Welcome Dear Norwood-Fontbonne Academy Community, As we close the 2021–2022 school year I am filled with gratitude for another successful year and for the incredible community that has built and sustains the thriving and vibrant NorwoodFontbonne Academy community. In this issue of The Good News, the culmination of our 100th Anniversary celebration and the start of our second century. After twelve years of deep dedication and passionate leadership, our Principal, Mrs. Nancy Peluso has retired from NFA. We have been blessed by her steadfast passion for seeing our students grow and succeed. We remain in her debt and wish her all of the greatest blessings in her retirement. After 38 years as a full-time Montessorian, Sister Roseann Tribuani is stepping away from her full-time position. The impact Sister Roseann has had on hearts and minds and the very fabric of NFA is beyond measure. Sister Roseann will continue her ministry at NFA in a newly created role as a mentor in the Montessori program and ambassador to our community. Progress continues on our strategic plan, Directed Toward Tomorrow. The Campus Environment Committee finished its collaboration with Hord, Coplan and Macht on the creation of a comprehensive, innovative campus plan. We will begin initial implementation of the plan this summer with the creation of a new entry vestibule at The Fontbonne Campus, renovation of the Athletics Field House, and expanded outdoor learning spaces. After a comprehensive assessment and redesign of the Office of Mission and Formation we are ready for the launch of an expanded Service-Learning program in the fall. To strengthen communication and a deepened partnership we will launch a new portal and learning management platform supported by Blackbaud later this summer. I look forward to welcoming our new principal, Mrs. Kathryn Henry, to campus later this summer and I know you join me in offering a warm welcome and full support as we embark on the 2022–2023 academic year. Each day at NFA, our community collaborates to continue the mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. We live and work so that all may be united with God and one another. In Christ’s Peace,

Ryan Killeen, Ed.D. President

Nancy Peluso, 12 Memorable Years! In an unpredictable year during an unpredictable stretch of years, one thing is always for certain, and that is that Nancy Peluso will greet you with a warm smile and instantly make you feel welcome to the NFA community. It’s a gift she has been using on local school campuses since 1974. From Philadelphia to Pottstown, Mrs. Peluso has faithfully served in Catholic schools all over the Delaware Valley, and, here at NFA, we are fortunate that Mrs. Peluso decided to spend her final 12 years as our beloved principal, helping us navigate some unchartered waters, including a world pandemic. “I love helping young people to know of their goodness, to believe in themselves and feel successful because of the effort they put into their learning, and to understand that ‘to those who have been given much, much is expected.’ The NFA Vision says it all,” said Mrs. Peluso, who is retiring at the end of the 2021–2022 school year after spending 46 years in education. Aside from a three-year hiatus, Mrs. Peluso has been a mainstay in Catholic schools for close to five decades. A native of Northeast Philadelphia (the Frankford side of Roosevelt Boulevard for locals), and a graduate of St. Martin of Tours and later Little Flower High School, Mrs. Peluso began her career in the Cadet Program at La Salle University. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree from Our Lady of Angels College (now Neumann University) as well as her Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Gwynedd Mercy University. “I was inspired by numerous teachers, but decided to go into education when I entered the Sisters of St. Francis,” said Mrs. Peluso. “I was a Sister for eight years then continued my teaching career as a lay person.” Mrs. Peluso first taught at Our Lady of Consolation School in Tacony before working at St. Benedict’s in Philadelphia, St. Aloysius in Pottstown, St. Stanislaus in Lansdale, and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Doylestown. “I have taught every grade from first to eighth, each for years, and loved each of those levels as I had them,” said Mrs. Peluso, who went on to become an assistant principal at St.Joseph/ St. Robert in Warrington and later served as principal at St. James School in Elkins Park before coming to NFA in 2010. “I consider my coming to NFA a gift,” said Mrs. Peluso. “I was Principal of St. James for seven years and in November, 2009 I was told that the school would close in June of 2010. It was one of the hardest times of my life. With the help of God, all teachers got a position and all students were in new schools by June. One day, an envelope appeared on my desk. Inside was a flyer—an ad for a Director of Lower Grades position at Norwood-Fontbonne Academy. I had never heard of NFA, but when I researched and learned of the vision for students, I was hooked, and the rest is history. After I announced my retirement this year, I finally found out from where that flyer on my desk in Elkins Park came from.” “Mrs. Peluso has generously served the NFA community for twelve years,” said Dr. Ryan Killeen, President of NFA. “Mrs. Peluso is an incredible educator, leader, and friend. Her passion for education, expertise in curriculum development, academic leadership, and deep commitment to the mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph are a gift to Norwood-Fontbonne Academy and to all of us.” 12

EXTRA CREDIT: What will your lasting memories of NFA be? “There were a number of difficult times during my tenure, including Covid. However, I choose to remember all the good: wonderful, dedicated teachers and staff, engaged, happy students, and parents passionate for and dedicated to their children. I choose to make my lasting memory of NFA to be our working as a team to be our best selves for the sake of our families.” What are you thankful for in regard to NFA? “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in a school that is a sponsored work of the Sisters of St. Joseph. The Sisters’ Mission ‘To live and work so that all may be one,’ is my forever goal. The children and my colleagues have supported me and each other. I can only hope that all have felt my unwavering support as well.” What is a memorable quote or verse that you live by? “This is not quite a mantra, but I pray this each morning: Mother God, Father God, Jesus God, Holy Spirit God, God of the Universe – fill me with your love, your grace, your wisdom and understanding, your courage and your strength. Guide my thoughts, my words, my actions so that all that I think, do, and say is loving best.” What does the next page of life look like for you? “I haven’t quite figured out my next steps, but I believe that there is a next path for me. I would be surprised if that journey did not involve education in some way – I’m passionate about all children having a quality education. Also, I am the oldest of eight, mom of three, and mom-mom to two (so far). I want to spend more quality time with family and friends; read; visit the beach. A vacation in Hawaii is on my bucket list!” What will you miss most about NFA? “My decision to retire was made after much prayer and reflection, but my leaving is bittersweet. What’s best about NFA are the relationships developed among staff, students, and families. Those special relationships are what I will miss most.”

Sister Roseann, A Time for Everything If you spend any time paging through old NFA photo albums you’ll surely find more than a few shots of Sister Roseann Tribuani sitting patiently with a group of students as she helps them achieve new academic milestones. To say that Sister Roseann is a master teacher is an understatement. Over the past 38 years, she has positively transformed the lives of countless students that passed through JLA (Junior Level Montessori A) and given them a strong foundation for future successes. “The NFA community will always remain in Sister Roseann’s debt for the incredible impact she has made on our school and the countless lives she has touched,” said Dr. Ryan Killeen, President of NFA, following Sister Roseann’s announcement to retire from her full-time teaching role at NFA in April. “Her expertise, passion for Montessori education and deep commitment to living her faith have shaped the very core of our school. Her 38 years of generous service are remarkable to say the least. Each day. Sister Roseann embodies Maxim 39: ‘Make a wholehearted gift of yourself.’” For Sister Roseann, going into education was something she chose a few years into her career and we are forever grateful that she had the realization to switch professions. “I had a few different part-time job experiences through my high school years,” said Sister Roseann. “After graduation, I worked full-time at a bank in Center City. While I enjoyed all these experiences and learned so much from them, I was seeking something more. I heard about the Cadet Program (part-time student in college and full-time teaching). I decided to try it. Shortly after I started my classes at St. Joseph’s University, I heard of a job opening right in my neighborhood, at Our Lady of the Rosary School. The rest is history. In later years, I realized this was in God’s plan for me. This is where I met the Sisters of St. Joseph up close, and began to fall in love with the ministry of teaching. It was clearly God’s plan for me.” The youngest of five children, Sister Roseann grew up in a Catholic household on North 64th Street in West Philadelphia. She was taught by the Cabrini Sisters at St. Donato Grade School before moving onto West Catholic Girls’ High School. Following her banking career, Sister Roseann earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education from Chestnut Hill College. She later went to went to New York to complete her Montessori training and certification from the Center for Montessori Teacher Education. Sister began her teaching career in 1969 at Our Lady of the Rosary School in Philadelphia. She went on to teach at St. Athanasius School in West Oak Lane, St. Denis School in Manasquan, New Jersey and Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Roxborough before making NFA her home in 1983. In her next role, Sister Roseann will remain a vital member of NFA as a mentor in Montessori education, ambassador and liaison in our partnerships. We are so blessed to have Sister Roseann continue in this newly created role. “Over 38 years I have so much to be grateful for from the NFA Community,” said Sister Roseann. “I have worked with so many amazing and caring staff members over the years. I have been enriched and learned so much from them. They have encouraged, embraced, and shared so much of life with me. The relationships I have formed with both students, family and staff have truly enriched my life. Being able to live the SSJ mission at NFA and pass it on, ‘to live and work so all will be united with God and with one another,’ has been the greatest gift.” TheGoodNews, Summer 2022

EXTRA CREDIT: What do you want the world to know about Montessori education? “Montessori education is a very holistic and relational way of educating students. Students grow in independence, learn to manage their time, become experienced in working in groups, and are given the freedom to explore areas of academics that interest them. The multi-aged environment and being part of the same class for three years has many advantages both for teachers and students. It builds community, encourages mentorships, builds relationships and leadership.” What do you love about teaching and working with young people? “Teaching in a Montessori environment allows me to get to know the students and their families so well since I am with them for three consecutive years. I really love watching how they grow and change and become confident and self-aware of their many gifts over the years. I also enjoy sharing my gifts, stories, and faith with them. It builds our trust and relationships. What do you love about teaching? “I enjoy teaching and working with children, especially 6-9 year olds. They are eager to learn, engaging and fun to be around. I can have many levels of conversation with them.” “Being part of their lives has been a gift, blessing and a privilege for me. I am so very grateful!” What is a memorable quote or verse that you live by? “Do and be your best and God will do the rest.” What does the next page of life look like for you? Dreams? Goals? Passion projects? “As I step into a new chapter of my life, I don’t have specific dreams or plans. I pray that I will be open to God’s desire for me. I’ve learned that God directs my heart to the right paths. ‘I know the plans I have for you, plans for a future full of hope.’ (Jeremiah 29) “I know I will continue to keep my passion for Montessori education alive and share it in new and different ways. I hope to spend more time with family and friends and with God and nature. I will miss the everyday encounters with students and staff, because for me relationships are at the heart of my mission and ministry.” 13

Campus News Ready For Any Good Work NFA students are “ready for any good works,” and this year was no exception. Led by Ally Monteiro, Director of Mission & Formation, students learned in detail about the good work that a number of local organizations are doing in the community while supporting them through food drives and service projects.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

As a sponsored work of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, everything at NFA flows from the belief that “all may be one.” The students feel connected—to God, the school, teachers, and peers—which leads to a strong sense of solidarity within the community and a united commitment to serving others. Service learning is an active experience at NFA where students gain a deep understanding of service through pre-education, faceto-face interaction, and post-reflection. Integrated with religious education, service learning connects back to the Gospel values, which results in a truly meaningful experience for students. Students are thoughtful and compassionate inside and outside of the classroom, a result of learning to love inclusively from the earliest of ages. With a deep respect for faith, students are not afraid to take risks. They put their faith into action by participating in service, promoting social justice, and being civically engaged. “Ms. Monterio’s leadership today is quintessential of the passion she brings to Mission and Formation at NFA!” noted Killeen. “Today marked a big hopeful next step reigniting our 20-plus-year legacy of service-learning at NFA and leveraging the two years of planning of the Identity & Relationship Committee implementing our Strategic Plan, Directed Toward Tomorrow.”

The Office of Mission & Formation hosted a Thanksgiving food drive for Visitation School in Kensington. Sixth grade students helped organize and pack the donations and parent volunteers helped deliver the food.

MLK Day of Service

Souper Bowl For NFA’s Souper Bowl, students placed canned good donations in the box of the team they thought would win the Super Bowl. All goods collected were donated to sponsored works of the Sisters of the Saint Joseph, including the Chestnut Hill College’s Food Pantry, which supports college-aged students and adult learners who may be experiencing food scarcity, and the Neighborhood Center in Camden, which strives to break the cycle of poverty by offering academic, athletic, and arts programs for children and teenagers.

Cookie Drop Off

NFA hosted its Martin Luther King Day of Service on Friday, January 14, 2022 on campus where all students, faculty, and staff participated in a number of different service projects, which benefited local organizations.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph Welcome Center dedicated a week in March to spreading The Sweetness of St. Joseph around Kensington. With that in mind, NFA students and staff took the time to bake cookies in The Loft, NFA’s new makerspace, and write letters for The Welcome Center’s neighbors. Once complete and ready to eat, sixth grade students, along with Ally Monteiro, Director of Mission & Formation, and Dr. Ryan Killeen, President, dropped cookies off at The Welcome Center. Students and staff were greeted by Sister Kathy McShane, Director, and Sister Pat Madden, Coordinator of Literacy and Technology. The Welcome Center shared these cookies with their “Dear Neighbors” in celebration of the 19-year anniversary of The Welcome Center.

“The overarching goal of the day was to reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and highlight shared principals between the Sisters of St. Joseph and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.— our interconnectedness and our call to love our neighbor without distinction,” said Ally Monteiro, Director of Mission and Formation. “Through the service projects, engagement with guest speakers, and lastly, in the space dedicated to personal reflection, students were able to actively participate in and contribute to these two legacies.” 14

NFA Rededicates & Restores The Centennial Chapel

$100,000 Endowed Scholarship NFA is pleased to announce the creation of the Rosaria Hosmer Endowed Scholarship in honor of beloved former teacher Rosaria “Roe” Hosmer, who taught at NFA for 29 years and served as a mentor to many. Doctors Sidney Croul and Erica Bergstrom, the parents of two NFA graduates—Everett ’01 and Adrianna ’06—established this generous $100,000 endowed scholarship to express their appreciation for: • The combination of academic and values-based education that NFA provides; and • Roe Hosmer’s legacy as a faculty member Doctors Croul and Bergstrom credit both their children’s personal and academic success to Mrs. Hosmer’s influence.

Tom Schwenger, Audrey Schwenger, Dr. Ryan Killeen, Richard K.A. Becker ’72, and Ann Marie Becker Gross pose for a photo following the rededication of The Centennial Chapel.

The NFA community rededicated The Centennial Chapel during a renewal mass on Sunday, December 5, 2021. The Centennial Chapel, which is located in the first floor of The Big House, was restored and updated during the winter of 2021. “We were so happy to gather together for a beautiful celebration as we enter our second century,” said Dr. Killeen, President of NFA. “While we wish that the whole school could have attended, space constraints required that we limit attendance. We were able to include representatives of all of our constituent groups including, faculty, students, current families, alumni, and of course the Sisters of St. Joseph.” As part of NFA’s renovations, the school removed old wall-to-wall carpeting and partition walls. Hardwood floors were restored to their original beauty, and a tray ceiling was installed and painted blue, emulating the ceiling of the SSJ Motherhouse Chapel at Mount St. Joseph Convent adjacent to Chestnut Hill College. All of the original stained-glass windows remain intact and give the chapel a heavenly glow when the sun shines. The renovated space is peaceful and prayerful. Annals from the beginning of The Mount Saint Joseph School for Boys (the original Norwood Academy) revealed that the chapel was dedicated on Sunday, November 28, 1920, and was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin under the title of Her Immaculate Conception. The chapel will retain Her patronage, and will be commonly known as The Centennial Chapel.

Rosaria “Roe” Hosmer and her family visited The Big House on campus in late December to receive the news about the new endowed scholarship in her name. Mrs. Hosmer and her husband, Greg, are the proud parents of two NFA graduates: Christina ’92 and Gregory ’95.

“Throughout her tenure as a member of the Norwood-Fontbonne Academy faculty, Roe embodied the values of Norwood-Fontbonne Academy,” wrote Doctors Sidney Croul and Erica Bergstrom. “Roe’s exceptional contribution was the breadth of her approach: She both taught the student and educated the child. Roe contributed her intelligence, empathy, creativity, and endless patience to her interactions with every child, striving to enable each to develop the caring, strength, and confidence that defines the truly successful adult.”

“Returning the space to its original use as a chapel is such a blessing for our community, honoring our legacy and providing a sacred space to gather,” said Killeen. “The Centennial Chapel allows a space for student grades to celebrate Liturgy, hold prayer services, and retreats. It provides a beautiful venue for expanded programing in Mission & Formation.”

Mrs. Hosmer, aka the “Maestro of Language Arts,” began at NFA as a Montessori assistant in JLC with Sister Jean Laurich in the 1984–85 school year. She went on to teach Junior Level Montessori students for two years before moving up to fourth grade where she taught language arts as a homeroom teacher for five years. Following her time in fourth grade, Mrs. Hosmer moved up to fifth grade to teach religion and integrated language arts.

A special thank you to our benefactors: Richard K.A. Becker ’72 & Ann Marie Becker Gross and the Schwenger Family (Audrey, Tom, Michael ’12, Abby ’14)

The Rosaria (Roe) Hosmer Endowed Scholarship reflects appreciation of Norwood-Fontbonne Academy and Mrs. Hosmer’s dedication to all of the children she taught at the school.

Little Mermaid a Smashing Success! Led by Director Taylor Stabler ’06, the Drama Connections Program did a wonderful job in its April 2022 production of The Little Mermaid. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew!

NFA Students Becoming Stewards of the Environment In conjunction with this production of The Little Mermaid, NFA students learned all about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean. Marine debris is litter that ends up in the ocean, seas, and other large bodies of water. While many different types of trash enter the ocean, plastics make up the majority of marine debris for two reasons. First, plastic’s durability, low cost, and malleability mean that it’s being used in more and more consumer and industrial products. Second, plastic goods do not biodegrade, but instead, break down into smaller pieces. For many people, the idea of a “garbage patch” conjures up images of an island of trash floating on the ocean. In reality, these patches are almost entirely made up of tiny bits of plastic, called microplastics. Laura Colussi’s (’04) art students in kindergarten through eighth grade used their knowledge of The Great Pacific Garbage Patch as inspiration for The Little Mermaid set design. The art rooms are home to many recyclable materials, including plastic containers, plastic caps, cardboard and paper towel rolls. Students used these materials to create the scenery on display.
