Your Norwich: Community
NCS Summer comes to a close PARTICIPANTS RAISE THOUSANDS FOR LOCAL CHARITIES This summer, over 750 young people participated in the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme with the Community Sports Foundation (CSF) and undertook a range of social-action projects with the aim of raising awareness and funds for local charities. From coffee mornings to quiz nights, the teenagers had their hands full as they took part in 60 hours of voluntary work, following two weeks of residential trips and team-building activities. The youngsters raised an impressive £14,000 for 23 local charities including the Community Sports Foundation, Clic Sergeant and Nelson’s Journey.
DEAN ASHTON GOLF DAY 2016 Sixty golfers joined Dean Ashton for the fourth annual Community Sports Foundation (CSF) Charity Golf Day earlier this month, which was held at The Marriott Sprowston Manor.
The event raised over £3,000 for the Foundation which will help to support disabled and disadvantaged people across Norfolk. The event allowed golfers to track their progress throughout the day using an electronic live scoring app, ‘GDScore’, who coincidentally provided the winning team made up of Ben Phillips, Adam Saunders, Joe Lambert and Nick Barrett.
Working with Diss Town Council, some of the participants organised a ‘flash mob’ in the town centre while a Norwich-based group showcased their talents with a live music performance in the city centre. In Wymondham, one of the groups picked up their paint brushes and gardening tools as they spent the week decorating homeless shelters and revamping the communal areas of a care home.
NCS Project Officer Paul Sykes said: “The social-action projects have provided an excellent opportunity for the young people to develop valuable team-building and communication skills. The programme has allowed the participants to donate a lot of hours to a variety of community projects and raise a significant amount of money for local charities - this is brilliant to see.” Following the completion of the programme, the young people celebrated their fantastic achievements at four graduation events throughout August. More than 275,000 young people have already said ‘Yes’ to NCS. Are you 15-17 years old? NCS is a oncein-a-lifetime experience and starts up again this Autumn half-term.
The evening events kicked off with a premium buffet followed by a raffle and auction. With sporting memorabilia, a free round of golf and a signed, match-worn Norwich City shirt among some of the prizes on offer, everyone dug deep to raise funds for the Foundation. Emma Fletcher, Charity Fundraising Officer, said: “It was a marvellous day, the sun didn’t stop shining and everyone enjoyed the golf and the chance to support the charity. I am delighted with how much we have raised and with some wonderful support from our sponsors we have hosted another charitable day where everyone has had a good time. “Thank you to Dean for being such
an excellent host once again. I’d also like to thank Sprowston Manor Golf Club for their fantastic hospitality plus all the businesses and hole sponsors that backed the event and made it possible including main sponsors Fisher Healthcare Training.”
