NORWICH CITY FOOTBALL CLUB CARROW ROAD Bailey XI vs Jossa XI

We’ve hit a special landmark today, as this will be the fifth Jamie’s Game that the Community Sports Foundation(CSF) and Sellebrity Soccer have hosted here at Norwich City Football Club. The hero and namesake of the game is (a now not so young!) Jamie Abbott, who was chosen to be the figurehead of the game back when it all began in 2013, and he’ll be here today once again. Of course, the game isn’t just about Jamie - it’s about all the disadvantaged and disabled people in Norfolk that benefit from the charity’s work, and will continue to do so thanks to your support today.

Since it all began, Jamie’s Game has raised nearly a quarter of a million pounds for the Foundation and that is a figure we’re extremely proud of. Just a few of the individuals whose lives have benefited from this sum are featured on page 14 - read their stories and be inspired. All our celebs give up their time free of charge to play for this great cause - you’ll recognise some returning favourites, as well as a host of debutants and Norwich City legends all eager to sample the famous Jamie’s Game match atmosphere! A huge thanks to our sponsors Fisher Healthcare Ltd, Errea, 4Sports Group and CMB Media - your support is invaluable. We hope you enjoy the day.

I started to slip back into old habits and didn’t see a way out. It was the support of the Street Life Soccer (SLS) programme that got me through, the lads encouraged me to keep strong and supported me. Now I am enjoying my football a lot more, I have got a lot fitter and this Summer I was selected to represent England at St George’s Park National Football Centre as part of The Street Football Association. I played various fixtures there, stayed in luxury accommodation and met a lot of great people who I’m still in touch with. I experienced things I never thought I would before. My confidence has been built up so much that last month, I stood up and spoke about my life and the progress I’ve made in front of an audience of people. My life is finally back on track and I can’t wait to play for England once again at the Manchester International Cup this November.

At age 7 I was diagnosed with a mild form of Cerebral Palsy (CP). The diagnosis helped me and my family make more sense of what was wrong and gave us a starting point to move forward. When I found out about CSF’s CP sessions, I was keen to give them a try, I felt so welcomed and have been attending ever since. I really like that I am not rushed and can do things at my own time and pace. I like the help the coaches give me and that I get a chance to play in a properly organised match each week. It has helped me feel more confident and I always look forward to going. I am a massive Norwich City FC fan and in the summer I got the chance to train on the Carrow Road pitch with the first team. It was such a great day!

I was heading down a path of destruction, my marriage was over and I was broken-hearted.

The Community Sports Foundation (CSF) helps over 38,000 people every year achieve their goals through sport, supporting some of the most disadvantaged, disabled and talented people across Norfolk. Here are the stories of five participants who have been supported by the Foundation.

James

James, Street Life Soccer participant.

I would often come home from school upset and distressed that I could not keep up with my friends.

When I was in school, I focused on getting good grades so that I could go to college and study something I really wanted to do. I always wanted to be involved in sport and I had a passion to play football but with that said, I had no clue what steps to take. When I finished college, CSF opened its doors to me, I joined the Street Life Soccer programme which helps vulnerable people and through this, I found out about the Futsal Scholarship Programme. This course gave me the opportunity to play football as well as study a BTEC Level 3 in Sport. Soon, I started volunteering for Kicks and the Boys’ PDC which gave me the chance to start working for CSF. The Foundation has allowed me to grow as a person and not only start my journey in football but continue it, too.

It was difficult at first as I felt different to other children but I did take to the hearing aids really well and was happy to explain what they were to anyone who asked. I started attending CSF’s Hearing Impaired football sessions two years ago and they have helped me to build my confidence and feel part of a team. The sessions are really cool and it’s much more fun with the friends I’ve made. The coaches are the best and I’ve learned so many awesome football skills and tricks. Being part of the Disability PDC has allowed me to go on lots of brilliant trips and take part in activities I never thought I’d get the chance to do. The best was when I visited Carrow Road last month and had the chance to meet and train with some of the Norwich City first team squad - it was an absolute dream come true!

Things started to look up, my family wanted to get to know me again and I started volunteering for St Martins Housing Trust. I heard about the Community Sports Foundation’s Street Life Soccer (SLS) sessions through them and asked if women could come along too. I’ve always been a footy fan but I’d never actually played until my first session. It was a bit daunting at first but I soon fitted in, all the lads were really welcoming. The exercise really helped to take my mind off my struggles, my confidence improved and I got loads fitter. I’ve even had the opportunity to lead training sessions. I now work as a support worker for St Martin’s, and get to help people who are experiencing similar things to what I have gone through.

In 2010, I had enough. If I didn’t stop the drugs I was going to die.

At the age of nine, I moved from Portugal, my birthplace, to England so that my parents could seek a better future for my family.

Gerson, CSF Community Coach & Futsal Scholar.

I was born with a hearing loss in both ears. It wasn’t until I was four years old that I was diagnosed and fitted with two hearing aids.

I grew up with a lot of fighting going on at home and ended up on the streets when I was 15. I was in and out of prison and started doing heroin, committing street robberies to get my fix.

15 questions with...

Dan “

Playing football in front of thousands of people is an incredible experience… It’s a pleasure to see Jamie there on the day too, he always has a big smile on his face.

28

Ex-TOWIE star and Jamie’s Game star Dan Osborne talks Jamie’s Game, tattoos and his fellow celebs!

Who’s your favourite team? I’m an Arsenal fan, and always have been because my family on my dad’s side are all Arsenal. I love the club, but loved them more in 2004! Just kidding! Who is your footballing hero and why? Dennis Bergkamp. I just think he was different class. Every Arsenal shirt I had growing up had Bergkamp on the back. He was just an unbelievable player! In three words, how would you describe your style of play? Goals, strength & composure. This’ll be your fourth Jamie’s Game - what keeps you coming back? It’s an amazing, fun day and playing football in front of thousands of people is an incredible experience. But the reason we are all there is

What sets playing at Carrow Road apart from the other grounds you’ve played at? The ground is beautiful and it’s an unreal pitch to play on too. But the atmosphere is really what makes it stand out, you really can feel that everyone is having a great day. Jamie’s Game has raised around a £1/4 million for the Foundation’s work with disabled and disadvantaged individuals in Norfolk since it began. How does it feel to have contributed towards this? That’s an incredible amount! It feels great, but I’ve just taken one day a year out of my time to come and help out, which is the least I can do. The hard work is all from you guys at the Foundation working all year round, organising these kind of events. It’s amazing what you guys have done, you should be seriously proud. Great charity! because we all know what we are raising money for & the Norwich City Community Sports Foundation is incredible for what they do. It’s a pleasure to see Jamie there on the day too, he always has a big smile on his face. Your best moment on the Jamie’s Game pitch? My favourite moment was probably flip-flapping Dean Ashton then scoring. Sorry, Dean! Who’s the best celebrity footballer you’ve played with or against? The best celeb I’ve played with is probably midfield maestro Tubes. He is a great player!

And the best ex-pro footballer? Definitely Darren Huckerby - what a player! Whisper it quietly: who is the worst celebrity footballer you’ve played with? Haha, I really don’t really want to answer this! If I was pushed, I’d go for Stevi Ritchie. Love that he comes and gives it his all though, he is a really lovely guy! Why did you have to ask that!? đ&#x;˜‚

What are your impressions of Norfolk and Norwich? Have you been able to visit much? I have been up quite a few times and

I’ve loved it every time. The people are always very friendly and I’ve met some really great people. If you weren’t a celeb, what would you be doing? To be honest, probably just what I’m doing now! I’m opening up my own tattoo studio this year which I’m very excited about. Tattooing is something I love doing and right from the moment I tattooed someone I’ve wanted to open my own studio. Finally, I am realising that dream! đ&#x;˜Š Describe your perfect day off My perfect day off is just spending time with my children and my fiancĂŠe (wife soon) đ&#x;˜Š And finally, you’re the top goalscorer with eight goals at Jamie’s Game. Will you break the ten mark this year, Dan? I hope so! I certainly want to stay top goal scorer that’s for sure! đ&#x;˜„

Which celebrity would you most like to play football with? Erm, I’m not sure really! There are lots of ex-pros I’d love to play footy with, but celebrity.. probably Brooklyn Beckham, because hopefully his Dad would fancy a game too!

“We have supported the Foundation for a number of years through offering a collection pot in the van. This year we were inspired to take on the Norwich half marathon and raised over £500.” Peter & Kirsty, Cafe2U Cafe2U also give their services for free at the annual Coastal Walk Challenge.

For futher information please contact csf.fundraising@canaries.co.uk or call 01603 761122

Special thanks too to our supporter groups the Pink Un’ Pickers and the Norwich City Fans Social Club! 33
