he was quite proud! In later years Davey had not enjoyed the best of health (it was never a good idea to ask how he was!) but would always have a (usually terrible) joke to tell you. Never rude and rarely funny - but then that was Davey the Train. RIP my friend.

OUR VOLUNTEERS Over the last 40 years we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of volunteers that help out at the Norwich Beer Festival. From helping wash glasses to serving drinks, to working on the stewarding team to signing up new members. There are many different voluntary roles that all support the Beer Festival in taking place. Some people return to working at the beer festival for many years (some for all!) and return each year to the same role whereas others will explore the different roles that are on offer. Some of the roles are explained below: On the bar

Working on the bar brings you up close and personal to the beers that are on offer and whilst working a trade session gives you the chance to potentially meet the brewers that made a particular beverage or a pub which sells it. It also provides you with the knowledge to be able to discuss with the public the beers on offer

Steward

As Stewards our primary job is to ensure the

GREAT FOOD SERVED ALL WEEK WEEKEND BREAKFASTS SUNDAY ROASTS

Working on the Membership stand can give you the opportunity to meet new people and introduce them to the wonderful world that is CAMRA. There are more roles available and if you are interested in helping out, please ask any of the volunteers you see working or email staffing@norwichcamra. org.uk So, why do our amazing volunteers help out, you may ask and where do we find them? We have volunteers that are local and some come from further afield. We have Bar Managers from Barnsley, Cellar Team staff from America, Bar Staff from Suffolk, Stewards from Wales plus more who travel! We’ve been described as making new volunteers feel welcome to a beer festival with “lovely, friendly people, a fantastic venue and an amazing atmosphere”. We fully embrace individuality and enjoy when our bar staff have their fancy dress days! Helping volunteer at the Norwich Beer Festival makes you feel a part of the community and everyone makes you feel like you belong.

41ST NORWICH BEER FESTIVAL

BELGIUM DRAUGHT

World Beer & Keg Bar H

ello to all of our Norwich Beer Festival visitors, from the ‘festival in a festival’. The World Beer and Keg Bar (note the name change) began as one table, the idea of Wendy and Ray Parker. They ordered a few beers from Beers of Europe with the idea that they may have to return some, instead they had to pop back for more. Under the care of Keith Loney the bar grew beyond expectations, leading the way in brining to Norfolk some exceptional beers, including the only festival to have the rare De Garre triple. Only three years ago this mantle was passed to me and my growing team of volunteers. This is why I now say we are a ‘festival in a festival’. My great thanks for all their support go to a Cellar team led by Olly and a Front of House team under the occasionally eccentric care of Lisa and Martine. All respectfully referred to as Cheryl’s Chouffes (Gnomes in Flemish). This year the marquee will be hosting a forever expanding range of beers. We have increased to fourteen taps and this year we feature beers from Germany (via Wales), Czech Republic (via London), Suffolk (it is over the border), Belgium, USA, Poland, France and Italy as well as many more. If you are a fan of fruit beers you will find a range of new flavours we would like to tantalise you with. As anyone who knows me is aware I adore Trappist beers and we have continued this with our mission to have a beer from every Trappist, including Tyne Meadow the first

More thanks need to be given to our sponsors, The Belgian Monk. Terry and his team deserve medals for helping me to achieve a lot of my wish list. I would also like to thank Erik from Geipel an exceptional microbrewery brewery in rural North Wales specialising in traditionally brewed lagers (well Erik is German). These beers are never fined, filtered or pasteurised. It is with his help that we have our very special UK keg selection from North Wales and Manchester. These include, Wild Horse, Loka Polly and Heavy Industry. Added to this selection we have Bohem, Zdenek’s Czech Brewery based in London. Continuing in this line of thanks we also have Calvors and Blimey for the loan of equipment, my husband Mark for assisting me on our beer tours where we meet the brewers, and have the hard task of sampling the beer.
