Dear Norwood-Fontbonne Academy, From the President

All of us at Norwood-Fontbonne are happy to bring you our latest edition of The Good News. This past spring, there was great excitement on campus with the news that NFA was awarded a $400,000 grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to improve and enhance the landscape and outdoor environment on the Fontbonne campus. This transformational award will allow us to reimagine our outdoor spaces over the next three years as we implement the campus plan created as a component of our strategic plan, Directed Toward Tomorrow. We will begin by prioritizing projects and refining design. Improvements will include pathways, entry piers, soil conservation, sustainability and facilities for learning and recreation. We will keep all of our stakeholders informed of our progress. Simultaneously, we will continue campus construction projects already in progress this fall, including improvements to the exterior of the Norwood Campus as well as phase one of our Treasure the Earth trail and outdoor learning space.

“Desire to embrace the whole world with the fire of God’s great dream.” Maxim 7

We expanded our Montessori partnership with Chestnut Hill College this fall as we hosted a college-level teacher training class taught by our very own Dr. Monica Walsh on our campus. We are excited that this collaboration will also allow for parent workshops and professional development opportunities for our staff. We will also collaborate this year on parent workshops and professional development opportunities. This school year also marks the 50th anniversary of the unification of Norwood Academy and Fontbonne Academy into a single coeducational school under the leadership of Sister James Anthony. The pioneering spirit of S. James Anthony, SSJ, continues to inspire us today. As our school continues to grow and thrive, we honor the legacy of our founders and leaders throughout our history. Most importantly, as we enter this new school year, we renew our commitment to fulfilling the mission and vision of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. In Christ’s Peace,

Ryan Killeen, Ed.D. President

Class Notes Jonathan Burton ’94: History Preserved Annual Report to Investors From the Principal’s Desk: 10 Things You’ll Want to Know about NFA

The Good News | Fall/Winter 2023 5

Why I Teach Marianne Canuso

4th Grade Teacher (22nd Year)

Why do you love teaching at NFA?

NFA is my home away from home. I enjoy working with amazing students, families, and colleagues.

What are your favorite traditions at NFA? My favorite NFA traditions are Advent Angels for students and staff and the Christmas Liturgy. What kind of influence do you feel you have over your students? I hope to encourage my students to be the best version of themselves. I challenge them to develop their unique skills and talents as they build their future selves. What inspired you to become a teacher and what inspires you to return each fall? I was inspired to

6 Norwood-Fontbonne Academy

become a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in a child’s life. I wanted each of my students to believe in themselves and feel loved and heard. I have returned to NFA again after 21 years because I am excited to make learning meaningful and fun for my students. I look at every new school year as a fresh start and an opportunity for me to improve my teaching and try new things.

How do you see the NFA Student Vision Statement playing out each day? My students live out the NFA Student Vision Statement each day by enjoying their learning and working collaboratively and respectfully with others.

Maya Tippett ’04 Junior Level Montessori Teacher (10th Year)

Why do you love teaching at NFA? There are many things to love about NFA, but what truly makes us special is the community. Having people that support and understand you makes every day, even the worst days, seem more manageable.

What kind of influence do you feel you have over your students? I hope that my influence over my students is one of encouragement, guidance, and support. I believe in being firm, but gentle in my instruction and my classroom management. I want my students to question everything, but to learn how to do it in a constructive and appropriate way. What inspired you to become a teacher and what inspires you to return each fall? I have always been around classrooms, because of my mother. I started coaching, babysitting, and tutoring when I was in high school. It wasn’t long

before my simple high school jobs became a passion, which led to a degree that eventually brought my path back to NFA. It is the students that bring me back each fall. Their spirit and curiosity and humor make every day fun and exciting. I love being able to learn with them, and from them as much as they learn from me.

How do you see the NFA Student Vision Statement playing out each day? I see them living it in their actions, their efforts, and their words. I see their love of learning when they eagerly rush over to show you a work that they have completed. I see them treasuring themselves, others, and the Earth when they offer help to a friend. I see them living Gospel values when they see something wrong happening and immediately want to know how they can help. And I see them act as self-directed learners every day in making their work choices.

George Clark

7th/8th Grade Math & 8th Grade Social Studies Teacher (16th Year) Why do you love teaching at NFA? I enjoy getting to know the students and watching them grow all the way to their graduation day. What are your favorite traditions at NFA? My favorite tradition at NFA is the last day before Christmas. The day is so special from our Christmas Liturgy, the Christmas Tea, and special activities. It’s a great way to go into the Christmas holiday. What kind of influence do you feel you have over your students?

I would like to think that I am showing students how to prepare and do what it takes to be successful going into high school.

What inspired you to become a teacher and what inspires you to return each fall? I wanted to do something more than put money into other people’s pockets. It is a privilege to watch young people grow and succeed. How do you see the NFA Student Vision Statement playing out each day? I hope each day that students will learn to treasure each other and make better choices that affect them and our world.

What are your favorite traditions at NFA? My favorite NFA traditions are the ones that bring families in to see our community. From large events like the Ice Cream Social or Family Fun Night, or the smaller in-school events, like class presentations.

NFA Awarded $400,000 LSA Grant On May 30, 2023, State Representative Tarik Khan and Senator Art Haywood presented NFA with a Local Share Account Grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the amount of $400,000 to support enhancements and improvements to the Fontbonne Campus. To receive the grant, NFA was sponsored by PIDC, Philadelphia’s public-private economic development corporation. “All of us in the NFA community are deeply grateful and energized by this transformational opportunity to enhance our campus, improve the student learning experience, and support sustainable practices in our environment,” said Dr. Ryan Killeen, President of NFA. Khan, who visited campus earlier in the school year, and Haywood are incredibly excited to partner with NFA and very complimentary of the high standard NFA has set over the years. “For over 100 years, NorwoodFontbonne Academy and the Sisters of Saint Joseph have been helping to form leaders who are self-driven and socially responsible,” said Rep. Khan. “We know there are examples throughout the community,

Haywood. “This is a great environment for learning.” Enhancements on the Fontbonne Campus will include: walkways, pathways, entry piers, lighting, signage, landscaping, soil conservation, and outdoor learning and recreational resources. “The commitment and engagement of Representative Khan and Senator Haywood is such a blessing,” said Killeen. “The terms of the LSA grant restrict spending to our outdoor spaces on the Fontbonne campus. enhancements to the Fontbonne Campus, including: new pathways, nature trails, enhanced outdoor learning and recreation, lighting, signage, and environmental conservation. We are thrilled that these funds will help us realize incredible dreams to support our students on their academic journey and kick off the next phase of implementation of the NFA Campus Plan.” The grant funding period will be from Summer 2023 to Summer 2026. This initiative was grown out of the NFA Strategic Plan, Directed Toward Tomorrow, and the comprehensive campus plan created through that process. These outdoor initiatives help NFA fulfill its mission and vision. As the Student Vision states: “A Norwood-Fontbonne Academy student is one who treasures self, others, and the Earth.”

The Class of 2025 hosted the school’s first-ever water summit on May 22, 2023 in the Sister James Anthony Hall Gym. The historic summit was the culmination of a combined year-long Media Studies & Religion unit led by Dr. Megan Stotz, Technology Integration Specialist, and Ally Monteiro, former Director of Mission & Ministry. The unit focused on Goal 6 of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Goal 6 aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Over the course of the year, students built empathy by listening to stories from around the world of communities that lack clean water, were introduced to the goals and principles of a non-profit organization, discussed the connection between the two, then

NFA Water Summit worked towards exploring solutions, and encouraging action by building a solution. For their final project, students came together in teams (countries) to create a non-governmental organization with completed marketing and branding materials (logos, stickers, brochures, videos, etc.). Each team had to research and identify water issues within their assigned country, and then build a prototype to fix the issues. Students then had to pitch their ideas to “the bank” to receive grant money. After receiving funding, students then identified products they needed in the “Stotz Shop,” but had to stay within budget. Students had the opportunity to share all of their work during the May summit. “Students loved every minute of the project,” said Stotz. “At first I was worried, ‘Are they really going to

Junior Level Montessori teacher Elizabeth Maloney ’07 attended World Youth Day in Lisbon, Portugal during the summer of 2023. She “brought” the NFA community along by documenting her amazing journey online. One highlight of the trip was when she was just feet from Pope Francis. Dr. Stotz Awarded a Toshiba Foundation Grant NFA received a $3,698 STEM grant from the Toshiba America Foundation thanks to the amazing work of Dr. Megan Stotz, Technology Integration Specialist and Media Studies teacher. With these funds, Stotz purchased 3D printers and a hydroponic grower for The Loft, NFA’s makerspace, to support her Interdisciplinary Project-Based Curriculum with Sustainable Development Goals, STEM, and Media Studies project.

Let’s Go BEARS! In NFA’s illustrious 103-year history, the school has never had a formal athletic mark, so with great excitement, we present a suite of new athletic marks created during this re-branding project. “These marks will support our efforts in further branding NFA to the larger Philadelphia area, particularly our storied studentathletic experience,” said Dr. Ryan Killeen, President of NFA. “We hope to see all members of the NFA community donning our new athletic marks this school year!”

Introducing The Bear Den

Name our Bear

Thanks to the hard work of the Class of 2023, NFA will soon open a school store inside the Big House on the Norwood Campus, lovingly named The Bear Den. NFA’s newest graduates identified a number of needs on campus and through the 8th Grade Legacy Gift tradition, the Class of 2023 brought the idea of a school store to life. Students worked with members of

the Mission Advancement Office to identify how the store should be run and what products it should sell. During the summer of 2023, NFA’s facilities department remodeled a first floor room of the Big House to be more store friendly. The physical store will also be accompanied by an online store. 50 Years of

Snowball Fun

Ask any graduate what they remember most about their time at NFA and you’re bound to hear about the legendary Snowball Tournament, an annual tradition which brings the entire community together during some of the coldest days of the year. Open up an old photo album and you’re right back in the stands of Sister James Anthony Hall on a packed Friday night. The smell of pork sandwiches wafts from the snack bar and Tom Utescher is writing up a doozy of an article for The Chestnut Hill Local while Sid MacLeod’s voice is bouncing off the walls in between the ball popping off the floor. Incredibly, the Snowball Tournament, a basketball tournament for local middle school and CYO teams, will turn 50 this February. While the event itself has changed over the years, its essence is still all about community, fun, and, of course, basketball.

in 1973 by Pete Mendoza, who was the varsity basketball coach at the time. Mendoza was looking for a way to engage local middle school teams during the winter break. Inspired by the holiday tournaments at The Palestra, Mendoza brought that model to the local youth sports scene. The 1973 tournament featured NFA, Seven Dolors, Our Mother of Consolation, St. Coleman, Immaculate Conception, Holy Cross, and St. Philip Neri. NFA defeated St. Philip, 58–41, in the final game. Behind the scenes, MacLeod did the announcing and statistics, Bill Buchanan kept the scorebook, and Jim Burton served as the Athletic Director. NFA returned to the final in 1974, but lost to St. Denis, 41–29. Fast forward to 1983, Chuck Seaton took over the tournament and added a girls tournament to the event. Dedicated to NFA, Seaton ran the tournament for 13 years relying on a faithful group of volunteers.

The Snowball Tournament was originally known as the Holiday “It was fun,” said Seaton. “Friday night Basketball Tournament. It was started was always a packed house. The boys and girls teams played back to back and there was never an open seat in the house. The biggest thing about it is being able to compete in front of a lot of people.” Over time, the tournament dates shifted from the week in between Christmas and New Year’s Eve to the first week of January. “It was a fun way to spend the week between Christmas and New Year's,” said Anne Porter, a longtime coach and P.E. teacher at NFA. “Celebrating

school and community pride.” The Parents’ Association took over in the early 1990s and the tournament was rebranded as the Snowball Tournament some years later with additional opportunities for JV teams to play as well as for alumni to reconnect and play. Seaton’s favorite memory is when the Bears won the 2012 varsity boys’ bracket. The team itself struggled during the season and didn’t make the playoffs, but found magic that weekend and defeated Immaculate Heart of Mary in the final to win it all. “No one expected it,” said Seaton. “The kids went to the foul line and made their free throws.” And that’s just one of hundreds of stories that will be retold during the 50th anniversary of the NFA Snowball Tournament, which will take place from February 21–25, 2024.

hen Dr. Angel Stout and Scott Wolpert started the 1973–1974 school year, they were surely excited to see some familiar faces. But seeing each other in class…that was a first.

“My first co-ed class was in the third grade, and I remember I had Sister Joan Rosarre. The Sisters were kind, but they also had high expectations of us from the beginning,” Wolpert shared.

In 1973, Norwood Academy for boys and Fontbonne Academy for girls merged, creating what we celebrate today as Norwood-Fontbonne Academy. We had the opportunity to sit down with Stout and Wolpert to learn more about what they remember about the transition, and how they’ve stayed connected to our community in the 50 years since.

Stout and Wolpert also reflected on walking back and forth between the Norwood and Fontbonne campuses for different classes and activities, a tradition that still continues today. They don’t specifically remember being in a class together, but remember being friends, as they still are to this day.

“We started having co-ed classes throughout the third grade, and then we would split back up for various academic subjects,” shares Stout, a longtime supporter of NFA and the owner of Chesheim Dental Associates in Flourtown, PA. Wolpert, an alum himself and the proud parent of two NFA graduates, remembers the same.

“One of our favorite events was always the Snowball Tournament. Christmas break was all about what would happen at the end of the recess: the biggest tournament of the year,” Stout reflected. “All of our parents would volunteer throughout each day of the tournament, and as students we’d spend the whole four-day tournament on campus,” Wolpert

remembers. “I still recall the hot dogs, the tomato pie, and the tiniest little concession stand that all of our parents squeezed into.” Since the merger, Stout and Wolpert have both found ways to stay connected to NFA. “We’ve served on the Board together. We’ve served on the Development Committee together. My kids are patients of Angel’s. We don’t get to see each other every day, but seeing a face from NFA in town is like seeing a family member,” Wolpert shared. In the 50 years since the merger, Norwood-Fontbonne Academy has created new traditions, but many remain the same. This year, we will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Snowball Tournament, as well as the 30th anniversary of the SCRIP Gift Card program. Please join us for one of the many events on campus this year to help us celebrate this milestone.

Jonathan Burton ’94: History Preserved As someone who was intrigued by our nation’s history, Jonathan Burton ’94 has found his professional career path focused on what makes Philadelphia so great: its history. As a student in the Montessori program here at Norwood-Fontbonne Academy, Burton recalls finding himself looking up to the older students in his Junior Level Montessori classes. Taught by Sister Roseann Tribuiani, SSJ, Burton recalls having a naturally competitive spirit and always wanting to be better. He appreciated that his Montessori education allowed him the freedom to explore what his interests were and focus on what he liked. Burton also reflected on his 5th grade English Language Arts classes with Mrs. Miller, who instilled in him a love of learning and reading. “I have always had a competitive spirit since my time at NFA. It’s how I approach projects in my professional career. I would do anything within reason to succeed,” shared Burton as he reflected on how his learning experience at NFA has impacted his professional journey. Following his graduation from La Salle College High School, Burton headed to Baltimore where he studied at Towson University. He then made his return to Philadelphia, where his career and appreciation for the history of the city took root. “I was looking for a job and a place to live and someone my mom knew said that the Powel House Museum was looking for a live-in

site manager. Not only did I find a job, but also a place to live,” shared Burton. For over four years, Burton lived and breathed Powel House as the site manager. During that time, he worked with volunteers and interns and maintained the 18th century house museum and its historic antique collection. Less than four years later, Burton was named Executive Director of The Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks, a role that he held until May of 2019. Burton and his family made the cross-country move for a few years while he obtained his master’s degree in nonprofit leadership and his wife obtained her doctorate degree in advanced renewable energy solutions. Upon returning to Philadelphia in June of 2022, Burton was named Director of Development for the Independence Historical Trust (Trust). The Trust is the philanthropic nonprofit partner to Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. Burton’s biggest endeavor has been raising funds for a $35 million project that was announced in July 2023. The First Bank of the United States, which has been closed off to patrons for nearly a century, was recently awarded $22.2 million from the Great American Outdoors Act. Once the next $6.6 million is raised, the National Historic Landmarks building will be converted to a museum about the early American economy and will be operated by the National Park Service.

16 Norwood-Fontbonne Academy

Burton’s role has also given the city of Philadelphia an opportunity to preserve history and honor Indigenous peoples, which has been an ongoing discussion amongst Philadelphians. “There is a statue of Lenni-Lenape tribal leader, Chief Tamanend, at Front and Market Streets that isn’t easily viewed by pedestrians. So, we are creating a pedestrian friendly plaza at Second and Market Streets and we’re working to make that space more accessible for pedestrians,” Burton shared. He continues, “Outdoor exhibit walls will be curated to honor Chief Tamanend, his role in the peaceful land treaty with William Penn, and all the contributions of the Lenni-Lenape Tribe. So far, we have raised $4 million for the project that is expected to be completed by the semiquincentennial in 2026.” Revered by many as a symbol of peace, Tamanend was named a “Patron Saint of America,” and May 1st was considered “Tamanend Day.” This project is a step in the right direction in honoring those who came before us. Burton is one of many NFA graduates doing amazing work in Philadelphia. It’s evident from his hard work that he loves the city and preserving its illustrious history, and we’re incredibly excited to read more about the interesting projects that he will lead.

From The Principal’s Desk:

Top 10 Things You’ll Want to Hear About NFA! 1. MISSION The Sisters of Saint Joseph mission is what drew me to NFA. Our beautiful mission is all about unity, with relationships lying at the heart of everything. I have never seen a mission so alive as it is on our campus each day.

2. COMMUNITY You really see this mission come to life in the relationships across our school community. Our parents and students are some of the most welcoming and kind people I have ever met.

3. STAFF Our staff is equally welcoming and loving. Watching them interact with their students and each other brings me so much joy.

4. RICH HISTORY & TRADITION We have an incredible history here at NFA and throughout our history, we have established amazing traditions! A few of my favorites are our Ice Cream Social, Egg Drop, and Snowball! There are too many to name, but everyone has a different favorite!

5. CURRICULUM Our mission comes to life even more through our curriculum. Our Curriculum Council, led by our dynamic Director of Curriculum and Innovation, Shannon Craige, continually evaluates and revises our curriculum in order to ensure it is top-notch and prepares our students for success in high school and in the 21st century workforce.

Kathryn Henry, Principal 6. DUAL PATH We are really unique in that we offer a dual path option for families to choose from. Families may opt to enroll in our Montessori program OR our Primary program for ages 3 through 3rd grade. Most schools offer one or the other and we are really proud to offer both.

7. CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP We are officially partnered with Chestnut Hill College not only in that we are both sponsored works of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, but also in our Montessori program. We are the laboratory school for Chestnut Hill College’s Montessori certification program.

8. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! We are nestled in the best community ever! We love our neighbors and are so proud to be a part of the Chestnut Hill community. Our students reap the benefits of us being so close to these incredible establishments.

9. HUGE CAMPUS In addition to being located in such an amazing area of Philadelphia, we are blessed with 14 acres of beautiful land.

10. SPEAKING OF THE OUTDOORS! Outdoor learning is a hallmark of our curriculum and sustainable development goals. On any given day across our gorgeous, sprawling campus, you will find students exploring nature and engaged in learning outdoors. Being classified as a junior arboretum, our students in the primary grades act as junior arborists, tending to and caring for newly planted trees. Elementary students also work in our Children’s Garden.
